[00:00:00]In the dead of the Cold War, Operation North Pole was a top secret Soviet mission designed to infiltrate Western naval secrets beneath the Arctic ice.

[00:00:09]The K-129, a Golf II class ballistic missile submarine, was dispatched in 1968 with a crew of 98 tasked with shadowing US warships [music] and eavesdropping on classified communications.

[00:00:22]But as the sub slipped beneath the polar ice, disaster struck. On March 8th, radio contact abruptly ceased. The Soviet Navy launched a desperate [music] search, but the K-129 had vanished without a trace.

[00:00:35]Three months later, the US Navy, using advanced underwater listening devices, located the wreck nearly 16,000 ft below the Pacific.

[00:00:47]In a covert operation, the CIA launched Project Azorian, raising part of the K-129 in 1974 to recover its nuclear missiles and codebooks. [music] The operation was plagued by deadly mishaps, including a massive mechanical failure that dropped most of the sub back to the ocean floor, taking the secrets and bodies of its crew with it.
