A Deeply Necessary Conversation About Knitwear in Horror Movies本站添加:
How's it going? Don't have to lie down.
So, today I thought we'd do something a little bit different because in all honesty, I could not be asked to do research and read articles this week.
Had a very difficult week.
>> [music] >> So, we're just not going to do that this week.
So, instead I thought we'd just kind of do something really fun.
Yeah, I thought today we would kind of just like look up some of my favorite horror movies and look at the knitting in it.
I just thought it'd be fun because I looked at some of them the day because [music] I love horror movies. That's like the one thing I watch while I knit. It's like I actively just watch horror movies even though I've seen them like a millions and millions [music] of times.
It's my jam. I love it. It's my comfort.
So, I was like, "You know what? There's actually quite a lot of knitting in there." [music] So, I thought I'd made a list and I thought we should go through it go through it together and just kind of like just gawk over it really and just be like, "I [music] can't." If you've never seen these films, it's completely fine because I'm going to kind of look at them as a knitter. So, don't worry about that. I'll also kind of give like a brief explanation about what the horror film is about just to give you some context.
>> [music] >> But, I won't give any spoilers, so don't worry. And I'd be interested to see what your favorite horror movies are because I know you like horror movies. Everyone says they don't like horror movies but [music] they've just not seen the right kind of horror movies. People have this idea that horror movies are just like gore fests or they're just like cheap jump scares [music] and a lot of horror movies aren't like that. They're actually really deep and kind [music] of they explore themes where other kind of genres don't really like to get into.
So, it's just it's like the perfect [music] genre for anyone who's ever felt ordered.
>> [music] >> So, that's why I I've always loved it.
So, yeah.
Join me on this kind of Basically, you're just going to watch me absolutely autistically [music] explain how much I love these films in excruciating excruciating detail. So, I hope you're ready for that. So, grab your knitting needles and [music] crochet hooks or tapestry yarn or whatever the [ __ ] you use, >> [music] >> and let's just have a fun little trip down um Matthew's special interest horror reviews.
So, this is my kind [music] of shame corner where I hide all of my yarn, because like I buy my yarn on cones, and you can see it's becoming a bit of a problem because I'm running out of room.
And there's also this shame bucket that has all my skeins in, that my cat has stolen, and you've seen what she's done to that.
I It's my own fault for leaving it that long, but whatever.
>> [snorts] >> Um so, yeah, let's let's get on with it.
I was going to do a tier list of being like I'll tier them kind of like S tier until like F tier, but I was [music] like, in all honesty, they would all probably be S tier because I just love them. So, I was like, I can't really do that. So, I think we're just going to go by [music] We're just going to go through them and just have a gander and just see what we can do. I did write some notes on these, but not a lot because I kind of wanted to just wing it because I've got a lot of knowledge up here. May May not seem it. Oh, you [ __ ] Okay, it's fine. So, to start with, I thought it'd be cool to start with like probably the most iconic horror movie knitwear piece ever, and that is Freddy Krueger's jumper. So, Freddy Krueger's jumper is iconic, [music] obviously, but people don't actually know that in the original film, it's actually [music] red and black, not red and green.
But, anyway.
So, Freddy Krueger was in A Nightmare on Elm Street, which came out in 1984 and was directed by Wes [music] Craven, who is daddy.
Um the basic story of the film is >> [music] >> that these teenagers are having nightmares, um they're all dreaming of this man with a dirty sweater, a hat, um a hand with [music] like razor fingers on it, and he invades their dreams and tries to murder them. Um [music] if you die in the dream, you die for real. Um they have to kind of figure out a way to stop him, and obviously that involves not going to sleep. [music] Uh there is probably there's six in the kind of original run of the series, >> [music] >> and then they did like a a number seven, which is called A New Nightmare, which they kind of give Freddy Krueger a different vibe, [music] and which is really cool and really metal.
Um and then they did Freddy vs. Jason, and then they remade it.
And then we've not had Freddy Krueger since, which is a shame.
But, what I want to talk about is So, if you look at the original sweater in the film, it [music] is just a simple like striped red and black jumper, and it doesn't have stripes on the on the actual sleeves.
And it's just simple dirty, you know, vibes. [music] And then when you look at some of the other movies, cuz it kind of evolves through the series, and I like to think that the sweater is a kind of I don't know, a metaphor for his soul or something, because it gets like dirtier and dirtier as the franchise continues. [music] Um I think it's Freddy vs. Jason where it kind of looks a lot different. It has more of a fisherman's rib kind of look.
I I think this is the best version of the sweater, and it's like red and green, it's dirty, and you can see like on the neckline, it's [music] a bit frayed. And it just it just looks so much better. It looks more high quality than in the first one, which obviously the first one was like >> [music] >> quite low-budget horror film.
So, you can't really blame them for that, but I love this film. Um I don't think the original is the best one, shock. I really don't. Um I'm going to say this right now. I think Nightmare on Elm Street 3, Dream Warriors, [music] is the best one ever. It's so camp. It is so amazing. Honestly, it's amazing.
If you've not seen an Elm Street, you need [music] to go watch it. It's not scary, I promise. It's just like really fun and campy and just like it's just pure '80s, like gack, really. [music] Especially number four, Nightmare on Elm Street 4, Dream Master, is like so '80s, it's incredible. It's like pastels. It's like Tuesday Knight, the song for it. So, she was a person that replaced the original actor for Kristen, who was played by Patricia Arquette, because apparently she got pregnant or I don't know. That was what I read, but I don't think that's true. Um so, they replaced her and she was She Her real name is Tuesday Knight, and she did a song for the actual film when it came out called Nightmare, and it is such a banger.
>> [music] >> I'll I I don't I don't think I can play it here, but please, for the love of God, please go check it out because it's such a banger. Like, not even like unironically, it's just amazing. So, [music] I'm going to leave you with that, but nevertheless, it's iconic. So, next one we're going to talk about a kind of recent film. [music] Um this is um A Quiet Place: Day Zero.
So, this is a prequel to A Quiet Place, and Quiet Place the the plot of the film is [music] um these kind of aliens come to Earth and they attack on on sight um >> [music] >> by sound. So, they're very kind of like bats in a way.
And everyone basically has to like be quiet. And this is kind of like a prequel of like how it happened. And I love the cardigan in it because it looks so comfy. [music] And she's got the cat in it. And fun fact about this film, the main actress in this film, Pia, [music] she did not like cats when she started this film.
She was like, "No, [ __ ] that. [ __ ] cats." And obviously she had to kind of interact [music] with this cat.
And she ended up falling in love with the cat. And now she's got like loads of cats. And I follow her on Instagram. I love seeing her with her cat. She's like obsessed. And I'm like, >> [music] >> "See? They got you. They got you, girl."
Um but she's basically in the film just carrying around this cat in a cardigan.
And that is what I want to be in my life.
And the cardigan looks to be kind of a I want to say like simple construction [music] cardigan. It looks to be kind of like a saddle shoulder construction, maybe. Um cuz it's not like a set-in sleeve.
Um but it's very kind of like boxy and like baggy. [music] And on the side here, it looks to have kind of like a very small like a light cable pattern on it. I think it's really stunning. I love the color as well because it's like a yellow, [music] but because it's like dirty and like kind of grainy, it looks kind of green.
[music] So, it's kind of like in between a like a greeny-yellowy color. And I just think it's stunning.
And Joseph actually wears it >> [music] >> um at the end of the film as well. And you kind of see more detail of it. And it has kind of like a thick collar up here, but it kind of [music] comes down to here. Cuz I think it's originally a men's cardigan. Cuz from what I remember, I've only seen this film [music] once, but it's her dad's that her dad gave it her. So, I think that's why it's kind of looks really boxy on her. But it just gives me like cozy librarian vibes. [music] So, I'm obsessed.
And the beanie she wears as well, I love a good beanie. This looks like to be like [music] a simple fisherman's beanie with like a one-by-one rib. Very stunning. It looks amazing on her.
Um I mean, I don't know what to say about this beanie, but [music] he's a great colleague. It goes really well with the yellow cardigan, and I just love the car in it.
All the way through that film, I was like, my [ __ ] was like coming out because I was like, if anything happens to that my car, I'm going to cry. So, that's all I can say about that. Um, next up we have The Blair Witch Project, and I love The Blair Witch Project. If you don't like this film, you're gay.
I'm sorry, but you are.
This film is like it's probably the best found footage film ever made. It's up there anyway.
Um, the premise of this film is three documentary filmmakers, who are students, go into the >> [music] >> Maryland woods to investigate a legend called the Blair Witch, and [music] basically they get lost, and this is the footage they shot, >> [music] >> and it is very good. It's one of them films where it doesn't show a lot. It kind of lets your imagination play.
You know, >> [music] >> play out, and I really like how this beanie in here because it's so iconic.
It's on all the posters. It's just kind of like >> [music] >> it's fixated in like the '90s pop culture, like early '90s, early 2000s, [music] no, not early '90s, like early 2000 kind of pop culture. It's just like a symbol of that era, and I think I have to include it because of that.
Um, [music] other than that, the whole vibe of the film is just incredible. It's one of the ones where you have to watch around Halloween. You have to like fully immerse yourself. You can't [music] just kind of like put it on, and like go on your phone. You have to actually sit there and kind of like turn the lights off and just [music] fully just go in with it. Like, it's just like chef's kiss of how to make a film [music] that is so atmospheric, and just oh, so good. Oh my god, I'm going to have to watch all these films today because if when I talk about horror films, I get so inspired [music] to just want to watch them. Next, we are talking about This is >> [music] >> literally up there in my top five favorite horror films, which I get asked all the time, but this is >> [music] >> genuinely in my top five. It never moves. This is Black Christmas from 1974.
A Christmas horror movie, yes. Who would have thought it? This is [music] how you make a Christmas horror film.
You don't like it's Christmas, but it's not about Christmas. So, this um the premise of this film is [music] it's kind of set in a sorority house over like it's at that period where everyone's kind of going home for Christmas. [music] They're going in and out and it's just very chaotic. So, it's set around that time.
>> [music] >> And it's basically just about a man that breaks into the house and starts picking off the girls one by one. It is >> [music] >> amazing. I watch this every year without fail around Christmas. So, next up we have Jess Bradford's card Jess Bradford's sweater [music] in Black Christmas.
So, >> [clears throat] >> it's it's really hard to kind of see what's on the jumper because I can't get a good like image of it. So, it looks I've >> [music] >> When I watched this as a kid, I always thought it was a turkey, but it's not.
It's someone's hands like this.
And it makes like a sort of arrowhead kind of picture, I guess.
But I've always like in my head this has always stuck out as like a Christmas sweater, even though it doesn't look Christmasy at all, but I think because [music] it's just so ingrained in the film and it's was like on the posters and all that, that [music] I'm just like it's iconic. Like This is again is one of them horror films that it isn't kind of like a a gory quick slasher. It's a lot like Halloween, [music] which was Halloween did take a lot of inspiration from this film, where it's very like slow and methodical. It's like POV shots of the killer. It's not kind of fast like killer kind of vibes. It's just a very slow build-up and >> [music] >> it's such like a There's so many plot lines in this film and they all kind of come together at the end and it's just It's just amazing, this film. If you want to ever want to watch a Christmas horror film, this is the one cuz it [music] feels inherently without being about Christmas.
So, next we have The Wicker Man, which is a another one of my all-time favorite films purely for vibes alone.
So, if you are a lover of all things folk [music] like folk culty witchy vibes, please check out this film.
You'll love it. So, the premise of this film is a police officer is [music] investigating a case of a little girl that's been missing for a few months and is invited to this island called [music] Summerisle to kind of investigate. And he is very kind of like traditional all like godly man, Christian and he goes to this island where they're very kind of like free and they're very like pagan and they have all these like celebrations and vibes and [ __ ] and he basically tries to like investigate where this little girl has gone and it is >> [music] >> It is very strange. It's a very strange film and it's very kind of folk horror. So, yeah, >> [clears throat] >> that's basically the basic premise of this and the [music] kind of knitwear I want to talk about is Christopher Lee's character, Lord Summerisle. He wears this kind of [music] Near the end of the film, he wears this kind of um like a bright orange kind of sweater [music] and it's like a turtleneck and it's just amazing.
Again, I I really see what kind of construction it is. It's probably just a simple jumper but I'm linking it because it's a great film and just pure vibes alone.
And what else can I say?
I think cuz the whole cuz I think the film is set on like a Scottish island.
So, the the jumper itself it just kind of give you that um idea [music] of like windy folk Celtic vibes like druids and all [music] that.
So, yeah.
I don't know what else to say about it but if you [music] it's an amazing film. It's It's cracking. So, some of these films that I've picked they they have very very very small amounts of knitwear in it because I was just looking at my favorite films and I was like, "What can I talk about for ages?" Um So, I love Stephen King. I think he's one of my favorite authors ever and [music] one of my favorite adaptations ever is Stephen King's It. So, this is from 1990. This is a TV mini-series.
Mainly the children's version. So, Stephen King's It is >> [music] >> the plot is that it's set in a town called Derry which is in Maine and this [music] kind of monster lives there and it kills children and eats them and kind of turns into their like worst fears. And the book is set in the 50s and I think [music] in the TV show it's also set in the 50s but I know in the remake they moved the time up to the 80s. But in this film in the 50s there's so many amazing fashion in this in this kind of show and I really like um there's a character called Eddie who wears this kind of sweater vest and it looks like very fair isle and it's kind of like reds cream not [music] reds. Yeah, reds and creams and he cuz he wears like this like flannel shirt over it as well. It just kind of blends into [music] the the shirt and it's just I just think it's [ __ ] stunning.
Like my I want it. That's what I want my fashion to be like. I want to look like a lesbian cuz he looks like a lesbian.
Whatever.
But even all the kids that are all wearing like flannel shirts, all wearing dungarees and like [music] knitwear and I'm just like I want to be I don't want to be there cuz it's the 50s and it's really racist [music] and homophobic, but still, it looks cool.
And I love this film. I used to be terrified of clowns to the point where like my mom used to watch this and I used to literally scream and cry cuz the clown used to terrify me.
Okay, this one is I was kind of gagged that I realized this. [music] So, this was the film that kind of inspired this kind of video because uh I was thinking of Friday 13th, which is an incredibly long series >> [music] >> and so, this film is Jason X from 2001, which everybody hates, but I love.
>> [music] >> So, I'll tell you so, Jason X is part of the Friday 13th series. So, the original film came out in 1980 [music] and is set around a camp called Camp Crystal Lake and yeah, these every film is pretty much the same. Um [music] these camp counselors come to the camp, they do a load of [ __ ] and Jason comes back and kills them. That is kind of the franchise [music] in a whole, but this is set in space.
Yeah, I [ __ ] you not. This is set in space and the reason I want to talk about this is because for some reason, most of the characters are wearing knitwear in space and it really confuses me. But it's iconic. I love it. So, there's a character here who has probably one of the most iconic deaths in Friday 13th history >> [music] >> and I'm not going to spoil it how she dies or anything like that, but it's a Friday 13th movie. So, come on, you know everyone's going to die. But, she wears this kind of it's kind of like a vest, but it's not a vest. It goes around her neck like kind of like a necklace and goes down under her arms and it's just like ribbing and she also wears like something under as well and it's so [ __ ] gorgeous and I'm like how how is that kind of functional to wear in space because I thought the whole point of like wearing [ __ ] in space is that like doesn't like knitwear not knitwear itself, but wool it causes friction which can cause fires. I don't know.
But, for some reason every character in this like film is wearing some sort of knitwear. You have a character who's wearing a blue [music] kind of vest that has like a textured rib kind of stripy rib things at the bottom. You have the main character like the final girl in it. She's wearing like a >> [music] >> a cut-off tank top crop top moment. It's just kind of iconic how they're all just running around in space wearing knitwear.
Like, I feel like that needs to be a video in itself.
Um [music] but yeah, that's Jason X and this one's set in space because Jason gets cryogenically frozen and somehow ends up [music] in space and she gets real.
It is such a bad movie, but it's kind of of that period where >> [music] >> there was loads of space shows in America like um um Battlestar Galactica um Star [music] Trek something something. Like mid-2000s TV shows about in space. Like, it was it's very that vibe.
>> [snorts] >> And [music] having Jason in it is kind of a genius play because it's just like really really fun.
It's >> [music] >> camp. it's fun, it's just like evil gets an upgrade. So, I really recommend you don't even need to have seen any of the Friday 13th films. Just go watch this one. It's so fun.
So, [music] this is two different films, but they're from the same franchise technically.
>> [music] >> So, first of all, we're going to talk about Sally from The Texas Massacre, 1974.
This is my favorite film I've made ever, one.
And she is such an icon. [music] I love her. And she's wearing a crop top that's clearly knitted. It's like a one by one rib knitted crop top, not crop top.
Like vest with like white flowers in the middle [music] of the Texas heat.
And that's the that's it.
And she just survives.
And I love that for her.
But this film is basically [music] set in Texas in the 1970s, where a group of teenagers kind of get lost. Well, they don't get lost. They run out of fuel and they are at a gas station.
And basically just get picked off by this family of cannibals.
It's [music] an amazing film.
Cinematography, ah, ah, chef's kiss.
Everything about this film is chef's kiss. It just makes you feel sweaty. It makes you feel [music] like itchy and gross and just like and I think every every person should watch this because this is how you make a horror film.
>> [music] >> And again, it's not as gory as people think it is. People think it's like blood guts and gore and everything, but it's really not. It's like hardly any blood in this film.
And they do this because they just want you to feel it through the screen. They don't want to show you the blood. They want you you should think about the blood.
And [music] she is just amazing in it. And I love it how in the first scene she gets out of the car and you see her tits. [music] You see her like nipples through the jumper and just no one cares. And I love that for her.
And the second one I'm going to talk about is I don't necessarily think this is knitted, >> [music] >> but I'm going to talk about anyway because she is she holds a very special place in my heart. So, this is the remake [music] of that film, Texas Massacre 1974. This is 2003's The Texas Massacre.
And it's got Jessica Alba in it, and she is the final girl.
And the way she is dressed in this whole in this movie >> [music] >> is for the gays. And you'll you'll see why because in the film she is dressed You know how [music] people are like the iPhone phase where they put like a modern girl into like a period piece and she just looks She looks too modern to be in the [music] film even though she's wearing period dress. This is Jessica Alba in 2003 Texas Massacre [music] cuz she just looks so 2003. They've literally just put her in like a white tank top and it's cropped and it's like tied up so her belly's showing with like low-cut off pan [music] like jeans.
And that She's like go be final girl. And she looks so 2003, but she looks so iconic. I love it. Like I grew up Like as a gay man, I was so gay for her in this film. I was [music] Oh my god.
I'm going to have to watch this film after this because I was like not Jessica Alba like running away from Leatherface in [music] like [ __ ] you know.
>> [gasps] >> Oh my god, it's so 2000s. I love it. And they're like, "Yeah, this is set in the '70s."
No, it's not. This is 2003. And when I was a kid and I used to go on like days day day trips with my family, um [music] I used to like you know, run around the fields and [ __ ] and I used to pretend I was her.
That's how gay I am. I was like I'm her. [music] I want to be her.
She's It's just amazing.
See, this video [music] is so terrible because I've I've hardly talked about knitwear. I've just talked about my favorite movies, but whatever.
>> [music] >> It is what it is. She's amazing.
Okay, this next this next one is actually knit.
So, next we're talking about Scream and most importantly Drew Barrymore's um iconic sweater in Scream. So, this is literally >> [music] >> a it looks like a 3 by 2 [music] rib.
So, three knit stitch, two purl stitch sweater.
And what I love about it is like with the the sleeves are kind of flared at the bottom.
Uh there's no ribbing. It's just flared.
And even with the kind of the kind of neck, it's not like a full around neck. It kind of like >> [music] >> I don't know. It looks weird, but I love it.
And this is like a staple of the Scream movie like franchise [music] because it's so recognizable. Like if you just got a bob and this, you'd be like Drew Barrymore's Scream.
>> [music] >> That's how iconic it is.
And if you don't know what Scream is, it is basically about a I don't really It's basically about a a like a killer that's on the loose who wears a Ghostface mask.
And [music] he basically targets this group of friends.
That's all I can really say without giving away too much. Okay, this one is actually [music] knit knit history right now because we're going to talk about Halloween. Halloween 1978 by [music] John Carpenter.
John Carpenter made this film and literally changed [music] horror movie history forever.
Even though he did get lots of like inspiration from Black Christmas, I'm not going to hold that against him. This film is iconic.
>> [music] >> And this film is basically about a mental patient called Michael Myers who escapes [music] from the mental hospital and goes on a killing [music] spree around Haddonfield during Halloween.
And he targets a babysitter called Laurie Strode.
That's basically just the film.
>> [music] >> And what I want to talk about in the film is so Laurie in there's a scene in the film where Laurie and her two [music] friends are walking to school or walking from home. I can't really remember.
And she's wearing this kind of grandma cardigan and her friend [music] is wearing a orange um kind of vest kind of situation thing over shirt and [music] they both look so iconic because this is apparently this is apparently set in October but everything's like lush green cuz they said [music] it cuz they actually filmed it in August.
But they just kind of blend in the surroundings and it's [music] I love it.
And the main point is I know for a fact she knitted that for her friend and knitted this for herself because [music] in the movie when she gets to her actual babysitting gig, she [music] has knitting needles in a bag, okay? Stay with me here.
And she uses one of them [music] to stab Michael Myers in the neck.
Knitting saves lives, people. This is why I always have knitting needles on me. Fun fact, [music] when I went on a um a grinder um date, let's say, um >> [music] >> I didn't know who this person was obviously and I had knitting needles in my bag and I just said to him as he was getting in the car, I said, "If you try anything, I have knitting needles."
>> [music] >> So, Laurie Strode inspiring a whole generation of gay boys.
Okay, this is going to be the last horror movie um >> [music] >> that I'm going to talk about because I'm getting tired and bored. So, this is The Shining.
1980, this film came out based on [music] the book by Stephen King.
And it is about a caretaker and his family who move into the Overlook Hotel for the winter to kind of look after the the hotel.
Little do they know it's haunted and there's loads of people that are dead and they're trying like mess with them.
And there's two iconic sweaters in this.
There's Jack's sweater where he's kind of losing his mind and it's kind of a a green [music] From the images, it looks like a raglan because it has like three raglan lines around here and it's also a turtleneck.
But it's also kind of like it looks like a half fisherman's rib or either maybe a two by two rib. I'm not sure, but it looks cozy.
>> [snorts] >> And then obviously you have little Danny, >> [music] >> that's his name.
You have Danny's jumper as well, which is Apollo 11 and it's kind of just It's It's literally you can tell this is like purely hand [music] knit because it's like a simple raglan and it's got like It's like an intarsia vibe one.
I think it's probably knit flat to be fair because I can't really see the raglan lines.
Well, fun fact, people believe that this jumper is a hint that Stanley [music] Kubrick, who directed the film, actually filmed the moon landings, which I think is a stretch, but interesting fact that for [music] you.
This is again very good horror film.
It's very fun. It's very spooky. It's a classic up there, so [music] if you want any suggestions for horror movies, literally watch everything on this list because this will get you into horror movies because [music] Thank you for watching that very strange video.
Um Honestly, I don't know. I >> [music] >> I'm literally look I'm thinking now and I'm like this is going to be a really annoying to edit because [music] all I've not All I've done is just talk about horror movies for like 30 minutes. People are going to be like, "What the fuck?"
But anyway, I hope you enjoyed that. If you did, let me know in the comments. If you made it to the end of this video, >> [music] >> please comment a yarn ball or something.
