The Farmer’s Dog Review | How Fresh Food Affects Your Dog’s HealthAdded:
We all know that our health is super reliant on exercise and diet. But I got a wakeup call recently when my vet called me out on what I was feeding my Jack Russell Stevie and how he wasn't actually getting the right balance of nutrition that he needs. So with the vet's words ringing in my ears, I went on this hunt to find the best food for Stevie. And that's when I came across the farmer's dog, which makes fresh human-grade dog food designed to be both healthy and tasty.
Now, after a few months of feeding Stevie their meals, he's looking leaner, more energetic, and just all around healthier. So, in this review, I'm going to break down what the farmer's dog has to offer, how their plans and pricing work, what goes into their recipes, and how they stack up against other dog food brands so that you can decide if it's a good fit for your fur baby. Now, without further ado, let's jump in. So, if you're not familiar with the farmer's dog, it's a premium dog food subscription service that delivers fresh, ready to serve meals for your pup. The food is made with real human-grade ingredients and is designed by a vet to match your dog's specific nutrition needs. Everything comes pre-proportioned, so you don't even have to guess how much to feed. You just open and serve, and there you go, you're good to go. The company was founded in 2014 with a simple but powerful mission to provide dogs with a fresh, wholesome food that actually looks and smells like real food. Because it is backed by strong scientific research showing the benefits of fresh diets for dogs, the farmer's dog keeps their meals minimally processed to preserve more nutrients and avoid the fillers and preservatives found in traditional kibble. Their recipes have also gone through six-year long live feeding trials across different breeds, sizes, and ages, so you can feel confident that what you're serving is not just safe, but genuinely good for your pet. Now, let's talk about how the farmer's dog food is actually made. First, there are four recipe options, each made with clean animal proteins, nutrient-rich vegetables, and fiberpacked whole foods. Everything is gently cooked to lock in nutrients and keep the meals as close to fresh as possible. All the ingredients are sourced from local farms and trusted suppliers that meet human food standards. So, yes, it's technically safe enough for people to eat. Though, I'll leave that part to Stevie. Each meal is also blended with essential vitamins and minerals to support overall health. You can build a plan using one or more of their recipes. And no matter which you pick, you're getting fresh, balanced meals that are a big step up from the usual bagged kibble. When you subscribe, you'll get the full breakdown of each recipe. So, here's a quick overview. Each meal includes real ingredients like beef, turkey, chicken, or pork paired with vegetables like sweet potatoes, lentils, spinach, or Brussels sprouts. Plus, they'll add things like salmon oil and chia seeds for those extra omega-3s and essential nutrients. And all recipes are slowcooked at low heat to preserve nutrients and kill off bacteria, then quickly frozen to lock in freshness with no preservatives added. They're also committed to not using feedgrade ingredients or byproducts, so you'll only find whole foods you'd actually recognize in each meal. Now, if all of that sounds good to you, then you can check out The Farmer's Dog by hopping down to the exclusive link in the description below because for most products we talk about, we have special deals that you wouldn't be able to get if you went straight to their websites.
To get started with the Farmer's Dog, you simply sign up and complete a brief quiz. You'll provide details about your dog, like their name, age, breed, weight, current diet, their activity level, and whether they're a bit overweight or underweight. plus a few other small details. Using this information, especially your dog's size and weight, the farmer's dog will create a personalized meal plan tailored just for your pup, complete with recommended recipes and pricing. Once you place your order, your box should arrive within a few days. The meals need to be stored in your freezer and taken out to four about 12 hours before feeding. So, just make sure you've got a bit of freezer space available. After that, everything's pretty much set unless you change or cancel your plan. The farmer's dog will then just keep sending meals regularly, so your dog food is always covered. Now, the pricing really depends on your dog's size and its needs. For Stevie, my 8-year-old Jack Russell, weighing around 12 lb, his personalized meal plan included turkey, beef, and chicken recipes. His first box contained enough food to last about 2 weeks and came to around $47, roughly $4 a day. However, with a 50% discount on my first order, the price dropped to about $32 tax included. Plus, shipping was free, which was a nice bonus. Stevie is a small dog, so his cost is on the lower side. On average, daily prices can range from anywhere from about $2 to $14 depending on your dog's size and its appetite. For example, a six-year-old Shih Tzu weighing around $25 would cost just $5 a day, while a giant breed like a St. Bernard tipping the scales at over £100 could run closer to $15 daily. Since the amount of food your dog needs affects how often you'll receive deliveries, the whole plan is tailored specifically to your pup's unique needs. Another great perk is the farmer's dog's commitment to sustainability. Their cardboard delivery boxes are recyclable, and the insulation materials are biodegradable, meaning you can compost them or simply dissolve them in water. The food pouches themselves are BPA free, non-toxic, and can be recycled once they're rinsed out. So, if eco-friendliness matters to you, the farmer's dog is definitely ahead of the pack. When it comes to competitors, after diving into the world of natural dog food and doing quite a bit of research, we tried out a couple of other online brands that stood out. Ollie and We Feed Raw. Comparing Ollie to the farmer's dog, both offer personalized meal plans that adjust to your dog's specific needs. However, the farmer's dog tends to be a bit more affordable and provides a higher protein ratio, though it uses less organ meat, which is actually beneficial for dogs. Ollie does have an advantage if you're looking for a dry kibbleike option to mix with fresh food, and their lamb recipe features meat sourced from New Zealand. Both brands add synthetic vitamins and minerals to their recipes, but the farmer's dog includes more vitamins overall, which made it a better fit for us. And Stevies definitely seems to be pretty excited about it. Then there's We Feed Raw, which takes a different approach. As the name suggests, their food is completely raw, not cooked at all. Instead, they use a cold pressure process to eliminate harmful microbes before freezing the food for delivery.
Their pricing works on a weekly basis and for Steviey's size, one week of food was just over $28, making two weeks about $56. So, while the farmer's dog offers more competitive pricing and more tailored meal plans, if you prefer a fully raw diet for your dog, which some believe is closer to what dogs naturally eat, then we feed raw could be the better choice for you. At the end of the day, the real test came down to Stevie.
And let's just say meal time has never been more exciting for him. He starts jumping around the moment I grab a pack from the fridge. We tried all four recipes and while he was happy to eat every single one, turkey was the clear winner. He finished it faster than any of the others. After about 6 months on this fresh food routine, I've noticed some real changes. Steviey's got more energy, his coat looks shinier, and his breath doesn't knock me over anymore.
And yeah, even cleanup has been easier.
Everything's more consistent and way less smelly than before. That said, fresh food does take a bit more effort.
The portions come in soft packs, so it can get a bit messy at first. You'll need some freezer space, and you need to remember to remove a pack out of the fridge ahead of time. Fresh meals can't be left out like kibble, but honestly, Stevie licks the bowl clean every time, so waste really hasn't been an issue at all. So, I've been really happy with the farmer's dog. It's not just that Stevie loves it. I feel better knowing exactly what he's eating. If you've been thinking about switching to fresh food, this is a simple way to get started without over complicating things. It's been a great move for us, and I think a lot of dogs and their humans would agree. And that's all for this review. I hope you found this video helpful. If you did, then please remember to hit that like button and subscribe for more like this. And if you're thinking about trying the farmer's dog, I've included an exclusive link in the description.
Most of the time that link comes with a special deal, and you wouldn't get that deal if you went straight to their website. So, it's definitely worth checking out.
