Conflating a basic screening for cognitive impairment with a measure of high intelligence is a fundamental misunderstanding of clinical diagnostics. This video provides a necessary reality check on how these assessments are actually used in professional practice.

Trump doesn’t remember the test he tookAdded:
Donald Trump has made additional comments about the cognitive test that he took. So now here I am debunking all of the things that he said all over again. My name is Hillary. I'm a licensed and certified speech language pathologist who specializes in concussion and neurological rehabilitation. And I give the test that he is talking about. It is called the Montreal Cognitive Assessment or the MOCA for short. I'm going to have you all take a listen to his comments and I'm going to start and stop this video because there is so much going on that I am not going to be able to save it all for once. So, this will be a longer video, probably two parts in California.
Gavin Nuskum is not good, but he gave the worst interview a month ago. Did you see it? Where he said he was incompetent, he can't read. Can >> the interview that Donald Trump is referencing from Gavin Newsome had to do with when he was talking about having dyslexia. Now dyslexia is a learning disability. It is not any has nothing to do with intelligence. It has nothing to do with how you might succeed in the world. It has to do with it is difficult for you to read. The words are on the page. Sometimes they letters get flipped or reversed or upside down like things just it's basically just how the visual system is processing the words on the page. It has nothing to do with intelligence, but that is what he is talking about, >> right? He can't do it. He said uh he's uh horrible for testing. We should give him a cognitive test.
>> While Gavin Newsome likely did very poorly on testing in school, academic tests are very readingheavy. You have to either read textbook, read lots of information and then answer questions on that information or it's very heavy reading on the test itself. So it is very likely that Gavin Newsome did not test well in school. But that would be very different than a cognitive evaluation. Either a neurosychological evaluation or something like the Woodcock Johnson testing. those would be able to um allow Gavin Newsome to be tested and actually show what his cognitive abilities are in spite of dyslexia. So even if Donald Trump wants him to take a cognitive test, it would not show what Donald Trump expects it to show.
>> I took three of them. Aced all of them, by the way. Three of them.
You know, I'm the only president I'm the only president to take a cognitive test.
>> You're the only president to take a cognitive test because you're the only president who has had such bad decline that you require a cognitive test. Also realize just how difficult it was for him to pronounce the words precisely to take a cognitive test >> because I don't think Obama could pass it. I don't.
>> Didn't he get into Harvard with a C average? I don't know.
>> And now Donald Trump is accusing Barack Obama of getting into Harvard in some other way than just academic performance. Um K pot calling kettle black. Gotcha.
>> What's that? I don't think he could pass it. I don't think Well, Biden, isn't it?
Give me a break.
You know, the first question is very easy. It's a lion, a giraffe, a bear, and a shark. They say which one is the bear?
So, there are two major things about the fact that he gave this the lion, the bear, the giraffe, and the shark, and pick pick which one's the bear. First of all, anyone with dyslexia would be totally fine doing that. That is called picture identification, and it's just point to this animal. It's an auditory instruction with a picture. Absolutely.
Gavin Newsome would not have any trouble with that. Also, though, the bigger thing is that that is not the test. That is not the question. There are animals on the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, but it is name this animal, name this animal, and name this animal. There are three animals you have to name them. You do not get a choice. Pick one out of four. You do not. It is not a multiplechoice test. So, either he's forgetting what he's already said about this test and what the test actually was, or he is getting assessments now that are even more down the dementia path than the mocha. And everybody says, "Oh, 30 questions." Everyone says, "Very standard is >> the Montreal Cognitive Assessment is not 30 questions." It is out of 30 points, but it is not actually 30 questions.
>> Standard test, but very tough around those last 10 questions.
>> The last 10 points on the test are you were asked to remember five words before you got them twice. Then you're asked to repeat them after about five minutes.
That's five points. And then the final questions on the test, there are six points. This is the last 11 points on this test is orientation. Tell me the day of the week. Tell me the day, the month, the year, where are you, like what type of location are you at, like a hospital type thing, and what city are you in? Those are the final 11 points of this test out of 30. Five points for delayed recall. Five minutes of five words.
And what's the date? There's not too many people even in this very room unlike Newsome.
>> Interesting. I don't know if I've ever heard Donald Trump say Gavin Newsome before, but he did. He forgot to say Newcom. Fascinating.
>> This room of geniuses. He said, "I'm in a room of dumb people." That was not good. That was not good. You know what happened to him after that? It wasn't a pretty, but I'm in a room of brilliant people, but a lot of you wouldn't have been able to answer those 10 questions.
>> Thanks to all my supporters for being here. I'm going to call you all brilliant, but then I'm going to tell you you're all dumb asses. So, there we go. Give me money.
>> And when I got the score in the test, >> can't even do that sound right. I can't do that sound properly because I don't have too much saliva pulling up in my mouth. But, and then when I got the score on the test, Mhm.
>> the doctor said, "Wow, I've never seen, you know, you have five doctors lined up. They're all over the place."
>> No, Donald Trump. I do not know when I have five doctors lined up because I have never needed five doctors lined up for me for anything that I've had going on. I've had surgeries. I've had two children. Nothing. No time have I ever needed five doctors lined up. Also, were they lined up or were they scattered around? Cuz you said those two right after each other and it doesn't make sense.
>> I said, "Should I take it?" You know, I've had different phases. They've said he's a mad genius. I didn't mind that too much. Then they said he's a horrible human being. I don't like that much.
Then they said he's really not a smart person at all. I really hated that.
>> So Donald Trump is just now admitting to the fact that doctors are seeing his decline apparently because first he's a mad genius. Then he's a horrible human being with a slurp by the way. And then he's just not a very smart person. But yeah, that's pretty common for people going down the dementia line, like doing okay, not as good, and now you really suck. Maybe you should get tested. So that clip of Donald Trump was less than 2 minutes long, like a minute and 45 seconds, plus you had a whole bunch of clapping and laughing. Not a lot of good stuff within the amount of time that he was talking. He was slurpy and slushy.
He had very imprecise pronunciation. He apparently forgot what the test was even of. And then when he talked about it, that test, if he was given a picture, if he was given four different animals in a picture and said, "Point to this one."
Mm- That is way down the line. That's like a pediatric childhood achievement type test. Like that is not something where you get to brag, oh, I'm so cognitively awesome. I've aced all my tests. Um, so he either completely misrepresented it, which he has never done before that I have seen. He has always said you have to name three different animals. Yep, that one is true. Um, the test is not 30 questions.
It is 30 points. The last 10 and 11, the last 11 points, as he mentioned, I mean, anybody with a functioning brain who looks at their phone once is going to know the date. Um, is it hard for him to remember five words that he heard 5 minutes ago and he heard them twice and had to repeat them?
Not hard for me. It's all I have to say.
It's not hard for most people. So, um, there's just so much going on with that clip. And he keeps talking about this cognitive assessment that he is taking.
It is a screener used for cognitive decline and dementia. People who are taking this test are not people who should be president of the United States. I fully agree that the president and the vice president and I will say senators and representatives and supreme court justices, everyone. Yeah, let's give them all neurosych evaluations and make sure that they are fit for the job.
But the mocha, that is not going to be the test that they're going to be given.
And with all of that, as always, Donald Trump, he's got to go.
