Things Are NOT Working The Way We WantAdded:
Well, what we got going on when we had that flat tire last night? Come to find out, looks like one side of the bearings is out on the hub. So, there we go.
So, we're going to try to get this stuff off. See what we can figure out.
Eek.
Forgot to film last night. My battery died, but uh Cooper planted till like 12:30 a.m. last night, so it kind of got a little late on him. And then time to get home, eat supper. Well, I think Mama Cornstar brought out supper. I got to try to get this race out here.
What I'm trying to do, the bearing slips in here. I need to cut that race out of there, but it's kind of ground in. Hopefully, we didn't hurt anything. I'm trying to figure out the best way. I can't drain a lip on the backside to hardly touch.
Well, I don't know.
Huh.
Not too much, I don't think.
Zach just came in here and we determined and I don't know why I did not realize this.
We actually talked about it last night.
This is part of the outer race of the bearing that went kapooie.
It should look like this side.
And I didn't realize that, but uh that bearing race was slight in there. This is on the one side of the hub, but on the other side, I think the bearing was out for a while and it was just grinding away. It ate it all out cuz that should fit in to this side. So now we're up to finding a new hub plus the bearings.
So, in the meantime, I got a hold of the tire man and it's Sunday, so that makes it harder, too. Sunday. Sunday. Ooh, now ice cream sounds good. But being Sunday and everything, luckily the tire man is willing to put a new tire on. This is the tire that was going down the road.
Like Cooper said, it was probably rubbing something on the planter and went buoy. But we're going to go down and get a new tire right now from the tire man. So, we're going to load this up in the truck, run down to the tire, man, get a new tire. But being a Sunday, this is going to put a damper into a few things. Cooper knows a few of the guys at the local implement dealership. He's calling them to see if any of them would want to go in on a Sunday to see if they got the parts, but if they don't, we respect that, too, because it's their day off. But if they do, wow, that'd be fantastic. And we better make sure the torch is off. So, a lot of things I've been doing today on Sunday morning.
rushing around things just ain't working the way we want it. But that's part of farming, part of any job. Things sometimes don't go the way you want it. I was uh Oh, hold on just a second here. Trying to get thought of train. Oh jeez. Train of thought. Thought of train. Oh, need my water bottle. We got like a 30 minute drive here to go to the tire man. So, I'm going to bring some little drinks of water here just in case. But what I was going to say here, I'm tripping over everything here. Let me get my little buns.
Last night, Pete came over working on the Hegy sprayer. We had just put some new stuff on it and the new stuff wasn't working.
Who knows why them things happen, but uh get you out of the sun here.
But anyhow, talking to Pete last night, he's works on a lot of different things.
And Cooper had yesterday a young man by the name of Brian out. And Brian was trying to help him get his planter going. And just talking to Brian and Pete and some of these other guys. Well, a lot of you guys are running around keeping us farmers going, too. You guys are running around with your heads cut off right now. When we call, we forget.
Sometimes there's five, six, seven, 10 other people that are already called needing you guys. So, we got to remember as farmers, too, when we call them guys, they're trying as hard as they can and they're running ragged. We got to make sure we're talking to them very polite, very nice. Respect them. And if they say they can't get to us for a few days or actually, I hope not a few days, but sometimes that can happen. But for a few hours or a day, we got to remember we're not the only one running out here in the fields and other neighbors are going to.
Everybody is important. We got other things we can be doing and that's kind of why we got two sprayers and one breaks down. Hopefully, we can go for a while till they can get the other one going. So, anyhow, off to the tire man.
Same thing there. It's very, very nice of him to open shop on a Sunday morning to change my tires. Well, I forgot to bring you guys along with me, but uh we had to make a road trip.
My other hub I showed you was shot, so we had to run up to Waverly, Iowa.
Our local place had some hubs, but they weren't quite the right ones.
But anyhow, going through, we had to run up to Waverly. We're running through Waverly. I happened to drive by a Dairy Queen. The Dairy Queen started yelling at me, "Daddy Cornstar, please stop. Please stop. We want to see you." I don't know what all that was about, but I went ahead and stopped. Ended up getting a small vanilla malt. I wanted to test the ice cream, make sure it was still good.
Funny how that stuff traps you in quick.
I suppose we'll try that. I don't know.
That thing's falling off. You know, when you think about it, it's funny how these little boogers here hold all that weight of the planter.
I think we got her put together.
Well, there comes the 340 K tractor. That's Cooper driving this one. He just called me. I'm going to go put the tire back on the planter, but he ran out of seat.
Look at them big LSWs. Man, they were nice.
There's the 24 row white planter. You know, one nice thing about them LSW tires, the wide ones on the front, wide ones on the back. Really light on the field, light on compaction. A pretty nice unit.
Cooper's got a lot of lights on that tractor. Lot of lights on the planter.
So when he's out at night working, he's got a lot of lights. You know where he's at when you go by, that's for sure. Got a bunch of lights like that. Kind of a weird thing here right now. Now, the way the planter set overnight, it did its funky little funky dana dance or whatever you call it. I'm hoping I don't know, but I'm hoping I can get underneath that. Might have to jack it up a little bit. It's going to be close.
It's going to be a little tilted. See what we got that way.
Shoot, shoot, shoot.
I don't know. We're going to have to do some playing. Figure out how to get the planter back up, I guess. Boy, I don't know. Move a little rock.
I just figured out what's going on, why it's not going the way I wanted it to, and I'll show you here in a second.
We need to pull the stops. We could be here all day. Now, we should be able to get it to do what we want. Let's try it again, guys.
See, get the jack in there without falling apart. Had one of these one time when the handle fell off. Just about got my toes. So, I always remember that.
See if we can get this folded up quick.
And then we got to put Zach's gravel back. But hopefully she'll fold up.
Sometimes, like I said, it's got a mind of its beast.
We finally got things rolling.
Cooper is actually across the road starting to get lightly dark. So, I don't know. I'm hoping I don't know what time it is. Probably 9:00, 8:30 p.m., but I'm hoping to be able to do 30 40 acres yet tonight.
Just opening up the field. That always takes a little longer. What I mean by that, doing the inrows and everything.
It was kind of funny today and I forgot to bring the camera with me, but I made about an hour and 20 minute trip to go pick up parts. It is a Sunday.
I was really surprised for the whole hour and 15 hour 20 minutes. I only seen two guys out planting and one guy out spraying the whole trip. But now all at once, I see a bunch of neighbors coming out. It's hard to pick up Cooper over there.
can't pick them up. But anyhow, there's three neighbors over here running.
Cooper's running. I'm running. And I've seen on Snapchat a few other neighbors running. So, I don't know. Maybe there was some ball game or something going on today. But it's just kind of nice to see the lights out. Everybody running now.
Kind of makes you feel good out here. I don't think tonight's supposed to get as cold. It got up to about 72Β° today, which really felt nice. We need that heat. And then tomorrow, I think they're talking close to 80.
But then by the middle of the week, they're talking back in the 50 54Β° range, but not too long after that, back in the 70s. We just need some good sun, good heat. But it's springtime. We have no control over that. I'm going to make my phone call here in a little bit to Mother Nature, but not much we can do about any of that. I don't know if you can see me very good or not, but uh it's about 11:15 p.m.
I'll probably be running out of seed around 11:30 p.m. So, that'll be a good time to call it a night. Time I get filled back up and everything. It's going to get pretty late. And this field here, it's a lot of turning around. So, I don't want to get hung up somewhere and wish I would have waited till daylight. And I'm ready for a shower, floss my teeth, brush my teeth, and crawl in bed by Mama Cornstar because I'm getting tired. You can see how dark it is out here. But I'll show you something here. Taking my earplugs out.
You look way over there, you can see the moon.
Nice bright moon. Just take a moment.
Look at it.
Isn't it so pretty? See that bright light way over there? That's Cooper out in the hills right now. He's actually brighter than the moon.
There's the moon.
There's Cooper.
