Sadness is a temporary emotion that lasts for a short period (days to weeks), while depression is a prolonged condition characterized by persistent low mood, loss of interest, sleep disturbances, and social withdrawal that continues for weeks, months, or years; recognizing this distinction is crucial because depression requires professional attention and support, whereas normal sadness is a natural emotional response that eventually resolves on its own.

SADNESS VS DEPRESSION - Let's Understand Emotions BetterAdded:
Hello future C's. Today we're going to talk about something that many people experience but don't talk about it.
Yes, over the years so many students have messaged me saying, "Sir, I'm feeling low for various reasons. How do I deal with this?"
And one of the biggest misconception people have is they confuse between sadness and depression. And today we're going to decode emotions.
Let me give you a few examples for you to understand this better.
I'm sure everybody watching this video would have at some time cleared your 12th board exams, correct?
How happy were you when you passed your 12th board exams?
But how long did that happiness stay?
Maybe that day, maybe the next few days, or maximum two to three weeks. Were you happy for the entire year because you cleared 12th boards? No. It's for a a moment in time.
Let me proceed to the next example.
When India lost the World Cup final in 2023 to Australia, most cricket fans were heartbroken. We were all sad.
Or for the Dhoni run out back then in semi-finals with New Zealand, we were all disturbed and hurt. For how long?
That day, that week, or a few months.
Then we get back to our routine day-to-day life, correct? But whenever you think of that moment, for a few seconds you will feel, "Aiyo, why did this happen?" And you will get back to your work, correct?
That means you are not sad because India lost for 24/7 365 days. No. It's again for a moment in time.
The same way the day when you clear your CA final exams, the day you become a chartered accountant, visualize that day, how happy you will be.
But that happiness will be for a few days or a few weeks or few months.
You cannot be happy for the rest of your life, correct? That means every emotion that we experience as humans, I'm just listing down a few over here.
Happiness or anger or love or excitement, hope, fear, loneliness and much more. All these emotions are those things that stays with you for a short period of time, a few weeks or few months. You You are never angry for 365 days in a year, correct? Anger may be for a few days. Same way, happiness will be for a few days, not forever. Sir, what are you trying to say?
Let me show you a graph. Let me show you a graph where the x-axis, if I keep it as our age, our lifetime from zero to 100, and y-axis as your emotions, what actually happens is every emotion that you experience keeps going up and keeps going down at different points of time.
Correct? For example, something that most people can relate with, on your birthday, you feel very happy, you feel excited because you feel you're a special person that day, right?
But you don't feel that like that on other days when it's not your birthday.
Now, sir, why are you saying this? Same way, same way, sadness or feeling low is an emotion that you feel at a point of time and it will go away slowly. But but but if you are feeling low and sad for an extended period of time, for a prolonged period of time, for example, for weeks, for months, for years together if you are feeling low and sad, you're waking up low, you're waking up clueless, that is when sadness becomes depression. Are you getting it, guys?
I'm again repeating it.
Most people or most students are generally low or sad for a particular short period of time. But if they are not able to overcome that and if that stays for a very long time, that is when you have to actually call it depression. You cannot simply keep telling, "Sir, I am depressed today. I'm depressed yesterday, depressed tomorrow." No. It's not a very small word to use like that.
Let me give you a few basic symptoms or signs of a person who may be may be depressed. This is not an exhaustive list. This is just few very very basic symptoms. Of course, there are professionals, psychologists who know better about this. But me, coming from a mental health company, just sharing a few basic symptoms. For example, No, these are symptoms that even I have gone through in my life, guys. I have gone through multiple of these symptoms at different points of time and I have come out of it as well.
We just have to work towards it. I'm also going to tell you how we can work towards it.
Sometimes, not feeling hungry. Even if you don't eat for the whole day, you are supposed to feel hungry, but you don't feel hungry. You don't have interest in food. Not getting sleep. 1 2 days, fine.
But for weeks or months together I'm not getting sleep, sir. Not sleeping properly. Loss of interest in life, loss of interest in day-to-day activities.
You just feel like, "Why am I even there?" Those kind of loss of interest thoughts. Difficult to concentrate on anything. I'm not talking only about studies. Difficult to concentrate when you watch a movie, difficult to concentrate when you eat food. You just feel very numb most of the time.
Withdrawing from social life, not meeting your friends. Suddenly you will see that a friend that you know for so long has not come and is not coming for some time, not replying to text. That means that person is withdrawing themself from social life. I'm not talking about social media, withdrawing from social life itself, isolating themselves. Sometimes people also resort to substances, drug use, alcohol use.
Why do they do that? To deal with this emotion that temporarily gives you a relief, they resort to that. Now, it is not all these symptoms. It could be a combination of this that could lead to depression or it's a sign of depression. Sir, now how do I deal with this? What can help?
Like Like how they keep saying, "Nothing can change overnight."
If you have built a huge building for over two to three years, a 30-40 floor apartment or you've built an empire, it cannot collapse over a week or in in a day. It takes time. So, same way, when you're going through something, it takes time to come out of it. So, the best best medicine for it is always time.
They say, "Time heals." But you cannot just leave it to time. The first thing is to open up. If you're going through something, guys, open up to people you trust. You can talk to me, talk to your friends, talk to your parents. There will be somebody around you to whom you can open up. And those people who are listening, if your friend is opening up to you, please listen to them. Don't write off by saying, "Hey, this and all everybody will go through that. Come on, we can deal with this in life." No.
Listen to them because at that point they need someone to listen. Support groups. There are so many support groups where random people will help you out.
For CA students, we have a free support group for CA students. And in that we talk only about mental health. That link I will give in the description, guys.
That group is already full, but I've created secondary groups you can join.
It's a safe space for CA students and professional students. What are other things that can help you?
Good food. Eat the right food at the right time. Junk food in a way affects you, but eat right food for longer period. Check on your vitamins, your vitamin A, B, C, D. I mean, there are so many vitamins, guys. Nowadays, Indians have always low vitamin D because most of us are roaming in AC vehicles or AC halls. We are not exposing ourselves to the sun. So, check on your vitamins. A basic blood test will reveal that. Don't do it just for this. If you feel there's a need, a doctor is suggesting means you do that.
Physical activity will always help you.
Workout, not necessarily gym, going and playing cricket, badminton, using the stairs, just being physically active, and sweating out all the toxins will come out, will make you feel much more better. And if nothing works, at least walk for 30 to 40 minutes. Beyond this, there are so many ways you can deal with this. I have a put question mark here to know from you your side in the comments.
Let me know in the comments of this video, what do you guys do to feel better? Maybe listening to movies, listen Sorry, listening to songs or watching movies. Whatever you guys do. I mean, those points may help somebody else watching this video. So, finally, I would like to say if you're a student and if you know somebody around you maybe going through this, what should you do as a responsible human being? The first thing is check on others. If you feel somebody in your social circle or your friends is behaving a little differently lately, it's okay to go ask him, "Hey, is everything okay? If you need something, I'm here." So, just check on your friends if you feel they need that help. The next one is be kind to people around you, especially friends or like students you see in class.
Small jokes here and there is fine.
Small banter here and there is fine.
But, try to be kind to most people that you interact with because you never know what the other person is going through on that particular day when you say something to that person because it can have long-lasting impact.
So, be kind.
And lastly, for you as individually, don't assume everything in your head. Hey, what that person is saying about me? Because a lot of this assumptions and overthinking that you do over a long period of time will lead to insecurity among yourself.
Generally, whenever you have a doubt on something with some person, if you have that confidence, go ask them openly, maybe in person or in text. For example, if you have a friend and if you feel your friend is talking on your back, which is affecting you, after all, he's your friend, no? Go ask him, "Hey, all these things happen. Why is this happening? I mean, I don't want this to affect our relationship." Based on the response, you can see what to do.
Instead of you assuming by yourself, which could be it could be a grapevine in your head. It can lead to so many over assumptions and over thinking that you should avoid. So, these are few things and lastly I will say end of the day guys, as humans we are meant to experience every emotion. So, some days will be great, some days will not be great. Try to embrace and accept every emotion and life will be much better because end of the day your world is your mind. That's about it guys. Thank you. See you on another day.
Tata. Bye-bye.
