Beechey’s methodical approach replaces mechanical guesswork with professional rigor, turning a complex rebuild into a masterclass of technical discipline. It is a rare demonstration of precision that leaves no room for the "good enough" mentality of amateur wrenching.

BIKE IN A BOX | EPISODE 2 | SURE YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING?Added:
Wow. What do we got here?
>> You tell me. Are you on the phone to anyone?
>> I am. Hey, hold on. Street's just put a box of goodies in front of me and he has a camera who's doing weird stuff.
>> What's in the box?
>> Wo! Engine parts. Genuine stuff we needed. Cool. Now we just got to find someone that's going to be able to fit all this stuff. Maybe we better get Ollie on the job. Hey Suzie, we got more parts that we bought for bike in a box.
That's That's what you put on your bike.
What are you taking off your bike?
>> Let's give her a bell tool bag and send her to the workshop.
>> All right. So, where are we up to now, mate?
>> As you've seen yesterday, we got a bunch of Yamaha parts. So, there was some gears and bits and pieces we needed that we couldn't get in Australia. Um, we didn't have time to wait. So, lucky I've gone on to a shop in the US that I've dealt with before and they were able to sort this all out. So, we've got a whole bunch of new gears, the selector, bunch of circlipips. So, what I'm going to do today is I'm going to lay it all out, make sure we've got everything we need.
We're not missing anything cuz that is the most important part. That's the new clutch hub. We've got our cylinder back from Ciro here. So, they've done that, set it all up for a new piston, replace the power valve, cleaned everything out, which was really important. Then over here, we have our Vertex complete engine rebuild kit. So, gaskets, crank, bearings, piston, everything, all the oil seals. So, I'm going to lay all this out and make sure we've got everything we need and then yeah, we want to start putting it together. So, the plan is to come in here Monday, start bolting the motor together, get it together that day, and then we can get moving forward.
So, Ollie's done the rest of the bike.
He has fitted so much stuff up. He's done the wheels, done the bars.
>> Rip this out, clean it up, slide it in, beauty.
>> You know, he's done a whole lot of stuff there. So, now we just need to get into the engine so we can put in the bike.
We've got all the gearbox parts here.
So, I need to lay them all out. Make sure we've got everything. I've got the cases here. So, what I've actually decided to do first is I'm going to put the bearings in the cases. So, I just want to get that done. Get all the bearings in the cases just to make sure we've got all those. You know, they should all be in the kit, but I just want to do it to double check. So, we're going to start putting some heat into it, dropping the bearings in the cases.
Just taking our time. It's been quite a while since I've done, you know, a full engine rebuild like this, especially because we received it in the box like this. Parts everywhere. You know, we pulled all the bearings out, got them blasted. So, it's going to be a bit of a slow process, but looking forward to it.
Went and bought a new heat gun. So, I've got the Makita heat gun here. Some people like to use a blow torch, like a gas torch. Um, I like to use a heat gun.
I find it easy and it works. Gets plenty of heat in there. So, you know, we'll start slowly heating it up. We'll do one bearing at a time, let it cool down, do the next one. So, but why? Explain that to me. Cuz what are you heating them up for?
>> So, the reason you heat it up is to expand. So, as you put heat into the case, it'll expand. Then the bearing will drop in there nice and easily.
That's the plan anyway. And then as it cools down, obviously the case retracts, holds the bearing nice and tight. So, you know, people have been doing it that way for years. Seems to work. It was always the way I got taught to do it.
So, some people put bearings in the freezer to make them a bit smaller. I've never personally done that. I think this works great. So, yeah, we'll put a bit of heat into it and start dropping some bearings in.
>> Oh, the other thing that No, like we got these vapor blasted.
>> Make sure you go and wash these.
Otherwise, all the media gets stuck in here and Yeah. more drums.
>> Yeah. As soon as we had them blasted, we washed them all out, made sure they were sweet. So, so this is a transmission bearing kit. So there should be every bearing we need in here for the [ __ ] So who doesn't like a good [ __ ] I guess? So like even with the bearings you can see some of them have a seal on one side. So you got to work out which way that goes. Obviously it's to keep the oil in the motor is my opinion. It goes that way. You can see. So some of the bearings do have like a little keeper and a holder that goes in here when we put the bolts in here. Put a bit of fresh Loctite in.
I thought you said it just dropped in there. Sometimes they do just drop in there if you get them real hot.
Sometimes I need a little bit of love.
>> All right, so Bey has a task ahead of him. Assembling this YZ125 engine from the ground up without having disassembled it himself. So, he's got to be pretty confident he knows what he's doing and where he's jamming stuff back in or this could end up being a more expensive build.
>> All right, man. What? Monday morning.
Monday morning. We're starting fresh, ready to go. We're going to finish putting all the bearings in the cases and just >> What have you got here, mate? Mate, this is my little homemade engine stand. So, I realized the other day that I was struggling to get the bearings in and have something to sit them on. As I said, it's been many years since I've really done much of this stuff, you know, and I remember when I was an apprentice, one of the mechanics made up a little stand like this that we used to use all the time. So, yeah, bought in a bit of 2x4, bolted it together. Just going to start assembling the bearings, putting the motor together. Just going to take my time, you know, don't want to miss anything. and just be real careful in every little step along the way and get it happening. So, off we go. We'll just start getting a bit of work done.
>> I really like what you've done here, mate. It's it's it's going to make my life easier. I grabbed a few aluminium blocks from home this morning. They're always good for tapping bearings in and little things. I should have been a bit more organized last week with those, but as I said, it's been a long time since I've done much of this stuff. A bit different to what I had to do with the KDM. You know, you pick up these little things and you remember stuff along the way. Used to be a mechanic.
Check this thing out. Well used.
>> Yeah. Done plenty of time this summer.
>> We're meant to be fixing it, not um wrecking it.
>> Oh, are we?
Oh, mate. Look at that.
Perfect. While we're here, we'll do the main bearings as well.
>> So, where do the main bearings go?
>> The main bearings go in the case where the crank sits. So either side of the crank, you've got a main bearing which spins. Ideally, they should spin. If they're not spinning, then you've got a problem. So that's that thing.
>> Yeah, that's the old crank.
>> How's the angle? You're not making it look fat, are you?
>> No, but there is one question I've got.
What the hell is that? What happened over the weekend? That wasn't there on Friday. Midlife crisis.
>> Considered midlife crisis when you're like seven. Oh yeah. Trying to keep up with the cookies, I guess. Not working.
>> How did this come about? just happened.
All right. The daughter thought it was a good idea. She's eight, so you know, I take all my advice from my 8-year-old.
>> It's probably the best kind of advice you've ever had. Be honest with you. I think it is sort of like my life meant for my other daughter, you know, she's 17. She said it was pretty cool.
>> I don't know if she was actually serious or not.
>> Main bearing.
>> Main bearing. Big dog.
>> Oh, look at that. She beautiful.
>> Slipped straight in.
>> Yep.
Doesn't need a tap. Just giving it a little tap for the sake of it. So, and then you let the cases cool down naturally, which will hold all the bearings. So, I'll move this one to the side. Just going to put that over there in the cooling department. Bring this one in. Get it set up. Keep an eye out actually on the MX store website. You'll see these engine stands on there pretty soon. So, still working out the costings for them and stuff.
>> These are going to come pretty split.
>> Oh, yeah. Yeah. No, you want that um the real nostalgic feel about it.
>> So, now you got the bearings in. They're all set.
>> Bearings are in case pulled down. You've got the retainers. So there's a few of the bearings have retainers like this on them. You can see this here. It's got a little like it's counter sunk a little bit in there and in the case. So you know you can see that there's a counter sunk bolt. So that sits in there. So I'm just going to put a little bit of Loctite on them and then we'll nip them up. Bit of a slow process. Torx bit these ones. So >> So what you're saying is it just takes a bit of time.
>> It does. It takes time, you know, and there's guys that do this stuff all the time and they would whip through bolting this together where you know, as I've said, I really plan on taking my time.
It's been a while since I've done much of this sort of stuff.
>> And do you have to talk all these or what?
>> A lot of them. Yes. Like certain bolts on the engine you do to talk. A lot of this stuff I don't. And I'm sure people go, "Oh, you need to talk that." Hey, that's cool. You talk it. Do what you want. There is stuff on the engine. I will talk some of this stuff. I'm doing it by feel. I feel like I've done enough of them that I can do that.
>> And what do they actually do? They're just holding the bearing in.
>> You're holding the bearing. You got to think like the transmission. So, these are bearings either side of the end of the trans. Oh, lunch truck. Lunch truck.
Tools down. Where's your credit card?
>> I don't apply for that today. You got to get some work done.
>> Normally, you're only just getting in just before that.
>> You know what? You make a valid point.
>> So, you've got dowels. So, a lot of the cases have dowels between them. So, this is the front one goes in there. And I know that when we put the other case on, I'll show you. There's actually a seal that goes between them. There will be a seal that goes Yeah, there you can see it's got a cutout for a seal. So, that will go over that dow. We'll put a seal on it. So, we'll get to that point a little bit later on. Hopefully not too far away. But so I can see here there's another dow here. I'm just going to sit these in there now. So they're in there.
There's another one there. Oh, they're a different size. So this one here probably goes on the outside on the clutch cover side. So So this one I got those two retainers in. There's no retainers for these ones. So we'll grab the other case and we'll do the same thing.
>> What have we got going on here? Do you know what all those are? So we do need to replace a few of the gears cuz they're worn. I think we got four or five that we need to replace. So, you got to be real careful. You got to take the gears off one at a time, not get them mixed up, work out which ones we need to replace. I haven't done anything like this for years. And I'm not going to lie, it makes me a bit nervous, and I'm a little bit stressed about it. You know, I want everything to go back together perfect. I got all new circlipips for the gears for the shafts.
So, that's good. So, I'm going to grab my new gears, work out which ones they are, and I'll just do one at a time, being real careful and taking my time to get them on there. So, hopefully we work out that, you know, we still have gears once we put it back together. I don't know. How many speed are these? Three or something? Yeah. Three and a half. This is just like Macano set instructions.
You'll be right.
>> Oh, just just look at it and it just it'll work.
>> Can I have a couple of sheets of paper towel, please, Joe?
Knocked off these side cutters, too.
>> Yeah, that'll be perfect. Thanks.
First, I got to work out which ones we are replacing. Auto from Japan. It's a gear. It's >> all from Japan. You buttthead.
>> You wouldn't know these days. Everything comes out of China.
>> No, not this Yamaha quality stuff, mate.
>> All right. Pretty rusty. Probably from China. That one.
>> You seem to be procrastinating a lot.
>> I am not going to lie. I'm nervous as about pulling all these off and putting them back on because I haven't done them for a long time and I don't want to make any mistakes. Settle down, sweetheart.
I'm not for the swearing. This is a family channel. Justing hurry up. Wa.
Yeah, bro.
>> Okay. How you going to keep this all together?
>> I'm going to not move until I've pulled them all off, laid them out, and put them back on. And no one's allowed to come near me.
And me circuit pliers are too big for these, which is just awesome. Who looked up the gears to make sure we ordered the right ones?
>> You did.
>> Did I?
>> Yeah.
>> Lucky they're right then. You didn't say that before we put it all back together.
>> Probably got more anxiety about this going back together than you do.
>> The parts fishes for Yamaha are really good. They show a lot of the gears and they show information on them so you can check a lot of things. I've got a bunch of new circlipips for the gearbox off.
So right now I'm just checking which circlip I need the birds. That gear.
That gear. Main shaft. We just fitted up two new gears. Counter shaft. Fitted up two new gears. Put new circlip on which is good. Finishing off putting these gears back on. Now it should just slide on. But when you're trying to film it as if they're going to just slide on. There we go. And then the last one.
So yeah, everything's set up like it all locks into place like it should, which means touchwood, they're all the right way around.
>> Any circlipips need to go on there?
>> Nothing goes on there. So this one doesn't have a circlip on there. It just sits straight down in the bearing in the case. I've put new circlipips on both shafts with them. So this is the old circlip. So as I replace one, I move get rid of the old one. I've got all my old gears and everything over here. So I just wanted to lay them all out, replace one at a time just so I knew exactly where they went. Hopefully I got them in the right place.
>> What are we doing here?
>> So I got the main shaft and the transmission shaft ready to go in the case. I've put the selector drum in. The selector forks have all got to get lined up as well. I've got them in the order I know they need to go. You got left, center, and right. I don't know whether you need to put the gears in, then put the forks in. That's what I'm hoping. Or whether you got to hold it all together.
So, I'm just going to try it. See how it works out. You know, I might have to pull them in and out a few times. I'm hoping I don't drop them and make any mistakes.
>> Wait, wait. Before you do that, what's this all about?
>> That's the selector. So, that is as you shift in your gear lever that changes and moves around, helping you get in and out of gears.
>> That's pretty cool. Actually, I'm going to leave that out right now. I'm going to put these in.
All right. So, they're in, which is probably the easy part. Now, it's going to be a matter of I can get my shift forks and everything in in place and then my selector pins. As I said, been many a moon since I've done something like this. So, I just don't know.
Hopefully, it just doesn't start in reverse. You know >> what's the worst that can happen? Like, Jesus, how hard is it to ride in reverse? If people can't ride in reverse, that's their problem. Where'd you put me shift drum? Thanks.
>> I remember a mate. He crashed in the supercross. He was riding a Husbana like must have been like 2000.
>> No wonder he crashed then.
>> But then he went and kicked it and it started in reverse.
>> Oh, really?
>> Yeah.
>> I've heard of it happening. Haven't seen it myself with a name like Jeffro. Of course it happened. We might be on here.
We might be all right.
>> You talked this down so much. It actually seems like you sort of know what you're doing. I got on YouTube yesterday, watched a few videos on how to work on a motorbike. Doesn't really help me much to be honest with you.
>> So, you still got the zip tie on here just to keep it all together.
>> Yeah, I'll move that off the sag.
>> What are you trying to do now?
>> I just want a little bit of oil in a container.
>> Absolute liquid gold.
>> It's really hard without Jenny here because I feel like I just I just have to work and actually do stuff. Um I don't have anyone to give a hard.
So, we've got the gears in. We've got the selector drum in. I've got the shift forks in. I've got the shift fork pins in. Funny thing's turning over. I wouldn't read about it. Now, I'm just going to check a parts diagram. Check the parts fish. Make sure I've got all me dowels in the right place on the case, which will be good. Next thing then after that is going to be I'm going to heat this center bearing up a bit and drop the crank in. So, that's going to be pretty cool. Just a slow process. As I have said multiple times, and you know, one of the reasons it does make me a bit nervous and I'm just very slow and taking my time with this is we didn't pull it apart. So, I don't have any pictures of it. The Yamaha parts diagrams are really good. So you can actually um have a good look at them, work stuff out. Even with the gears, it'll show you the cutouts and stuff for which way they go, which is nice. So little things like that. I just don't want to get starting the cases together and getting to the outside, then realize I've left out a Dell or a selector or a locator or something. So just taking our time making it happen, but we're getting there.
>> So it's probably a good thing that Jenna is not here.
>> Oh, she'd be a distraction and a half that kid. She'd just be bloody non-stop jibber jabbering, talking rubbish. We don't have time for rubbish talk around here, mate. I'm just trying to work and actually do the right things.
>> What do we do?
>> So, tranny's in. Um, I'm going to get the crank. We've got a new hot rod crank to go in it. Got that sitting over here.
It's all wrapped up nice and fresh.
There's a small end bearing, little end bearing, whatever people like to call it these days. Look at that. Shins pretty good. Look at that. Looks nice. Put it in. Going to put it in. I don't know which way it goes. You know which way it goes. We'll work it out. I'm just going to put a little bit of heat from the bearing first just to expand it a little bit. So, it will hopefully drop in a bit easier.
>> Add some heat in it. Yeah, they're able to put them together. I was looking at a crank like this with someone the other day. It was actually out of a Y25 someone had and they were saying about the heat in there and how it's got too hot and I explain to them that those heat marks actually are from when they assemble them when they press them together or however they do that, which is I don't know how they do it at the factory, but yeah, they come like that.
So, they were concerned that it been too hot.
>> Oh, bought one. You'd think it was brand new the way it just went together like that. It's alreadying.
>> So, yeah, that's good to go. My next step is going to check the parts fish.
Make sure I've got all my dows in that need to be there. Check the other case.
Make sure I've got all the retainers in there and any dowels or anything that need to be there. Then I will be using a little bit of sealant between the cases cuz the Yamahas don't run a center case gasket. So, a little bit of sealant. I know there's an O-ring that needs to go over this dow. So, I'll find the correct one for that. And then we'll sit the cases together, bolt them together, and hopefully all the gears work still and crank turns around. So, we'll see what happens.
>> So, Ollie, come check this out. You ever put a engine back together? Tell him if he's done it right.
>> No. Beach knows what he's doing here.
You sure? I >> think. So, your little uh block.
>> Yeah, it's >> So, you're not putting that much on?
>> No, you just put like a real light like I put on my finger, put it around, and then you just do like a light dab all the way around. Sure, everyone has their way to do it. Everyone has their different product they like to use, but for me, this works a treat. So, hopefully we've got all the bearings and everything in where it needs to be.
RUBBER MALLET DISAPPEARED.
THANKS. I'LL TAKE THAT ONE.
Crank's still turning. Gears are still turning. Cases are together. Yamaha parts fish is really good because it actually tells you what bolts lengths to go where. So, so if you have a look here, they got the bolt diagram and it tells you the size of all them. So, you know, these ones at the top, number nine. You look down here. So, this is actual. It says 6x 55 as in the part number. So, that's a 6 mil bolt, 55 mil long. So, I find that really handy. I use a special measuring stick here.
Cool. 55.
>> It does.
>> So, this is the right hand crank seal.
Um, I just double check the parts. Fish.
It might sound stupid, but a lot of the seals, like the water pump seals and the oil seals, some of them can go in what might feel like back to thumb because they're designed to keep the water or the oil in a certain way. So this one, I've just double checked it. Goes in the way a normal seal would. So, you know, flat side out. But with the water pump seals, it's different. You know, you have one going each way. So, I like to just press them in by hand if possible and not tap them too much. Tap tap tap it in.
>> Give it a little tappy tap tap taper.
>> Seems to work pretty good. I don't want to say it too early, but don't say a goddamn thing. So, cases are together.
I've just got the gear selector. I got the gear shaft in. I just want to run through the gears. I'm in neutral at the moment. I'm holding the clutch shaft on this side. Neutral. So it seems like first, which is good, second, third. You got to put a bit of pressure on them as well when you're doing it. So it can be a pain in the bum. There you go.
>> What are they? Six speed. Is that six gears? So it feels like we got six.
>> Two down, three up.
>> I thought they were three down, three up.
>> Feels like we're going through all the gears, though, so that's good.
>> Nice work. We go all the way back to neutral. We caught our gears, so we'll just keep on plugging away. Got some gears in this side. Going to put the clutch in. Got the washer in there.
Bearing.
>> All right. So, what are these? What are these gears on here? This side.
>> Um, so you got your kickstarter gear. I think that's the idler gear that goes between the kickstarter and the clutch.
As you can see on the back of the clutch basket, you got gears on there. So, yeah, it's all coming along. We're put reusing the old basket. It's not too bad. We are putting a new clutch hub in it. All lines up. Pretty sweet. That's the washer. Um, I've got a new clutch hub over here. Genuine Yamaha one. Going to put that in there.
going to put the washer on the nut. I'm just going to actually I'm not going to put the nut on yet because I need to tighten it up and I don't like ever putting a nut or a bolt in and then you have to come back and tighten it. So, I'm going to sit the washer on there.
We've got a new clutch for it. So, I'm going to grab that um put all the plates and everything in there. Then we'll put the nut on and then we can tighten it all up.
>> All right. So, what's generator fashion, project manager hasn't come through with the goods. I went to put a new clutch in. There's no new clutch in the box. So, I'm just heading over to the showroom. Going to grab a fresh clutch and put it in. Um, and yeah, we'll definitely be having to talk to Jenner about that because it's just not on. It's just not on. Got better things to do than run around after her.
>> We need a clutch for an08 YZ125. So, like a kit with fibers and steels, maybe springs, just see what we've got in stock.
>> If you put a click and collect order in, it would be ready for us right now.
>> If Jenna had to put a click collect order in for us and she didn't let us down again.
>> Good friend doesn't blame >> I'm not friends with her.
Hey, thank you very much.
>> We'll go and put this in and hopefully we're not back soon. Have >> fun.
>> Thank you.
>> New clutch.
>> So, when I've seen other people buy new clutches, they put fibers and whatever in some oil.
>> Yes.
>> What's the story behind that?
>> Everyone's different. Some people oil them up, some don't. I like to put them in and I tip a bit of oil over them. I don't soak the crap out of them, but I just tip some oil over them as they're going in. So, that's my plan what I'll be doing with these ones as well. Some of these have got fibrous material on them. And then some of these >> Yeah, fibers and steels.
>> Fibers and steels. Most Japanese stuff, they start with fiber, end with a fiber.
Some of your KDMs and your European stuff, they run um like they'll start with a steel plate. That's why KDMs have got a bit of a noisier clutch.
>> Any other tips and tricks you got to do with these things?
>> Not that I know of, but >> you can't put them in backwards.
>> I don't think you really can. I'm sure everyone has a different opinion where they like to do it.
>> Beautiful. Pretty happy with that. Then we got to bend the tabs up.
>> So, what's the purpose of bending the tabs up? Just so the nut ever comes loose, it doesn't actually come out.
>> So yesterday, where did we end up?
>> We ended up with the motor sitting on the bench. Got the clutch in. Got all that side in. I've just now put the actuator for the power valve in. So I've sat that in there. Just sat the clutch cover gasket on there. So just getting all the bolts ready for for the clutch cover and then we'll be putting that on.
So it's really good with the Yamaha bolts. You can work the length of the bolt out off the part number. So you know it'll have like a six and a 40 in it. So for instance, we need six 30 mil bolts. So, I've got them there. This is a 40 mil. So, I'm just checking them all to make sure cuz we want them all perfect. And as we said, we didn't pull this apart. So, you know, we do have quite a few random bolts and stuff. So, I'm just trying to make sure we've got everything perfect. Hopefully, this should be a 50 mil bolt. Yes, it is. So, now I've got all the clutch cover bolts ready to go on. So, let's put the clutch cover on. Let's put the bolts in.
>> So, what I didn't see yesterday was you put this gasket on.
>> I did. I put the clutch cover gasket on.
It's It's quite a big tedious job.
>> Well done. I'm proud of you.
>> Hey, I'll do what I can.
>> You did such a great job with that gasket. I'll do what I can.
Come on, little fella. Nope. Doesn't want to go my bad.
>> Oh, you >> What happened there? Is that meant to be torn like that?
>> No.
>> Is that meant to >> It's not You stupid.
>> What happened?
>> You stupid.
>> What happened?
>> Locator wasn't in there and it popped out.
>> So, what do you do now?
>> Get another one. Lucky we have a warehouse stock.
>> I'm glad we do cuz it's going to be a long day. We're off to a rough start.
>> It's going to be a long day. Telling you now.
>> Thank god you haven't got to put up with Jenna.
>> Oh, god damn How's that earring going, though?
>> It's pretty good. Thanks. Thanks for asking.
>> Have you worked it out?
>> Yep.
>> Have you ordered it yet?
>> Yep.
>> Can you order it? Let's go get it.
>> The gasket?
>> Yeah.
>> All right, let's go get one.
>> Hey, I didn't get to see what you did.
>> So, I've just sat the clutch cover on, put it on there. Now, we got to put all the bolts in.
>> When did you get the new gasket?
>> I ran over to the showroom and grabbed one. So, >> thanks, bro. Thought you were going to wait for me to come back.
>> I was going to be I just don't have time to wait all day. You like Ollie and his lunch break. You should just disappear.
>> I love how you've taken like a leaf out of Ollie's book. got things all set out nice and neatly.
>> I had to get things somewhat organized and you know, especially cuz we didn't pull it apart. There's bolts and stuff all over the place. Like there's just random stuff being put together. I just grabbed one of the bolts. It was the wrong one. So now I've got the correct one. Maybe it's the correct one.
>> That's the problem with you Rogue builders. Just start putting stuff in.
Clutch basket cover on. Is that it? Is that what that is?
>> That's the pressure plate.
>> I didn't even see you put the pressure plate on.
>> You should have paid more attention. And then I didn't even see you put this one in.
>> You should have paid You should have paid more attention.
>> You take this somewhere else to get fixed.
>> Maybe I did actually just put the clutch cover on. So I just want to make sure everything's still turning over freely as we keep moving forward with each part. Just want to keep doing so and checking everything's working, which it is. All is good so far.
>> Now it's all back together to that extent.
>> Yep.
>> Give us a rundown of what each part of the motor is just for someone out there that has no idea. So you got the center crank cases, the crankshaft which is here. So you got the crank shaft coming out this side. So the magneto and stator will go in here for the electronics.
That's your counter shaft there. So the front sprocket goes on there. Spinner around. So we got the cold clutch. So your clutch basket, pressure plate, springs, bolts, all your clutch plates are in here. Water pump sits up front here. Power valve arm. So once the cylinder goes on, that'll get connected up. The shaft coming out of here is the kickstarter shaft. Um, yeah, oil plug will go in there. Inlet manifold will go in there. So, hopefully in the next couple of hours, we should have all those bits and pieces on there and we can show you. Inlet manifold, we got the carbon reads on this one. It's got a V4 read block, which is really cool. So, all that will go on there and nicely.
>> So, the fuel air mixture goes in there.
>> Yeah. Shorts goes in here and then, you know, goes through the crank and the piston and bang.
>> Where does the exhaust >> fires up? Exhaust comes out this side.
So, you'll see once we get the cylinder on there, the exhaust is coming out here.
>> Settle down, sweetheart.
>> Getting excited. Would you look at that, eh? Would you look at that? Just look at it. Look at it.
>> Proud of you, mate.
>> Where's the outer clutch cover gasket? I mean, the clutch cover. Where's the rest of the parts?
>> I thought you were organized like Ollie.
>> An ignition cover over here for you.
>> That's the um STA cover.
>> Yeah, STA ignition cover. Same. Same.
But now I need the outer clutch cover.
And it would seem like it's gone missing.
>> Did you ever have one to start with?
>> I don't know. We didn't pull it apart.
Did you find me an ignition cover up in there? I'm going home. I told you I was ready to quit. I'm out.
So, got new outer clutch cover gasket on. Outer clutch cover. We were looking at putting a outer clutch cover on it, but decided to go the genuine one cuz it looks good. It's in good condition. And >> it cleaned up good. Look at the vapor blasting.
>> Yeah, she's primo.
Now, what are we up to?
>> Uh, just giving the stator a bit of a clean off with contact cleaner so we can um make sure it's all nice and clean and working well. All out, clean up the plug.
>> So, what is this? What is the STA and what does it do?
>> So, STA runs electronics as a magneto spins around the STA, creates electricity. I can't go much further in depth of it cuz honestly, I don't know that much, but I do know that it helps, you know, helps run the bike.
So that's where the stator sits.
>> Yeah.
>> What does the flywheel do?
>> So flywheel spins around the stator.
Magneto flywheel, same thing. Spins around it. That causes the electricity to then run the motorcycle. As I said, I'd love to give it in more in-depth, but I don't understand. You know, electrics are not my forte. I wish I had learned a bit more about electrics, but yeah, here we are.
>> So is this the same flywheel that you can make heavier or lighter and change?
>> You can. So you can make them heavier or lighter to change, you know, the the power curve of the bike. If you made it heavier, it would slow it down, make it smoother. You lightened it up, it would rev quicker.
Motor's still spinning over, so that's a good sign. I know we do have a new stator cover for it. So we've got to head over to the showroom later and grab that. So for now, I'll leave it there because I'm happy with where we're up to. We'll flip it back over and keep going.
>> What? You still didn't get to what this was?
>> No, I don't even know what it is to be honest with you. I just put it back in.
All right. It's the clutch arm. So the clutch cable comes down, comes through the case, connects onto that. There's a push rod and everything in the clutch that pushes all the clutch plates. So this will pull up with the cable, opens the clutch up, allows you to do what you need to do. So I think it's time that we uh get the cylinder out and get moving forward on the top end.
>> So there's probably a few things here we can get rid of here.
>> Well, I think we're using the gear shifter. I don't even know if we are putting a new gear shifter on it. That's a Jenna department that one. She probably has organized a new gear shifter for it. So for now, I'm leaving it right there. So, we're going to open up the cylinder box. Someone's already had a quick look in it. Had a little sneak peek. So, we got the cylinder head. Ciro cleaned all this up really, really well. They've done a great job on it. The cylinder is all here. So, we've got all the power valve, all the studs, everything for the cylinder here. So, we need to reinstall all that, which I'm super stoked about. The piston, I think they put a new sleeve in it, and then they've set it up to the piston, so it's all in tolerance.
>> So, why did we get the cylinder sent off to the circuit? It's quite worn, you know, like it's 08 model, so it's done a bit of work. I don't know if it's had a freshen up before or not, but it's Yeah, you can see some score marks in this cylinder. Nothing bad. Like, it wasn't terrible, but definitely needed to freshen up. This >> looking really nice. So, what do they do? That looks like a full new >> So, they put a new sleeve in it, and then, you know, they have to match all the ports up in it. They set the tolerance and the clearance between the piston and the sleeve, um, between the cylinder, so it'll be nice and firm and what it needs to be. So, as you can see, all here, you know, when they put it in, they have to clean all the edges up here. I just like with a porting tool or die grinder, they have to match it all up. So, they've done a brilliant job like that. Just it just it looks perfect. So, it's going to run a million bucks once we get it back together.
>> We still got the same size piston we have we wanted.
>> Yeah, I think it's all standard size. We didn't we did uh throw the idea around of going big ball, but no point. We wanted to keep it nice and reliable. I don't know much about big balls on these. So, >> Yamaha YZ15 Fant. Where are we at now?
Um, I've just put the new little pal valve seal in here. So, you can see it just sits in there. So, when we slide all the pel valve um and everything through, it'll go in. So, I am just going to put the studs in now. So, I got to reinstall the studs after getting the cylinder cleaned and done and everything that's been done to it. So, get them in.
And then I'll um just have a look at parts diagram. And I've got a manual there so I can work out exactly which way the power valve goes just so I can have it set up exactly how it needs to be.
>> All right. So, there's the power valve.
Obviously, very important part. Where does the power band go? The power valve will go in the cylinder here. And then the power band is just in there. So, it's hard to find the power band. Um, I've been looking for it for years. No expert on it. I'm going to do some googling. Then I'm going to head into the MX door showroom and the warehouse.
I'm going to see if we can find a power band. I've heard the red ones are good.
So, I'm hoping to get a red one. I thought, you know what? After all these years, I've never had power band. I think it'll be pretty cool. So, >> and the red's going to match the color scheme.
>> The red's going to match the bike. So, even though you won't see the power band, it's in the motor. It's just I believe we just have to go with the red one. So yeah, there's all sorts of different shapes and sizes apparently, but looking forward to getting it and, you know, finally learned a bit about it and seeing what the power band's all about.
>> All right, so being serious now. You've got bolt upside down and a bolt the right way up. What are you doing?
>> So I'm just locking two nuts together on the stud here. So what you do is you get two two nuts, lock them together, and then you use that to tighten the stud down into the cylinder.
So that one's done. So, I have to do that to all five stars.
>> You're not just a pretty face, are you?
>> Well, I definitely don't have that going for me.
>> You seem to be looking at diagrams a lot. Do you actually know what you're doing? Like, I'm starting to question whether an ATV guy should be doing anything on a motocross bike.
>> All right. Who are you and what are you doing here?
>> I think realistically, you guys didn't do your homework. I think it's a little bit sad to be honest with you. I'm an ATV guy. Look, I'm just a cook. What do I know about bikes?
You are the last person I know to have whole shoted a 125 race though. This saying something for like what you're about 90 kilos.
>> I might be just a tad over 90. It's all about, you know, weight distribution.
Um, you know, I really put a lot of time and effort into getting to the weight I needed to be for that race.
>> I can't remember exactly, but I'm pretty sure you did a little bit of a look over, too. Like you were that far in front.
>> I had a crack.
>> Well, was it a big one?
>> No, it wasn't. I just ran some race fuel, put a secondhand pipe on, and went for gold.
>> So, you're probably the most qualified one here.
>> Let's not get carried away. While you're there, can you please grab me the Allen keys out the bottom of that draw?
>> These ones.
Thanks. Actually, none of them fit. Open it again.
Uh, where's the normal? Where's the other ones? There's some missing.
>> What do you mean?
>> Of course, there's some missing.
>> What are they?
>> I'll use these. I wanted the Allen keys to go on. Can you please take them away?
You using my space.
Don't want those ones. Sometimes in life you get where you don't want this. Do something.
That's my wife, brother.
That looks way better. HEY, >> you worked that out yet? It's way different to a raptor, isn't it?
>> So much harder when you didn't pull something apart, you know, with these plates, as you can see here. So, you got the power valve. I worked out which side goes in which, but you know, there is multiple ways that they can bolt up, you know, and I honestly I don't know. Like, I'm going off parts diagrams trying to work out which way they need to be. Um, >> looking at these two things here. Yep.
>> The good thing about all of this is we're starting to cut down the amount of bolts we got left.
>> Yeah, it's pretty positive.
>> Are they going all in the right spot?
>> Oh, I think there's a few extras in there to be honest with you. I will say I really do like the diagrams for the parts fish. Um, with Yamaha, it is quite easy to work out things. Even with the seals, like if you look at a picture of a seal in a Yamaha parts fish or a manual, it'll show the flat side or the back side of the seal, which I guess looks like a cutout side, which is really, really helpful. So, as much as this might be a bit of a slow process, I do believe having all that there is helping us.
So, I've assembled the whole power valve, worked out which way it goes. The parts, fish diagram, and the manual was really helpful. Got everything in place.
All the little pins, the locators, the bolts, got the new ceiling spacers, spring, everything. So, it's working really well. Doing what it needs to do.
So, I've just got to put the last little bolt in here, which is just the there's a little keeper here that holds the pel valve in the cylinder. So, I just need to put that in there like that. Get myself a little Phillips head screwdriver. Except someone's fully mounted this one. So, I'm going to have to find a new screw.
>> I'm proud of you. I never thought I would see the day of Luke Beachy quad god putting together a 125 motor.
>> What can I say? I surprise myself sometimes. I don't surprise many others, but I got a new screw here for it. So, I'm pretty stoked with that. It's hard being an outcast. Being a ATV quite outcast. You just get called in for certain things like this when people need you. Been trying to hang out with streeter for years.
>> Not just that, you're a redhead as well.
So, you're like you're kind of >> I'm not a redhead. I'm going gray.
>> Yeah. You're not gray enough yet. You're still redhead.
>> Don't come around here. coming around here like that. That's going too far. I got nothing against red heads.
>> No, but you're >> I'm just not one.
>> You are a red head quad rider. Basically an outcast.
>> You're going too far.
>> So impact driver's got forward, reverse, back and forward, in out, however you want to say it. So the way it works is when you hit it, it pushes down and it gives like a force and it turns like so I want to nip this bolt up a little bit and it's hard to do a little one like this. So I'll hit it and it will just nip it forward a bit. They're really good for getting bolts out. So, a lot of the time when you get bolts and stuff that are stuck, you'll use them to get them out.
So, I've just nipped it up a little bit.
Happy with it. All good. So, so far you've had to put up with me. Or actually, I had to put up with you for the last 2 days. No, Jenna or Ollie to give you hang [ __ ] on you or talk rubbish. How have I done? Have I gone all right?
>> I think you've done all right. You pushed the envelope a little bit a few times. You definitely pushed the envelope a little bit. I think >> would Jenna be proud.
>> Jenna would be proud. Jenna would be proud. Jenna doesn't know better. You know better. Okay, so cylinder's ready to go. I'm pretty stoked with that. We still got to put the Oh, no. We've already got the dowels in the case here.
Cylinder's pretty mint. I will oil it up before we put the piston in. So, I'll show you that shortly. We've got the fresh piston here. We're going with the vertex. We've picked the B size, which is good cuz you generally got ABC, sometimes D. Just sort of common habit.
Start with a B is what I do. So, yeah, we've got it all here. Got the rings, a pin. Got to put one of the piston circlipips in and start assembling it.
So, let's say someone was going to put a 144 kit in. What would be different?
>> As far as I know, the 144 kit, you run the same bottom end and everything. So, literally, you just be changing the cylinder. It would have a a bigger ball hole through the center of it, which then would run a bigger piston. I'm pretty sure that's how it works. I don't know whether the head has to get machined out or anything at the top.
This one we've had machined and cleaned up because it had a few little marks in it. But, yeah, I think it's quite basic to do a kit like that. And we did throw around the idea of doing it. But at this stage, we sort of don't know what we're going to use this 125 for. So, you know, I like the idea of just keeping it stock, keeping it how it is, and you know, it's going to be nice and reliable, and everyone will be happy.
So, what have we done? We've just put the So, I've put the It's got an arrow on the piston, which always faces forward. I've put one piston circlip.
I've put the left hand side in. So, once the piston goes on there, I'll put my pin through from the right. So, what I need to do now is I've got my pin here.
I've got to get my little M bearing which I have over here. Now I need to get a little bit of two-stroke oil because I always like to put a little bit of two-stroke oil on the bearing on the pin. And then I will need a little bit of two-stroke oil to put in the cylinder as well. I'm not sure where the two-stroke oil has gone. I did have some for the KDM that we found there. Got it.
So little bit of two-stroke oil on there. That one in there with the piston. Got the pin. So a little bit of two-stroke oil on the pin. Piston in there. So that's in. So now first thing we want to do then does that just sit in there like that?
>> Yeah. So, and the first thing we want to do now that we've got it at that point though is we want to put the other side piston circlip in. Cuz imagine if you didn't put that in, forgot to do it, got distracted. I'm sure it's happened. I don't believe I've ever done it, but not anyway. I like to put a rag around here because unfortunately putting these in, they can fling out. I've had them where I've gone to put them in, flung it out, dropped it in the bottom end, and you're sitting there like a fisherman with a magnet. And the truth is, when I go fishing, I never catch anything. So, it's pretty much the same.
So, that's popped in nicely. Pretty happy with that. All sitting in place.
All is good. Now we need to find base gasket.
>> Yeah, that's the old one. Is this it?
That's the old one. Here's a fresh one.
So, goes on that way. Careful. Get it out over the dowels there. So, I got a bit of fresh two-stroke oil on a brand new rag. Just Just help it all slide together. It's only a single ring piston. I should be able to hold this together with one hand and slide the cylinder on. It should go together fairly easy. You know, when you talk about it like that though, it's when it never works out easily.
All gone down in place pretty good. Hold the cylinder down so it doesn't move.
Before I put the nuts on, I just want to check that the motor turns over. To turn it over, which means I haven't grabbed the piston ring or anything on one of the ports. So, it's just how it needs to be.
>> Look at you go. Basically finished.
>> Getting there. I got some new nuts here for the cylinder.
>> These nuts.
>> These nuts.
>> GOT STRAIGHT UP. I need ignition cover.
Oh, mate. Oh, look. What a guy. That was quick. We've got the sanded ignition cover. It doesn't look great. It looks pass. It looks terrible. So, we're going to throw a nice new color one on. It will look pretty. Look at that. Looks way better.
>> How's it look over there? Looks pretty good. I'm not going to show you how.
Wait till it's bolted on so you can see just how good it looks. Friend, >> what else you got?
>> Uh, so also needed a oil filler plug.
Didn't need one. We got the old one, plastic one, but we've gone with the works connection one. This looks trick.
So, may as well just finish off with those last few little bits and pieces.
But back to getting this done. I am about to put the power bel.
>> Oh, boy. Look at that.
>> Oh, sick.
>> What do you got there?
>> Well, you're too busy trying to put the nice new oil filler cap in. I've quickly put the power valve cover on. So, I'm going to knit these bolts up.
>> The engine stands not standing the engine.
>> You're taking your time. I'll just get this.
>> No, that's going to be the last thing we put on. You can wait your turn >> and it's done.
>> It's people like you that just sit things in place. You don't get the right bolts and you don't make it look all pretty. You don't put the gasket on.
Take some care and time with it, my friend.
>> Too much yapping from you and just get working. It's taking forever.
>> It is taking forever had to put up with you.
>> In Japan, they would have had this whole engine and motorcycles together.
>> In Japan, they got little fingers of getting wherever they need to get.
>> These big clown fingers.
>> Well, you're getting pretty close.
You're going to have to get on to Ollie and Jenna soon. Let them know that there's a motor nearly ready for them to put in.
>> What? You're not putting it in that?
>> Hey, I put the thing together. I'm not putting it in. I got enough stuff to do.
>> Like what?
>> Apparently, I've got a real job somewhere here that I have to go and find out what I need to do there.
>> It's ATVs. No one cares about that.
>> No one cares until they do.
>> All right, we're now down to the business end of things.
>> Just put the cylinder head O-rings in there. Cylinder head is about to go on.
So, it's all done. It was sitting in place until you touched it, my friend.
>> I've just cleaned up the uh copper washers to go on the cylinder head here.
>> What do they crush a little bit? So, it gives it >> just little crosswashes. So, what I like to do is I get a bit of sandpaper, give them a little bit of a back and forth, figure eight either side, just to clean the surface up a little bit. I think it works well.
>> Is that it? We're done.
>> Nearly. I just got to nip them up by hand a bit. And then I do need to check what Oh, you haven't even put the ignition cover on.
>> Not yet. I'm putting that on last. I just got to check what torque the cylinder head nuts need to be. So, set the torque at uh 20 lb these are.
Got this really nice SIG chrome torque wrench here, which our good friend Cory Moore has lent us to use today, which is really good. And that's all she wrote.
>> No, no, no, no. We got this. We got this.
>> Yeah, I know. I know. We're going to keep going. I'm just packing this up.
I'm not putting that on yet because you want me to.
>> Come on, CLETUS. COME ON.
>> COME ON. Come over here. Come in.
Come on.
>> Got to work out the bolts for it and get the gasket. I'm putting that on at the end. What the? No. No. Not.
>> All right. So, we can put this on.
>> Yes.
>> That stage. We will have to pull it off to connect the clutch cable up later, but I just want to get here. Let me Let me help. Let me help. I can help.
>> This is the last I'll finish it for you.
This is the last part. I've done the rest of it.
>> Turns up when the job's done.
>> A blister. She turns up after all the work's done. Oh, here you go.
>> Happy to help.
>> Here you go. Where? What?
>> Yeah. Look, I got this. I got this. I got this. I got this. I got it. You just sit there and watch.
>> Oh, just sit here.
>> Yeah.
>> Righty tighty, lefty loosey.
>> Righty tighty, lefty loosey. Yep.
>> I hope you break a bolt and I'm just going to walk out, >> mate. I wouldn't break a bolt. I'll strip it. Butt.
>> Yep. I'll strip that one.
break.
>> Why is this one tight?
>> Don't do anymore.
>> Yeah, I know.
>> One job, Jenn. One damn job.
>> Your bolt should be fine. If the other ones are too tight, >> did you tighten them?
>> No, I didn't. I didn't do them tight.
>> Come in and make the job that much. We could be finished right now.
>> Everyone done?
>> I'm done. Get out.
>> Hard to find good help around there. E, it was just easier when it was just you, me, and K.
>> Bloody hell. It was nothing wrong with it on my end.
>> Looks good. Does look good.
>> Well, well, well. Would you look at that? Mic drop.
>> All right. So, we're looking pretty good. We just got a few little bits and pieces to do. The motor's going tomorrow. I'm going to sit back and watch Jenner and Ollie do that and just give advice from the sidelines. So, I'm looking forward to it. Might get myself a six-pack and just enjoy the day.
>> Hey, it's only 10 to 1. You can do this right now. What?
>> Yeah, let's chuck it in now.
>> Come on. There's some [ __ ] >> Sixack. Right. We need to pull the swing arm bolt out to do this. So, you want to pull that nut off. Put the bolts in and then we're done for today. Lift the back up for me. I'll see pull this through.
There you go. We should be able to sit it in there hopefully.
>> Which side is it going in?
>> Don't know. Guess we'll find out. Does anyone want to pull the fuel tank off so I can Thank you.
All right. Now, I'm going to try that.
You are kidding. Starting to look like a bike slts up. Bit of fresh brace. Engine mounting bolts, I should say. Long one a short one. Let's see where they go.
>> Can I get a >> No. No. No. You can't.
>> Can I get A >> YOU GO.
WHY IS THERE so many leftover bolts you bey um >> there's an awful lot?
>> No, all the plastic bolts and everything are there. So, I've changed out a few engine bolts and nuts and stuff here and there, but there is a lot of extras there. And there's a lot of like seat bolts, plastic bolts, fender bolts, radiator bolts.
>> Did you rebuild the car?
>> No, they just happen to be in the box.
So, we need to pull the carby apart and see if any of the jets are missing. But I don't think they're the jets out of this KBY or the needle because there's a little spring there. I pulled the air screw out to see and the spring and everything was there. So I think these are parts left over from something else.
So we will pop the bowl of the carby off and have a look over. I don't believe that would be the main jet in this KBY.
I think it would be a hex one. So that's what makes me think it's just extra stuff found and someone's justing with me. Engine bolts, plastic bolts, sideways bolts, bolts have just come up from the ground.
>> All right, you got this. Do you need me for anything else?
>> You guys keep with me. I'm going to lose my [ __ ] Put it back on.
>> What?
>> You've been here for 5 minutes and's going missing. I HAVEN'T EVEN BEEN THIS.
OH, you mean this?
>> I put IT WAS RIGHT THERE. Is that what you're looking for?
>> Who put it there then? It wasn't there cuz I put it on.
>> Yeah, I took them off your bike.
>> I will inspect my bike when this job's done.
>> You know what? I actually don't have time for a lot of those things because I'm working.
>> I nearly said it with a straight face.
Hey, there's one thing that you know on that original letter, wherever it was, do this in 3 days, and we've spent 2 days just on the motor.
>> All right, so it's been roughly 2 or 3 days, give or take, and we've ended up with what looks like a complete motor.
However, the amount of bolts left on Beach's workbench is quite concerning to say the least. But the bike is starting to take shape, which is pretty cool to see. The guys have come a long way since that fateful morning last week, opening up the MX door workshop to a bunch of unexplained motorcycle parts and boxes.
They've come far, but still looks like there's a lot of work to do. This week, we're giving away a Ballard's complete tool bag with tools to one lucky bike builder. Just leave a comment below and it could be yours. Here's what's coming up in the next episode.
>> That was mad. Never worked on one myself. Stays in one piece.
>> Get it on. Let's get it on. you for real life. So, we're going to kick it in the gut.
>> I'm not
