Sneaky Tornado Threat in North Dakota

[00:00:17]Chasing a sneaky tornado threat in North Dakota.

[00:00:29]Got to play non-royalty music, guys. We don't want to get in trouble for copyright. But we'll give you a little synopsis of what's going on. Some storms broke the cap up in the Turtle Mountains, working their way down to the southeast. Uh we'll see if some more storms can break the cap more so in the Devil's Lake Basin and west. These storms will move to the southeast throughout the evening.

[00:00:58]There is a outflow boundary station north of Devil's Lake. If any storms can latch on to that boundary, we could get a sneak tornado uh threat here. So, that is why we are live.

[00:01:16]We are headed west to Devil's Lake right now. We're going to monitor uh radar situation, see what storms are doing, firing, and we'll kind of go from there.

[00:02:53]Once again, we are headed west to Devil's Lake. We had storms initiating up by the Turtle Mountains. Um, but just keep going west a little ways. See what the storm development does. There is a cap in place. So, if these storms break the cap, there's a whole lot of instability in the atmosphere. Um, tornado, sneaky tornado threat, hail up to 2 in and damaging wind gust are all on the menu, guys, for Devil's Lake Basin up towards the Canadian border.

[00:03:26]Uh, just south of Devil's Lake and eastward along the Highway 2 corridor over towards Grand Porks in western Minnesota.

[00:07:15]It's kind of radar or future HR model showing storms should start blowing up uh fairly soon hopefully north of Rugby. If they can break that cap, they can't break the cap, it could be a bust. But we already got one storm that broke the cap. So, we got faith south of the Devil's Lake Basin. I don't anticipate much of a threat there. Uh, too warm a temperatures. The cap is too high. They won't be able to break the storm or break through.

[00:08:03]I haven't seen the tail, but I have seen uh the Dominator 3 retro in action.

[00:08:14]Once again, it's kind of a later day developing system. Uh there ain't many stormchasers out, especially ones that are live. So, you're getting the action here and here only.

[00:10:16]Might be a little bit of a wait here before we get to the storms, but you never know what could pop up. That's why you got to act. You got to start the stream right away because storms can fire anywhere.

[00:10:35]I think my plan is to go to Oh, Church's Ferry Leads. We'll stop, see what storms are doing, and go from there.

[00:10:55]This system's targeting an area that's, you know, already been inundated with rain this summer.

[00:17:43]Got a sneaky tornado threat today.

[00:17:46]As long as storms break the cap, they'll move southeast through the Devil's Lake Basin into the Red River Valley. There's a outflow boundary station north of Devil's Lake, 15 miles. If any storm can latch onto that boundary, our tornado just goes up.

[00:18:09]But there's no guarantee that it'll latch on.

[00:18:17]2in hail and 70 mph wind gusts are also possible as well as rain. Obviously, you don't see dry storms in North Dakota very often.

[00:18:38]It's honestly been a fairly active year.

[00:18:46]Not for everybody, but last summer was pretty wild.

[00:18:58]Broke North Dakota state record of tornadoes for the year.

[00:19:03]First EF5 recorded in the US since 2013.

[00:19:15]We even had an anti-cyclonic tornado on that day. If you don't know what that is, tornadoes in the northern hemisphere spin counterclockwise.

[00:19:25]Tornadoes in the southern hemisphere spin clockwise. Anti-cyclonic in the northern hemis hemisphere would mean the tornado is spinning clockwise.

[00:39:08]Once again, we're chasing a sneaky tornado threat. There's a outflow boundary just north of Devil's Lake running east to west. And if the storm can latch on to that itself, um tornado threat goes up. Uh, these storms that fired up towards the border have yet to come down south far enough to attempt to latch onto the boundary. A storm that is newly developed is a higher odds of attaching to the boundary.
