A cold front is expected to bring widespread showers and thunderstorms to north Alabama starting mid-week, with rain chances increasing from Monday-Tuesday (low) to Wednesday-Friday (higher), and temperatures moderating from the 80s to upper 70s-low 80s; this rainfall may help alleviate the current drought, with 2-3 inches expected by the first half of next weekend.

Rain chances return to north Alabama for the week aheadAdded:
Everyone at WAVY 10, Storm Tracker, Chief Meteorologist Jeff Castle. Hope you enjoyed the weekend. Today ended up being the hottest day of the year so far. A lot of us saw 90 for the first time here in 2026. We're going to be close again on Monday before some changes do arrive around the middle of next week. We're still expecting our next cold front to begin pushing into the area and it's not necessarily going to come and go and completely clear things out. So, showers and thunderstorms will return on kind of a widespread scale and then they're likely to hang with us on a daily basis for the remainder of next week and likely into that Memorial Day holiday weekend. We will pick up some summer downpours out of this, but right now does not necessarily look like we're going to be set up for severe weather threats. We'll keep an eye on that for you and let you know if it changes. Here's a breakdown of those rain chances for the week ahead. Monday, Tuesday they stay fairly low, but won't rule out something isolated. Wednesday, Thursday, Friday though starting to pick up the pace on the wet weather. Do expect to see scattered showers and thunderstorms somewhere in the area every day starting then and likely continuing again into that holiday weekend. Here's that rainfall forecast. Next 7 days this will take us through next Saturday and the numbers are good here. You know, we've made some progress denting the drought in the last few weeks. I know we've had a bit of a dry stretch here over the last week or so, but we are going to pick the rain back up maybe to the tune of 2 to 3 inches between now and the first half of next weekend and again that would go a long way to continue and alleviate the ongoing drought situation for us. So, we take into your Monday though rain will be a little tough to find, but not out of the question.
Overnight tonight we do expect just partly cloudy skies. Temperatures will fall back into the mid-60s. Through the day tomorrow we're going to heat up pretty quickly again. Mix of clouds and sun already into the mid-80s around the lunch hour and we'll be flirting with 90° again tomorrow afternoon. Most of the afternoon spent in the upper 80s, but we may briefly touch that 90° mark.
We once again see some showers close to the Georgia border. We might sneak one or two of those into Jackson, DeKalb County, but right now not expecting anything more significant than that for your Monday. Similar situation on Tuesday, just a 10% chance for any rainfall. Highs will be in the upper 80s. We pick up the rain chances, and we dial back the temperatures for the second half of the week. Upper 70s, low 80s for your highs. Morning lows will be high end of the 60s. And again, we will pick up a daily chance for showers and thunderstorms. And right now we do expect that'll likely continue through the holiday weekend, probably beyond as well, as at least for now, doesn't look like we're going to get a chance to completely dry things out. So, hopefully you know where the rain gear is. It's something that you'll likely get some frequent use out of starting around the middle of next week.
