Each phospholipid has a hydrophilic head, loves water, and two hydrophobic tails repel water. In water, these molecules spontaneously self assemble. Heads face outward toward water. Tails tuck inward away from it. Two layers form for nanometers thick. Inside and outside of the cell are both aquous. The tail's hydrophobic interior makes the membrane a barrier to charged and large polar molecules. Small non-polar molecules oxygen CO2 pass through freely. Membrane proteins embedded across the billayer handle the rest. Transport signaling adhesion. The whole blayer is fluid.
