[00:00:19]The aurora borealis, >> [music] >> the northern lights, is the most breathtaking natural light show on Earth.

[00:00:28]Here is what [music] is actually happening when you see the aurora.

[00:00:32]Charged particles from the sun, electrons and protons, are constantly streaming through the solar system in what's called the solar wind.

[00:00:41]>> [music] >> When these particles reach Earth, our planet's magnetic field deflects most of them.

[00:00:46]But near the poles, the field [music] lines converge and particles can enter the upper atmosphere.

[00:00:53]When they collide with oxygen and nitrogen molecules 60 to 200 miles above the Earth's surface, energy is released as light.

[00:01:02]Different molecules at different altitudes produce different [music] colors.

[00:01:06]Oxygen at high altitudes produces red.

[00:01:09]Oxygen lower down produces green, [music] the most common aurora color.

[00:01:14]Nitrogen produces blue and purple.

[00:01:28]The best places to see the northern lights are Norway, Iceland, Finland, >> [music] >> Sweden, Canada, and Alaska, all within the aurora zone.

[00:01:39]The southern [music] hemisphere has the aurora australis, the southern lights, visible from [music] Antarctica, southern Argentina, and parts of Australia and New Zealand.

[00:01:51]The lights are most active during periods of high solar activity.

[00:01:56]They can appear as shimmering curtains, rippling waves, or dancing flames across the sky.

[00:02:04]And no photograph, no matter how good, fully captures what it is like to stand beneath.

[00:02:13]Standing under the northern lights, I dare not feel that the universe is indifferent to something.
