During dental examinations, dentists examine the tongue as it can reveal important health information about the body: a dry tongue may indicate bacterial or fungal infections, a smooth and shiny tongue may suggest vitamin or iron deficiencies, and bite marks on the tongue sides may indicate teeth grinding or clenching at night.

Most people don't know their tounge can reveal thisAñadido:
One of the first things we look at when we do an examination as a dentist is to look at your tongue because the tongue itself can tell us a lot about what's going on in the rest of your body. For example, if the tongue looks dry, there could be bacterial infections, it could be fungal infections. If the tongue is smooth and shiny, then it might be that there are some vitamin deficiencies like iron deficiencies that could be contributing to that. If you see bite marks on the sides of your tongue, then potentially you might be grinding or clenching your teeth at night. So, the tongue gives us a little window to what else might be going on in your body.
