Electrochemical sensors offer a promising platform for improving animal welfare in aquaculture by enabling real-time, continuous, and non-invasive monitoring of biological and environmental conditions. These sensors can detect various biomarkers such as cortisol (stress indicator), cytokines (immune function), and hydrogen peroxide (environmental quality) from samples like water, mucus, or interstitial fluid without requiring invasive blood collection. The technology allows for flexible sensor designs that can be printed onto wearable patches or floating devices, enabling continuous monitoring over extended periods (up to 30 days) while minimizing stress on animals and reducing reliance on veterinary drugs.
