The series masterfully deconstructs cinematic myths by applying empirical ballistics to Hollywood’s creative liberties. It serves as a vital reality check, proving that visual spectacle rarely aligns with the unforgiving laws of physics.

Hollywood Weapons: Down Mexico Way | FD RealAñadido:
[Music] [Music] Oh, hey. So, Larry's working on a movie or something, and I had a couple days to kill. So, I decided to take the trip to Mexico, and I'm glad I did, cuz while I was here, I did a lot of TV binge watching.
If you haven't seen the show Queen of the South, you are seriously missing out. Originally aired as a tel nolla called Lena delsur, the story revolves around Terresa Mendoza, a shrewd ruthless woman who soon rises from poverty and becomes queen of a drug cartel.
[Music] Hola, Buenos Diaz.
Seenor, [Music] what do you want, Cabon?
>> Well, I'm just here on a little vacation doing a little sightseeing. Get Do you know where I could get an authentic Chimmy Chunga?
>> You want to be a funny guy, huh? Are you sure you want to do this?
Well, you can try your jokes with her.
See how that works out for you.
[Music] [Music] Let's try this again. Mr. Standup comedian, what do you want, Cabron?
>> Okay. Okay. I just want to test things from TV shows and movies.
Tortois, >> what does testing stuff have to do with her?
>> Well, I want to test some things from Queen of the South, and I'm here to ask for her permission.
[Music] Whoa, that was intense. Hey, hey, hey, my man. What did she say?
>> Oh, she says fine. No problem.
>> Really?
>> Yes. Yes. Is everything is fine. You have fun.
>> Great. On this episode of Hollywood Weapons, we're testing Queen of the South. Man, I misread her.
Cabon.
[Music] We're going to put Hollywood to the test. This is Hollywood Weapons.
Well, now that we got that out of the way, let's talk about the show. Queen of the South is well written, superbly acted, filled with twist, turn, suspense, loads of action. Best of all, a lot of cool stuff to test.
>> And now it's time for possibly the last No Science ever.
>> In season 1, episode 7, Alre Paharo, Theresa and one of her crew get caught in a gunfight. Now, the bad guys want what's in the trunk. So, as they approach, one of them shoots the trunk lock, pops right open. Oh, I've seen that in lots of movies, >> dude. Tons of movies. All right, next scene is from season 4, episode 9. Los Piccados deos padres, Teresa's number one lieutenant, uses a kitchen table to take cover from a shotgun blast.
>> Hey, you know, it's my favorite character.
I I would have never guessed.
She is just thanking you for popping by and wishing you a safe trip back. Well, that's okay. Larry's probably home, so we probably we should probably go.
>> That's a good idea.
>> Uno.
>> Let's go. sauce quadro.
[Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] Welcome home, Larry.
>> Do you have a tracking device on me or something?
>> No, but that is a good idea. You get my text?
>> Yeah, I got your text. Luckily for you, I think these tests are going to be kind of interesting. Cool.
>> By the way, where have you been?
>> I was down south talking to a rich lady.
>> How'd you know she's rich?
>> Well, I mean, she had porches of monkeys with clothes on. That's a rich person thing.
>> I don't even know why I bother asking anymore.
[Music] >> All right. Okay. First test. Can you open a trunk by shooting at it? We've seen this in lots of different shows.
>> Tons of movies, man. One shot, boom, lock pops open. Not I've seen it done with handguns and long guns.
>> Yeah, we're going to do it with an AR type platform shooting 223 just like in the show.
>> Well, I've actually breached locks with shotguns, but never one of them. So, what do you think?
>> I think we're going to put a lot of holes in this trunk. Whether it's going to pop open magically like in the movies or not, I don't know. That's That's why we need to test it.
>> Well, I reckon I'm ready.
>> Okay, we have a protective shielding here for you to shoot through. Let's get our eyes and ears on. One shot.
Just put it right through the lock.
[Music] >> Let's Let's give it a few more rounds.
See what happens.
>> Yeah. So, again, we don't really I don't know where the actual mechanism is or how this thing opens up for this car.
So, >> and neither did the guys in the scene, right? They just come and they're blasting away at this. So, let's give it a few more shots. See what happens.
>> Okay.
[Music] [Music] I'm out. All right. Well, >> okay. So clearly we've put a lot of rounds right in and all the way around that lock. Let's kind of walk it around a little bit because like we said, who knows where the mechanism is, right?
>> Yeah. Yeah.
>> So go ahead shoot this till empty.
[Laughter] What he's what does he keep in there, I wonder? Well, that was kind of cool. So, I was shooting at the lock mechanism where the key would go in. Yep. No success.
>> So, I just kind of got lucky and picked straight down the line where I thought that would join into the bumper and it it broke it.
>> Yeah, exactly. Where the keyhole is isn't necessarily where the latch mechanism is. You hit it dead center right there on the latch. Probably broke the latch mechanism. And the cool thing is it actually popped open on its own like we see in the movies all the time.
>> Cool visual. So successful test. You can open the trunk of a car with a bullet.
You just got to get it in the right spot.
>> Yeah. It's not recommended, but if you hit the right spot, it does just pop open just like in the movies.
>> Yeah. Excellent. All right. So, the next test that I was worried about. Okay. You know, I got this. Okay.
>> What?
>> Yeah. Don't worry. I I can explain what's going to be next.
>> Mr. Zanov, I don't believe it. You are enjoying yourself.
>> I did not say that.
>> Yeah, you kind of did. You're You are You're admitting that you like to test stuff.
>> I admit nothing. Can we please just get on with this?
>> Yeah, sure, Larry. I won't say anything about it again. Lips are sealed.
>> I'm telling everybody. Okay, so episode 7, season 4 of Queen of the South. On orders from Terza, Pote is looking for a woman who can get them out of a bind with a local gang.
>> I reckon she doesn't want to be found.
Oh, no you didn't. Come on, flip the card.
Come on, say it. They can all see it.
Just read the words. And now it's time for brilliant Larry's science.
>> I really like the sound of that, you know.
>> Unbelievable.
So, when Pote finally finds this woman, he's surprised by her carrying a 12-gauge shotgun. Thinking quickly, he flips over the kitchen table and tries to use it as cover.
>> What? You know what you need to say.
Come on, use your words.
>> You've got to be kidding me.
Can you really do that?
>> That wasn't bad, but I think your little buddy there does it better.
>> Yeah. So, the question here is, can a heavy kitchen table protect you from a shotgun blast?
>> And at a very close range.
>> Well, as we always say, any covers better than no cover. So, I guess we got to test it.
>> I guess we got to, don't we?
How does it feel?
[Music] Yeah.
>> Okay. You can see we have our pumpaction shotgun here. It's a 12 gauge. It's a Mossberg 590 just like in the show. And of course down there we have our kitchen table set up as your target.
>> Distance is pretty close.
>> About 15 ft.
>> Okay.
>> We've got a gel torso behind that. He's kind of hidden behind that middle panel there. So if you shoot center mass, you should be good.
>> I know you're back there, Potay. He's back there.
Yeah, he's back there. Okay, two rounds, one right on top of the other. Safety and then fire on three, two, one.
[Music] [Music] Let's see. a belly full of lead.
>> And not just lead. Look at all the splintering that he's absorbed from the table itself.
>> I mean, this highlights the things we see a lot of times in movies and television. You know, concealment is not cover.
>> Just because you're hidden doesn't mean the rounds are not going to get through.
In this case, man, they he got shredded.
>> Yeah. And obviously, you're going to grab whatever you have available. But this case, poor choice.
>> Fair to say Estanas.
>> I think that's very fair to say.
>> We got another test. We do set up over here. Let's go.
>> All right.
>> I was a big fan of your work, man. I really was.
[Music] >> Okay. So, before Xanov also hijacks this, Queen of the South, season 3, episode 7, Lena Deaspatas, the brutal general in the back pocket of the cartel, wants to send a message. So, he figures what better way than to use a nail gun to nail a guy to a wall.
I know.
Gross.
[Music] All right, Larry, let's admit this one's proper grip.
>> Yeah, you ain't kidding. So, we obviously have our ballistic gel dummy here. We have a bone structure inside, including organs. I've got your pneumatic nail gun over there. We're firing three and a/4 in framing nails.
>> When you see the scene, your first thought is no. But if you watch it again, he's kind of strategic. He puts it right in the pocket in that dent indentation and it buries it in the sternum. So, I don't know. Could work.
Maybe hold up for a little while.
>> There's a chance. Shall we give it a try?
>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
>> All right. So, let me try cuz he puts he puts it in this shoulder first.
>> Yep.
>> Right in that pocket.
>> Right in the juicy part right there.
>> Sorry, amigo.
Okay.
>> All right. And he comes over here.
>> Right in that pocket.
[Music] And then right through the sternum.
>> This one's going to hurt, buddy.
>> All right, man. So, that's three.
>> Nothing sticking in the wall. I can see them buried in the like that one hit bone. So, >> I think this one did as well. So, >> let's try again. I'll try I'll try to get some little pretend this is the visible man.
>> All right, here we go.
All right. That didn't >> didn't go through.
>> That didn't hit any bone. Let me see.
Right here.
>> I got a little bit of push back from the from the thing.
>> Now I'm going to drop this one below the sternum.
>> Go ahead and give it a shot.
>> All right. So, now we got another three in there. And >> yeah, there's clearly clearly no exit wound on the backside. It It's driven those nails in quite deeply.
>> No, no, that's nasty.
>> But it it's not exiting out on the other side. So, >> so I mean, as we saw in the show, it's a fail test for sure.
>> Absolutely.
>> Cool on screen, not real.
>> Very painful looking, but it's not going to stick him to the wall.
>> I think it's safe to say I nailed it. No point in hanging around here.
Guy hanging the wall like that. I bet his name is Art.
>> Are you done?
>> I think so.
>> Let's go.
>> Those were gold and he knew it.
[Music] Oh, hi Larry. Do you see how I'm not even surprised by any of this? A bathroom in the middle of my shooting range, and I'm not even surprised. This is what you've done to me.
>> Relax, man. This is for the next test.
>> What do you need a bathroom on my gun range for the test?
>> Testing the foreigner with Jackie Chan and Pice Broden.
>> The foreigner? The men's room scene?
>> Yes, the men's room scene. And I'm a little little bummed out you doubted me.
>> You'd think you'd be used to it by now.
Okay, I think I have everything we need for that in my Jeep. Let me go check.
>> Oh, come on.
The Foreign is a cool movie and Jackie Chan is great as an aging Vietnam special operations vet who loses his daughter to a terrorist bomb blast. He's distraught and wants to find out the people responsible. So, he meets with Pierce Brazen's character to get answers. When Broman shuts him down, Jackie Chan sends a message.
Jackie goes into the bathroom of Broman's office building and in the stall hangs two bottles of flammable liquid from a string, then attaches a book of matches with a lit cigarette to the line. When the cigarette burns down to the matches, they ignite, burning the string. And when the bottles hit the floor, boom. Now, I don't want to ruin the movie for you, so I won't tell you what happens. But I will say this, it is not what you expect for a Jackie Chan movie. Check it out. You won't be sorry.
Superb drama. Speaking of superb dramas.
>> Yeah, very funny. Take that. I'll meet you around the other side to set it up.
Okay. And don't drop that.
>> Larry and I fill the bottles with a flammable liquid. And while I tie off the bottles, Larry secures the string across the walls of the stall. Once the bottles are securely tied to the main string, we're ready to test.
>> They were a little uneven.
>> About thatish.
>> Exactly.
>> I'm going to hang on to them. does come.
>> And of course, Jackie Chan started out with a pack of cigarettes and a matchbook.
>> Okay. Yeah. Well, he take he actually breaks the cigarette, puts the match in, and that's his that's his fuse.
>> Exactly. So, just like we rigged up here, we have the cigarette and the matchbook. We're going to put it over like that.
And of course, the secret to the gag is you have to get the string pretty >> right where the matches are >> to that right there. like that.
>> Nice.
>> Okay.
>> All right, buddy.
>> Then, of course, we have our source of ignition here. Go ahead and let go of it.
>> I got him.
>> Okay. We're going to just spin that like that for just a second.
And we're going to get that burning.
Got to get it burning pretty good, too.
>> Okay. Our fire extinguishers are in place. Everyone's in their safety position.
>> I'm very comfortable in here with you.
Yeah, I'm not >> okay.
>> Smoking pretty good.
>> Yeah, spinning a little bit. I tried to keep them still, but >> I mean, you know, the way it's hanging gravity and everything, it's it's going to twist just a little bit in the wind there.
>> Dude, when I was a little kid, we used to make all sorts of time delay stuff to set off bricks of firecracker. It was fun. And this is kind of a gag, kind of a takeoff on the gag they did in Stell 17.
Same kind of basic idea.
>> Still burning. There's the main go. Here we go.
>> The main body got the string. Come on, baby.
>> Jack.
There we go.
>> After several attempts, the bottles never broke.
[Music] Dang it. Well, the fuse cutting the string thing was cool. That worked >> 50%.
>> 50%. But that's a failed test.
>> Definitely a failed test.
>> I mean, it would have looked great if it worked, but I mean, and we wouldn't have seen that anyway, right? If it if it had stayed and ignited, what do you think?
>> Yeah. As we see here, the matches probably weren't even still lit by the time they hit the floor. So, even if the bottles had burst, you wouldn't have ignited the flammable material. And like we've already said, the building would not blow up like that, but it would be a nice distraction. Maybe the sprinkler systems would have gone off.
>> He still would have sent a message.
>> Well, he's Jackie Jan.
>> That's right. Well, look, man. Great day of tests. Can't thank you enough for it as always.
>> Yeah, and I actually enjoyed explaining all the sciency stuff this time.
>> Yeah.
Don't do that again.
>> Yeah, no promises, dude.
[Music] [Applause] [Music] >> Well, there you have it. Queen of the South and the Foreigner put to the test a double scoop of fun. You're welcome.
I'd like to thank Larry and the team for making it fun and safe. What did we learn today?
>> You can definitely open a trunk by shooting the lock.
You just got to hit the right spot.
A kitchen table isn't good cover from a 12- gauge shotgun.
[Music] A nail gun won't hold a guy to a wall, but it's still gross.
And sorry, Jackie Chan. The string did burn, but the bottles just wouldn't break, making it impossible to explode.
So, if you're watching a TV show or movie and you think to yourself, can you really do that? Reach out to us and maybe we'll put that to the test.
Never got that. Chimmy Chonga [Applause]
