[00:00:33]Gilbert Keith Chesterton was baptized Anglican, raised in a vaguely spiritual but essentially secular household, and spent his 20s as a young journalist in London running headlong into every fashionable idea his age had to offer.

[00:00:51]Socialism, theosophy, materialism, determinism, he tried them all on and one by one he found them intellectually embarrassing.

[00:01:05]The first thing that broke open was the question of evil.

[00:01:09]The world is obviously broken. Everyone agrees on that.

[00:01:14]The question is why and what to do about it.

[00:01:18]The secular answer in Chesterton's day was the same as it is in ours.

[00:01:23]Education, progress, better institutions, science.

[00:01:29]Given enough time and enough reform, we can fix the problem.

[00:01:35]Chesterton looked at that answer and found it hollow because it misidentifies what the problem actually is.

[00:01:43]The problem isn't ignorance.

[00:01:46]It isn't poverty.

[00:01:47]It isn't bad systems.

[00:01:50]The problem is inside human beings.

[00:01:54]Something in us is bent.

[00:01:58]He had a word for it.

[00:02:00]So did the church.

[00:02:02]Original sin.

[00:02:05]Now, Chesterton didn't arrive at original sin by reading a catechism.

[00:02:09]He arrived at it by observation.

[00:02:12]He looked at human beings as they actually are, not as we imagine ourselves to be, and found that the Christian diagnosis fit.

[00:02:23]We are capable of extraordinary goodness and extraordinary wickedness, sometimes in the same afternoon.

[00:02:32]We know what we should do and do the opposite.

[00:02:36]We build systems to make ourselves better and then use those systems to make ourselves worse.

[00:02:44]Every utopia in history has ended in a gulag or a guillotine.

[00:02:50]Chesterton saw this not as a pessimistic view of human nature, but as a realistic one.

[00:02:57]And he noticed that only one major tradition in Western thought had taken this seriously from the beginning and built its entire theology around it.

[00:03:08]He wrote in Orthodoxy that the doctrine of original sin is the one Christian teaching that can be proven empirically from the daily newspaper.

[00:03:22]It was the argument about reason itself.

[00:03:26]Chesterton's intellectual opponents, the materialists, the determinists, the early atheists, were very confident in the power of human reason.

[00:03:40]Chesterton pointed out the problem.

[00:03:43]If your brain is simply a physical mechanism shaped by evolution, why would you trust it to tell you the truth?

[00:03:51]Natural selection doesn't select for truth.

[00:03:55]It selects for survival.

[00:03:57]A brain that systematically tells comforting lies might survive just as well as one that perceives reality accurately.

[00:04:07]The materialist who says, "Trust science."

[00:04:10]is trusting a tool he cannot, on his own terms, justify trusting.

[00:04:17]Reason requires a foundation that reason itself cannot provide.

[00:04:24]That foundation, Chesterton concluded, is faith.

[00:04:30]Not a leap in the dark.

[00:04:32]A philosophical commitment.

[00:04:35]The decision to believe that the universe is intelligible.

[00:04:39]That our minds are capable of grasping it.

[00:04:42]And that truth is real and worth pursuing.

[00:04:47]He wrote, "It is an act of faith to assert that our thoughts have any relation to reality at all."

[00:04:56]He was Anglican for years while these arguments settled.

[00:05:00]He defended Christianity against his secular opponents.

[00:05:03]Wrote Orthodoxy. Wrote Heretics.

[00:05:07]Became the most famous apologist in England.

[00:05:10]And still hadn't crossed the Tiber.

[00:05:14]His wife Frances was a devout Anglican who had helped draw him back to Christianity in the first place.

[00:05:24]Friends pushed.

[00:05:26]Shaw mocked.

[00:05:28]And Chesterton waited.

[00:05:31]What finally moved him was something quieter.

[00:05:34]He had spent his career arguing that the church was right about everything.

[00:05:40]About human nature.

[00:05:42]About reason.

[00:05:43]About the family. About politics.

[00:05:47]About art.

[00:05:49]At a certain point, the intellectual honesty required asking, "If she has been right about all of that, why am I staying outside?"

[00:06:00]He was received into the Catholic Church on July 30th, 1922, in a railway hotel in Beaconsfield, baptized by a priest named Father O'Connor, the real man behind Father Brown, his fictional detective.

[00:06:18]He said afterward that he felt he had come home, not to a new place, to the place that had always been there, that his whole intellectual journey had been circling.

[00:06:32]That's the thing about Chesterton's conversion.

[00:06:36]It wasn't a surrender of his intellect.

[00:06:39]It was the conclusion of it.

[00:06:42]He followed the argument wherever it led, and it led him, after 20 years, to the same place the argument always leads when you follow it honestly, into the church.
