But executing a maneuver of that scale requires a logistical miracle that is rarely discussed in the history books.
We love to talk about the firepower of the Abrams tank and the Apache helicopter.
But the true architects of victory in the desert were the supply truck drivers, the load masters, and the quartermasters. During World War II, the famous Red Ball Express was a massive convoy system that ran day and night to keep General Patton's tanks fueled as they raced across France.
The logistical tale of Operation Desert Storm makes the Red Ball Express look like a local delivery route.
To sustain the 100-hour ground war, the United States military had to move over 1.3 billion gallons of fuel into the theater.
They had to distribute over 37 million pre-packaged meals ready-to-eat and pump millions of gallons of purified water across a hostile desert environment.
Every single time a 120-mm depleted uranium shell was fired, a massive logistical chain stretching all the way back to an ammunition plant in the United States had to function perfectly to replace it.
The coalition built an iron mountain of supplies in Saudi Arabia, proving that the United States military is not just the most lethal fighting force on Earth.

From a geopolitical and economic perspective, Operation Desert Storm was a master class in strategic execution, largely driven by what became known as the Powell Doctrine. General Colin Powell, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, was another veteran of the Vietnam War who was determined to never repeat the mistakes of that conflict.
The Powell Doctrine demanded that the United States should only commit to military action if there was a clear risk to national security, a clear and achievable objective, overwhelming force to ensure quick victory, and a definitive exit strategy.

They understood the difference between winning a conventional war and trying to occupy a hostile nation.
A lesson that would tragically have to be relearned a decade later. Operation Desert Storm was the absolute zenith of conventional mechanized warfare.
It was the war the United States had built its military to fight against the Soviets in Europe, executed perfectly against a Soviet-style proxy in the desert. The entire world watched the footage of precision-guided munitions flying through windows and Abrams tanks destroying armor in the dark.
And the global military paradigm shifted overnight. In Beijing, the Chinese People's Liberation Army watched the total destruction of the Iraqi army and realized with absolute horror that their own massive, infantry-heavy, technologically inferior military was completely obsolete. The 100-hour ground war proved that massed formations of cheap armor and static defensive lines are nothing more than target practice for a military that possesses air supremacy, thermal optics, and decentralized, highly aggressive leadership. The ghosts of Vietnam had been exorcised in the sands of Kuwait, replaced by a new, terrifying standard of American military dominance that would dictate global security for the next 30 years.
