In block and beam floor construction, a slurry mix (typically 4 parts sharp sand to 1 part cement) is applied to seal the block and beam floor, followed by DPM (Damp Proof Membrane) insulation, cavity trays, and underfloor heating systems. The slurry coating provides a better seal for the floor structure, while the DPM barrier prevents moisture from rising through the floor. This multi-layer approach ensures proper moisture management and thermal insulation for the building's foundation.

This £1.8M Mansion Is Finally Taking Shape… Episode 2Added:
Make sure I don't get down them blues.
Oh no.
Is it noisy? That is it noisy. I'm not bad but I'm not interested. Hey wheels like a crab. Let's tell subscribers how you clean a bin.
And on these rulers here which is called a builder's rule have different scales.
So, welcome back to our second episode on YouTube. I'm Craig Rose from Rose Brick Developments and I'm documenting this mansion we're building. So, the big mansion build, it's now going to start getting really interesting because most of the substructure is now done. So, I'll take you around and show you what we're up to. Um, but after this stage, you now have to settle DPMs out, DPCs, cavity trays, then we'll be on to superructure. So, looking forward to showing you that. Let's go.
down.
So, what we're doing now is slowing all the block and beams. Jamie's brushing it in. And then obviously this side it'll look more like this when it's all brushed in. And just topping it all off now. So >> it's going in all right, isn't it?
>> So yeah, basically DPM insulation another DPM under floor heating and then screed. Make sure I don't get down them blues. Oh no.
To wash it down. Just obviously mixing all the slurry mix and then bringing it over with these big tubs.
all over me park. We can wash it off in it.
It's like liquid floor, doesn't it?
This goes in a lot easier. It's when it goes to the bottom of that tub in it.
Goes a bit thicker.
Takes some brushing, doesn't it?
Yeah. Doing >> a good job of cleaning that.
Yeah, we need to do cavity fill as well.
225 mil below top of bricks. You see what I mean? So, there's going to be a lot to do as well actually.
>> Hey.
>> Yeah. Well, ballast. Probably have to get some ballast. Yeah. Short it. So, we got cavity filter doing all right, haven't we? It's not quite 225, is it?
But it's saying that on back there. It's not Nothing's retaining. No, it's retaining on there. Is it?
Yeah.
Might go actually.
I think it's like shoot.
Just how we like it. Is it?
>> Huh?
>> Wet.
>> Wet. Yeah. Let's see what he's doing.
I got a couple of lads off today. One's on holiday living it large and one of other lads has been buffing up all morning. So obviously he's have to go home. We'll see how it's tomorrow. We'll take you over here where where the mixing bay is.
Well, explain what we're doing.
It's not here.
Yeah, that's how you do it.
>> What mix ratio we doing?
>> One.
>> There you go.
>> Yeah, I see it.
>> I don't find it as bad with these ones though. It looks worse with your phone.
>> Yeah. Yeah. You feel like >> Yeah. As long as it's like 4 in one.
>> Yeah.
It can go a bit too sandy anyway and then it don't all fall in George does it. It's too thick. Yeah.
It's not following. Try and set it on follow.
>> Yeah. Follow.
>> Huh?
>> Clever.
>> Yeah. Yeah. So, what we're doing here, we're mixing the slurry up. So, Leon's just doing a 4 in one mix ratio. So basically four parts of sharp sand to one part cement and then putting SPR in it just to get a better seal.
This is the SPR basically. You don't have to put that in to be fair. But idea of the um slurry coating is just to seal up block and beam floor. So just gives it a better seal.
tell you go through some cement.
Oh, big old mixer.
Hey, cheese.
No cheese. You did all right there, mate. to be fair >> could do it gun on this this hose couldn't it >> what >> could do it gun on hose a bit >> it on and off >> yeah I'll have to think of what in my van actually >> I'll have a look I'll go and see if I've got one in van just turn my house pipe off a Hey, just turn just turn pipe off a minute.
I'm going to uh put put this good on hose.
Yeah, J.
>> Oh yeah.
>> Chuck, we chuck this on hose.
That's better raking. It don't cling to brushing much does it >> now.
Not too much.
You >> reckon?
>> That's not even first bag yet.
>> First bag.
>> Oh yeah.
On Ryan's meterage.
>> Hey, >> Google's not always right, is it? Hey.
Wow. We use it anyway, don't we?
>> Hey, >> we use it up.
>> Can we use it in in building all this?
>> Yeah. Yeah. There's them. Yeah, >> we need to get that done anyway.
>> Yeah, we do.
>> Yeah, do for Harry.
>> No.
>> Living it large, is it?
>> Yeah. Lay on. Le on turn back on. Just make sure this uh end goes back in me.
I've got me on on my van up for it.
>> Huh? Then I think once you >> throw those wet thick bits down anyway.
It's when blocks dry up a bit in it.
Big build up on back rock.
Big build up. Need to blow drains up as well actually.
>> Excuse me.
>> Yeah, it did make me smile.
>> How's it going?
How many times you wet him?
>> This is the first time actually. Yeah.
I'm just going to set this time lapse up here.
>> And then when you've done this bit, just mute camera over there. Internal storage full.
>> Really?
>> I seen that over there actually.
>> What? It had an SD card in it.
All right, we'll go through these uh drawings with window openings. And now just spoke to customers and then uh we set them out. So So put a couple of bricks down. We windows are then we know don't we? So we got that window there which is as it is. Yeah. That's floor two light and that that one there is going to be solid wall.
>> Yeah.
>> They did tell me that before but um I just about set. Yeah. Wind there. same size as that one in same distance so it's symmetrical from there to new one just centralize that >> centralize it in middle from inside >> yeah it's going to look better in it and then all that will be solid wall on that back yeah >> so that's that done and then all these windows in these rooms obviously we haven't got to worry about them yet cuz they're up aren't they just bear them in mind so we'll have brick return >> window >> window brick column >> what's window did you say size >> minimum I've put 800 on drawing bar 900 window >> floor to lint and that return there would have that return 3.8 8 m opening solid wall through so I thinking that really that would probably be nice having some nice glazed doors here going through into kitchen nice glazed doors there into pool room so that's it Wednesday is now complete lads clocked off 14's been in today which is nice to see and basically started running first coer blocks around the inside and then obviously where you see these gaps here is where insulation fly through the floor so on top of all this now it's all been slurried. We'll have um DPM barrier going down 150 mil P insulation.
We always put another layer of DPM or vis on top um just to basically seal all joints where the joints are on P insulation and then it'll be a wet system under floor heating and then a liquid floored on top of that and then obviously that works well with under floor heating when it eats all the slab up and under floor he eat heating that actually go really hot.
It's not hot to walk on just sort of feels like lukewarm. idea on it is it trickles out a bit of temperature and then keeps all the rooms sort of nice and warm. So there'll be different zones on it to obviously control different rooms on thermostat.
Um but yeah, just basically continued all the uh concrete blocks around cuz still classes below ground. So literally top of that is the finished floor level, but these walls are being built up. So obviously that's why we've put them in on a few more to do down in that area and that wherever the solid walls are going to be.
Uh that's about it really for today.
Um yeah, like I said, gring's been done and then hope you're enjoying it so far.
I mean this is only our second episode, so sort of still learning as we go and I'm no video editor, just a local lad from Mansfield, Nottinghamshire.
doing a bit. That's what you can do in it. So, I'll see you tomorrow. See if they get embarrassed.
>> Bit filmage, >> huh?
>> Bit filmage.
>> Filmage.
>> That's a bit sloppy, isn't it?
>> Perfect for this. Yeah.
>> What we doing, Jamie?
>> What we doing? Playing some 140s, mate.
>> 140s. 140 concrete blocks >> all over it.
>> That's it.
>> You ready for it?
>> Beautiful. Here's a demo.
>> Grab you.
>> Yeah. Good.
>> Thank you.
>> Can't see your legs.
>> Says they're out blues and all.
>> Oh, I ain't got any blues down there.
>> Brilliant.
Dad walking around with ear defenders on still 10:00. I thought you had the job.
>> Is it noisy? That is it noisy.
>> You are so is it noisy?
What you doing here then, Dad?
Getting it a light sweet ready morning just to get rid of all debris off at main flooring.
>> Yeah. They're ready for internal blocking tomorrow.
>> Concrete in where doorways are.
>> There you go. Put insulations fly through.
>> Top sweeper. Are you? And then over here we have the singer.
Leon just sings all the time.
>> You just sing all the time, don't you?
>> I do, man. I love it.
>> Look at me, Barry.
>> Who's done that?
>> Right. Me a new Barry.
Hey, wheels like a crab. Now, it's all this mess here. Going to clean this up. Don't forget to wipe your snot up back. It breaks. We sort that mess out all around there, don't we? So, Sam is laying some 100 mil dense blocks, which is Oh no. Oh no. My phone. My phone come off.
>> That's actually going to be a wall going all the way up front ground level up to the uh roof like that one.
It's also going to be cavity and then block work on inside leaf as well. All the air bricks are in telescopic air vents.
I'll show you what they're for.
Try and be a bit informative.
Let's go and have a look.
Uh yeah, it's only a way of building up the grind. So is what these are for.
These are telescopic air vents. So basically just slot into that section there like that.
And then you put an air grill on the front.
Obviously these aren't long enough. I've actually got some extenders for them and the longer versions. It's just merchants had in at time. But yeah, these just basically build it build into brick work. And that bottom section there goes underneath the actual block and beam floor. So there it goes into grill and then exits out the bottom of that and then all the sleeper walls we've done to take the beams on. We've left out gaps obviously for air flow. So then it cross ventilates from each side. So these are all out perimeter and any sleeper walls like under here where beams actually sit on on both sides. We got beam there, beam there for example and then we just basically let out the gaps for that cross ventilation.
Just going to get a bit of office work done while the lads are cracking on. So hard to concentrate sometime here.
Yeah, just going through a few emails, inquiries.
Um, obviously it's stuff we need ahead for this job. So we'll be ordering tools soon. Um, obviously more aggregates here, blocks, etc. Now you just come back from holiday, ain't you?
>> Yep.
>> Great time away. Living time time of your life.
>> Time of my life.
>> Having time of your life.
>> Got our reporting block work up. This course we're not actually seeing because we've got the floor insulation to go down yet and screed. We just like to join everything up so it's nice and neat.
We got the Bell saw electric saw.
Brilliant. These are You actually get two uh different sets of batteries for them. Different ampage. That's the 82 volt one.
need to put that in charge actually, don't we?
That could be said, dizzy. Keep walking around.
So, down here is obviously the pool area, but we can't actually do that yet until we've got the structure of the pool built to then sit the new beams on.
Video. Oh, you broke his block.
>> What's your language?
>> I think I might have just got that on video. We're just looking for photo opportunities now.
>> That was a good video clip.
>> Slippy.
>> Can't that looks great to me.
>> Just ignore it. Just ignore it. It below wrong.
>> What?
>> Hello.
>> I'm not bad, but I'm not interested.
>> I'm not. This call is regarding your SIM card you are having with Auto.
>> No, I I I ain't got a SIM card with Auto whoever that is. I'm not interested.
It's wasting your time. Cheers.
Nuisance calls all the time. Drive me mad. Honestly, they got no better to do it. Phone calls. They must do it and waste time and waste my time. I must have about 200 block numbers in me phone book. Probably more actually.
Don't know why bit right gets on my tits. Yeah, it's all going well. Really glad we're on sort of top side of the substructure now. So, you know, all ground works and then all floor preparation we've done. Just below those B and beam floors. Actually, we sighted it with concrete. So, stoned it all up, put DPM in and concreted it. Probably just whacked it all down and everything in the stone. So, it just gives a better better sub subbay, so to speak. But you don't actually have to concrete below block and bean floors. You can actually just chuck weed control down and stone it up or well some people just to chuck weed control down. But yeah, just a better job to concrete. It just prevents any watering grass coming through. But yeah, so cracking on really. So I'll update you tomorrow.
Oh, is it six?
>> Yeah.
6 m. What's that? that we just put two foot 9 door in that can't that's from inside to inside isn't it obviously they've not returned that block yet are they so they have that block >> yeah just brick >> glued yeah >> yeah 6 m just >> so I mean you can set that out now then can't they sh >> yeah some frustrate.
Where's that ruler gone?
Yeah. So, all we're doing on here, if the drawing's not got measurements on, dimensions on, all you do is get your scaled ruler, check the scale on the drawing. So, for example, this is one in 50. And on these rulers here which is called a builder's rule have different scales for different scales on drawing.
So like here for example just need to know internal size of the garage from block to block. So all you do put that zero on the wall there and then obviously look for the other side of the internal wall there which is 6 m on that. So that'll just tell us now what we need to build the wall at.
So that's the roller.
I don't know if you can see it on camera, but see all different scales. Look, there's one in 100, one in 200, one in 500. And then each end ruler has different scales on it.
And that's it. These drawings are the tough CAD drawings. Actually, a lot better than paper. You can't tear them and they don't get wet.
>> Well, >> yeah, they are worth having.
>> Bin day tomorrow. Take the old wheeler bin out.
Get emptied. It stinks. This is still like his professional bin cleaning services.
>> Yeah. Let's tell subscribers how you clean a bin.
What they have to do?
>> When your bin's been emptied, just give up to water. Pour it straight in your wheelie bin. Put water dilute it with quarter of bleach. Bleach it.
>> Doesn't matter about the type of bleach.
Have >> rubbish rubbish in your bin's empty.
Really every fortnight and you can eat your dinner out your own bin.
>> There you go.
>> There you go.
Now recycle.
>> You got to pay for a bin cleaner now.
Are >> you going bus now? you.
>> Hello.
>> What do you do about that?
>> Terrible, isn't it?
>> Bin lads out of the job.
>> I'm just setting out now for the super structure. So, push stripper DPM in and it's going to have damp on top of it where DPC damp on top of the block work and then the cavity tray coming up. So, this is where entrance is going to be and the um that wing walls coming out.
So this is actually external in between them them them uh that brick work panel that brick work panel that's external but it's going to have a vated roof on it. So that would be nice glazed area and obviously at front door with two side windows so I'm carry big bricks where brick grabs not bothering >> they stack all the way aren't they? Hey minute.
>> You just fancy the water, didn't you?
>> Just fancy the water. Didn't you mate?
Step.
>> That's it.
>> So this duct here is for the uh internet coming in. So obviously expose it that runs under block and beam floor and then we can use that as a ductin. upbeat or internet guys can anyway to then come under the staircase and then obviously you can just link that anyway with cat five or cat 6 or whatever all the way around the build cuz obviously it's going to be a big build it's going to need >> probably a couple of points put in for the internet so it's just about forward thinking is it m you all right >> yeah good >> I've rang John today but he's not got back in touch with me so I couldn't even knowing about that door I've left him a message and left a message with office so >> I've not I've not sent an email, but like I said, I've left him a voicemail.
She didn't answer. Then I rang office and they did say he's out on site all day. So whether or not if he'll ring me back tomorrow, but anyway, there's that to >> to Iron out just regards to that door and then I'm going to ask him about that jacuzzi area cuz I just need to know bang on if he wants us to build that up.
Do you know what I mean?
>> Yeah, I got you.
>> Yeah. Just going through a quick call with the customer about some bits and bobs for tomorrow.
>> That pallet's knackered, isn't it?
>> Yeah. Jamie caught that a Fortnite to go with digger. Not.
>> It is what it is. Rest of them shouldn't be that bad. I mean, them them bricks there, they they're not really on a great pallet either, are they? But we'll have to lift them up and put them on better pallets. We've got some better ones down there now, aren't we?
>> These blue ones at best, aren't they?
>> Yeah.
>> Got some more 100 mil blocks coming soon for internals.
Uh we had about 15 15 pipes last week, but for dense blocks concrete, but problem is you start getting through them and luckily we've got a lot of storage here. So we're all right for room. It's a lot more harder on your smaller jobs when you've not really got much room to put material storage. So, we're using certain areas up there just to store all the uh like bricks and blocks, all the heavier goods, so to speak.
Um, so yeah, it's just a bit easier when the site's bigger. You can bulk order then and obviously just store it and then it's there when you need it. Just case of being organized, getting it all here. And because we're doing a lot on socials as well now, it's very time consuming all the video and the editing and stuff. But I think if we get any busier like we're always busy anyway in terms of our work. Um but I think if we get even busier cuz obviously we're growing team as well. Um you know looking to scale our construction company even further. We've done well at scaling up to yet this year which I'm happy about but it's all about sourcing right lads as well. So and what I'm getting at here is is the time involved with the video.
I like I'm I'm liking doing it cuz end of day showcasing what we do best. But yeah, it's just a time involved. So, I think as what I'll do, um, if we can keep all this YouTube content going in socials, I'll probably end up getting a part-time or me even leading to full-time videographer and editor. I want to get a bit of drone footage as well now, actually. So, I'll upload this on video. Um, like I said, this is only our second YouTube video, so we'll get better as we go. Uh, but yeah, just do our best. What more do you do? What more can you do? Let's see where it takes us.
note might come from it. Um or something may come from it, but if you don't put yourself out there, you don't know. Do you give it a whirl?
>> Appointment confirmed.
>> So the message Oh.
>> Yeah. So, we put >> Do you want that 300 along here as well?
>> Put DMZ in now.
>> DPC.
>> And then we just got Well, we're bridging DPC outside and inside on that one.
>> Uh, and then that one there is going to be the cavity tray.
>> Where you going?
>> Oh, yeah. There's these uh voids to build up here, ain't there?
>> Yeah, I can do that now. Soon as he comes out, if you do that now, >> yeah, it's easy to bang them in that cav there and then obviously that brick works going from that outside wing wall and bolted to that post. Just explaining.
>> Yeah, we got some cottage knocking about for that, haven't we? Swam swam today.
Swami >> swam. Who swam?
>> I don't want to scare all me subscribers, do I? 140 mil internal blocks running all way that end to that end. And then same on there. We're going to have steels over garage doors. Then above the garage doors, which will be here, there' be a big gable end. And then above this garage is going to be like a office or we can class as a bedroom, whatever, but I'm not drawing.
It's an office. And then some French doors looking out. We a Juliet balcony on it. Well, obviously have to have the the safety glass going across. Um, you can open the doors inwards but not outwards. And that's going to have lints going across and then steel steel uh post going up to support the new patio doors.
>> Yeah. Yeah. Tomorrow.
>> Oh yeah.
>> We got the 100 there.
>> We've got loads of hundred in lock.
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, there's about No, there's about six rolls, mate. Stacked up on shelf on left hand side.
>> That's a good roll.
>> Like four rolls really.
>> Four rolls.
>> He's going to be going a bit spicy if he carries on.
>> Who's dirty troll on floor line?
>> Who's it? Dirty troll.
>> Brand new.
>> She don't use it.
>> Oh my god.
>> Yeah. Yeah. What?
>> 300.
>> We've got all brick grabs anyway when they start other way if we need them like >> you know what I mean bricks out now and then where doorways are basically leave that as single skin brick and then insulation can butt right to back at brick then you don't get any cold bridging.
We've set all these internal walls out now. So wherever you see he's camera followed me in that. Hello. There we go.
So, we had all these entrance doorways here. We left them open where they actually going to have the doors. So, then same again insulation to fly through cuz top of the actual finished floor after liquid screed goes down.
It's going to be this level here.
Another doorway in there. This wall here is actually going all the way up from that level up to up to roof. That's going to carry gable end running from there that end to that end. So trust was a bit sat on this um another doorway obviously.
So yeah, this should continue all the way through all the way to that back corner and then another cavity wall that'll be carried all the way through. So that'll be another structural one. Yeah, we've just been doing the cavity fill. We've not had to do loads of cavity fill here because we've used trench blocks, but we run out of trench blocks a bit later on.
So we've had to come up with a couple of course of 4in concrete which has created that board there. So we've got a bit of more cavity filling to do down there.
All top ends all solid trench blocks um up to sort of top at ground. So yeah we're now on Friday and a bit of a slow week just with setting out always is though really when you start setting up internal walls out marking doorways checking everything's drawing checking drainage. Obviously all drainage is in now below block and beams. So just a bit of time involved with setting out but now we'll be on superructure to fly up.
Yeah, that's uh Aris lad is it makes me feel big four six >> six >> that's Liam where he did with that when he opened it. Yeah. Five and a half.
>> Oh there dropped out. That's why you can't see it.
>> Four five six and a half >> sound. Yeah. Yeah. Six and a half.
six scenarios.
>> Oh dear.
>> So, so yeah, take them and then get them printed up and hope they're going to be ready at the end of this week. I'm aiming to get a video out at least once a week. I didn't actually get any footage yesterday because just that busy all day. Um, so yeah, struggled to get any footage from yesterday, but got some from Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and been doing a lot of office work and that as well as soon as I get home. So been it long long days must have been about I don't know 80 hours this week 70 80 hours after today and right here there used to be an old bungalow which got demolished and then obviously we're doing this new build within its place and if you've missed any of our content you can head over to our Facebook Instagram or Tik Tok page and have a look at the sort of like quick clips from week one to week six.
Um, we're now on, this is now the sixth week on this project. And I did miss a lot of filming because I filmed everything 9 by6 portrait way instead of landscape. So, I didn't actually realize for YouTube that you needed landscape.
So, a lot of the content annoyingly is no good for YouTube for the full screen.
Um, but yeah, like I say, if you have missed any of it, just head over to our socials, um, Instagram and Facebook and Tik Tok. We're also on LinkedIn as well, but obviously we post different stuff on there really. So yeah, you can head over there and you'll be able to see the old bill getting demolished and then obviously starting front ground work where it's up to sort of stage it is now. So yeah, we topped out with blue bricks. All ear vents are in. Um so basically top of them blue bricks now is the finished floor level. And that's it.
Friday's finished. That about wraps the week up basically. At least it's a nice day. Hopefully it's going to be nice weather on the weekend.
Uh yeah, looking forward to next week carrying on with the brick work. So we'll be setting all windows like lowle windows out your floor to interact windows and obviously doorways and then yeah just cracking on with brickware basically. So always starts taking shape when brick work goes up.
Yeah. So I mean it's a full-time job obviously just managing lads alone and then running the business on top of all that. So yeah, I'm enjoying it. Uh I mean I'm off at tools now cuz obviously I'm focusing on growing the business and project managing lads. Just making sure jobs are all good and then dealing with inquiries. Um plan on looking for probably somebody to give us an end on office side of things soon. just like inquiries coming in quoting just you know sending all proposals off all that sort of side of things cuz it's a lot really when you're trying to wear too many hats. We've been focusing a lot on systems in our business as well over the last year in particular. um you know getting systems in place such as like customer relation management system CRM and we've also built a bespoke well say say bespoke we spoke to our business anyway we like things to work on a project uh project management software so it's very transparent to client where they can see like daily logs we do so we keep them up to date on daily logs um and like any variables, any changes sort of signed and sealed usually within day and agreed before work gets carried out if if there's any changes. Uh so it's very sort of clear and yeah there's there's a lot more stuff in like documentation uploading all documentation for lads but we've just built the portal and custom fields are we we want we still got a lot to learn on it actually. It takes I mean we're probably 9 month 9 months in on it and it's quite complex but as soon as you get hang on it it's it's uh really good.
So yeah, I'm going to wrap it up here and thanks for watching if you've tuned in and don't forget to like and subscribe if you haven't already as it helps push our videos out there more and obviously keeps us wanting to bring the longer form content out. Have a good weekend everybody and wish you
