French opposition leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon has declared that if elected president, France will withdraw from NATO's integrated military command, arguing that the alliance serves only to place France under American tutelage; this proposal invokes the legacy of Charles de Gaulle's 1966 withdrawal and challenges NATO's unified command structure, potentially triggering the most significant crisis in the Western alliance in decades given France's status as a nuclear power and permanent UN Security Council member.

NATO FREXIT? Mélenchon’s Explosive Warning Rocks Europe, Macron Faces Major Backlash!Ajouté :
A political bombshell has exploded inside Europe's war alliance.
French firebrand leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon has vowed that if he becomes president, France will break away from North Atlantic Treaty Organization, triggering fears of a historic fracture inside the Western block as tensions with Russia continue to rise.
In a direct attack on Washington's dominance, Mélenchon declared that NATO exists only to place France under the tutelage of the United States.
The explosive statement strikes at the heart of America's control over Europe's security system at a time when NATO is rapidly expanding its military footprint across the continent.
If I am president, France will leave NATO.
NATO serves only one purpose, to place us [music] under the tutelage of the United States.
Keeping our distance from NATO is France's historic line.
We drove the American bases out of our country.
Before Mr. Sarkozy in 2007, no one had thought of reintegrating the integrated command of NATO.
We will proceed in stages. We will start by exiting the integrated command >> [music] >> and by distancing ourselves from all shared equipment with the American army.
Invoking the legacy of former French president Charles de Gaulle, Mélenchon praised France's 1966 withdrawal from NATO's integrated military command and the expulsion of American bases from French soil.
He accused former President Nicolas Sarkozy of surrendering French strategic independence by dragging Paris back into NATO's command structure in 2007.
Mélenchon said the divorce from NATO would happen step by step.
France would first leave the alliance's integrated command before [music] cutting military interoperability and shared defense systems with the US military.
The shock waves are enormous because France is no ordinary NATO member. It is a nuclear power, a permanent UN Security Council member, and one of Europe's military giants.
A French rupture with NATO [music] could unleash the biggest crisis inside the Western alliance in decades.
