The Atlanta Braves are recovering from injuries to key players including Spencer Strider, Shawn Murphy, and Hassan Kim, with Strider and Murphy expected to return soon while Kim is scheduled for mid-May return; the team's rotation is strengthened by Martin Perez's exceptional 2.22 ERA performance, and they are strategically managing bullpen depth with Aaron Bummer's diminished velocity prompting consideration of roster changes.

The Atlanta Braves Reinforcements Are On the WayAjouté :
It's been a great start to 2026 for the Atlanta Braves, and they've done it without some of their key players. Those players are working their way back and could help boost a team that is already one of the best in baseball and off to their best start in 26 years.
You are Locked on Braves, your daily Atlanta Braves podcast, part of the Locked On Network, your team every day.
Hey, welcome back to Lockdown Braves.
I'm your host, Jake Mastriani. On today's episode, we'll give an update on some of the rehabbing players for the Atlanta Braves and when they might return. We'll dive deep into Tuesday night's win over the Tigers and set you up for the Scooble Richie matchup on Wednesday night. But let's start with the injury updates. We got a ton of them on Tuesday and a lot of it is good news with one exception. And let's start with the bad news first because that's the way I like to get my information. Walt Weiss said that Spencer Schwelenbach still hasn't started throwing following a procedure in February to remove bone spurs from his right elbow. Weiss says, "I hope we see him sometime in the second half. He's a long ways out." Now, Weiss did also say that Schwelenbach feels like he could begin throwing, but they want to be extra cautious with him, giving him more rest as he builds back up. So, not exactly the worst update, but was certainly hoping to hear that he was a little bit further along or at least throwing or close to throwing, getting some sort of timeline on him like we did with Hursten Waldrip. It was reported that Waldrip is throwing and will actually throw a bullpen next week as he gets ramped up. It's possible if you consider this the start of spring training for him, that maybe we see him sometime in June, which would just be awesome. Obviously, we don't know what the rotation will look like at that point, but it was a breakout 2025 for Waldrip. You'd love to see him pick up where he left off in whatever form that's going to be. Maybe you want to be a little bit cautious with him, you know, coming back from that. Start him in the bullpen. Again, there's many ways that you can go with this. The Braves have had a luxury at least to this point with a rotation just because of some of the performances they've gotten. But can't wait to see Walder getting back out there. So, good news on him. And Spencer Strider. Walt Weise said that his rehab is completed and that his next start will come with the Atlanta Braves, although he didn't say when. Strider last pitched on Sunday, so you could use him as early as this upcoming Friday in Colorado. As I said the other day, I think it makes sense to go Holmes, Strider, and Sale over the weekend in Colorado. And then you could turn around and do the exact same thing next weekend against the Dodgers, giving you Strider and Sell and Holmes who's thrown the ball well in that matchup against the Dodgers in LA. That would give Sale three straight starts on six days of rest. So again, I think that makes a lot of sense that the Braves want to do it that way, but we'll have to see how things play out the rest of the series against the Tigers. Um how Richie does in this and what the what the what it's going to be with Ronaldo Lopez. When do we see Ronaldo Lopez? I got more on that later in the episode. Walt Weise said that Shawn Murvy has done enough to show that he's built up to catch regularly.
That was kind of the first test for him, just getting built up to start behind the plate. Now it's just about getting him at bats at this point.
And that's the plan for this week at Gwynette. I think they're going to get him as many at bats as possible and then they'll re evaluate to see where he's at. Now, he started this rehab on April 14th. So 20 days would be May the 4th.
They have to make a decision after this weekend, if not before, what they're going to do with Shawn Murphy. So, most likely he's going to be up at the beginning of next week for the Seattle series. He was 0 for his first 19 before getting four hits in his last two games, but like I said, that was mainly him just working on on catching and getting that endurance built back up. This week, it's going to be more about what is it like on the hitting side of things. So, keep an eye on that for Shawn Murphy.
Obviously, me and Gora will cover that on next week's episode. Um, as for you know what happens when he comes back, I think it'll be Farmer that is the casualty when you see Murphy come back this week and that they'll keep Jonah Heim trying to keep that third catcher, that veteran catcher along around as long as possible. And then when Kim comes back, then that's maybe where you see him get the boot. And speaking of Hassan Kim, he was supposed to start his re rehab on Tuesday, but Columbus got rained out, so he'll begin it tonight in Columbus, putting him on schedule to return in miday. So, in the next week, the Braves could be getting back Spencer Strider and Shawn Murphy. And in the next 20 days, they could also be getting Hassan Kim. And then a month after Kim comes back, you could potentially be getting Hursten Walder. That's a lot of talent that's coming to the Braves in the next couple of months potentially.
And again, you don't know what's going to happen with the current roster between now and then, but those are some, you know, very impactful players.
I mean, the Braves went out and spent 20 million on Hassan Kim to be their starting shortstop. Obviously, they've gotten good contributions from Mauricio Dubon, but then it allows you to utilize Dubon in the way that he was meant to and that you can get him starts in several different places in the outfield, steal some at shortstop, and so I think that just deepens your lineup even more. Obviously, you know, what Jonah's done behind the plate is great, but you're hoping you get that and more offensively with Shawn Murphy returning to the lineup. So that's going to be a big boost for you. And Spencer Strider, at least with the way that he's looked his last couple of rehab outings, if you know, he's able to locate that force seamer up and he's got that induced vertical break up on that pitch. The slider's always there for him. I mean, you're looking at some really good quality reinforcements coming in for this Atlanta Braves team in a team that's already one of the best in baseball right now. Now, the only pitcher we didn't get an update on was AJ Smith Shaver. Obviously, he's coming back from Tommy John surgery, hoping that he'll get back some point in the second half. Not expecting too much from him this year, but still would love to see him get back out on the mound as he was having somewhat of a a breakout before his injury. So, hopefully we do get an update on him here pretty soon.
But still some good updates there for the Atlanta Braves players that they could be getting back very very soon to help out a team that's already at 21 wins. And we'll talk about that 21st win of the season next.

Today I wanted to dive deep into Tuesday night's game. We don't usually deep dive into games on here because we obviously have the postcast, but a lot that happened in that game and we just weren't able to get to all of it on the postcast. Uh the Braves did get a 52 win over the Detroit Tigers to start out that series. Tigers had some rough luck in this one. Their starter Casey Mai left in the third inning with a leg injury. Center ffielder Jav Bayz left later with an ankle injury after um awkward slide into first base on an errant throw that Matt Olsen had to to go get. So just a rough night overall for the Tigers. Certainly hope both of those guys are okay. Certainly Casey Mai is an Auburn Tiger who's having a great year and a contract season. Glad to hear there was nothing with the arm there, but he's off to a great start. Hopefully he gets back out there soon. On the mound for the Braves though, Martine Perez, five innings, just two hits allowed. He did walk four batters, but I'm going to talk about that in a second and why that's not as big of an issue as you might think. No earned runs, five strikeouts, 91 pitches, just six hard hit balls against. Two were beaten into the ground, two were fairly deep fly balls, and the other two went for hits.
Seven ground outs on the night. That's really nice. He was keeping everything down in the zone. A lot of weak contact against him. He was utilizing that change up and and curveball at the bottom of the zone. An 86.2 2 mph average exit velocity again. So that's where you see a lot of that weak contact. 10 whiffs, seven on the change up, which is the pitch that he threw the most in this one. And like I said, a pitch that he was just hammering, especially against those right-handed hitters. But here's what I loved about Martin Perez in this one is he just picked his spots. We talked about it pregame and being careful against righty's Glaver Torres and Spencer Tolson who had hit a home run in five straight games coming in with two outs and first base open. He pitched around Torque and walked him in the second inning. He got the next batter to strike out to end the inning. In the third he walked Gabber Torres with two outs and then struck out a lefty McGonagle to end the inning. And then again in the fifth he walked Gabber Torres with two outs in a base open to get to the lefty McGonagal who he had struck out earlier.
This time McGonagal did put it in play and scared us for just a minute. It was a fly ball that Ronald caught right in front of the right field wall. But still you see him picking his spots against those righties. He he knows his strengths and he knows his weaknesses as well. and he felt much more comfortable on the left on left match up against McGonagal than he did against a a righty in Torres who has really good numbers against him. So, I love, you know, not to pat myself on the back or anything, but I love when we break break it down before a game, things to watch for and then you can you see that throughout the game and it's on clear display that that's what Martine Perez was doing. So, again, you see four walks, but I think at least three of those were pretty strategic walks and just trying to make the perfect pitch. And if you walk Torqulson with a base open, you walk Lever Torres with a base open, that's certainly fine. You'll go after the guy after them. So, I loved watching the veteran just just be smart and pick his spots in this one. I thought it was another great game for him. And man, has he been really good for the Atlanta Braves, especially when he's been called upon to start this year. You talk about the rotation for the Braves this season and the start that they've gotten off to, and it's because of contributions from guys like Martin Perez. I mean, a 2.22 22 erra now in 28 and a3 innings at 0.99 whip. Just really incredible stuff for Martin Perez that you weren't really expecting. And again, I I like what I've seen from Perez. I'm not saying he's going to have an erra under two two and a half all year, but to to be able to to be able to use what you have and the change up and cutter, which I think are his two best pitches, and to be able to manipulate a lineup like that and and I mean, the Tigers had some good bats coming in. We talked about that yesterday, too, especially some of their lefties, but you had a lefty in Perez who was able to to keep those guys off base and limit those guys and then pick his spots around the righties to get the matchups that he wanted. I just thought it was a a well- pitched game by Martin Perez and a different type of well- pitched game, right? It's not the not the elite stuff. It's not the high velocity stuff, but he just he knew what he was doing. And so, I absolutely love that. I want to make sure that we called it out. Now, following him was Ddier Fuentes, who went two innings, no hits, one walk, no earned, one strikeout on 22 pitches. And like, I don't I don't mean this as any disrespect. It's two scoreless innings. I just didn't think anything was particularly special in this appearance for him. I didn't think the command was all that great. The fast balls were just kind of all over the place, but they were in the zone. It was more uh control over command. Only two whiffs, both coming on that slider. But again, it's two scoreless innings. I'm not sitting here saying it was a bad outing by any means. I thought they might actually push him for one more inning with the state of the bullpen, but I can understand not wanting to mess around too much with this one with Scooble and From going in the next two games. You had to get this one and they did. And I'm glad to hear, as we'll talk about later, they're going to leave him on the roster and leave him in the bullpen. As I've said numerous times, I feel like that's what they should have done from the start this year. They they began him in the bullpen to begin the season. I think maybe they were thinking they were going to need more help in the rotation than they have and so they wanted to get him stretched out as soon as possible to maybe put him in the rotation, but the rotation has held up so well. I I wish they would have just left him in the pin, let him continue to get his feet wet at the big league level that way and then move him to the rotation later in the season. But now, maybe the rotation is somewhat settled.
Maybe now they choose to do that. you need another strong arm and another strong option in the bullpen with plus stuff with which has. So, I'm hoping they leave him in the bullpen for a little while now. Let him continue to, you know, just figure things out at the big league level and then maybe, you know, use him as a starter later. Now, the big decision in the game here came in the eighth inning. You had Tyler Kinley out there on the mound. He brought the tying run to the plate in the eighth with the lefty Riley Green coming to the plate. Obviously, Kinley being a righty. Bummer was up in the pin, but Weiss stuck it stuck it out with Kinley and he got out of it. Now Kinley has that slider that kind of acts like a change up, which is a good weapon against lefties and Green has been crushing lefties this year. And plus, I just don't trust Bummer in that spot anyway. So, I thought this was another great call by Walt Weiss. You had a decision to make there. You had a lefty ready in the pin. You had a left-handed hitter up. You had, you know, Kinley kind of struggling a little bit. He had runners on second and third, two outs, but he decided to to go with Kinley in that matchup and it paid off for him.
So, wanted to give the props to Weiss there. But as for as for Aaron Bummer, like I said, he was up there with a spot in the eighth where you felt like if you really trusted Aaron Bummer, you probably do go to him there in the left- on left matchup, even though Green has been better against lefties this year.
But the fact you didn't tells me you just don't trust Aaron Bummer all that much. Now, he did come on in the ninth inning after the Braves added to their lead because the bullpen's really short right now. They're without Lee. They're without Iggy last night. So, you wanted to try to avoid using all your top relievers if you could. And then Aaron Bummer gives up the two-run home run, two hard hit balls, a single, and then the homer. You just can't trust Aaron Bummer right now. And honestly, he just probably doesn't need to be on this roster. I think there's a couple of guys that probably don't need to be in this bullpen right now, but you're trying to preserve as much depth as possible and you're paying Bummer a lot of money. The Braves have to find another lefty specialist. You just cannot trust Aaron Bummer in these spots. The VO is so far down. I used to love Aaron Bummer when he was throwing that sinker mid 90s just bearing in on left-handed hitters was really, really tough. Especially if you're an MLB The Show player from years past, you know how tough it was to hit Aaron Bummer. But now that VLOO has diminished the home run he gave up was just 90 90 miles per hour, middle up, middle away, and was just absolutely crushed out to center field. He just he doesn't have that giddy up anymore and he's not a guy that you can really trust. Now, as for the Braves offense, five runs on nine hits, two walks, nine strikeouts, five doubles in this one, a home run, three for 10 with runners in scoring position. Mike Ystreky had a big two out RBI to make it three to nothing, which felt really huge at the time for the game, but also just really huge for Ystrrimsky, who had a couple of hits on the night, which brought his average up over 200. Much needed night for him as he probably won't start the next two games with lefty starters on the mound.
Uh the Braves only had six hard hit balls in this game. They got two doubles, a single, and a home run out of those six hard hit balls. So, that's a pretty good ratio. We talked about it for the Tigers. They only had six hard hit balls against Perez. Only two of them went for hits. For Ronald, he had two doubles on pitches down. Now, that part of the zone is not an issue for Ronald. You did see him strike out later in the game on a fast ball up and that is what is giving him problems right now as we talked about in yesterday's episode. Still, great to see Ronald, you know, get a couple of extra base hits there and see him get rewarded for his hard contact. Matt Olsen, I I thought came up in a big spot here after Casey Meers had to leave the game. The Tigers went to their top lefty against Olsen with a runner on third and one out. And Os Olsson looked pretty uncomfortable his first two swings of that at bat, but then got a mistake sinker over the plate and drove it 344 feet to center field at 108.2 miles per hour off the bat for a very hard-hit deep sack fly, but made it two to nothing, which again was just another big add-on run there. So, great job by Matt Olsen. And then later in the game, Matt Olsen doubled off a lefty. So he had a stackf fly and a double alpha lefty in this game. And then Aussie who had failed to come through earlier in the game with a runner on third and one out. He missed a first pitch for Seamer right down the middle and then got nothing but splitters and sliders from Casey M who struck him out. But then against that lefty later in the game after the Olsson double, he had a big two-run homer to make it five to nothing, which ultimately led to the Braves not having to use Robert Suarez.
He did start warming up but didn't get hot in this one. Now for the bad in this game, Austin Riley over for four, three strikeouts, and those were some of the worst at bats I've seen from Austin Riley. And that's saying something. He can put up some pretty bad at bats when he's struggling. You thought Riley was coming out of it a week or two ago on that road trip and now it looks like he's just right back in the mud. And these at bats looked really, really bad for Austin Riley. Um, not not great.
Certainly certainly not great. You understand there's going to be some ups and downs, but you need a you need a much longer high point than what we had for Austin Riley. And then there was the decision to pull Dominic Smith Weiss, who's aggressive as we know. You had a runcoring spot early in the game. You pinch hit Kyle Farmer for Dominic Smith, which means obviously you're losing Dominic Smith's bat for the rest of the game. Farmer struck out and then got two more at bats. Now, he did get a hit against the lefty later in the game. Not saying it was a bad call, just playing through the Vanager's mind throughout the game. I didn't feel great about it, but if you're not going to use Farmer in that spot, why is he even on this team?
And you know, with Shawn Murphy coming back, as we talked about in the first segment, he might not be on this team much longer. So, a lot to really unpack from the game on Tuesday. So, I wanted to dive into all that because we weren't able to get to it all on the postcast, but love what I saw. obviously getting the win and a much needed win that you had to get with the starting pitchers you're going to face the next two days including the back-to-back Sai Young winner and TK Scubble who will be going up against the rookie and JR Richie.
We'll break that down here next.
Baseball season is here and now you can trade every game on call sheet. Taking a look at the matchups for April 29th in Major League Baseball, you have the Detroit Tigers against our Atlanta Braves. Detroit is trading at a 58% probability to beat the Braves with Terk Scubble on the mound, meaning a $100 trade pays out $17029.
The Dodgers are trading with a probability of 66% to beat the Marlins, meaning a $100 trade pays out $147.98.
On calli, you're trading against peers in a live market, meaning there's no house. And as the probability changes, you can buy in and out of your position.
For a limited time, download the call sheet app and use code locked on to get $10 when you trade 10. That's K als trade on anything. 18 plus only restrictions and eligibility requirements apply. Game two of this series between the Tigers and the Braves will get underway on Wednesday night at 7:15 PM Eastern.
And it's Terra Scubble versus J.R.
Richie. And a very uh interesting matchup here between a two-time Sai Young winner and a guy making his second career start. Now, obviously, the Tigers are hoping Scooble, a lefty, goes deep in this game. But it is important to note that in Tuesday night's game, they had to use both of their lefty relievers. and one of their best and they had to use quite a bit in that game. So, I would imagine he is down for this one if not the rest of the series.
So, I want to make sure that I pointed that out. Again, Scubal's probably going to give them a lot of length in this one and then they still have their three best relievers to go to. Uh, but it is it is worth noting that some of their best lefties, uh, Herder who they used for two and two-thirds innings last night and Holton who gave up four hits in an inning had to work in Tuesday's game. So, I don't know that they'll have any lefties coming out of the pin on Wednesday. And like I said, maybe not on Thursday afternoon either. Now, I think if you had to use those guys in the pinch, then you probably would. But again, just thought that that was worth noting as the Braves have some obviously some good lefties in their lineup that they'll want to try to neutralize. As for Terooel, six starts this year, a three and two record, a 2.72 erra, 0.99 whip, 36 in a third innings pitch, just six walks and 38 strikeouts. His the last time out was at Milwaukee against the Brewers. He went six innings, but gave up four runs on seven hits, no walks, just five strikeouts, 94 pitches.
You know how pesky that Brewers offense can be. He's gone at least six innings in five of his six starts, but he hasn't eclipsed a 100red pitches yet. You look at the pitch mix for Scubble, it's a four-seam fastball that averages 97 miles per hour with over 17 inches of induced vertical break, a change up sinker, slider, and occasionally a curveball that'll mix in there. Batters are actually hitting over 300 against his four seamer this year and hitting pretty well against his sinker, too. But the change up is the money pitch for Scooble. It has a whiff rate over 50% and it's how he neutralizes righties versus lefties. They're going to get sinker for seam change up. Lefties have hit him better this year, but it's a very small sample size. He's only seen lefties 26 times this year. 26 played appearances against lefties this season as teams are stacking righties against him. But it kind of makes more sense, I think, for lefties to be in there when you're going to get a sinker and four seamer most of the time. And those are the two most hitable pitches against Scooble if he has a a pitch that is hitable. But that change up is just absolutely devastating. And that's what righties are going to see. The righties are going to see four seamer change sinker and it's an upper 90s four seamer that you're going to get to the top of the zone and then a devastating change up will be tunnneled off that down and away. Easier said than done, but just guess on one of them. Either the four seamer up or the change up down. You're most likely not going to want to try to hit that change up down and just hope that you're right. I mean, that really is the strategy against school, especially for right-handed hitters. Uh, as far as matchups in this one, Jonah's probably going to get the start in this one, but he's just three for 16 off Scubble. However, he does have a double and a home home run of two or three two of those three hits and five runs batted in. Just four strikeouts in those 16 at bat. So, he's at least put the ball in play against Scooball. Jorge Matteo who could get a start in this one. He's three for five off of Scooble. And then Mauricio Don just one for nine, but that one is a home run. And then Eli White is one for three with a double as well. So, we'll see if Matteo Whiteheim work their way into this lineup. Again, you're facing back-to-back lefties. So, we'll see if those guys get starts in this game. Um, now Akunia has obviously never faced him. We talked about Akunia a lot yesterday, so I just wanted to mention it because now you are facing a guy who has upper 90s heat and likes to locate that at the top of the zone. So, figures to be a pretty tough matchup for Ronald, but just something to keep an eye on as he goes up against Scooble. How does he handle that fastball at the top of the zone? Because I would imagine he's going to get a lot of them from Scoo in this game. Now, J.R. Richie on the other side, my only advice for him, maybe don't groove a first pitch for Seamer down the middle in this one, but again, not a lot to go off here. We've only gotten one start from Richie, which was an exceptional start for him. He threw a lot of strikes in that one. uh maybe throw a little bit fewer strikes and and go for some more of the punch outs in this one, but I'm really not going to criticize a guy in his first outing who went seven innings, just two earn runs allowed. I'm really excited to see what he can do in in a big matchup. I know the matchup is technically against the Tigers hitters, but you know, the opposing pitcher in this one is Scoo.
So, that's going to be a lot of fun to see. Keys for me in this one. Again, it's easier to say for my computer chair, but just sit for seam seeker against school and hope you get it and hope you're on time with it. That is really your best shot at getting to school. Work them if you can and hopefully get them out of there after six innings, but obviously you'd love for it to be before six innings. And with it, if it's still a close game, hope you get into their their bullpen at that point. They didn't use Finnegan or Kinley last night. So, I'd imagine the game plan for them is if school can give you, you know, at least six innings with a lead, they go with those three guys.
For the Braves, you do get Dylan Lee back, uh, which is good. But you used Kinley last night for 23 pitches. It's a thin bullpen out there. I wouldn't be surprised. This is my my hot take prediction for this game. I wouldn't be surprised if we see Ronaldo Lopez piggyback Richie in this one and have him try to finish it out or at least do something similar to what Fuentes did on Tuesday and give you a couple of innings, you know, or if the Braves have a small lead, pitch him through the eighth inning and then go with Robert Suarez. We'll see how all that plays out tonight and score will obviously dictate that. But again, my hot take is I think we see Richie get through five, six innings and then maybe was depending on what the score is, see Rao kind of piggyback him there to possibly finish it out. Now, as I just said, the Braves did reinstate Dylan Lee from the paternity list. They DFA Carlos Carrasco as a result. Hopefully, they can bring Cookie back as he was throwing the ball pretty well this year. But that does mean that Fentes gets to stay up for a little while longer, which is great to see. As I said, I hope that he continues to get some looks out of the bullpen.
just continue to get more and more comfortable at the big league level. The stuff is there. We know the stuff is is real high quality, but just getting more and more comfortable and and getting over that mental hurdle that he knows his stuff can play at the big league level. So, good stuff from the Atlanta Braves. Can't wait to see Wednesday night's matchup between Scubble and Richie. Should be a lot of fun. Thanks so much for tuning in to Locked on Braves.
