Argentina Released 3 Jaguars Into a Capybara-Dominated Swamp — 4 Years Later, Nobody Expected This
Added:Time magazine called Ibera, Argentina's most successful large-scale ecological restoration project. But the person behind it wasn't a scientist or politician. He was an American fashion designer. Together with his wife, he helped bring a dying ecosystem back to life after nearly 70 years. So, how did one of South America's richest wetlands end up on the brink of collapse? And why did an American couple spend millions buying private land to restore it? To answer that, we have to go back to the beginning.
The story begins in Esteros del Ibera, a massive wetland in northeastern Argentina and the second largest wetland in South America. The name Ibera comes from the Guaraní language and roughly means "shining waters". And honestly, the place looks unreal. More than 4,000 species of plants and animals live here.
Over 350 bird species, around 60 reptile species, thousands of capybaras, caimans, marsh deer, giant anteaters, giant river otters. The wetlands are packed with life in almost every direction. And at the very top of this system was the jaguar. For centuries, jaguars helped keep the wetlands balanced. They controlled prey populations and shaped how animals moved through the environment. Everything here evolved together over thousands of years. But then, humans arrived. During the early and mid-1900s, jaguars were hunted heavily across the region. Ranchers saw them as threats to livestock. And over time, they completely disappeared from Corrientes province. For nearly 70 years, there were no jaguars left in Ibera. And once the top predator vanished, other animals started expanding fast, especially capybaras. Now, technically, capybaras always belonged here. The problem was that nothing was controlling their numbers anymore. Without jaguars hunting them, huge groups started spreading across the wetlands. In some parts of Ibera, researchers recorded densities reaching around 129 capybaras per square mile, and the damage added up fast. Capybaras spend most of their time grazing, and one adult can eat up to 8 lb of vegetation every [clears throat] day. Over time, entire areas of the wetlands started getting stripped down faster than they could recover. The ecosystem slowly began losing balance, and it wasn't just capybaras. Decades of hunting, cattle expansion, land burning, and habitat destruction kept pushing the wetlands closer to collapse. For a long time, it looked like nobody could stop it. Then, unexpectedly, help came from a billionaire businessman from the United States.
Doug Tompkins wasn't a scientist or a politician. He was a billionaire fashion designer who made his fortune building global fashion brands. Doug was the co-founder of The North Face and later Esprit, two massively successful outdoor fashion companies. By the late 1980s, after making millions in business, Tompkins became convinced that modern consumer culture was helping destroy the natural world. So, he walked away from it. Together with his wife, Kristine Tompkins, the former CEO of Patagonia, he started investing millions of dollars into conservation projects across South America, and not everyone trusted them.
Some locals believed the couple had hidden motives. People asked questions like, "Why are Americans buying huge amounts of land in Patagonia? Do they want control of the water? Are they trying to build some kind of private territory?" At one point, parts of the media even described the project as an American private kingdom. But despite the criticism, the land purchases continued. Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, Doug and Kristine bought massive areas of degraded forests and former cattle ranches across Chile and Argentina. Large sections of that land were restored and later donated for conservation. And Iberá became one of their most ambitious projects.
Eventually, these efforts helped create Iberá National Park, protecting around 1.7 million acres of wetlands and grasslands. But restoring the land itself wasn't enough. Something important was still missing, the jaguar.
In 2010, conservationists officially launched what became known as the jaguar reintroduction project. But bringing back an apex predator isn't simple. You can't just open a cage and hope everything works out. Jaguars need huge territories. They need hunting skills.
And most importantly, they need to avoid humans. So, in 2012, conservationists built a reintroduction center on San Alonso Island inside Iberá. The location was isolated, wild, and perfect for training jaguars to survive on their own again because after nearly 70 years, there was finally a chance to bring them back.
The first jaguars arrived in Iberá in 2015.
Some came from Brazil, others from Paraguay, rescue centers and conservation programs across South America. Argentina's remaining wild jaguar population had become dangerously small, so maintaining genetic diversity was critical, but moving jaguars was only the beginning. The real challenge was rebuilding their wild instincts.
Human interaction was kept to an absolute minimum. The jaguars were raised in large semi-wild enclosures where they had to hunt for themselves. Capybaras, feral pigs, and other prey species became part of their training. Every jaguar was fitted with a GPS collar and monitored closely, and not all of them succeeded. If a jaguar became too comfortable around humans or struggled to hunt properly, it wasn't released into the wild because once predators lose their fear of people, conflict becomes almost unavoidable.
Then came a huge breakthrough. In 2018, the first jaguar cubs born in Corrientes in nearly 70 years arrived. One of them, a female named Arami, quickly became a symbol of the project. For conservationists, it was proof that the idea might actually work. Then in 2021, the first jaguars were officially released into the wild wetlands of Iberá. By 2022, several individuals were already roaming freely through the ecosystem, but not everyone was celebrating. Some local communities worried about livestock attacks, land access, and safety. After all, jaguars aren't just another tourist attraction.
They're one of the most powerful predators in the Americas, and bringing them back meant humans would once again have to share the landscape with them.
Almost immediately, the wetlands started changing. Camera traps and GPS data showed that capybaras, feral hogs, and other prey species quickly became major parts of the jaguar's diet. But the biggest impact wasn't simply about how many animals were being killed, it was about fear returning to the ecosystem.
For nearly 70 years, capybaras had moved freely across open areas without worrying about predators. Now that had changed. Researchers started noticing different behavior almost right away.
Capybaras spent less time grazing in exposed areas and began avoiding places where jaguars were active. And that shift affected the entire landscape. As grazing pressure decreased, grasses and wetland vegetation slowly began recovering. Over time, parts of the ecosystem became more stable again.
Birds gained better nesting cover.
Smaller species found more shelter.
Wetland vegetation became denser in some regions. For the first time in decades, Ibera finally seemed to be moving back toward balance. But then, another disaster hit.
In 2022, massive wildfires tore through Corrientes during one of the worst fire seasons in Argentina's recent history.
More than 2.5 million acres burned. Huge sections of Ibera were damaged by fire and drought, including restored habitats and wildlife corridors. It was a massive setback. Years of restoration suddenly looked fragile again. But surprisingly, the rewilding project survived. The jaguar population kept growing. Released animals continued reproducing in the wild, and new cubs were born without direct human intervention. By 2024, around 33 free-roaming jaguars had been recorded in the ecosystem, and by 2026, reports suggested the population had reached at least 50 individuals. For a species that had completely disappeared from the region, it was an incredible recovery. But the changes weren't only ecological, they were economic, too. For decades, much of the region depended heavily on cattle ranching, hunting, and resource extraction. Now, tourism was starting to replace part of that economy. As jaguars and other iconic species returned, visitors followed. New jobs appeared in wildlife guiding, eco-tourism, conservation work, park management, and scientific monitoring.
In some cases, former hunters even became wildlife guides. Slowly, Iberá started becoming known around the world as one of the most successful rewilding projects in South America. And at the center of that story was the jaguar. Not just as a predator, but as a symbol that damaged ecosystems might still recover if humans are willing to give them the chance. And now, the big question is this: If Iberá could recover after nearly collapsing, could other ecosystems do the same?
