[00:00:38]It was he who opened up the wilderness road to what is now the great state of Kentucky. [music] But was it he alone? No, there were others history has never recorded.

[00:00:50]Let us go back to those early days and to meet one, Hector Heathcoat.

[00:00:57]Though but a poor clerk, Hector never stopped [music] studying, hoping someday to become a pioneer. A true pioneer is always on the alert for trouble. His mind is quick, his eyes are sharp.

[00:01:12]>> [music] >> A true pioneer can cope with any emergency.

[00:01:20]Yes, sir, any emergency.

[00:01:25]>> [screaming] >> Then one day came Hector's big chance.

[00:01:37]I'm picking up some men and leaving on the morrow to open up a new trail.

[00:01:51]So Hector Heathcoat stayed up all night practicing pioneering.

[00:04:31]>> [music] >> Meanwhile, Boone and his party were pinned down while the enemy slowly, relentlessly advanced.

[00:04:41]On and on raced Heathcoat, the bear snapping AT HIS HEELS.

[00:04:49]>> [music] [music] [music] [music] >> THEN, JUST AS THE INDIANS WERE about to close in, [music] >> [music] [music] >> Yes, Daniel Boone, the great pioneer, opened up the wilderness road to Kentucky, but it was Hector Heathcote who frightened off the Indians and built a bridge that helped him on his way.
