Baltimore Key Bridge Collapse: Singapore ship operator, employee charged in deadly crashAdded:
The DOJ, meanwhile, announcing criminal charges today in connection with the deadly collapse of Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge.
>> Federal prosecutors accusing the operators of the cargo ship Dali of ignoring serious safety problems after the crash that killed six construction workers last year. Our Shin Ra in studio tonight with those new details. Sharen.
>> Yeah, guys, two major developments today. On one hand, Maryland reached a massive $2.25 billion settlement with the owner and operator of the dolly, the cargo ship that brought down the key bridge. And now the Justice Department filing criminal charges accusing the operator of the Dolly ship of misleading the NTSB and FBI. Federal prosecutors saying the ship's operators knew about serious safety problems on board the Dolly and allegedly cut corners and trying to cover it up.
>> The indictment shows that Synergy and Rad Christian Nyer repeatedly failed to document, investigate, and report significant safety risks and hazards aboard the dolly. They forged safety inspections and certifications. They falsely claimed the ship was in good working order and then lied to investigators about their actions when they were questioned.
>> The Justice Department unsealing criminal charges against two shipping companies linked to the Dolly along with a technical superintendent for the ship.
Prosecutors say the vessel was operating with an improper fuel pump system that could not automatically restart after a power failure. And they say that failure contributed to the blackouts that left the ship drifting toward the Key Bridge before it collapsed into the Pasco River in March of 2024. Six construction workers were killed. It forced the closure of the port of Baltimore, causing billions of dollars in damage.
Federal investigators also accusing the company officials of falsifying safety records, misleading the Coast Guard, hiding known problems with the ship. The DJ DOJ calling it a preventable tragedy.
As alleged in the indictment, N and others took steps to hide the use of the flushing pump on the dolly both before and after the crash.
>> This indictment should send a message to all ship operators that circumventing safety requirements and breaking US laws will not be tolerated.
>> And the legal battle is not over. The state still plans to sue the ship builder Hyundai, which investigators say is also at fault for this deadly disaster. Jeff.
>> So to come, another one of the president's controversial construction projects takes a key step forward.
>> Plus, emotional testimony and detailed accounts as Epstein survivors return to Palm Beach facing lawmakers.
>> And the search for the source of that deadly cruise ship outbreak now stretching across continents as health officials warn it could take weeks to know the full scale.
Heat. Heat.
