They hired Stu as an IT guy to help them out with [music] computer stuff. He told his family, "I think I'll probably end up with about 40 seconds of the final movie."

[00:00:35]He is the [laughter] whole plot and he didn't know.

[00:00:39]>> [music] >> Welcome back, Movie Listerners. My name is John and I'm a filmmaker. My name is Matt and I'm a doctor. The Movie List is a list of 100 movies that I've never seen before. John has curated these movies for me because they're his favorites.

[00:01:01]And this week we are covering What We Do in the Shadows.

[00:01:04]That's right. Everyone's favorite fantasy film that was shot exclusively in New Zealand. Obviously, when you hear that, the first thing you think is What We Do in the Shadows.

[00:01:15]>> in the Shadows, of course.

[00:01:17]Um no, but you know, I think the What We Do in the Shadows TV show, we're going to talk about it some of the episode, but probably the most true to the movie show that's ever Maybe that's that's ever been adapted for television. Uh I mean, I'm sure a part of that is because Taika Waititi and especially uh Jemaine Clement was involved, you know, throughout the process, but uh I don't know.

[00:01:46]>> [laughter] >> It's Jemaine Clement.

[00:01:49]What? Who?

[00:01:51]You said Jemaine. Yeah, his name is Jemaine. Jemaine?

[00:01:58]Jemaine? His has an accent. How is that possible? I >> [laughter] >> I've been dude, I've been following him for like I don't know, 15 years since early Flight of the Conchords days.

[00:02:09]His name is Jermaine? Jermaine, yeah.

[00:02:12]>> I've only ever heard him say it. And so Hello, my I'm Jermaine. I just thought his name was Jermaine and he was saying it with the Kiwi accent. Jermaine, wow, that blows my mind actually. Okay, Jermaine Clement. Am I saying that right? Is it like Clemen?

[00:02:30]I don't know. Well, Jermaine Clement.

[00:02:33]Jermaine, that that actually blows my mind.

[00:02:36]Um, well, wow, that's crazy. Um Fun facts, you know, this is why you listen to the Movie List guys. You learn things like this that you can really hold over your friends. [00:04:22]DO THE DO THE WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS IS A mockumentary horror comedy about a group of vampire roommates living together in modern-day Wellington, New Zealand.

[00:04:34]Viago, Vladislav, Deacon, and the ancient Peter deal with everyday struggles of undead life.

[00:04:43]Paying rent, doing chores, getting into nightclubs, and finding victims without making too much of a mess.

[00:04:50]When they turn a young man named Nick into a vampire, their secretive world gets dragged into the modern age, forcing the group to deal with new technology, vampire politics, and a surprisingly wholesome friendship with Nick's human friend, Stu. [music] You will not eat Stu, and you will not eat the camera guy. Maybe one camera guy.

[00:05:10]>> guy?

[00:05:13]All right, Jemaine.

[00:05:16]That's going to bother me. That's It's really going to stick with me for like the next >> [laughter] >> few weeks. Thinking back all the times.

[00:05:21]Anyway, I digress. Matt, first thoughts on the film original film adaptation What We Do in the Shadows?

[00:05:31]Right. Um so, I watched the show first before I watched the movie. And you're right, it's like absolutely true to the movie. Uh it feels like just another episode of the show. Right, like a long episode. Yeah. Exactly. It like that it just jives. The feel is exactly the same. So, they replicated it perfectly.

[00:05:49]Um this is probably my favorite type of movie where like it's goofy and it's silly and it's not taking itself seriously and and everything in the whole movie start to finish is a joke.

[00:06:03]Yeah, like everything is funny.

[00:06:06]Um and I think the funniest thing in the whole movie is not like a joke that's said.

[00:06:11]It's it's just that Peter is like a Nosferatu >> [laughter] >> He's just rooming with these other normal-looking vampires.

[00:06:21]>> [laughter] >> He's got these giant fangs and uh that it's such a funny gag.

[00:06:27]Is is Peter going to be joining us? No, he's 8,000 years. He's not coming to the meeting. [laughter] He's 8,000 years old.

[00:06:39]It's just so good. You have you have a bunch of really great characters and the whole movie centers around their interactions.

[00:06:45]And like it almost wouldn't matter if this whole movie took place in one room, you know?

[00:06:50]Just cuz like that what they're doing doesn't matter so much as who they are.

[00:06:55]Um and I love that. I love that kind of thing. It just every every line in the whole movie you can laugh at.

[00:07:03]So, I mean I I loved it. This was a great one. One of my favorites so far just as far as like pure enjoyability. I watched it twice like back-to-back.

[00:07:12]Right.

[00:07:13]It's it's a very fun one. I love that.

[00:07:15]Yeah, I mean same. It's it's a movie that I you know, certain moments in a movie jump out. I remember seeing this movie probably I don't know, maybe 20 2016 around there.

[00:07:28]Um and uh you know, when it come out in the states. I I again like I had mentioned before, I was a big fan of Flight of the Concords. So, I just saw it because it was like, all right, the Flight of the Concords guy is doing a movie about vampires. That seems fun. It's kind of an office documentary style, which I also fan of that format. Uh but the moment when they're when they're having the fight in the like in the flat meeting. We'd all do our jobs starting with a certain Deacon. I WILL DO MY DISHES. I'LL DO THEM.

[00:08:02]ME AND MY WIFE LIKE LITERALLY WE WE HAD to pause it cuz we were laughing so hard that it was just so unexpected. It's so funny. Um I mean I'm sure you can tell from the vibe of it, right? You have the kind of the office vibe. When you put genius comedians in the room, good stuff's going to happen.

[00:08:18]Um so there was a script that Jemaine and Taika Waititi had had been working on they made they made a short film when they were in college of this same concept and then they worked on a script for about 10 years. Uh took them about 10 years to write a full-length script.

[00:08:35]They said they had like 200 pages.

[00:08:37]Uh and then when they showed up they scrapped the whole thing and decided literally just to improv this entire movie. They're the only ones on set the entire time who had read the script uh because they wanted everything to truly feel like a documentary where nobody knew it was happening. Right? So they ended up filming 195 hours of footage uh and took them a year to cut that down to the 86 minutes that that we see in the movie.

[00:09:06]What John just just a a a question. Yeah. Like I don't I don't have any concept of what's normal. So like what what would you typically shoot for a movie of that length?

[00:09:18]86 minutes if you're shooting one camera, right? 86 minutes maybe 10 hours.

[00:09:26]10 to 15 hours on a you know a scripted movie. Depends on certain directors, you know, they want to take a bunch of takes. Certain directors want to have 20 different angles. It depends on how complicated the movie is. You know, but you're talking like usually it's probably 20 or 30 to 1.

[00:09:42]Right? In that kind of ratio, right? So, if you're talking about So, maybe you know, maybe a bit longer. Maybe you're talking um a 2-hour movie you know, maybe 40 hours. Right? This is 195.

[00:09:55]Right? But, you're talking multiple cameras, two, three cameras, true documentary style. They don't stop rolling. In fact, at one point they said there's a 30-second scene that they had set up. They said basically, "Here's the idea of the scene." Uh and they went on for 22 minutes. Right? So, they truly just hired comedians, put them at their best, and let them, you know, flow. But, there was also some fun to it. So, I don't know if you know this, but Stu, right? The guy who played Stu, their IT guy, uh was actually their buddy Stu Rutherford. This is my friend Stu.

[00:10:28]He He works with computers and stuff. Uh who they went to college with. And I'm sure it's not surprising to you that Stu is not an actor.

[00:10:36]Uh but, the extent that they put Stu in the movie, he did not know. They hired Stu as an IT guy to help them out with computer stuff on [laughter] the set and said, "Hey, do you mind if we put you in in a couple scenes?" He's like, "Sure, what do I say?" And they said, "Oh, you know, whatever they say to you, just say whatever you would respond as yourself."

[00:10:55]Um but, so much footage was shot, he told his family, "Uh yeah, I'm going to be in the movie, but I'm more of a background actor. I think [clears throat] I'm probably going to be in 40 seconds." He said, "I think I'll probably end up at about 40 seconds of the final [laughter] movie." And he didn't find out until he got to Sundance. And he saw his face on the poster that he's [laughter] like the main character of the movie.

[00:11:20]He is the whole plot. And he didn't know.

[00:11:24]Because so much stuff was happening and they just kept throwing him [laughter] in scenes. I think Taika Waititi and Jemaine figured out early on that he is hilarious as a straight man such as putting him in every scene made it like 10 times funnier from a contrast standpoint. And so they just they just started screw the script.

[00:11:44]They scrapped it and they just started putting him in every scene from that point and they're like he's the movie now and they basically rewrote the movie around Stu who's not an actor and was not even supposed to be in the movie in the first place.

[00:11:58]Which to me makes it like a 100 times funnier. That's freaking great.

[00:12:03]>> [laughter] >> He didn't know. He didn't know he was going to be like a major actor in the movie. Can you imagine that? Can you imagine like thinking you're a background actor actor and then going to the premiere and finding out like you're the star?

[00:12:16]>> [laughter] >> You're on the poster you think you're an extra and you're the main guy.

[00:12:20]>> Literally. Literally he said people were coming up to him and like you're Stu.

[00:12:24]He's like, how do you know who I am?

[00:12:26]>> [laughter] >> He was like trying to excuse like no, no, no, I'm not I'm like barely in the movie. They're like no, we've seen it already. You're the star of the show.

[00:12:35][laughter] I love that. That must be a crazy experience. So now I'm going to wake up my flatmates. Wake up.

[00:12:46]Wake up everyone.

[00:12:48]Okay.

[00:12:53]Oh.

[00:13:06]I love how each of the vampires are like very obviously pointing to a like traditional vampire movie.

[00:13:16]Like you had mentioned Nosferatu Peter obviously is Nosferatu which is hilarious.

[00:13:22]Viago is Tom Cruise's character in Interview with a Vampire. Right? So, he's kind of okay fashioned after him. Deacon is like the '80s bad boy in The Lost Boys, right? So, he's like Kiefer Sutherland in The Lost Boys.

[00:13:38]Vlad is Gary Oldman's Dracula, you know, in in Bram Stoker's Dracula.

[00:13:45]And kind of extra fun fact there, uh he is, you know, he's Vlad the Meer and he he loves to poke people. So, he is like, "I am Vlad the Meer the poker."

[00:13:54]Vladislav. Vladislav, thank you.

[00:13:57]Vladislav the poker. I got his name wrong in two different ways now.

[00:14:00]>> Or or yeah, sorry. Actually, I got it wrong, too. It's Vladislav. Vladislav.

[00:14:04][laughter] Vladislav the poker, um which is actually based on on Vlad the Impaler.

[00:14:12]Who Vlad the Impaler is the original Dracula.

[00:14:16]So, they we get the idea of Dracula from Vlad Vlad the Impaler, who I think his name was like Vlad Dracula, um from Transylvania, which is now I think it's now modern-day Romania.

[00:14:29]Maybe uh if I'm not mistaken. I know we have some fans in Romania from the Vorat episode who reached out to us. So, shout out Romania. Yeah, shout out Romania. [laughter] >> you guys are staying safe out there.

[00:14:41]Yeah, I actually I read something just by happenstance this week about Vlad the Impaler. And and I I don't know if it's true or not. I didn't research it beyond just reading the post, but somebody was saying that people thought that he could transform into a bat because his his troops were fighting a battle and they retreated over this hilltop at at dusk or like at sundown.

[00:15:03]And so, like the enemy pursued them over the hill and they couldn't see anything cuz the sun was in their eyes. And then they released a bunch of rabid bats.

[00:15:11]And and like so, they thought that they had turned into bats and then like the bats bit a bunch of them and they all went rabid. That [snorts] makes sense.

[00:15:19]Yeah. I mean, sounds made up. They really took some took some leaps in logic back then. They're all bats. He must have become a bat.

[00:15:30]Cuz they couldn't see them anymore. That makes sense. Where'd bats come from? Can you explain that, John?

[00:15:35]How else do you explain that? I can't. I I thought it was because I heard because he dipped his bread in blood of his enemies and that's why that's kind of turned into Dracula drinking blood. They really took some leaps. They took some uh >> [laughter] >> Yeah. He probably had uh iron deficiency anemia and had pica from it.

[00:15:52]So, you you eat like dirt and stuff.

[00:15:56]To get the >> list. The movie list. With the doctor.

[00:16:00]I am a doctor. I'm not a urologist much to that one guy's chagrin in [laughter] the comment section, but I I am an actual medical doctor, so sorry it's not cool like urology. Yeah.

[00:16:12]I thought urology, isn't that just like a a hobby at this point? Isn't that like Because what you kind of just do on It's just like a It's like a side project.

[00:16:19]Yeah, I mean, not to throw too much shade on urology. We need urologists, all right, but I mean, never mind.

[00:16:27]>> [laughter] [music] [music] >> One of the the little nuances about I thought was really funny is that they're all terrible at playing instruments.

[00:16:44]>> [laughter] >> There's one scene where it shows them all playing instruments and they're all terrible and they're all like you know, several hundred years old.

[00:16:53]Right. How how could you be bad at an instrument when you have nothing but time? Yeah, right.

[00:16:59]I thought that was a funny little part.

[00:17:00]>> The instruments, the drawing, they're not great at drawing. Like Right. They don't have TV at this point. They don't have technology. So, like what have they been doing?

[00:17:09]Right.

[00:17:10]>> [laughter] >> Uh and then also funny like one thing I never really thought about with vampires like we all know they don't have a reflection.

[00:17:18]Right. But, I never thought about that being like inconvenient to them.

[00:17:22]Right. [laughter] They don't know what they look like. So, they're like drawing pictures of each other.

[00:17:27]>> [laughter] >> This is what you look like.

[00:17:28]Dude, the montage of the clothes is so funny.

[00:17:31]They're just like trying to look all hot, and then they don't know how to how to wear clothes. Cuz they don't know what they look like.

[00:17:37]They haven't seen each They haven't seen themselves in like thousands of years.

[00:17:42]Hello, ladies.

[00:17:46]That's one of my favorite lines in the whole movie. Deacon says, When you become a vampire, you become very sexy.

[00:17:51]And he's like, Obviously. [laughter] I love that uh One of my I like one of my favorite lines around that is when they're like talking They're like, you know, Viago's kind of talking about all the different ones. And he's talking about Deacon. He's like, "Deacon, he's like kind of the young bad boy of the group." And it cuts to him, and it says, "Deacon, 183 years old."

[00:18:14]>> [laughter] >> Like, he's the young, dangerous one.

[00:18:17]He's 183.

[00:18:19]I relative to the rest of them, you know. I know. I know. Yeah, so I think um So, yeah, Viago, which is Taika Waititi's character, is 379.

[00:18:30]Vladislav the Poker, Jemaine, is 870.

[00:18:35]Deacon the young bad boy is 183. And then Peter is 8,000.

[00:18:42]>> [laughter] >> That's so old. When he wakes him up, and he's like, "Maybe I could bring a broom, and you could clean up a little bit." It seems I got Oh, it's a spinal column. Yeah.

[00:18:55]>> [laughter] >> Okay, and he just gives him a whole chicken, like a live chicken. [laughter] He just eats the chicken.

[00:19:04]Oh, man. There's so many little good bits in there. Um My one of my favorite lines in it is just it Jemaine Vlad's line of, "We're vampires. We don't put down towels."

[00:19:15]He's like asking him to Next time he >> [laughter] >> You know, eats somebody on his couch, yeah, and the blood goes everywhere.

[00:19:23]Could you put down some towels maybe next time?

[00:19:27]And then when he does do that, he was putting down all these newspapers.

[00:19:31]>> [laughter] >> And it still ends up like a huge disaster.

[00:19:36]Yeah. He's trying to make it really nice for them cuz it's their last moment on earth. So, he's like >> Right. playing instruments for them and stuff. Right. Funny. I mean, I think like this obviously came out way after The Office, right? So, there is like tons of just fun stuff in there, but it's still very original. Uh and the show, like you were mentioning before, the show really continues on.

[00:19:59]Uh you know, I think in the show when you have Nadja and Laszlo um and and then um Nandor the the the the Relentless, which is one of my favorite like jokes in any show ever. When he's the news, he's like You're like, "What's your name?" He's like, "Nandor the Relentless." She's like, "Nandor de Laurentiis?" I'm here with a local resident who has been watching the situation closely. His name is Nandor Nandor the Relentless. Nandor de Laurentiis. Now, Nandor, you live in this neighborhood, correct? Yes, that's right, Joy. And I do. In that house just over there with my friends.

[00:20:39]It's fun.

[00:20:41]>> [laughter] >> And then it just blazes at the bottom of the screen. That's such a funny >> [laughter] >> But the I think the new addition of the emotional vampire, Colin Robinson, uh Mark Proksch Proksch, and I always forget how to say his name, Proksch, I think.

[00:20:59]Um genius. Perfect. It's just absolutely genius, right? Cuz it takes all of this level of like the practicality like if you were a vampire, you forget that your life would just be so boring, right? And then to the added level of we all know emotional vampires, right?

[00:21:16]We all know those guys in our lives who like they corner you and you're like, "Oh gosh." Um so it's just endless jokes. Um so like I was trying to find like what I thought was the funniest Colin Robinson thing and in my research in this uh this I won't take credit for it. This Redditor um minus numbers found something incredible. This incredible theory I want to share with you. So here is this fan theory about Colin Robinson from What We Do in the Shadows. So there's an episode in the first season where he's reading his his journal and one of the fans took a screenshot of the journal and zoomed in on it and it says, "On the subway today I went up to start a conversation. I made small talk as usual, gave him the impression that I was a lonely man talking about the weather and other things and this man tried to be pleasant and accommodating, but I could tell his head was hurting from my banality. Suddenly he threw up all over me which was great. I pretended not to be pleased and the man couldn't stop apologizing and then it was like he couldn't stop laughing.

[00:22:19]I a lot of these John Does out there, if you drain them enough, you can feel the moment when they finally snap and you've broken their minds."

[00:22:29]So what he did is he went and found the line of John Doe in Seven and David Fincher's Seven um Morgan Freeman's character finds John Doe's journal and it says On the subway today a man came up to me to start a conversation.

[00:22:47]He made small talk, lonely man talking about the weather and other things.

[00:22:51]I tried to be pleasant and accommodating, but my head began to hurt from his banality.

[00:22:56]I almost didn't notice it had happened, but I suddenly threw up all over him.

[00:23:01]He was not pleased.

[00:23:04]And I couldn't stop laughing.

[00:23:06]So, this fan has connected that Colin Robinson is directly responsible for the events of Seven.

[00:23:15]>> [laughter] >> He caused John Doe.

[00:23:21]Which is so that's incredible. It's so incredible. I love that. Nobody's stopping you from tying your story to another one that way. Literally.

[00:23:29][laughter] Literally. Why not?

[00:23:30]Especially Colin Robinson. And and as if he's not the gift that keeps on giving.

[00:23:36]We talked about the Seven thing, right?

[00:23:37]We talked about like the news Delarentis.

[00:23:42]Do you know about Mark Proksch who's like the beginning of his career?

[00:23:46]I don't know anything about him.

[00:23:47]>> he did The Office before this before What We Do in the Shadows, he did The Office and he did What was the the Breaking Bad spin-off?

[00:23:57]Um Uh >> Oh Better Call Saul. Yeah. He did Better Call Saul and he did The Office, right?

[00:24:03]Before that, he ran a film festival called the the Found Footage Film Festival, which is basically just people bring like funny news bloopers. It's all the stuff like you and I love. Right?

[00:24:13]So, he was like, "Why can't we create these?" He's a comedian. And so, what he started doing was he created a character named Kay Stras.

[00:24:22]And Kay Stras goes around the country, specifically the Midwest, and goes on news stations and is a professional yo-yoist who's trying to spread the news to high schoolers about being green and try to save global warming.

[00:24:39]So, I went ahead and did my own Found Footage Film Festival and I cut together for you, Matt, and for our audience a hyper like a just a supercut of the best Kay Stras moments I could find. Oh boy.

[00:24:54]With us this morning Kay Stras, a yo-yo professional. Kind of an interesting line of work, to say the least.

[00:25:00]>> medicine schools this week, teaching kids about being green. How do you combine going green with a yo-yo?

[00:25:08]Um honestly, it's it's been kind of a struggle to get into some of the schools. Mhm. But uh it's a shame cuz [music] um they do they pay really well. Basically, the kids I think there's something to be said about how kids are brought up these days. And I come from a home that believed in spanking. Mhm. Okay? They'll be laughing so hard.

[00:25:33]>> They think he's real, by the way.

[00:25:34]>> Don't even get to >> think he's a real professional yo-yoist.

[00:25:37]Tell us a little bit about how you got started to be a yo-yo master. Uh honestly, I am just a 35-year-old kid at [music] heart, you know? Uh twice divorced.

[00:25:49]I have no kids. Uh I don't have a girlfriend. Don't want one. My parents uh live [laughter] in Denver. They just got divorced.

[00:25:57]>> I understand that actually you lost a friend just recently. Had a um a he is uh Garth Brooks uh Eric Stringer.

[00:26:08]>> [music] >> The Garth Brooks of uh yo-yoing was a mentor, not literally, but he was a class act. And so, [laughter] I mean, can we just take a second of silence?

[00:26:19]>> If you want to, sure.

[00:26:23]But uh I was looking the Grim Reaper in his eyes, and I was at a door, and there was it was locked, and I needed a key, [music] and this was the doorknob, literally.

[00:26:34]>> It was a jet ski accident. Ooh, okay. Well, >> ski accident.

[00:26:38]>> news. Uh I am This may literally be the last time you see me in this shirt.

[00:26:44]>> [music] >> Uh they are going in a different direction, and it's a direction without me. And am I angry about this, Kyle?

[00:26:51]Yes, I am. It has a lot [laughter] of ups and downs and >> [laughter] >> your typical yo-yoing. What is it cuz I'm just twirling it, but when you get the kids their yo-yos and they start getting Uh they start It's probably my dad and I are going to get So, you get that one going.

[00:27:20]Oh. All right.

[00:27:22]>> [laughter] >> Yeah. Yeah.

[00:27:24]And then uh we're going and we get worrying and we're like, "All right, everybody. Let's take it down to the ground and we'll get into a Huey."

[00:27:33]And we get going.

[00:27:35]Oops.

[00:29:52]Look, they are worms on our plates.

[00:29:55]There's worms wiggling around on my plate. So, after everybody gets sort of introduced in that first section of the movie, then the plot really starts to pick up when they're trying to get some people over to their house. So, they have their familiar uh bring two people who she thinks are virgins.

[00:30:13]>> [laughter] >> Neither of them are.

[00:30:15]Uh and she's like "You were her virgin back in high school when we were dating."

[00:30:20]>> [laughter] >> It was like "I was 12 years old. I was 12."

[00:30:25]I think um my wife told me her favorite Her favorite character in the movie was Jackie, who was their familiar.

[00:30:33]>> [laughter] >> Because like she's like just doing all this work for them, but she's like with the hopes of being a vampire. And then they go to her house, like Deacon goes to her house, and she has like a full family.

[00:30:44]Right?

[00:30:44]>> [laughter] >> She has like four kids and a husband.

[00:30:47]And like she's just like wants to just leave them and become a vampire.

[00:30:54]Right? And there's a >> like a buddy. There's this scene where she's like giving her husband like a grocery list, you know?

[00:31:00]>> [laughter] >> And they tell each other that they love each other, and then she says, "But I am your master now."

[00:31:08]>> [laughter] >> And then she becomes the vampire.

[00:31:12]See, her husband becomes her familiar.

[00:31:15]>> [laughter] >> That's so funny.

[00:31:18]My husband is my familiar, so there's been a dynamic shift there.

[00:31:23]I love you. I love you, too. All right.

[00:31:27]But I am your master.

[00:31:29]Okay?

[00:31:30]>> [music] >> But um so basically so there's where we have this character Nick who uh goes to this dinner party, and then they serve him some bisquetti, and make him think it's worms with hypnosis, and a couple other things.

[00:31:48]>> [snorts] >> And then he tries to escape, and when he's trying to get out of that house, that scene is like crazy intense. Like out of nowhere.

[00:31:56]Yeah, I know. It's like He's like he should like panic a little bit because he can't get out of this house. And the the vampires are like right behind him.

[00:32:04]And it's such a weird a weird scene because you have these vampires who are just like being goofy and like, "Oh!"

[00:32:12]>> [laughter] >> And he's like running for his life.

[00:32:14]He's like, "Your penis is now a snake."

[00:32:17]>> [laughter] [gasps] >> But like He's like, "I got to go. My penis is a snake."

[00:32:24]>> [laughter] >> So he tries to get out of the house.

[00:32:27]And uh and then he makes it out barely, and then Peter gets him.

[00:32:33]And um then we later find out that he was turned into a vampire by Peter and that whole segment >> [laughter] >> where he's talking about becoming a vampire is so freaking funny, man.

[00:32:45]He's the He's like "First of all, Peter is like I woke up and Peter offered me some blood and I thought this is just a German thing."

[00:32:55]>> [laughter] >> He says he goes home.

[00:33:00]>> [laughter] >> Anyway, he goes to the doctor who's like baffled, clearly. He's got this huge gash in his neck.

[00:33:07]>> [gasps] >> And uh he says that he gets sick after he gets bit. He says it's like a flu except my eyes would bleed heaps.

[00:33:17]>> [laughter] >> He says, "You know, hot and cold and bloody eyes and flying and stuff.

[00:33:24]>> [laughter] >> He's like in the corners."

[00:33:28]He goes cold? He's sweating it out. Uh and then like his reflection he's starting to lose his reflection and so it's like delayed. I thought that [laughter] was a really cool way of illustrating that. Yeah.

[00:33:39]Um and then they introduce like they go out on their first like night of the town. Right. Right on the town where they go to the vampire bar or whatever.

[00:33:47]But Nick, because he's like a a modern man like knows people so he can get them into like actual clubs not just the vampire one Right. that nobody's in.

[00:33:57]Um and then he introduces them to Stu who's his buddy. Yeah. And that introduction is like it's way funnier than it lets on.

[00:34:05]So like the first time I watched it I was like, "Okay, whatever." The second time I watched it I was like I almost peed my pants laughing.

[00:34:11]>> [laughter] >> He's like So he hypnotizes him like, "You can't hear me."

[00:34:15]And then he's like "He has no idea how bad I want to eat him.

[00:34:19]>> [laughter] >> Just look at him. He's the reddest guy I know.

[00:34:24]His face is all flushed.

[00:34:26]It really, really sucks that I can't eat him.

[00:34:30]I just want to like look at him. He's the weirdest guy I know.

[00:34:37]He's the weirdest [laughter] guy I know.

[00:34:39]You got to watch it another time now that you know that that Stu didn't know what was going on at all. Right. So [laughter] that's why his lines are all just like he's just very awkward because like he didn't they didn't give him any lines. They like they would throw him lines sometimes that would make sense.

[00:34:53]He didn't know what was going on. He thought he was a background actor. They gave him jobs to do on set as the IT guy.

[00:35:00]>> [laughter] >> Which is so funny.

[00:35:05]That's just very funny.

[00:35:07]I love there's the the you know going back to the the when they're chasing Nick and they're trying to corner him in the house. I love how it like starts scary and then just gets like progressively more ridiculous. Like it's actually kind of like a horror vampire thing and then you got like Vlad's face on a cat for some reason. [laughter] And then he goes in that room. You have like the slow turn, you know, where it's usually in horror movies whenever the camera turns one way, you know the frame back this way, right? And so I'm like oh here it goes the jump scare and then Deacons inside his backpack and he reaches outside of his backpack and he's calling out.

[00:35:47]I just so funny. I didn't notice he was in the [laughter] backpack. He's inside the backpack.

[00:35:55]Oh man, low key honestly like this movie's like some of their practical effects and like special effects really good.

[00:36:03]Yeah, it does it like it kind of like it's almost like a new type of genre stuff because like some of their effects in this stuff is like better than most horror movies.

[00:36:14]Hmm. You know, like they feel more real.

[00:36:16]Right.

[00:36:18]I feel like doing this sort of like hybrid. Like it's a it's a horror motif and nothing about it is really horror.

[00:36:24]You know, but like the setting is.

[00:36:26]Right. And so they get to kind of use a lot of the I don't know. I don't know how to put this I know it wasn't a big budget. I I know it wasn't a big budget. Um short of like It's like a lot of horror stuff can get away with being kind of ham-fisted.

[00:36:39]You know, like it's it's it's not very nuanced. It's just kind of clunky, but it works because of the genre. I feel like they kind of are able to shoehorn a comedy into that environment and it just it just freaking works. It really works.

[00:36:53]>> don't understand it.

[00:36:54]>> Yeah, $1.6 million budget.

[00:36:57]Really? I mean like Really impressive.

[00:36:59]>> Shoestring. Shoestring. I mean, I know it's like mostly him and his friends. So like when you get comedians like that who can just go um you know, obviously you have Taika Waititi, uh Jemaine um Jemaine coming from Flight of the Conchords, Taika having a great career outside of this of writing, directing. Um went on to do Thor uh Ragnarok.

[00:37:25]Which honestly is probably top three favorite Marvel movies for me.

[00:37:29]Uh I I just watched it the other I'm going through my own movie list with my daughter my have a 10-year-old daughter and we're going through our own movie list. We're going through the MCU right now in order.

[00:37:38]>> [laughter] >> Uh we I do I was cackling at it. Taika actually >> He plays uh I forget the guy's name, the rock. What's up, bro? Hey, Korg is Taika Waititi.

[00:37:50]Um it's just it's so good. He he really honestly I think it you know, if you put it back in that time where the MCU was, it it was it was slogging a little bit.

[00:38:02]Um and especially Thor, you know.

[00:38:06]The Thor one was okay. Thor two was bad.

[00:38:11]Just was not good.

[00:38:13]>> Thor you know, and so Ragnarok I think with that opening scene with you know, the lightning, AC/DC, um it made it feel like a fan like a comic book. It made it feel like a comic book, which seems obvious, right? Like why would you make a Marvel movie not feel like a comic book? Yeah, like none of them had thought to do that though. None of them had thought to take Thor, the god of thunder, who is not just a comic book character. They got to understand from the fan stand of standpoint, this is not just a comic book character.

[00:38:51]It's a specific type of comic book fan character. Of we did Bill and Ted's last week.

[00:38:58]Thor was a Bill and Ted comic book character. Thor was the weirdos who also love Iron Maiden and love AC/DC and love rock and roll, um but are they're not they're not nerds, but they're also not jocks, you know, and I feel like you and I kind of like landed there. We were in a band. Um I played football and like hung out with those guys, but we weren't really either of those things. You probably were on the nerd nerd side, no offense. How dare you?

[00:39:25]>> [laughter] >> Um just from a grade standpoint, I was more on the jock stand you know, side of the fence just from a grade standpoint.

[00:39:35]>> [laughter] >> I got like a 1.7 GPA in freshman year, and so that checks out. But we all you know, we kind of were more in that like we're somewhere in between, but we're like the guys who love music, we love rock and roll, we love band stuff, but we also love comic books and movies and and uh Taika brought that and really kind of injected life back into um the Marvel series and and I don't think he did another one unless I'm mistaken, uh but that like his impact just from Ragnarok carried through the series. He reinvented Thor in a way that Thor went from like my least favorite character to like my favorite character.

[00:40:16]Right. He became funny.

[00:40:18]He became funny and lovable, you know, and earnest and like the all those things that you need in that kind of character and uh another fun fact about this, uh Stu Rutherford, who played I think I'm saying his name right, uh who's Stu in this movie, um designed it was actually an IT guy, an actually software engineer, uh designed the lighting system in that movie that they used uh in that beginning scene with fighting Ragnarok uh where Valkyrie is, you know, flying through the sky riding a horse, the light is going all around her. Uh Stu designed the light system that they used in that movie, uh which is incredible by the way. It's beautiful. Yeah, way to go, Stu. [laughter] Good job, Stu. So, he's not good for just, [clears throat] you know, saving this universe. He's also saving the MCU.

[00:41:08]So, Stu is technically in the MCU along with Bill and Ted.

[00:41:12]>> And his superpower is being the reddest guy.

[00:41:15]>> [laughter] >> Exactly.

[00:41:20]The uh after after Nick becomes a vampire, one of the things I like about how they make like vampire culture is it's just so bizarre. It's like these people are immortal, you know, so they've been around forever, hundreds of years, you know, so like what do you do on a Tuesday night when you're 800 years old, you know?

[00:41:41]>> Right. Right. Right.

[00:41:41]>> And so, [snorts] >> [clears throat] >> there's this scene where Deacon is just dancing, he's like putting on a show for for Vlad and uh and Viago. He's just like doing this crazy dance to this wild music, by the way.

[00:41:57]>> [laughter] >> And then Nick shows up and like he's still trying to learn how to fly, and so like he struggles to get in the window for like a minute.

[00:42:05]And I was like, "Why don't you just take the door?" He's like, "I can fly."

[00:42:09]>> [laughter] >> I was like, "Why don't you take the door.

[00:42:12]And uh and And then and then he says um Uh Deacon says like, "I was putting on a sensual dance for my friends. And then we're [laughter] getting really into it, and you interrupted it."

[00:42:25]It's like these guys are just so bored they're just watching their buddy do a dance.

[00:42:30]I love it. I love the I love the back and forth of Nick obviously like, you know, I talked about all the other ones of like if Deacon is is The Lost Boys, you know, Nick is like the Twilight.

[00:42:40]Right? He's the Edward Cullen vampire.

[00:42:42]When he even says as much in the movie.

[00:42:44]>> Really? Right? He's like the new sexy one. And so just Deacon no longer being the cool vampire. Um you know, because like since The Lost Boys there really hadn't been another iteration of vampires um that changed anything, right? And so Twilight came along and replaced Lost Boys as like the cool vampire the cool sexy vampires. And so you see that playing out in the movie through Deacon is like he's actively being replaced as like the young cool guy, which was like his identity. Who he has like access and can get him into cool places and like >> Exactly. They're like, "Oh, that's Deacon. That's he's does wild and crazy things." And then like Nick actually is that. He knows all the bouncers. But then he's also creating problems. He's telling everybody that he's a vampire.

[00:43:29]Including one guy at the bar who's like, "Oh, I'm a vampire hunter." He's like, "Haha, you're hilarious."

[00:43:34]>> Good one. Yeah. Turns out he was right.

[00:43:37]He was He actually was a vampire hunter, yeah. I did Like that little segment of the movie where like Stu just got introduced and the vampires just for no reason love Stu so much.

[00:43:48]And [laughter] and Nick's trying to figure out how to fit into this group.

[00:43:52]And I there's just one scene I feel like is really understated, but it's so funny where Nick is talking to Peter. He's like, "Hey, man.

[00:44:00]Don't turn my buddy Stu into a vampire.

[00:44:03]He's a vegetarian. And the The thing he'd want to do is eat people." What I'm trying to say is cuz I know that you you turned me into the empire.

[00:44:12]Maybe don't do that to him.

[00:44:14]He's a vegetarian. The last thing he'd want to do is eat a live being or eat blood or eat meat.

[00:44:21]So I just leave him alone. And Peter's just like He's [laughter] just like "grunt".

[00:44:28]And he does, he leaves him alone. Yeah.

[00:44:31]I thought that was great. And then we can't move on past this moment without talking about the werewolf interaction.

[00:44:37]Beautiful. It's so good.

[00:44:40]Rhys Darby, who is who is like the the He's like the I'm the alpha male. Um Right. He's so Again, going back to Flight of the Conchords, he's still my heart in Flight of the Conchords. He was Murray in Flight of the Conchords. Yeah.

[00:44:54]It's one of my favorite scenes in in Flight of the Conchords. Obviously, Flight [clears throat] of the Conchords is is Jemaine and and Bret McKenzie. They're a two-piece, you know, comedy musical group. Um and Murray is their manager.

[00:45:10]And he meets in like this like back closet. That's his office. He's like, "All right, here we go. Band meeting.

[00:45:19]Jemaine." He goes, "Yeah." He goes, "All right, check."

[00:45:24]And Bret. And Bret's like, "Well, yeah, well, obviously." He's like, "All right, present. All right, Murray. Present."

[00:45:33]>> [laughter] >> Yeah, he takes roll. He takes roll for the three of them.

[00:45:37]He's like, "All right, we need to talk about our fan base." They're like, "What you mean, Mel?"

[00:45:43]>> [laughter] >> They have one fan, Mel.

[00:45:46]And that's He calls it He's like, "Yeah, well, I like to call them our fan base, you know, it makes it seem a little bigger."

[00:45:52]But yeah, Mel.

[00:45:54]>> [laughter] >> I love Murray. But yeah, anyway, the werewolves one of the funniest parts of this whole movie. I I they only have two two, maybe three scenes. Yeah, technically three scenes.

[00:46:03]>> three three scenes, yeah. But they're just so impactful and he's so funny, you know, like when they start like kind of getting in there and they start cursing.

[00:46:11]He's like, "Hey, what did I say?" Hey, hey, hey, don't swear. Sorry. They they We're werewolves. Not swearwolves.

[00:46:17]>> What are we? We're werewolves, not swearwolves. They get very offensive.

[00:46:20]No, it's Listen, it's a very offensive word to call people Which is [laughter] so dumb. Um >> [gasps] >> Yes. Yeah, and and a fun fact around that, they've been developing a sequel to this movie since it came out.

[00:46:35]Obviously, Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement are so busy, so they haven't really had time to sit down and write it and it'll probably take them another year and then they wouldn't use the script again. Yeah, right. Um but they're they're actually developing a sequel uh that focuses on the werewolves uh in in New Zealand. And it's actually get this, the title of it is Werewolves.

[00:46:57]>> [laughter] >> Which is like it's so obvious, it's right there.

[00:47:03]But it's also so hilarious and so I really hope if they do it, they bring back Rhys Darby to to be the lead. He's he's like, "I'm the alpha male, right?"

[00:47:12]Yeah. to play the alpha male of Werewolves. And Stu, if for Stu and Rhys Darby to come back, it's another thing. I'd watch it. I'd watch I'd watch the hell out of that.

[00:47:23]Same.

[00:47:24]Uh and then just before we move on, Nick introduces them into the uh how do you use the internet?

[00:47:32]>> [laughter] >> Which is really funny.

[00:47:35]Cuz he says, "You can find anything on the internet." And then uh Viago says, "I lost a nice silk scarf around 1912."

[00:47:45]And then Deacon says, "Now, Google it."

[00:47:48]>> [laughter] >> And he's showing them he's showing them Facebook. He's like, "Google pictures of virgins." He's like, "Now, what can you do with these pictures?" He's like, "Well, you can, you know, add her on Facebook. You can poke them." He's like, "Yes. Poke them."

[00:48:04]>> [laughter] >> I was too late.

[00:48:24]>> [panting] >> We have Peter getting killed in a horrific sunlight accident uh because the the vampire hunter got in and came through the window.

[00:48:37]Uh and then, you know, Vlad tries to save him, but he's too late with his bucket of water. Yeah.

[00:48:43]Um tragic stuff.

[00:48:46]And then It was like It was such a small bucket of water, too, for the amount of fire there was. [laughter] Get out of my way.

[00:48:55]I was too late.

[00:48:57]>> [laughter] >> Uh and then, the police come to their door and like, "So, yeah, we've had a complaint about uh a break-in and then a lot of shrieking."

[00:49:08]>> [laughter] >> Just responding to a report of a possible forced entry and also a rather large amount of shrieking. Just um wondering if maybe we come and just have a wee look around. You will not notice anything out of the ordinary.

[00:49:23]No, we certainly hope not. Let's just Let's just get going.

[00:49:26]And then, he lets us know, he's like, "I'm not going to hypnotizing, so this could wear off at any time." So, now everyone's like nervous the whole time the police are there.

[00:49:34]And they're looking around at the coffee.

[00:49:36]Deacon Deacon and and Nick were fighting. So, they're like floating in the air as the police walk [laughter] in. Right. Vlad's holding Deacon back and Deacon's like actively flying up into the corner where Nick is just like Spider-Man, you know, in the in that arena where he's fighting Bone Saw up in the corner. You know, Bone Saw is ready.

[00:49:59]I got you for 3 minutes. 3 minutes of 3 minutes of play time.

[00:50:05]>> [laughter] >> Rest in peace, Macho Man.

[00:50:07]Uh Good stuff, man.

[00:50:10]All right. [laughter] Uh but yeah, so he hypnotizes them and then they're like looking around and look up in the corner and they see Nick like stuck to the wall. They're like, "Wait a minute.

[00:50:19]There's no fire detectors and there's no smoke alarms."

[00:50:22]>> [laughter] >> Oh, man. Which is honestly super accurate for for >> [clears throat] >> city inspectors.

[00:50:30]But then then they go down into the basement and they're like, "Look at this. You've got these two buckets of uh accelerant right underneath an electrical outlet and right underneath a bunch of like newspaper whatever." And uh There's like a burned body like a corpse right next to him. There's like spinal columns. Right. And the smashed vampire hunter. And they're like, "He's not going to be happy about this when he wakes up. He's going to be having a good time."

[00:50:59]>> [laughter] >> And the concrete slab's not going to give him any warmth. He needs a blanket.

[00:51:03]He needs getting crushed by a giant concrete slab. He's dead. He's dead.

[00:51:10]And then as [laughter] they're about to leave, somebody's like, "Should we just kill him?" And then Vlad says, "Well, let's just see what the other safety wants to hear from him and maybe we'll kill him."

[00:51:21]And then they decide. [laughter] It's like he he actually wants the safety tips.

[00:51:29]>> [laughter] >> Oh, that's really funny.

[00:51:33]Oh, man.

[00:51:35]And then and then right after that they banish Nick. They have a little vampire tribunal. Right.

[00:51:42]>> And they say they're going to banish him indefinitely.

[00:51:46]They're >> [laughter] >> going to do 6 months.

[00:51:49]And they said they're like indefinitely.

[00:51:51]He's like, well, indefinitely means a long time. Like, you know, could be tomorrow, could be 6 months. He's like, no, it'll it'll be 6 months. Like that.

[00:52:00]>> [laughter] >> They're They're immortal vampires and they're talking about 6 6 months of banishment for killing an 8,000-year-old [laughter] vampire.

[00:52:13]It's just funny. It's just so >> Good writing. It's so funny. So, when in the I don't think it made It didn't make the final cut of the movie, but there was a scene originally uh where they have a funeral for Peter.

[00:52:25]Um where they're going to sort of give him like a Viking funeral and they're going to send him off into the Hutt River in in Wellington in New Zealand. Um and so they do the scene and they get Peter's burned corpse and they put him on a raft and they just kind of send him off. I don't know what happens, but you can imagine with the movie, I'm sure some sort of hilarity ensued, right?

[00:52:47]But they only had one corpse. They're like, all right, we got to do this right. We got to, you know, make sure we get this shot. So, they send it off and then they they let it They show Peter's corpse going down the river, right? And then they say, "Okay, cut." They're like, "Wait a minute. Like, it's still going down the river.

[00:53:02]And this is a lifelike realistic burned corpse that we just sent [laughter] down the Wellington River. Like, someone's going to find this and freak out." So, they tried to find it and they couldn't find it. So, they had to The filmmakers had to send out a press release to the city of Wellington to say, "If you find a burned corpse in the Hutt River, it's not real. It's part of this movie that we're doing."

[00:53:26]>> [laughter] >> Which is so funny. I love stories like that. [laughter] Can you imagine being the guy who's like, "Oh my god."

[00:53:35]Just find that.

[00:53:37]A scorched corpse. And then you look closer at it and it's freaking scorched Nosferatu. You're like, "What did I just find?

[00:53:45]>> [laughter] >> With this like spiky teeth?"

[00:53:50]Nothing could be more terrifying. Not human. Literally, definitely not.

[00:53:55]>> [laughter] [clears throat] >> Yeah. I love when he's I think it's around this time when when they're getting ready to go to that party and Jemaine's character, Vlad, doesn't want to go. And so he's like, I don't know.

[00:54:08]He hasn't even >> He's all He's like a rotten for some reason.

[00:54:11]He just turned rotten. Just leave me to do my dark bidding on the internet. What you bidding on?

[00:54:17]I'm bidding on a table.

[00:54:19]>> [laughter] >> I thought you said table.

[00:54:28]Oh, man. I love that.

[00:54:31]You know, I Now that Now that you say that, they did tell us why the the cat face was his.

[00:54:38]They said that after his um his battle with the beast where he lost Yeah. that he was never the same. And he said he used to be able to hypnotize huge crowds and he used to be able to turn into all kinds of animals, but now he never gets the faces right.

[00:54:52]That's That's why the cat >> good. I never noticed that.

[00:55:10]Right. Which I mean like it's speaking of the artwork, the artwork is all amazing. Like the opening credits, I don't know if we ever hit on that, but that stuff's hilarious. I was like pausing just like in between just to look at everyone cuz they're all masterpieces. There's the one of Peter and it's like a 90s like glam photo shoot where like his his face is here and he's got like the like the glamour shot. Like he's got the It's so good.

[00:55:35]>> [laughter] >> They're all good. Every single one of them's good. Those 90's photo shoots.

[00:55:39][clears throat] So we we got to make one of those for the Turtle Club.

[00:55:42]Definitely. Definitely.

[00:55:44]>> For sure. I love that idea. Yeah, the beast you're talking about the beast.

[00:55:48]That's hilarious. Showing the picture of the beast when they're talking about it.

[00:55:52]It's like a It's like a rat with like a penis like on its chest.

[00:55:57]>> [laughter] >> That was like he had the great battle with the beast. And then they go to the party and it's just his ex-girlfriend.

[00:56:07]And he comes up and he's like, "Ah, have you already forgotten your former lover?" And he has the mask on and she's like, "Georgie?" He's like, >> [laughter] >> "No, like 5 years after that."

[00:56:22]>> [laughter] >> It was such a funny line. No, there's no wasted lines in this movie. Literally. My favorite My favorite part of the whole the masquerade is a very funny sequence.

[00:56:32]>> [laughter] >> They brought a human to a room full of zombies, witches, vampires. And [laughter] the zombies like trying to teach the zombie rules of like I don't have hands.

[00:56:42]He's He's sitting next to that zombie who's drinking a beer. He's like, "Pardon if I ask you a personal question, but uh are you pre-deceased?"

[00:56:53]>> [laughter] [laughter] >> He's like so formal about it.

[00:57:00]Pre-deceased is a funny way for the undead to refer to the alive. That's very I I assume that's a very funny >> That's freaking very funny.

[00:57:08]But my favorite part of that whole sequence is when um I don't remember her name, but the beast Mhm. Stew starts talking about his job because they realize he's a human and so he's like, "Yeah, I'm an analyst." And they're like, "Well, what does that What does that mean?" He's like, "Okay. So there are organizations and these organizations have their own uh rules and criteria. And so we analyze those rules for that our company." And then she goes, "Virgin."

[00:57:31]"He's a virgin."

[00:57:31]>> [laughter] >> Dude, this is so good. This is so much better.

[00:57:37]>> [laughter] >> That the warehousing the data analyst stuff, the warehousing, that's actually what Stu does. [laughter] He was actually explaining his real job. [laughter] Cuz that's all he knew how to do. I mean, like they asked him a question and he was like, "Well, okay, I'll tell you what I do for That's actually what he did for a living at the time. Which is hilarious. It's so funny. I love it.

[00:57:59]It's so >> [laughter] >> great. virgin virgin He's a virgin.

[00:58:03]Instead of talking about it, he goes, "I can smell a virgin from 100 yards away."

[00:58:07]He's like, "Fine, then why don't you go 100 yards that way and smell yourself?"

[00:58:11]>> [laughter] >> I didn't catch that.

[00:58:14]Uh that's freaking funny, dude.

[00:58:17]I love that whole sequence.

[00:58:19]It's very funny. It's a great and just the setup and to think of that setup.

[00:58:23]Right. You bring a human in Right.

[00:58:26]>> to a room full of things that want to eat him. Right.

[00:58:28]>> It's very funny. It's a very funny idea.

[00:58:30]Yeah.

[00:58:31]>> Props to them for that. For sure. And they get him out. They're walking home.

[00:58:35]And then one more showdown with the werewolves.

[00:58:40]And Murray's not so nice this time. He's like Right. He's actually starting to turn on mean things. Right. I'm really stressed right now. It's a full moon and I'm irritable.

[00:58:50]>> [laughter] >> Everybody brought their locks and there's like a bunch of problems with it. Like they don't have the keys or they forgot the code. And they broke clothes that they're going to tear out.

[00:59:01]I was like, "You know how big you get when you turn into a werewolf?"

[00:59:04]They're wearing jeans.

[00:59:09]Oh man, the idea of all of them just wearing like tracksuits is so funny.

[00:59:14]>> [laughter] >> Another random story I heard. So so um Stu, who was the star of the show, obviously, uh when on on Taika Waititi's first movie he directed, um I forget the name of it, but the first movie he ever directed, he hired Stu as a as a runner, right? Basically a an assistant.

[00:59:35]Um, just do little tasks for him. And Stu was like, this is my chance. I'm really going to like become like a film guy. So, he said he bought two tracksuits, a red one and a black one.

[00:59:46]And he was going to like that was going to be his new style. And he wore it the one day and then he was like, this is stupid. Why did I do this? And so he went back to his normal clothes. And Taika said, no. I want you to wear a tracksuit every day from now on.

[01:00:00]So, [laughter] he made him wear a tracksuit from now on from that point on.

[01:00:05]Uh, that's great.

[01:00:06]>> Uh, so I mean Dave just been pranking this guy this whole time, which is so funny. Cuz it's like exactly what you would have done to me.

[01:00:12]>> [laughter] >> 100%. That's what I'm like I'm like 100% that would happen. I would literally just like hire you just to be in a tracksuit if you weren't so busy freaking being a doctor and all that stuff. Wasting time with whatever I do in my day job.

[01:00:25]What?

[01:00:26]Dude, that the werewolf thing there's a couple of things I loved about that. So, um, so just the basics first of all, the fact that Deacon says, you know, if I know Stu, I think this is what he would have wanted.

[01:00:44]>> [laughter] >> He's disemboweled by freaking dog by werewolves. There's blood splattered on the trees and like he just goes into [laughter] this gruesome detail like I thought that's so funny cuz Stu is just a regular guy. [laughter] And then the police when they're talking about like, yeah, it seems like these these dog attacks happen once a month.

[01:01:06]They're getting more frequent. And she said it was not good for anyone to have these you know, these people disemboweled by these dogs. Especially not the dogs.

[01:01:15]>> [laughter] >> And they cut to that dog like, we're going to have to put him down now.

[01:01:21]>> [laughter] >> It was just a random dog.

[01:01:24]>> [gasps] >> And And then at the end of the movie when they show that Stu didn't actually die. Right.

[01:01:33]>> He just turned into a werewolf. Right.

[01:01:35]>> And they show a video that's a reenactment of him being found by the werewolves.

[01:01:41]I forgot about that.

[01:01:42]>> [laughter] >> The video reenactment.

[01:01:45]All the werewolves are naked.

[01:01:51]>> [laughter] >> It's just a reenactment.

[01:01:55]It says it's a reenactment. It says it's a reenactment.

[01:01:57]>> [laughter] >> That's so funny, dude. I've I forgot about that. I completely forgot about that scene. That is that's got to be one of the funniest jokes in the movie. It's a great joke, man. Like that I like that they hide so many of their good jokes in like the subtext.

[01:02:11]It's I love that. Everything in the movie is a joke.

[01:02:13]>> You're talking about 195 hours, dude.

[01:02:16]How how many like I actually heard that and and if somehow you guys are watching this, Jemaine, somebody send this to him, Taika, freaking Stu, anybody. If you're watching this, I've heard a rumor that they've talked about releasing all of the footage online so that the fans can edit their own versions of the movie.

[01:02:38]Which like that dude, we've got to do that if they do that. I'll be first in line. I'll be first in line. I would love to make my own version of it. But yeah, my version would would would just be everything would be focused on the the werewolves. The alpha males.

[01:02:52]>> a fun movie. Would be Now one thing I noticed and just kind of a movie making piece, the werewolves, I think they probably ran into some kind of technical limitation with with the costumes and like how bulky they were. Right.

[01:03:07]>> [snorts] >> And so all the shots of the wolves, they're like off in the distance in the dark or they're very dynamic shots or like the wolf like coming right at the camera.

[01:03:16]And I think that's a really cool way to get around that limitation and and make it seem purposeful. Right.

[01:03:22]>> In a way like the the wolves you never get a good look at them.

[01:03:25]And I like that. I like the way that they did it. Cuz they give you just enough that you're satisfied, but mysterious enough that like it hides the clunkiness of the costumes. Right. Which is beautiful. I I like that some of them were in varying stages of them. Some of them were like full on like looked like a freaking wampa from Star Wars. And then some of them were like like Teen Wolf. So it's like kind of the same thing. [laughter] Like there all the different styles of werewolves within the same Yeah. There was like big ones and like slim ones and like Like when they were when that one vampire was flying and the the wolves were hanging from his legs. Those were like Teen Wolf style werewolves. And there was Teen Wolf ones and then there was like the wampa like Yeah, the huge the huge one. Yeah.

[01:04:08]All right next to each other.

[01:04:10]So I think it's the same exact thing.

[01:04:11]They're like, you know, we had all the different vampire styles. Let's have the same different werewolf styles. Why not?

[01:04:16]Those are probably older werewolves.

[01:04:19]Which figure out >> Maybe that dog was a werewolf for all we know.

[01:04:22]>> [snorts] >> But um Ah, I like that.

[01:04:25]>> Right?

[01:04:26]Um I did want to ask you before we move on uh to our ratings and such.

[01:04:32]Um the scene where they're fighting in that hallway, I think it's probably one of those like rotating hallway things like I think they did in Inception. Right. Uh I thought I I don't really understand how they make all that work. Like are there cables involved? How do they make the camera fixed? Does the whole thing turn as one unit? How does it work?

[01:04:54]>> on a it's turned on a giant drum basically. So they build the set and then there's a I believe they shot this in in obviously in Wilmington, right? So very likely that some of this stuff was left over from Lord of the Rings type um you know you know equipment, but it's just this giant drum that they can put a rotating drum that they can build the set into and then you know softer walls and things like that so that so that actors don't get hurt but the whole set can rotate within it. A lot of this obviously was done from that and then throughout the movie you know you're talking wire work some of that stuff send Nick flying through the window which is really funny because it's a funny scene in and of itself of him learning how to fly but then also it's also hilarious when you think about the actor who's just actually on a wire Right.

[01:05:49]>> actually trying to like awkwardly struggling to get They're not helping him right? They're not like they're not rigged up in a certain way to help him do it smoothly. He's just they're allowing him to awkwardly like back in to the window. um But again it's even more so like I don't know how they pulled it off to be honest. There's not a lot of you know this is not like a big budget. There's no behind the scenes featurette. There's not a lot of stuff for me to like look into other than just assuming that the producers did their jobs. They got scrappy. They called in favors.

[01:06:18]I'm sure Peter Jackson lent a hand. You know the New Zealand film community is not a not a huge one. and so you know I'm sure they pulled in some favors mean Jermaine called his buddy Brett who is what's Brett's elf name in Lord of the Rings? Do you remember that?

[01:06:37]>> have a name? Yeah he does it's like no it's he has a meme name. It's like Frodo. Hang on let me see. Brett McKenzie elf name He's an extra in Lord of the Rings. If if you didn't know. Figwit Yeah. Figwit Figwit. Yeah is Frodo is great.

[01:06:59]Who is that?

[01:07:01]>> [laughter] >> So Brett McKenzie who was the counterpart of Flight of the Concords is a Figwit and so, I don't know, maybe that's how they did it. Pulled in a little bit of New Zealand magic. But, I mean, do New Zealand when you're talking about New Zealand, you have this.

[01:07:16]Lord of the Rings, obviously, Hobbit and the original trilogy. Uh Narnia.

[01:07:22]Um you know, Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe was shot in New Zealand.

[01:07:25]Uh Willow was shot in New Zealand.

[01:07:28]Great movie.

[01:07:29]Friggin Kevin Sorbo's Hercules in New Zealand.

[01:07:36]Shouldn't ended on that one. That was probably a little uh anticlimactic, but Right. And and Kevin Sorbo's Hercules.

[01:07:48]>> [laughter] >> But, uh yeah, I mean, New Zealand is is literally it's it's truly just a magical place.

[01:07:55]Um so, Kiwis, tip my hat to you. Keep doing it.

[01:07:59]Whatever magic you guys down there, whatever you have in your uh pipes that allow you to blow pirate ships, keep doing it.

[01:08:06]Um So, just a moment for our oh yeah, rights. We'll get into our ratings. Mhm.

[01:08:13]So, for my oh yeah, right, uh Stu was 100% murdered by those werewolves. His >> [laughter] >> intestines There was like four of them. His intestines were out. Literally, his intestines were out.

[01:08:25]That's insane. So, Stu is dead. He's not a werewolf. That's pretty good.

[01:08:29]>> Oh yeah, right. But, oh yeah, right on that one, for sure.

[01:08:31]>> It's so much a better ending the fact that he lives, so I'll let it slide.

[01:08:35]And that he lives as a werewolf. Just set up to set up the the sequel.

[01:08:39]Werewolves.

[01:08:40]>> Werewolves.

[01:08:41]>> [laughter] >> Just friggin funny.

[01:08:43]Um my oh yeah, right is around Peter, who uh they set up pretty early is 8,000 years old. Right? So, I googled it. Uh that would put him in the Mesolithic period of humankind, which means Peter is a caveman, basically.

[01:09:03]So, you're telling me >> You're telling me for 8,000 years, he has not once seen the sun?

[01:09:12]That this is the time, in 20 2015, with freaking sealed, roofed basements. Uh, why do they even have a window in the basement? I wondered the same thing.

[01:09:24]>> Seal everything off.

[01:09:25]>> Actually, I had to rewind it to understand how that could happen in the basement. It was a window. No, someone crawled in the wind. Just seal it off.

[01:09:32]So, you're saying somebody who lived for 8,000 years through like the freaking all those like Bronze Age, the Stone Age. They went through all the different ages where they didn't even have roofs. They lived in tents. Hurricanes came through. He lived through all that. But, and here we are in the modern era, uh, and it was just a guy crawling through the window that did him in. Uh, oh, yeah, right on that one. He either would have been dead by now or You know. Surely he figured out some tricks along eight centuries or eight millennia.

[01:10:05]Millennia. Millennia. A lot more than eight centuries. I think like freaking Vlad is eight centuries. He's eight millennia.

[01:10:11]So, oh, yeah, right on that one.

[01:10:14]Agreed.

[01:10:58]Matt, what do you got for for story for what we do in the Shadows?

[01:11:01]Uh story for me is going to be a three.

[01:11:04]Uh I don't think the story really matters for this.

[01:11:07]Uh it's not it's not one of the great tales that we've seen in films so far.

[01:11:13]Um it's a it's a good enough story that like there's a beginning, a middle, and an end. Right. And it's the it's the scaffolding for the rest of the movie.

[01:11:22]Uh rewatchability a 10, 100%. Uh I've watched already. I'll probably watch it another time like maybe this week.

[01:11:30]There's there's still pieces of it I want to go back and watch again.

[01:11:32]Uh fun is of course a 10 on this one.

[01:11:34]This was a blast. I laughed all the whole way through this movie.

[01:11:38]Um emotional impact is a two.

[01:11:42]Uh cuz there's that moment where you think Stu is dead and that's devastating.

[01:11:46]Uh and then for science realism on this one also a two.

[01:11:50]Uh granted, this is a movie about vampires.

[01:11:53]Um so there's going to be a lot of wiggle room for what it but there's just there's nothing in this movie that's really scientifically accurate except for if you bite somebody in an artery, it's going to spray around the room like crazy. So.

[01:12:05]That that was accurate.

[01:12:07]All right, that's good. So if vampires bite you, don't go for the jugular? No, no.

[01:12:14]Jugular's a vein, low pressure. Okay.

[01:12:17]>> High volume. So that's a great place to bite. Okay. If you hit the carotid, it's going to spray like 20 ft.

[01:12:23]>> Carotid. Got it. So.

[01:12:26]Do Do Do vampires This is probably a misnomer. My entire life, I've kind of pictured vampires as having like straws in their teeth.

[01:12:39]Yeah.

[01:12:40]Anything >> the teeth are I think the teeth are just for biting and tearing.

[01:12:43]>> with that? No? Okay. You're thinking snakes.

[01:12:47]Okay, snakes do that? Yes, snakes have a like a cuz they're their fang is a tube and the venom comes out the tube. Right.

[01:12:55]Okay.

[01:12:55]>> That makes sense. So where can you just Can vampires take it in, right?

[01:12:59]No, vampires they they bite and then they just drink it like a normal person.

[01:13:03]Got it. Got it. All right, that that matters for for the science realism.

[01:13:12]The matter of course expert on the biology of vampires.

[01:13:16]>> Right. I will say it does raise a question. From Dusk Till Dawn, the snake vampire of Salma Hayek.

[01:13:22]>> Yeah.

[01:13:23]How does that thing drink blood?

[01:13:25]Well, I would love to see that crossover. So again, personally if I'm throwing out my suggestion box for werewolves let's get our boy Robert Rodriguez involved. Let's see a Dusk Till Dawn werewolves What We Do in the Shadows crossover, please.

[01:13:43]And do not leave Carl Robinson out.

[01:13:47]But if you do then put him in as a What was his name?

[01:13:51]Kay Jayzaz? Uh He's >> [laughter] >> the Kay Kay Straz. Kay Straz is the the professional yo-yoist. Uh story I got a four.

[01:14:02]A little bit higher mainly cuz I appreciate uh the skill of the the improv actors basically creating this story. The skill of Jemaine and Taika Waititi seeing the story real time and being able to alter it. I think that's very impressive. And it very in you know, it 195 hours dude, they could have ended up with nothing. And they ended up really with the you know, congruent storyline.

[01:14:28]So I think that's very impressive.

[01:14:30]Rewatchability is a 10.

[01:14:32]Same. I honestly could rewatch it right now after talking about it for over an hour.

[01:14:38]Fun I also have it a 10.

[01:14:40]Uh emotional impact I have it a three.

[01:14:44]Um I moved it up from a two because I I did think about the the storyline that we didn't really talk talk about of Viago and his his love, right? That is something that for a second there it actually, especially when they especially when they thought Stu was dead. Um, you know, there was a moment there of not only of his romance, right?

[01:15:12]But I guess of the sadness. Uh, if we are going to put ourselves into these characters' shoes, they're vampires, they're immortal.

[01:15:19]Um, it's it's sad. You see every everyone you will ever love and have ever loved, you watch them die.

[01:15:28]Um, even so, Deacon has a as a really funny line in there where he says um they die by disease, they die by ducks or geese or swans. [laughter] Or sometimes they just die.

[01:15:48]But, you know, again, that you know, the Viago and and his his love and and um, you know, that that side of it. It actually that pulled on me just for a second. It is sweet. It is sweet. It's sweet and it's sad when you realize the the tragedy of vampires never really having you know, they really all they do is see death.

[01:16:11]Uh, so it makes you feel for them.

[01:16:14]Uh, the filmmaking craft I have a six.

[01:16:16]Um, I think, you know, it's it's it's low budget indie, it's fun.

[01:16:21]There's nothing necessarily like special about it um, other than I think what they were able to do from the effects standpoint um, is very impressive. And the editing when you're talking 195 hours down to you know, less than an an hour and a half or just over an hour and a half.

[01:16:39]Um, no, just less than an hour and a half is is very very impressive.

[01:16:43]Um so [clears throat] Matt's got a 27, I've got a 33. Wow. So, 33 is pretty high for me. 27 is right down the middle pretty much for Matt. Um and uh yeah.
