Steve elegantly bridges the gap between rigorous atmospheric science and domestic life, making complex meteorological data feel both accessible and intimate. It is a refreshing example of how high-level expertise can be humanized without losing its technical integrity.

Record Cold & May Snow Lifting Out Eastern USA ~ Bomb Cyclone For Nova Scotia ~ Fun Sky & Pets VideoAjouté :
Good morning, Steve. T-Rex, we've made it to another not in a hurry Sunday, so we're just going to take it nice and slow, right, T-Rex? Um, maybe not.
Out the door with enthusiasm regardless of what the weather is doing.
And right now, it's colding. It's colding out and [music] in. at 9:14 a.m.
Sunday, May 3rd. 58 indoors, 45 [music] outdoors. I don't keep the house at 58.
It's warmer upstairs. We've got the thermostat set, but not in the basement.
And that's what we do every morning. We go out the basement door. Well, at least when we're in town here, we we move around a lot. I know Scott says, "Why don't you bring the pets with you when you go to Cape Cod in Vermont?" Well, sometimes T-Rex comes, but Steve, no, we're not traveling with Steve. And there's a uh verification on the mid-40s, and we have what's called a a backlash event right now. There's a very powerful storm at sea just far enough away that most of New England missed it.
But, uh, those of us that wanted the rain, yesterday we were planting grass seed in South Dennis, and we got the rain. It rained pretty hard last night.
Here is the 24-hour rainfall tally and the most for southern New England right there in South Dennis where we were 24 hours ago at 888 in the Tempest at my house said one inch exactly. So, uh almost an inch of rain on Cape Cod and in Northern New England it was mostly a miss. But here's the rainfall for northern New England since last Wednesday. We've been talking about that was going to be a fairly wet period and I would say uh it was disappointing for many. We did pick up more than an inch in spots in Whiting, Maine and southeastern Maine uh with close to 3 in for the wind and we got wind right here.
Oh yeah, we got ravens or crows up there. So, not in a hurry Sunday I call it because if I can I try and make no plan on a Sunday and make it last as long as I can and do whatever I want for the day which is usually involving a lot of editing. And I know in the my videos here I use a lot of different words like advection.
Uh cold air advection means that colder air is blowing in. advection the movement of the air and sometimes it's up in the sky and sometime sometimes it's down near the ground and sometimes it's both and today it's both cold air advection and I use the word millibars that is a measurement of atmospheric pressure and what is wind is air moving from high to low pressure so sometimes it's a high barometer wind and sometimes it's a low barometer wind and often it's a mix of the two and I use words like thickness and the 540 thickness is cold enough for snow and it's been here for three days and it is snowing again or still on Mount Washington. We picked up another 2.8 ines of snow in the last 24 hours getting us to about four inches since last week when this cold air adction commenced.
And uh the wind is gusting right now. It's it's less windy on Mount Washington.
What was it about 29 miles per hour and uh it's more gusty down here near the ocean because of the ocean storm? And oh, we got some ravens trying to talk to us up there. Crows. Are they ravens or crows? So, it's mating season for the crows.
And they they make their babies right when the leaves fill in on the trees like this. So, the first week of May, uh, the crows have their babies and, you know, we're really heavy into nature and the osprey and the eagles. We've had so much action around here. Uh, once again with this cold air adction, just about every morning we've had record low temperatures in the lower 48, United States and Canada. Last week it was more in Canada or 10 days ago and now this week it's been more last 5 days in the United States. And here's the record low temperature map for this morning. cold air advction all the way to Florida where it rained in Florida yesterday with thunderstorms and Milton, Florida at 44 degrees this morning. Not only a record for the day, but a record for the month of May. So, two mornings in a row we've set some alltime all time in our life. Record low temperatures for the entire month and the rest of them are daily record low temperatures. [snorts] Hot Springs, Virginia. 29 degrees this morning. Not so hot. Record low. Little ice in the bird bath in West Virginia.
And the surface map kind of reflects all that I'm talking about here. Uh when you have the clear sky and the light wind at night and the cold air mass is radiational cooling and underneath that center of that high which is across the southeastern United States, it's an old cold high I talk about uh with about a central pressure of 1024 millibars. And then the developing rapidly intensifying bomb cyclone. Yes, more on that in a few minutes. southeast of Nantuckets. It's down to about 992 millibars. And the old storms from last week are way up in Canada. So, we have sort of this hybrid wind flow from the northwest, which is so gusty here in southeastern New England where the sun was out for a time this morning. I forgot to mention that front in South Florida. Yeah. Uh South Florida's getting some heavy rain. Uh also needing the rain there. There are fires burning. Uh so, here's the national radar. We'll start off there in the southeastern United States with that rain. Uh that's the southern end of the front. that's offshore and that rain clipping uh South Florida and Miami is having some weather this morning. And then the the storm that's east of New England still has the backside of the rain and some snow in the higher elevations. Mount Kataden is probably snowing along with Mount Washington this morning. Back into that rain is just east of Cape Cod now and there are few more showers across Wisconsin and Minnesota where it was record cold but that's a warm front now. So, uh, after these cold highs go by in the backside, you warm it up and we're going to get warm air at Vection, uh, starting tomorrow and Tuesday before new cold air comes back at us. And a simplified general forecast for New England is right here at weather. us. It's a free weather site and we're going to use Nasha, New Hampshire because it's right in the center of New England uh, demographically and almost geographically too, but Maine is so big.
And today it's in the 40s and 50s with a lot of clouds. Uh where it was sunny this morning, it's going to turn more cloudy. And where it was cloudy, you might get some more sunshine. But anyhow, NSHA, you see the wind sock there down at the base. So that means it's going to be windy from the west and southwest tomorrow. And Tuesday we go from the 60s to the 70s, then back down to the 60s again. And then the raindrops show up on Wednesday and Thursday.
And that's going to be a a warm front/cold front. And then we're going to have a storm on Thursday into Friday and then it's going to turn colder again. So the climatological average high temperatures this time of year well into the 60s. And you see we're going the opposite direction again next weekend. And uh it looks like next weekend could end up mostly dry in New England. We'll be monitoring that of course. And so what else did I want to talk about?
We'll do the sports after the weather.
Exciting sporting several days.
Yeah, unless you're a Boston Bruins and Celtics fan. All right. Uh, so this bomb cyclone, I I should have noticed it before how rapidly it's deepening. Uh, the deeper the center of the low pressure, the more wind there generally is, especially if you have a high around. So, we're going to go to the GFS, which has some changes, but somewhat consistent with yesterday anyway. Uh, in the big picture, I guess it did okay. I'd give it about a C on how it worked out uh the last 5 days from what were uh 10 days ago. So we try to take it out to 10 days, but you know that the weather forecast is always going to be changing. And here we go.
The low pressure system going off the map deepening. Uh yesterday it was a 105 mibar low pressure system at 5:00 p.m.
And this afternoon it's going to be a a 977 mibar low pressure system. So that's a deepening of 28 mibars in 24 hours.
And that is called bombbo genesis. And the last bomb cyclone we saw was the blizzard we had back there the third week in February. This is not a blizzard, but there may be some snow in Nova Scotia. And that low is going to stall out and start to retrograde. We talk about retrograding when those lows instead of crossing the Atlantic, they move back into Canada and move westward.
And we've had that happen several times last couple days. It's going to happen again. But there's also a new low coming at us uh that's going to be north of us.
So that north of us low is going to induce a wind from the west southwest.
And 558 thickness, there's a rule you can take the 58 and add 20. If you get sunshine and west wind, you can go 58 + 20 equals 78° in spots on Tuesday before the front settles in from southeastern Canada. And there's some what looks like general steady light rain without thunder here on Wednesday. That will push the front south of us. We'll be turning colder again. Cold air adection Wednesday night. And now here comes cyclogenesis.
A new low pressure forming on the front that stalled and there will be showers and thunderstorms and severe weather over the Mid-Atlantic states here Wednesday night and then Thursday. Where does the center of that low go? It looks like it tries to go right south of Nantucket. So that'll keep us mostly on the cold side with rain instead of thunder and perhaps some elevation snow.
And that low is also deepening rapidly down through 990 millibars and it's sub90 as it gets to the coast of Maine on Thursday night and Friday morning.
And there's some rain and snow in the mountains and we're going to get cold air at vection again next Friday night and Saturday May 9th. There's just a weak little pertabbation on the front with some showers. Could be some ice mixed in some of those showers. We'll have to watch that as May 9th is a day of record for uh the latest snow uh on record for southern timeout.
When an Osprey goes over your head, you say timeout because it seems like the Osprey chase TK weather chases me. Thank you, Osprey.
And Crow pointing toward the northwest on my flag pole, meaning air is coming from the northwest. Oh, yeah. So, pick it up again next Sunday, May 10th. And now the front is south of us. We're on the colder side of the front. Nothing extreme. If the sun is out, you can still be 60°. Uh but if it's cloudy and range, you'll be in the 50s. And it looks like the low that we were uh talking about yesterday with another possible heavy rain event for southern New England on Monday, May 11th. Now, this is going to be something we're going to be watching every single day.
We're going to stop it here at 11 a.m.
on Monday the 11th. And uh there's a th00and millibar low east of Atlantic City. And the rain is missing New England to the south. A heavy blob of rain, too. And it's almost cold enough for snow, but not quite. And uh I know I I don't really want more snow, but I just love um the action. And it is snowing in Colorado at that point a little bit. And uh this is going to be something that's going to be going moving north or moving south or just like about uh three things to watch over the next 12 days. So that's the end of the weather part. Well, how cute is this? What are we doing? We're grazing.
Rex, what is Steve having for breakfast?
He's sitting on the rose plant that we cut down. It's growing underneath him right there. And we did get some rain on our uh lettuce is planted there. Peas are planted there. I think we'll go to sports here in a moment. How much rain have I gotten since I was here on Friday. 0.1. That's not going to do it.
And I'm going to have to rough it with the garden hose again here. Is that lettuce? No, I don't see the lettuce seed coming up. There's a slight chance that that's lettuce right there. Yeah, that's lettuce. That's my lettuce seeds are starting to come up. So, and more.
Let's go to the sports first before we get to the end more. Uh, yesterday, uh, just like the day before, I'll remember where I was when the Celtics season ended, when the Bruins season ended. We were watching live music at a party in Dennisport. And then last night, we were watching live music at a Kentucky Derby party in Cohasset, Massachusetts. And Blue Canyon was ripping it up, and so were the 76ers. Celtics tried to make it close with a minute or two left but then just failed. So congratulations Philly weather guy on taking game seven and keeping your season [music] going.
Meanwhile, all of the sudden we have no hockey and no basketball here in the Boston area. The Red Sox, they're just not doing it for us either yet.
Hopefully something changes in that department. And so uh the hockey and basketball will still be going in June and we'll be like, did anyone win the Stanley Cup yet? Who's who's still left?
Because once your team is out, you stop paying attention. Looking over there toward Boston. I see some Virgo. So, some sprinkles. No, I didn't use the short-range guidance on the precipitation. The precipitation, if it happens today, is mostly light. Except for in Maine. In Maine, it kind of keeps on raining and it's cold. But, uh, that's really interesting to have a bomb cyclone go by. I think that's about what, maybe the the 14th one we've had since, uh, last fall that has been in our corner of the world. And it's the first one since the blizzard. Oh, yes.
And, uh, the sports. Okay. And good news yesterday, what a story. The first ever uh woman trainer for a horse in the Kentucky Derby. And that horse came from dead last golden tempo. Came all the way on the last corner and won the race. And I had placed a friendly wager on that horse. And the same uh with [music] Rose. Nice to meet you, Rose. We shared the winnings yesterday on this uh high [music] odds, high stakes uh bet we made. and you mostly just say a golden tempo that sounds good without doing any research. So, we had a great time and Blue Canyon will close us out with some music and more yesterday from the backyard in South Dennis [music] with Kevin. Always hard working fixing up the damage that the plows left uh with the last bomb cyclone and the blizzard and then going uh up here monitoring the sky. Really interesting sky and having a fun time last night. Yesterday's weather today on this not in a hurry Sunday is called and More >> and More. Pushing noon time. Still dry on Cape Cod. The wind's still kind of from the southwest. Blob number one to the north still in charge. Blob number two to the south coming our way.
Probably have a ring around the sun here before too long. And today's project is called Let's Go. Let's go. Put some grass seed in. repair uh the side of the road where the plows got the the lawns and there was just a little garter snake right in there. There's a snake in there somewhere. That's where we keep our snakes.
Hello. Hello. Where are you?
So, most of the big branches have been picked up and processed and now you get to the edges and it's quite an edge.
That plow did a good job edging this.
What's that about 3 or 4 in?
Except for we liked it over to here before. Oh well. Give us something to do on a weekend. Otherwise, we'd be so bored.
>> Yeah, >> exactly.
>> Brisk breeze from the southwest off the cold ocean. And that means that the northern system is more in control than the southern system, but you can't stop spring. I love the flocks.
Come on, babies. Droop on down. I didn't get to cleaning out that hydrangeanger.
And the crew around the corner doing a great job.
Rebuilding the plow damage from the winter.
Got all kinds of helpers.
Time to hit the road. Going to see Joe Joyce.
>> 61° 2:00 in Plymouth. And it looks like we have the beginning of perhaps a deformation band of precipitation. Much darker on the northern horizon, but that is ice coming out of the cloud right there.
and right there.
So, we've got the merger of the northern blob and the southern blob happening.
That's pretty gray off to the west.
Also, the fact that it's 60° and so cold up in the sky. What's that called? Instability.
Differential adction. Cold air adection aloft. Warm air adection near the surface.
More and more and more getting more interesting by the second. Look at that black bottom cloud. That's an updraft.
Then behind it, it's the precipitation.
So, we should be getting windshield wipers here before too long. Up to 62 degrees now going over the North River.
It's called the River, Tim. The North River. You can tell I'm excited when my accent comes out. And here is the Norwell traffic wave right on schedule every weekend at this hour. Entering Norwell.
It was just a minor fender banda, so I stuck it out. Traffic's not so bad.
First raindrops. 2:30 p.m. Rockland.
60°. So warm, so unstable, so interesting. Did I mention we're going to see Joe Joyce play music today? Going to cut around Accord Pond. Nice, pleasant drive down to 58°. We're in Weimoth now. And believe it or not, underneath this intersection is the back river. And thousands of herring are [music] running underneath there, underneath there, up into there. This is the Weimoth Herring Run [music] up to Whitman's Pond. The most populous herring run in New England [music] historically.
Next stop, the Boore River. Bore River.
And we're back in Weimoth. The sun is out and we've got fat raindrops. We've got convection and we've got tulips choosing not to open. Looks like some of them are going by already. Darn.
These ones got some kind of blight or something going on. I think I hear Rex in there. Let's go find Rex. Well, Tim, plenty of good waves today out here.
Over here at Longand Beach, enjoying some surf. T-Rex here. Enjoying the the ocean, too.
But yeah, picked up a new fun shape, mid-length, whatever you want to call it. Little 76 to catch these slow waves, but it's nice.
Look at that. Oh, yeah.
Still going. Still going.
Oh, a little shaky there.
I just looked at the guidance. Sure enough, Bombo Genesis. Haven't had a bomb cyclone in so long. It kind of slipped my mind. I'm sure I covered that already. Real fun looking at at the water. And Steve is probably waiting at this door, right? Steve, you want to come out real quick? On to the next thing. Yep. Come on. Oh, the door's locked. Sir, here we go. You jump up and down three times.
What were you doing, Rex? I saw you rolling around over there. Rolling around in the worms.
All right.
So yeah, deformation.
Is that thunder?
Uh, it's a jet plane.
Thunder is not out of the question.
Probably just offshore.
Defformation bands.
We've got cyclloenesis.
And we've got a Kentucky Derby party with music on the harbor over there. We're on the road.
And there's precipitation over there. I don't think we're going to see the moonrise tonight like we did last night.
I think we're going to see raindrops and maybe some hail or something like that from these tall black bottom clouds.
Got the VGA up there in the upper left.
So, we're bringing an umbrella in watching the harbor. Moon's going to come up over there after the running for the roses.
And how about some Blue Canyon? ins [music] [music] [music] the shutters from the shade.
>> [music] >> around the other days [singing] in a derby party. Hi Leah.
>> Very handsome people.
Watching the weather harbor utility line of a 99year-old veteran.
Oh, I already put mine in.
>> There's a hat contest.
>> Still dry, kind of dark. A intermittent rain just about. We were here last year and it was uh raining and about 41 degrees. Much better today. Beautiful.
Staples going down.
[music] >> Is that an original song there, Joe?
>> Original song Top of My Head written by Peter Richardson. I was a good friend of mine. It was the last song.
>> Real House Rodeo.
>> Wheel House Rodeo.
>> The last song he ever wrote. He was uh kind of stricken with ALS. I was wrote this love letter to his wife called Top of My Head and we s we sing a song for him and it's always nice to do.
>> That's beautiful. We loved it. Thank you.
>> Thank you, Peter.
>> [music] >> from the bottom of my heart.
>> It's time we went [music and singing] down to B.
From a shining [singing and music] brass bed, we made a new star.
[music] Sunset at the Legion in Cohasset. Can hear Joe Joyce Blue Canyon. [music] A lot of fun. I split the pot. I won. It's just random.
I just picked a 19 cuz no one else was picking 19.
Golden Tempo. First ever woman trainer to win the [music] derby. And Rose and I split the pot.
$5 bet. We each got 150 cuz everyone bet on all the other horses.
Either way, great time. And once again, the weather worked out much better than they I said today.
So, let's run some [music] time lapse.
Definitely an interesting sky.
>> Cape Cod, I think, a little less interesting.
>> We had a a fairly nice day. We're playing grass there and everything. more blue than gray.
>> Sky fililled air from the southwest. So the northern stream energy was in charge and then Weimoth day started with that northern blob right on our doorstep just north of Boston.
>> Did anyone get any grapple?
Steve and Shrewbury bands of precipitation with the dark clouds coming and going individual showers moving to the north.
Upper level winds from the west southwest.
Differential invection love to say.
And we'll leave it I think with the music of Blue Canyon.
for our not in a hurry Sunday. [music] >> Kind of dual tunes going >> upshore psychoenesis. [music] There's Cohassent Harbor.
Moon comes up a little bit later each day, next several days.
The weather is not boring. It's always interesting.
>> Appreciate your viewership. Thanks for watching.
>> Talk to you on our back to work Monday.
