A sobering reminder that terrain literacy is the only thing separating a scenic camp from a fatal oversight in the desert. This video effectively strips away thru-hiking romanticism to expose the lethal unpredictability of dry washes.

Day 4 | Glad I am Still Alive To Go Into Town| Solo CDT Thru Hike 2026Added:
[sighs] >> Good morning. I'm still alive and I'll tell you in a second why.
Good morning again.
Back on trail.
It was a nice 52° when I started and it's already 56 and I've only been hiking for a few minutes.
Woo! Okay, so let's talk about why I'm still alive. Of course I'm still alive.
Um and I kind of been contemplating whether to tell you guys because I already learned my lesson, right?
So, I know that some of you are going to still give me a hard time, but I already learned my lesson. I'm going to just have to pre-state that.
So, yesterday at the end of the day was a wind kind of craze. I don't even know.
Like it was just so crazy. It looked like there was rain in the distance and I texted Mountain Goat be like, "Hey, is there supposed to be some rain?"
And she's like, "Not really." And then she checked the weather channel side and she says, "Just a little bit, like a little a little one." I'm like, "Okay."
So, [snorts] I'm getting to the area where I want to camp and it's so windy. I wish I would have filmed it. I couldn't set up my tent at all.
So, then I go a little bit further and it's kind of like between the little bushes and I was like, "Okay, this is a better spot for the wind."
And so, I set up my tent.
Now, I had just crossed a wash and the comment said, "Right after the wash there's some good camping sites."
So, I was like, "Okay."
So, I'm thinking I am camped after the wash.
So, I set everything up.
Like I am exhausted. And then Mountain Goat asked me, "How many miles have you hiked?"
And then I was like, "Oh, let me check."
And then I'm looking at FarOut and I'm literally my spot is literally inside of the wash.
I'm like, "Oh my god.
I think I'm camped inside the wash."
Which doesn't make any sense because I had just crossed the divide and I was like, "There's no way I'm in the wash."
So, I go and ask Mountain Goat, "Can you please look if there's any big rain supposed to be happening overnight? Like 50 miles from now to cuz dry washes apparently can take you out even if there was rain miles away."
So, she's like, "No.
No big rain coming up."
Then I'm also sending her a video of where I'm camped. Uh dry bed?
Okay.
Me.
What do you think? You know, I'm not in the wash, but I'm like right next to it.
So, I looked like I was safe and I'm safe.
You know, I I survived. There was no rain, but my lessons learned is like you don't have to deal with washes on the other hikes, right? Or at least I never did on the PCT. So, I learned my lesson to make sure I'm not camped obviously in a wash. That's kind of obvious, but also even right next to it is probably not a good idea cuz you never know if there's going to be a flash flood.
I learned my lesson, guys.
I'm not going to camp in a wash again.
It's kind of like the same thing as when you hike on the AT and then you set up your camp and then you realize you put your tent up under a widowmaker. It's just like you learn your lesson. You're like, "Okay, next time I'm going to make sure that I'm not setting my camp up under a widowmaker."
I was lucky, of course.
So, I learned my lesson.
What's today's goal?
I have less than 15 miles to get to Lordsburg. That's still a big day for a town day, but I'm excited to get there.
I have a lot of things to do, but I'll try to film it and show you.
>> [music] >> Also, my sleeping pad did not deflate last night.
Not sure why. I guess it's maybe because of the clothes I had propped under.
Very strange.
Also, I heard some coyotes in the distance.
And yeah, I'm saying coyotes because all of y'all who say it's coyote doesn't make any sense. It's spelled c o y o t e.
Why it's a ca yote? That doesn't make any sense.
Also, they sounded different than the Florida ones.
I guess they have a different accent or a dialect. These ones sounded way more like hyenas.
I don't know. Maybe it wasn't a coyote or coyote. I don't know.
It sure sounded like them.
Hanging out, howling at the moon. Had a beautiful sky, too. Once the wind stopped howling.
I guess this one's called Pyramid Peak.
I mean, that checks.
>> [music] [music] [music] [music] >> Hello.
Hello.
Hello.
How you doing?
You know how you have in some scary movies just like people standing still staring at you?
All right, I'm at the water cache just taking a break, making my feet chill a little bit. I have 6 to 7 miles to town left. There's an option to do a road walk and I'm contemplating that. It takes away a little bit of mileage as well as, you know, a little bit of this constant stuff. So, I'm thinking about it, but I'm resting my feet first.
It's 9:52 and 6 to 7 miles left.
I'm going to try the road walk. So, this is the road walk for now.
I'll try to keep myself under control.
