I Spent a Day Experiencing Filipino Culture šµš
Added:The Philippines is home to some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world.
Exploring its islands, mountains, and natural beauty was one of the main reasons I came to Boho Island near Sabu.
After spending a few days on the island, I found myself craving a deeper experience to learn a little more about the friendly people and colorful culture that make this place unique. While riding around on my scooter, I came across a cultural learning center. My first thought was that this looked like the kind of place that could be a tourist trap, but I was curious enough to stop and see for myself. Over the next 30 minutes, you'll see all the things I got to learn and try. From rice pounding and weaving to roof making with local resources, testing the foods that locals eat and even busting a move with some traditional Filipino dancing.
Together, we're going to experience some of the culture here on this island.
Let's go and check it out.
>> Hello, >> how are you?
>> Fine.
>> Nectar.
>> Nectar.
>> Oh, nectar. What's that?
>> The the flower of the coconut.
>> Yeah. So that is the flower of >> That's different. That's different to coconut inside the coconut.
>> Yeah. Um the the coconut nectar came from the flower, the coconut that hadn't bloom yet. So they cut the tip of it and then get the nectar.
>> Wow.
>> Cook for 3 hours and then become sugar.
>> Yes.
>> Coconut like this. This one.
>> Yes.
>> You can try.
That's okay.
>> This is also an organic sugar.
>> Uh-huh.
>> W.
>> Oh, sweet.
>> It tastes like sugar, but coconut.
>> Sugar.
>> That's really good.
>> Like brown sugar.
>> Yeah. We also use that as a substitute product of brown sugar in coffee or cooking.
>> It's just in boho or you all of the Philippines.
>> Oh, really?
>> Also outside of the Philippines, we also have the koha sugar. So here we uh demonstrate how to how to to cook the coconut sugar.
>> Okay.
>> Yes.
>> This is cute.
>> I like this.
>> Yes. No glass.
>> No gas.
>> Just for a demo.
>> Just a tree.
>> Yeah.
>> So we also have the coconut wine. Have you tried coconut wine?
>> I haven't tried coconut wine.
>> Do you want to try?
>> Am I Can I drink it and drive?
>> Just uh just a little bit. You can try if you like. Yeah, I'll try some.
>> Okay. So, this is the traditional wine here in the Philippines. So, every occasions you always have this kind of wine.
>> So, it's a different from other wine mix >> similar to some vinegar kind of flavor too.
>> Yeah. Because become vinegar.
>> Okay.
>> Yeah. So, this h coconut wine it won't last long unlike the other wine. So, this kind of wine after 1 month it will become sour. Mhm.
>> And then we use that as a vinegar.
>> So maybe in the next week it will become vinegar.
>> Oh, really? So just last couple of weeks or something.
>> Yes.
>> Oh, interesting.
>> But we have two different kinds of wine.
We have the sweet wine and the >> strong wine. This is the strong. It has a 40 to 45% alcohol. And then we usually drink that with Pepsi or cola >> to make it sweet. And the other one is the tuba. We call the tuba. It has only 2% to 4% alcohol. M.
>> You drink this too?
>> Just the sweet wine. Not the >> strong wine. Sweet wine.
>> No more sweet wine.
>> Yeah.
>> Why?
>> Wow.
>> It's very hard to get the sweet wine.
So, it should be early in the morning.
Get and then display it here to make it sweet.
>> Oh, I see. I see.
>> Not only one day. Wo.
>> Yeah. One day. And then after at night it will become sour.
>> I see. Wow.
>> They have difference. This is the many uh distilled. This is distilled every day >> to have more alcohol.
>> Very cool.
>> And the virgin coconut.
>> Oh, this is the oil. Oh, that's nice.
>> Okay. Very cool.
>> All right.
>> So, this is what they uses for harvesting the coconut wine. They put it on their shoulder and climb to the coconut tree and put inside the coconut nectar.
>> Oh, really? Wow.
>> Yes. Handmade.
>> Wow.
>> Very systematic.
>> Have you tried that?
>> No. I tried climbing tree, but maybe just like this.
>> This high.
>> Wow. Hey. Oh, you're back.
>> We're lacking of stuff here.
>> Everywhere. Everywhere. You're here too.
>> Yeah.
>> Later she will go there.
>> Very fun.
>> So this is the traditional way of rice milling >> before the machines came here in the Philippines.
>> So these are the rice. So we sand dried them first like 2 days or 4 days. So we crack the hus and then hand pound them here. You can try.
>> I can touch it too.
>> Yes, sure.
>> Oh, it's very dried. Yes, it should be dried to silic.
>> Uhhuh. Oh, that's why everyone's drying it on the street now.
>> Yeah, the street.
>> Maybe not now, but Yeah, >> because street is much hotter than the sun.
>> Makes sense. In the sun.
>> Yes, you can try.
>> Okay, I'll try >> and then I'll take you out.
>> I'm just recording the whole thing.
>> Okay.
>> How long does this take?
>> Just a few minutes.
>> Few minutes.
If you do it uh harder and faster >> straight down like >> Yeah.
>> or sideways >> center.
>> Center.
>> Yeah.
>> Wow. I'm feel now.
>> No machine.
>> Yeah, that's true. Working so hard.
>> Yeah.
>> Wow.
>> And now you still doing this now?
>> Yes.
>> Still the same thing?
>> Yes. Then now, >> wow, Philippines is so traditional.
>> Yeah, especially a far from the machines in the mountains, they still do this kind of traditional way.
>> Wow. Really?
>> Yes. Uh, this process was used until 1980s here in the cities >> still in the mountains.
>> Yeah, still do this because they are far from the machines.
>> Machines here, uh, we have to pay.
>> Okay. You take your rice there and then >> Yes. Then pay then >> no pay.
>> Free paid.
>> Yeah.
>> It also has a benefits in your muscle.
>> For the muscles.
>> And then the last cleaning process. So we knowing.
>> Yes. We knowing.
>> Oh, >> and this is you're just taking away all of the >> Yes. The skin.
>> I see.
>> Yes. You want to try, sir?
>> Okay, I'll try. I think I'm going to throw it everywhere.
>> You just have to catch the rice.
>> Okay. Oh, please don't throw this over.
>> Yes. Good.
>> Yes.
Good. You're a professional, huh?
>> I can work here now. That's more stuff.
>> So, you get when you throw it, the wind takes it.
>> Yes.
>> Oh, this is like therapy.
>> Yeah. Yeah.
If you're stressed, you can go back here.
>> Yeah.
>> And do that.
>> Yeah. This is nice.
>> Yes.
>> The sound is nice, too.
>> Yeah.
>> I like this. This is good. Rice. Rice therapy.
>> Yes. Rice therapy.
>> And then separate.
>> Oh, this is expert level.
>> This is the rice ready for cook. And this one go back here and pan again.
>> I see. That's the rice we eat every day.
>> So it takes time. It does take time.
>> Yes.
>> Take time so that we can eat.
>> Yeah. And then you appreciate it. We appreciate it so much.
>> Hunger first then we eat a lot of >> Thank you, sir.
>> Thank you. I'll see you soon.
>> There.
So we also cultured cultured meal worms here. So meal worms are one of the edible insects that has a lot of protein. Have you tried an exotic food before?
>> I should try this now.
>> Yeah.
>> But >> is it alive or dead?
>> It's already fried. Fried.
>> Okay.
>> You can choose the alive or the fried ones.
>> Do you eat the live ones?
>> Not me. The other stuff.
>> Oh. Do you try it?
>> No.
>> Oh, >> the the stuff who eat this is not here.
>> Okay.
>> Yeah. You already ate that four times >> today?
>> No, >> just before.
>> Before.
>> So, this is your fried.
>> Come on.
>> But it's a bit burned.
>> Oh, okay.
>> Good for the heart.
>> M. It tastes good.
>> Yeah. Crunchy.
>> It's like the chips.
>> Yeah.
>> The chips. And >> it's a good snack.
>> You can also eat this while drinking the beer also. That's >> wine.
>> It's called pulutan.
>> Pulutan.
>> This one as well. The beetle. Yes.
>> You eat this.
>> No, they are only producing eggs to become meal worms.
>> So beetle, the darkling beetles produces eggs. Then the eggs will become meal worms. And then after 2 weeks >> they will become a pupa. So they should be transferred here. So look like this.
>> Mhm.
>> Looks like dead. But they are preparing to become a pupa. This is the pupa.
>> Okay.
Just like the life cycle of a butterfly.
>> Uhhuh.
>> And then after 3 weeks they will become completely a dartling beetles.
>> And we only give them vegetables. The siote >> m healthy diet.
>> Yeah. It's organic.
>> Oh, this is your life cycle here.
>> Yes. The life cycle.
>> Eggs, milkworm, pupa, beetle.
>> Wait, they don't. But mealworm is this one.
>> Yeah, this one.
>> But they don't make it past here. You eat them.
>> That's eggs. Mealworm.
>> Fried meal worm.
>> Maybe it here is this side. The fried meal worms. Then another.
>> Yeah. So next it's the end.
>> But your other stuff it finishes here.
>> Yeah. The mealwar because it goes fried.
They will die. Here you can touch.
Tashiers also eat the >> Oh, it's so smooth.
>> It feels nice.
>> Yeah, >> it's so um so gentle.
>> Gentle. But uh they might bite because meal worms eat everything.
>> Oh, okay.
>> Yeah, >> that's cute.
All right, we're going to eat you soon.
>> You're going to be be there soon.
>> Yes.
I like your your your um throne here.
That's nice. Big seat.
>> Thank you.

>> Okay.
>> It's a jelly. Looks like the jelly. So, it's ingredients are coconut milk, >> sugar.
>> Yeah. It's because of the powdered sticky rice.
>> Coconut.
>> Coconut milk, sugar, and the powdered sticky rice.
>> Powdered sticky rice.
>> Yeah.
>> It looks like this man. Okay, let's try it.
This is good. I've had this before.
>> Really?
>> Yeah. I know the flavor. I think in Australia.
>> Yeah. Uh it's the same >> the same in the They have this in like Filipino supermarket.
>> Ah, there in Australia. Also in Thailand they also have this Hongong maybe, but different names and maybe ingredients also.
>> Okay. It tastes really good. Straight through this.
>> I can put it here. So we cooked the calamay there but it's already done.
These are the freshly cooked. So if half of the ingredients we cook them for 3 hours 1 kilo 6 hours of cooking.
>> Okay.
>> Yeah. Continuously steering there.
>> Wow.
>> So much exercising in the Philippines.
>> Muscles. More muscles here.
>> Yeah.

>> 50 pesos. Okay. Okay. I'll think about that.
>> Okay. We got some rain now.
This is the experience center here.
We're on to weaving.
Good afternoon.
>> Hello.
>> The roof we uses here, they are made here. And this is also that traditional roof here in the Philippines. So before the iron sheet have been came here. So we use it.
>> Okay.
>> Yeah. This roof. So this is made from npa palm le.
>> Mhm.
>> So the npa palm trees outside looks like the coconut trees >> but na only grows in a watery areas. So they use the new >> I see.
>> Yeah. So this roof will last 5 years or 8 years.
>> 5 years. Wow.
>> But it also depends on the weather.
>> I see.
>> And you can try.
>> I just want to touch this first.
