The speaker provides a sharp critique of identity gatekeeping, arguing that policing personal relationships through a racial lens mirrors the same colonial logic used to dismantle marginalized communities. It is a vital reminder that true liberation must include the agency to love freely, rather than adhering to arbitrary standards of performative loyalty.

>> So, real quick, you are not pro-black unless you you as a black person look to your left and look to your right and your spouse is black.
>> So, the amount of time that's passed between now and the release of Every Breath You Take by The Police is the same amount of time that passed between the birth of my grandmother and the inclusion of the phrase till death or distance do you part in the wedding vows of black couples. That phrase was included because just about every slave was sold at least once in their lifetime and that would be the end of their marriages. And the tenuous security of black marriages didn't end with slavery.
It persisted for several more decades. I say that to say that black love and specifically black marriages having the same security and a relatively equal footing as white folks is relatively novel. This is why for those of you who may not know or simply may not care, there's such a ferociousness in the black community about the sacredness of black couples. That, combined with the unfortunate reality that far too many black men attach themselves to non-black women as a repudiation of black women leads certain people like this gentleman to draw the line of pro-blackness at who your spouse is. The problem with that line of thinking is that there are lots of reasonable places where that line could be drawn and everybody could decide to draw that line at their own feet, which is where the people who draw that line always do. For example, I mean, I could I I >> could selfishly decide that you can't be pro-black if all of your words and therefore all of your thoughts are in the language of the invader or >> What is this?
>> Do you just really like the lower case t or have you adopted the religion of your enslaver?
>> Of course I don't say any of this because I actually believe it. I say it to illustrate just how absurd it is. Our ancestors who have fought and bled and died for our liberation fought for a liberation where we could worship how we want and speak how we want and love whom we want. Freedom does not come with cages, [clears throat] especially not those we build for ourselves.
