When two identical [music] particles swap positions, one of only two things can happen. Either nothing [music] changes, but those are bosons. Photons are bosons. Lasers work because [music] of bosons. Or the system flips. Those are fermions.
Electrons are fermions.
Your chair does not let you fall through it because of fermions. Every atom, every element, every piece of matter built from just those two. But in one dimension, where particles cannot go around each other and must pass directly through, the mathematics breaks open.
The exchange factor is no longer locked to positive one or negative one. It can land anywhere in between, producing particles that are neither boson nor fermion. Something genuinely new.
