[00:00:00]I'm going to give this a go. I don't know. I haven't done this before. Kind of exciting and nervous. Not sure.

[00:00:11]Um and today we are going to be doing soap. It has been a couple of years since I've done soap. We used to do soap at our homestead, which was up north in Maine. And now we are moved to southern Maine and we are running out of my large supply of soap that we used to have. I used to make soap and sell it roadside.

[00:00:31]And um so then we ended up bringing all the ones that we hadn't sold and everything with us and it has lasted us 2 years now. But um we are running low and I need to make some more soap. Now I'm going to make some more soap for our family and I am going to start selling soap again by the roadside. We are very thankful that we moved to a town that um we can sell by the roadside. So um what I'm doing right now is I'm just going to take this I should grab another bowl actually. Um take this and lay this down. I don't know what I'm doing. Okay. So I am going to make a soap today with goat's milk. This is my one that I would it's like my go-to one of for most of my things was goat's milk. Lye.

[00:01:18]Also pass lye guys. It's okay. You just have to be cautious with the lye. We'll talk about that later. Um so I also have coconut oil, castor oil, olive oil, and lard. Um you could also use palm oil in the same space as the lard was. So if you need a vegan soap then you could use that. I have a bunch of lard from when we used to process it from our pigs up north. I still have a bunch of home canned lard from that time. So I'm going to be using the lard for that. So goat's milk soap. Um I am going to My kids are in the house still, but they are going someplace with my older daughters. Um or yeah, a couple of the older girls tonight. And so what I'm going to do right now just to make it go a little smoother tonight cuz I'll still have my disabled son still home is I want to take all my hard oils and I'm going to weigh those out and have them all ready and have everything weighed out so that when I'm ready to do everything it will come together really quickly. So let's do that now. So one important thing that you should have for your um soap is having a good scale. I just got mine off of Amazon. It was under $20 just for a scale that can weigh in whatever type you need to weigh it in. I'm going to throw my gloves on.

[00:02:37]I usually wear like a junkie shirt underneath. I don't wear something really nice cuz if it splashes up then, you know. Um if you do splash yourself with lye and water then you usually put vinegar straight on that and it will just take it away like that.

[00:02:52]Um but you don't want to do that. And I wear glasses anyway so I don't wear goggles. I just wear my glasses because if not I couldn't see what I was doing. Okay, so let's do this. Okay, so I have my big bowl and I teared this out. So I'm going to start off by putting in 34 oz of lard.

[00:03:19]So see that's 11.3.

[00:04:30]One of the cheapest bars that you can make um is just a plain lard soap and we'll make that as well on another video.

[00:04:43]Very old traditional type of soap. So 2 lbs oops, I did a little too much. 2 lbs.

[00:04:54]So I'm looking for 2 lbs too.

[00:05:11]Alrighty, so now I'm going to take this that's all measured out. I am going to tare this out and then I can put my coconut oil right on top of here. So I am going to put 36 oz of the coconut oil in here.

[00:05:36]Which is going to be 2 lbs and Sorry, I'm paying attention to it.

[00:05:47][laughter] Paying attention to it, so my brain's like not going there. All right.

[00:05:51]So, 16 16 32.

[00:05:56]33 34 35 36, so we need 2 lb 4 oz for that.

[00:06:05]This is going to be That one was upstairs, so that was all melty. This one was in my basement, so it's a lot cooler. And it'll be fine cuz we're going to do it like this. It'll be great.

[00:06:27]So, again, I'm looking for a 2 lb 4 oz.

[00:06:44]I do not buy my ingredients um in Well, I guess I buy them in bulk, but not in like huge pallets full. I get my coconut oil either at Sam's Club or at um Azure. I like Azure, but they don't always have it in there.

[00:07:17]two And two, so now we just need a little squeaky more.

[00:07:40]And I'll be right there.

[00:07:45]Then we are going to add our olive oil.

[00:07:48]So, we're going to do the same thing, tear it out. Oops.

[00:08:13]Okay, so we're at 12 oz here. We actually need I was thinking that it was wrong. So, we actually I went back to look. Um I had it written down from before online. So, I checked there. My daughter had written it down and it's 45. So, we need 45 oz. Which would be What is 45 oz?

[00:08:38]Two 2 lb 8 oz.

[00:08:45]No, that would be 40. 8 9 10 11 12 13.

[00:08:51]2 lb 13 oz.

[00:09:00]This batch is going to make a huge batch.

[00:09:06]2 lb 1 All right, there we go. The other one was just a smidge over. This is going to be just a smidge under. So, this is 2 lb 12.6 um for the olive oil.

[00:09:37]Then I'm going to measure 2 oz of or I just need 2 Tbsp of the castor oil.

[00:09:46]Not even 2 oz. I can eyeball this.

[00:09:50]Or I could do this. I could do just 2 oz, too.

[00:09:55]I think it's actually 1 oz.

[00:09:58]Now, castor oil is really good.

[00:10:05]There we go. That's good.

[00:10:07]Um it's really good to help bring bubbles as it Okay, guys, sorry I didn't share this. Um I just took a little bit of my um oats and I put them in the Vitamix. And so I just put it um just ground them up just a little bit and then I put just a smidge. You can see this layer here of honey on top. So it's probably about a cup of oats and um and probably like a quarter cup of honey in here. And these will be like add-ins at the end, but I just want to have it ready cuz once I get my gloves on and I touch the lye, I don't want to be touching other stuff. I just want to be like right here, not like going to grab other things. So I make sure I prep like if I have scents or clays or anything like that, I want to make sure that I'm prepping those things ahead of time before I actually um start doing the lye process. Okay, so kids are off going have fun. So I have a bag of This is goat's milk. And I'm going to share with you how we do it. So we just take a cookie sheet like this and these are silicone muffin tins. So we'd make goat's milk if we're making it or we would get goat's milk from a goat >> [laughter] >> or from a local farm and we would put it in containers like this and we'd freeze it like this. We found this was a perfect size to measure out the goat's milk. Um so and then as we do it, we would just like pop them into the bag like this. So, I am going to take now these that are already popped out and I'm going to measure or it doesn't really matter. I can take whichever ones and we're going to see I need uh 34 oz of goat's milk. So, we're going to turn this on.

[00:11:59]So, 34 oz is how many pounds, guys? 16 16 32, so 2 lb and 2 oz.

[00:12:20]Um that's what works best for us.

[00:12:44]My daughter is over here in case I need an extra set of hands. It is actually really handy if you're able to make soap with two people because then if you forget something and you're wearing gloves or two people stirring or I don't know or maybe it's just funner to chat with your daughters while you're working. So, we are almost at two.

[00:13:14]Okay, so I'm going to do one more from the bag. That was all the ones from the tray. One more from the bag.

[00:13:28]Okay, so now what we're going to do is I'm going to take this off and I am going to measure um my lie. So I'm going to make sure that I have my gloves and we're both have gloves on for that process.

[00:13:43]Actually, I should tear this. I found some right here.

[00:13:48]And we're going to put on our gloves.

[00:13:52]I am using um I used to get um I used to get the lie directly from Essential Depot and I have in the past and I got this from Amazon and it is from Essential Depot, but it was just cheaper to send it this way because of the free shipping and such. So that's the way we did it. My hands are a little wet, so it's hard getting the gloves on.

[00:14:22]My hands are pretty small, so these are good size.

[00:14:32]>> No, that's good. Doesn't have a little tab.

[00:14:34]>> Well, that's what I was going to see if they have one of the little tabs to put on.

[00:14:38]>> I should have like dried my hands thoroughly. Trying to get a glove on trying to get a glove on while your things are tight. Okay, so we [clears throat] are going to measure 18 oz of lie in here.

[00:14:55]So obviously that's going to be 1 lb.

[00:14:59]>> I can't see it from this angle.

[00:15:20]All right, so 1-lb two Now, I'm going to move this up out of the way. Get this back into your view. So, this is the goat's milk.

[00:15:33]I am going to pour my lye directly over this.

[00:16:00]I'm going to just give it a second. See how it's already starting to melt this?

[00:16:08]That's what you want. So, you want that kind of just melting in there.

[00:16:14]So, it's going to work.

[00:16:23]It's doing its thing.

[00:16:31]And I'm going to start stirring this.

[00:16:43]So, when you do it like this, it helps so that sometimes if you do fresh goat's milk, you can get the milk to actually curdle from the heat of the lye. So, when you do it like this, you're not going to get your goat's milk to curdle.

[00:16:59]See how it's not nothing's curdling here?

[00:17:02]It's just melting right in.

[00:17:12]All right, now this is mainly done. What I'm going to do is I have the bowl of all my fats here.

[00:17:21]Okay, so this is my bowl of lye. You always add your fats into the lye. So, what I like to do is I would um add my bigger fats in there first. So, if I have any clumps of anything, I want to add that in first. So, I'm just going to kind of scoop the bottom of this and get all my heavy stuff and just put it in here.

[00:17:51]I know, there's probably like a different way. I do it different ways each time, but I'm just trying to get that stuff in there. You could also take this and melt it first and then just pour it.

[00:18:04]Um this, as you can see, I'm doing a completely cold process soap. I'm not melting anything. I'm not doing anything prior. I'm just letting the lye melt all the fats here.

[00:18:40]I find it almost calming to do soap because it's like you're just kind of stirring it and waiting for the fat globules to go in. It's really interesting how just lye and fat make soap. I mean wood ash used to be that's what lye is made out of. So, what they used to do is they used to take these big big um drums and then make holes in the bottom of it and put their wood ash from the winter from their wood stove or wherever they were cooking from and warming their house from and they would um just use that to run through to make their lye.

[00:19:24]And some families used that actually at Plymouth Plantation they were just using lye just like that to wash their articles of clothing cuz they hadn't mixed it with fat yet, but they used to just use that lye. They realized that it had some sort of chemical compound that worked well to make their lye do what it wanted to do.

[00:19:44]So, um do you want to I'm going to start pouring some lye?

[00:19:51]>> [clears throat] >> So, this one that we're making here is honey oats, but it just amazes me that someone way back when I should actually see when this happened invented adding fat. And so, a lot of you guys have probably heard of just old large soap. Well, that's exactly what it was. It was the wood ash and the lard and we're going to be making that one as well.

[00:20:35]Um so, but this one's just a little bit fancier. Um I like to use this one for our bodies just cuz it has a little bit more and different oils. It lathers really well with the coconut oil and with the um castor oil it it just really Oops, I knew that was going to come.

[00:20:54]That's why I tried to dig it out of here. I don't want to splash.

[00:20:58]But, it did anyway. Just not too bad.

[00:21:02]>> [snorts] >> So, if you did not have a blender, you could just continually mix this until this totally melted. Um we like to use a dasher blender. It just makes the process a lot faster. I have actually made it just stirring before I had a dasher blender, and it took probably about an hour and 15 minutes of stirring, constant stirring. Uh so, it definitely does take a lot longer, and my trace was not as hard um as a trace that I'll get from using this dasher blender. So, let me just share that with you here.

[00:21:52]>> Okay. I didn't think so, but the other ones the old things that we had.

[00:21:59]>> All right. So, now I'm going to use my dasher blender.

[00:22:02]>> [snorts] >> I usually in the beginning will see if there's any clumps or right on top of them.

[00:22:11]So, there's something really beautiful about just watching the soap come together because it starts out with these lumps, almost like little igloos, not igloos, um icebergs in the middle of an ocean, and you're just kind of like I go on top of each of them and just kind of let them, you know, mix right into the blend. And so, I will start just mixing, and it starts looking like cake batter, and um so, it's really watery, and if you lift up your dasher blender, it will just drip. And so, that is not at a trace. You will see near the end how it does come to a trace, but it's kind of almost mesmerizing, just, you know, mixing it, and it's amazing that this that just the fats and the lye are going to make this beautiful soap to nourish your skin over and over again. We choose oils that are going to nourish our skin. Um so, the coconut oil is really nourishing. Olive oil is great for your skin. So, we're just choosing all the things that are good for your skin. It has helped with our dry skin. It's helped with our eczema. It's helped in so many ways to help heal our skin from the harsh chemicals that they went under for so many years using commercial products.

[00:23:29]So, I am just so thankful that I Even when I go to a hotel, I'm like, "Where is our soap?" because I don't want to use that chemicals. Here you go, you can see that I am checking the soap right here.

[00:23:46]Now, I'm going to dump the honey and the oats.

[00:23:53]I'm going to grab I have a spoon here with just a little bit of lard on it.

[00:24:01]I'm going to scrape this out with.

[00:24:17]Now, I'm going to try and stir this just lightly around. I don't know that I want it like I don't want it to trace too fast once I mix this in.

[00:28:23]>> So, I think a lot of times people think that store-bought soap does not have lye. Every soap has lye. Store-bought soap has lye plus all the chemicals. If you're making soap, you don't have to list lye as an ingredient because it's given. That's what makes lye. It's the saponification between the No, saponification. It's what happens, the chemical reaction that happens between the lie and the fats that make soap.

[00:28:51]Okay, guys. I have step one in this process. I just kind of pushed this up to one side and I put some whole oats. I put a bunch there. A lot of them are going to come off, but I just put some oats in there. And then as this gets a little bit um thicker, I'm going to try to do a little design. Try putting a little like dots in here to kind of make it look like honeycomb. I don't know if it will or not, but you know, got to do something.

[00:29:14]it is the next morning and these are our soaps from last night. I did these last night. I like to try to feel to see if they are how they're doing. So, this I can definitely feel that it's hard. So, I'm going to leave them like this here for the rest of the afternoon and then I will cut these this afternoon. Sometimes when I'm trying to rush it a little bit, I just kind of look in the side to make sure there's nothing soft. Okay, so I am just going to take So, let me get you guys down here a little bit.

[00:30:43]All right, I'm going to put these just right back in these containers. And tonight we're doing just a plain unscented goat's milk soap. A lot of times people like the plain unscented goat's milk and this bar here if they have allergies to things. So, this bar is unscented and it's just goat's milk and oatmeal and honey. And so, I'm trying to make the ones that are really good for allergy-friendly. I'll do those two first and then we'll do additional ones after that. So, the fun ones getting into different like scents and colors and stuff like that. But, we're going to do our basics first and we're going to do three each of our basics.

[00:31:20]Remember I just had a couple of these just so you can see how these come out differently, too. This is in the silicone molds and I will just be keeping these ones for our family here.

Before I just had a single cutter, but this is going to try to make the bars all the same size so I don't have to weigh out all the bars. They'll just always be the same size. So, we're going to try out this new thing. Pretty excited about it.
