Compensating for Extra WorkAñadido:
Hey, how's it going? Welcome back to the channel and to another good-looking puzzle. Now, this again is Oh, I've done a couple of these recently actually. Uh it's just a singular rule puzzle. So, killer cages. I think the last one we had a singular rule also might have been killer cages. We I think we've had a thermo one and a killer cage one recently. It was just those rule sets. So, this one looked like it was going to be fun. So, I'm going to give it a good look and see what's going on. So, it's called comp time off. I'm not sure what that has to do with the puzzle. Don't know. Uh maybe uh somebody has some inside info or anything like that, but whatever.
It's by Chef of Death. So, let's just take a look at these rules see what's going on. Cuz there's normal Sudoku, so every row, column, and 3 by 3 box will contain the digits 1 through 9 once each.
Then, we have the killer cages. So, digits in a cage do not repeat and sum to the indicated total if given. So, you'll see there are a couple of Yeah, two of them here of regions where there is no value given in the cage.
So, I'm assuming that is those are placed the way they are placed to restrict a repetitious digit to allow this to either be solvable or be uniquely solvable. So, that's the only rule right there. The killer cages. So, with that said, let's just dive into this one see if we can get it figured out. Link's going to be in that description. Let's have some fun.
All right. So, the first thing I kind of noticed was these 14 cages. These are going to be two different versions of the 14 cuz you can only do you can only make 14 in two digits two ways. Uh either 9 5 or 8 6. I don't know if that helps us in any way though.
Uh similar situation here. Now, these two might be a little more useful because there's going to maybe be some other restrictions.
And I don't know if we can correlate these back to each other.
Cuz like I said, we know this one let's just color it real quick as a an option.
This version of 14 and this version of 14 are going to be different.
But I don't think we can say that this 14 is necessarily different than this or how it works. So, let's just think about these two in their glory as to what they can be.
Yeah, okay. So, the eight is being restricted by these. So, if you know you two have to be two different versions of 14, we know that this eight cage is being seen by every single one of those digits. So, we can't put a six or a five in this eight. So, it has to be the 1 7.
Cuz the only ways you can make eight are uh 7 1 6 2 and 5 3. 6 2 and 5 3 are out of here.
Now, the 10, does that really tell us too much about? I mean, it removes the 1 9 and 7 3 as an option for the 10. I guess it pushes in a 2 8 or a 6 4.
Um does that tell me anything?
I guess it means that this nine Okay, so there is a restriction on this nine cage then.
>> [snorts] >> Cuz we know this is either 2 4 or uh sorry, 2 8 or 6 4, we [snorts] can't remove both the two and the four obviously. So, this nine cage is the only has three ways to go.
Either it's 2 3 4 where we're not using a one, which we just said is not going to work, or there is a one and the ones are 1 2 6 or 1 3 5.
Well, the 2 3 4 doesn't work here and guess what the 1 2 6 is not going to work either because if we remove two and the six from here, we got four and eight left. Those don't add to 10. You are a 1 3 5.
Now, does that actually tell me anything?
Uh I guess it tells us that there's a one in one of these.
Uh and it can't be you cuz then this would be a seven to make that. That goes away.
Is there a restriction with this eight now? Again, I cuz this eight isn't seen by both of these.
>> [snorts] >> So, it doesn't have the same restriction that this one does, but now if this one can't be a 1 7.
Okay. Let's think about this 14 and this 14. Same concept as this eight here, but looking at it from a different different version.
This eight sees both of these.
So, what would happen if these were two different versions of our 14?
Well, the eight would be broken period because this 1 7 is also staring it down. So, if I were to put a 9 5 here and 8 6 here, this is a 1 7. There's absolutely nothing we can put into the eight. So, these have to be the same.
>> [snorts] >> So, they will be blue, you will be yellow.
So, >> [snorts] >> what does that mean though?
Cuz it what it says is that the eight is it's not a 1 7. It's either the 6 2 or the 5 3, but I don't know if we can say which one that is cuz we don't know what blue and yellow are just yet.
>> [clears throat] >> Uh what else can we Oh, we can we can determine what the eight is and what the blue and the yellow are.
This is a 1 3 5 looking into this region. Where does the three go in this region? Has to go here. So, now let's go back up here. Where does the three go?
It's got to go right there. So, this is a 3 5. So, you are not the 9 5s.
You will be the 6 8s. You will be the 9 5s. You will be the 9 5 and the five will tell us this is 9 and 5. Okay.
I think I'm going to get rid of this coloring cuz I don't really like putting coloring in if I don't need it because I think it just gets in my way visually.
Personal preference. I know a lot of you out there love to color.
>> [snorts] >> Just doesn't suit my eye as well. So, I'm not going to do it right now. Cuz I don't think that's going to correlate back to like there's another 14 here, but nothing's really looking at it. So, I don't think it's all that useful. Any who, 2 4 and 9 left over in that column, which means these have to be 6 7s and 8s.
Does that tell us anything?
Um It tells me a little bit of something I guess.
Cuz where do the 6 7s and 8s or where the 6 7 Yeah, just 6 and 8s. We know where know where the seven goes. Where do the 6 and 8s go?
In this region. They have to be both of them in these three cells. Only one of them can go here. So, the other one has to be here. So, whatever version of 10 this is, the other portion of it is here.
>> [snorts] >> Or the other opposite portion of the high digits over here and then this will be whatever is left over from the low.
So, this will either be like a 2 3 or a 2 4. Don't know if that's going to tell me anything or not.
Um This [clears throat and snorts] nine clue is a little bit restricted, but not a not as much I think as this one is.
Cuz this could still be or still have a one on it or it could be the 2 3 4 still.
Cuz it could still be 2 3 4. This would be the 6 8. This would be a two or a four. It could also be the 1 2 6 still.
It can't be the 1 3 5 version, but that's not enough of a restriction.
Um okay. So, can we maybe get into some of these 17s, 14s? I think the four Now, the 14 doesn't need to have a one, does it?
Uh-oh. Hello.
We've got fives and nines staring down the barrel of this region.
The 17 has fives and nines in it. So, if it has fives and nines in it, that's 14.
It needs three. It's it's 1 2 or 1 5 and 14 need three left. Yeah, 1 2 5 and 9.
Okay.
That's good cuz Okay, perfect. We're going to go right back to that nine we were thinking about cuz now we know there's a one in here. We have an X-wing of one staring this down. So, this has to be that 1 2 6 cuz we already ruled out the 1 3 5, which means you're not two or six, which means you're not four or eight.
These will have threes and sevens in them, but I don't know if that helps me any.
Um Let's think about the 14. Maybe there's another concept of X-wing here.
Like Okay, we can't ever put a nine in this 14 cage cuz you have three digits left over that have to add to five.
Ain't going to happen. So, if those are not nines in this five nine staring down this barrel, one of you is the nine.
That will look at this 14 and say this is a 6 8. So, that's good. That'll give us a seven over here.
Again, these might just be ancillary little bits of info, but they're info.
We take the info.
Now, what more does any of that say? Is there Let's think about what the options of the 14 could be.
>> [snorts] >> Now, so I guess at the end of day, it either it either has a one or a two in it, right?
Cuz it could be, you know, like a 1 2 4 6, you know, 1 2 3 7 or 3 8, excuse me.
1 2 4 7. Those types of things. Or [snorts] it just doesn't have the one and it's a two, three, four, five.
>> [snorts] >> Now, if it has the one, we've got an X-Wing looking up here. So, this would be a one. If it doesn't have the one, we have a two.
And we have an X-Wing of twos looking up here. So, this has to either be a one or a two. Again, I don't know how massively useful or sixes.
I was going to say we can we push a six or an eight into the 14? Well, we can't put sixes here, but I was like that's not enough information. But, going back down here, none of these can be sixes if one of these is.
Now, we have these two staring at the box. So, there is a six in this 14.
If there's a six in the 14, we can't do the two, three, four, five. So, there has to be a one.
There has to be a six so that we were getting to that one X-Wing. So, you are our one.
Now, what's left over cuz this is seven.
So, we need seven more in two digits.
It's either going to be two, five or three, four.
It can't be two, five. We go back to the thought process of our X-Wing. We were talking about a singular one or a singular two creating an X-Wing to go with this. What if we put both the one and the two here? Well, we're just breaking this puzzle cuz we couldn't put one or two here. So, there's no two here either. Which means it has to be the one, six, three, four.
Okay.
Now, that seven is also saying there's a seven over here. That's going to look down here and say there's a seven over here.
The eight here is looking in Oh, this is a seven, eight pair.
And that's going to tell us this is a seven, eight pair. And if that's a seven, eight, this is a four, which means you are the six, you are the eight. Now, we can start inputting all this other information.
Two, three.
You will be one, four. You will be two, seven and nine.
We can also probably just fill out the rest of these.
Yeah, where does the five go in this? If this has to be a five, nine pair, so you have to be the two. Again, we're kind of running back and forth between a bunch of these X-Wings and other types of things. That two will say you are the four, so you're not.
Now, the five, nine says you're not a five. So, I guess the remaining two digits in this row are one and three. I don't think that's enough information just yet.
What are these three digits? Well, what are you? You're just a given. Three.
And then you will be a six and a four.
And we can push the six.
And then the four.
Okay.
Uh I guess we can just write these in.
We might as well cuz they're just givens. So, two, three, four and seven.
And where did my mouse go?
It just disappeared on me. That's always fun.
Uh so, we do actually get an X-Wing on fours, which pushes one of these to be a four.
And I guess there also has to be a Oh, not three I didn't see the three there. I was going to say there also has to be a something else here, but I don't think there is. Is this 12 being restricted anyway cuz now it can't be a four, eight.
So, it's either going to be a nine, three or a seven, five.
If it's a nine, three, we get an X-Wing of nines and this becomes a nine.
If it's a seven, five, we have an X-Wing of sevens and this will be the So, this can't be a two.
Okay.
So, we're pulling twos cuz there is a two up here, there is a two up here. Again, we're X-Wing-ifying this thing.
There is a two up here.
Where does the two go in this region?
It's here. We can't repeat the two in the region. You're not a two. You are.
So, now this region does have a four in it. And we think Well, we don't know what these are. These could be fours, sevens or nines at this stage.
That two though does say you're not a two.
The three and the four down here, do they tell us much?
Well, it pushes a four up here.
We know those two can't be a three, but any of those could be at this stage, I believe.
Sixes and eights, okay. All right. So, we've we've made a lot of progress here.
We need to keep on keeping on. Is there something about this 16? I haven't even looked at it yet.
Yeah, you can't be a two.
Cuz what happened if you put a two here?
Well, you can either add it to a one or a four. Well, that'd be either a three or a six. This would have to be either a 10 or a 13. Ain't going to happen.
So, you are our two, which means you're not. One of those will be I'll put it in.
For the old poops and giggles machine.
Now, does that further limit this?
If we put a seven, you would be a one. That's eight. This would have to be an eight.
The seven with the four would say this could be a five.
I think all of that is fine on this axis.
If it's a nine, it's a one with the six.
That doesn't seem to break anything. A nine with the four leaves it Well, that doesn't.
Well, it'd be a three. I can't do math.
Nine, four, three also doesn't cause any problems. So, that's a no-go.
Again, I don't think this 14 tells us much. What about these fours in this?
Cuz one of these has to be a four.
We also know one of these has to be a two because of the the two release there.
Twos and fours, huh?
Does that tell me anything?
Four, six. I don't think we can limit both a two and a four to this, can we?
Cuz that would be a six.
Plus, we could put a three here and then a five here.
So, there is possibility of that working. Or six with the one and put a seven here. Both would seem to work.
Okay.
What else we got then?
Two, three, seven. Am I missing something here?
Probably. It's usually the way it works.
Get rid of some of these markings that I don't need to have there again. They just get in my eye line.
Fours, threes.
Is there anything in here the Oh, one of these is an eight.
>> [snorts] >> Yeah, it'd be nice to say if this could be an eight or not because that would start to tell us what this is, but we can't at the moment, I don't believe.
One, two, three, four, five, six, seven.
So, there's only two digits not being put on to this.
One of them's a six.
Cuz none of these can be sixes.
Although, I don't know what the other one is.
Now, if this was a seven, the other digit lost would be the eight. But, because this could still be an eight right now, we can't necessarily do that.
Um again, you are four, sevens and nines.
Does Oh, that gives an X-Wing on fours.
I didn't even notice.
We've been doing X-Wings this entire time and I forgot to look at those.
These can't be fours. You are.
Does that help for?
Again, don't know.
Uh what else do we have?
Threes, fives.
I don't think we have any more X-Wings that we can look through.
Is there any basic Sudoku maybe I'm missing?
Like none of those can be a one.
You can't be a one cuz that would force that to be a four and have five totally.
I also can't do it, but I think any of those three could still be.
The twos we've pushed into here.
We've pushed down to here. We have the X-Wing that doesn't help us. Got an X-Wing going from this side that doesn't help us. X-Wings, X-Wings.
What else?
Kind of hit a little bit of a jam here, haven't we?
Four. Can we do anything with them?
Don't think so.
Fives, we only have a couple of them.
Sixes.
No. Sevens, no. Eights, not really. And nines, not really, I don't think. Okay.
There's something else in here. What is it? Where am I?
The only thing that I can think of are the the cages reducing what can go into them. And then there's 14, which just doesn't feel like it has enough information to tell me anything about it yet.
Six.
Uh or do we Maybe I just needed to go in and look at what this uh variable here was and just put it in there and see what's what. Let's do that again.
Seven with the one gets the eight. This would be an eight.
Seven with the four would be 11. This would be a five. Nine with the one would be 10. This would be the six. And nine with the four we said would leave a three.
Three, four, five, six, seven. No. There we said there's ones and And we can't push anything else into these regions.
Is there something more about what this option could be?
I don't think so.
Um what am I missing?
That good question.
You If you are an eight, you are an eight.
Which would mean you would be an eight.
I don't think there's any problems with that. That forces you to be eight.
One of those and one of those. If you're the eight, it still doesn't tell us which one of these is eight though.
Okay.
Um Don't think it's necessarily anything with this one three going on.
That's set.
Fours and fours, sixes are down here.
>> [snorts] >> Okay, what the heck am I missing?
Is there something about what these can really be?
Cuz what happens if you are a seven?
You would have to be a seven.
Does that tell me anything? I don't think it does. Just means one of those three.
Cuts away those.
Um okay, so we are um We're we're struggling here.
What about nines?
We Again, we can't put a nine in this 14. Maybe we just needed to start thinking about this 14 like we did these.
Just didn't necessarily see the restriction, but we know there's no nines in this thing, right?
But that just means one of these is.
I guess that means you can't ever be a nine cuz if this is a nine it sees you.
If one of those is a nine it sees you.
That seems a little bit much.
What's Well, maybe just think about what the highs and lows of this set this 14 are.
We can't put a nine in it. We can't put an eight in it.
We can't put a six in it cuz of you and you.
So does it just have to have No, cuz this could also be like the two, three, four, five, couldn't it?
Cuz it can have a five in it.
It's either the seven or the five that goes in this. I guess we have to think about what those options are.
Cuz if it doesn't have a seven, it is two, three, four, five.
These would be the two, four, and the five. You would be the three.
You wouldn't be obviously the four.
So one of those two would be.
If it has the seven in it, I think that's all the restriction. Oh no, you would you couldn't be a two either cuz of the one, two, six.
Oop.
So you would just be a two, four with a three and a five.
Two, four, that would be the nine. Five here.
I think all that could work.
Let's go back to the the concept of it having a one on it.
Or actually be an a a seven which also requires it to have a one on it.
If it has a seven and it has the one, that's eight. It needs six more.
And it just has to have a two, four pair in it, doesn't it?
That's weird.
Yeah.
Cuz it has a seven, it has to have the one just by the math of it. So we're at eight. We need six left over. We've already used the ones. We can't do the one, five, so it has to be a two, four pair.
So no matter what we do with this, this is a two, four pair. Huh.
Which means you're not. You are a nine and a two.
You are not a four.
And what's the This would be a seven then, right?
Yeah, cuz this would be the one. This would be the two, four. You'd be the seven.
Now what does that do?
Uh it starts to push.
Well, it's going to be one, three, five, seven, and nine up here.
The problem is none of that is restricted, is it? Unless there's something maybe going up on a column here that I'm not quite seeing.
Doesn't look like it. One, three, five, six, seven, eight. Oh, you can't be a nine.
One of those Okay, so one of All right, one of these two has to be a seven by the row.
Cuz nothing else can. Which means you None of you can be.
That's good. Okay. There we go. You are the four. You are the nine. You are the seven. You're the nine. You're the five.
You're the nine. Now we can probably start digging on this thing. Goodness gracious. That was a little tricky one to find. Which means none of you are nines. You are a nine.
This is a one, three, five, seven or there could be the eight in it, I guess.
Um Yeah. Okay. Let's go back to the 16 now cuz I think this is well restricted. Or actually, let's think about the 12.
Can't be the nine, three anymore. It is our five, seven, which means you're not a five.
Yeah.
And you can't be five.
You can't be eight.
You could still be three or six. Can you be the Yeah, you could still be either, I think. Unless there's something across the line that's going to break. No, the five. Let's do that first. You are the seven and the five. Which means you are not sevens. One of you two will be.
Let me think about this. It's It's either nine, one, or nine, four, three. Can't be nine, four, three cuz it would break this now.
Cuz I would have to just be two twos. So you cannot be the four. You are the one, which means those are 10. You have to be the six. Eight, six. Okay. Four.
You're not fours. You were not threes.
I think that should do it, right? Cuz you're a given. You now have to be the three.
You two cannot be threes.
You can't be a six. Five, sevens. What are these two?
A one and an eight.
Okay.
Uh did this nine, nine or any of these tell me anything?
Or do we need to start looking at what these can be?
One Oh, this is a one, six, eight triple.
That's interesting. So you are a five.
You're not. You are not. So you have to be a five.
Okay. So keep going. If these are Yeah, these are one, sixes, and eight. You also can't be a a one. So you will be that seven, eight, seven.
Good. The eight will come over the six and the eight. This is a one, three pair. You're not ones and threes. You are.
So we're starting to get a lot of these things kind of sorted out. This one or three don't know. We might have to do again Sudoku. What are you? You're a given digit cuz again, go back to our triple that's just sitting here staring at us. You have to be the nine.
Yep, that's the only thing left over there.
Okay.
And what does any of that stuff do?
Anything crossing over further?
Let's take a look at our Sudoku cuz I think we're kind of in that area now. We're probably just missing one or two little things here or there.
And a Sudoku hunt maybe helpful. One of those two will be a three.
Don't really like that.
Oh, four. That That's what it was. You are two and four. That's going to give us Yeah, there it is. One, six, two.
Okay. That's the eight and the one. You have to be the eight and the six. The one says you are the three and the one.
Now we can do the math on this one cuz that's nine. So you have to be the five.
Yep, this is all breaking apart now.
You will be the seven.
Which means you're the three, you're the eight. That eight's going to tell us the seven and the eight. That's going to tell us the six and the eight and the three and the seven and the one and the three and the four and the six and the two and the four, etc. etc. >> [snorts] >> Um you can't be ones.
You can't be twos. So probably something cutting across. Yeah, you can't be fives.
And you can't be nines.
Something's got to be easier. Yeah, there it is, the three. Two, three.
That's going to break all this open. So you're now the nine, one, five, two.
Seven, one, one, three, five, and nine.
Okay, there we go.
Okay, there's a The beginning of that wasn't too difficult if you if you can see the X-Wings and how these things were all kind of interacting. There certainly was a a spot here in the middle where I was struggling to find something to work from.
>> [snorts] >> And it kind of came into I guess thinking one about how these uh unmarked cages could interact with each other.
And I guess this 14 cage there's more to it than I was thinking. Particularly that two-four which I thought was kind of an interesting little uh grouping there cuz it didn't matter what we put into this thing. The two options left over required this to be both the two-fours. So that was curious. But anyway, that set everything off. So fun puzzle. Really enjoyed that one.
Kind of like the little pause there. The the fear of holy crap, can I finish this one or not? But we got through there in the end. So good puzzle. Really enjoyed that. Hope you all did as well. And uh we'll see you next time. Thanks a lot.
