Shiva came in. So Yun told her that Dan wanted to tell her something. Dan explained simply without promises. He explained the principle. Bone conduction, an electromagnet, a microphone, a wire, a battery. Shiva listened. Her face was expressionless.
Her hands were clenched. When Dan finished, she was silent for a long time. Then she asked when Dan said he could build the device in two weeks, but his sister was far away in Calderon, and for the device to reach her, he needed a trustworthy person and a safe route.
Shiva said she knew the route and that she had people in the south, smugglers, former colleagues. They'll deliver it.
Dan nodded. Then he got to work. two weeks. A carbon microphone, an electromagnetic vibrator, a metal band that presses the vibrator against the bone behind the ear, a small battery that can be worn on a belt, a wire, everything simple, everything crude.
Everything worked. He tested the device on himself. He plugged his ears with wax. He pressed the headband against his temple. He asked Ellie to speak into the microphone. He heard her muffled with a hiss, but the words were distinguishable. The man on horseback galloped south. A month passed, then two. Dan had almost forgotten. No, he hadn't forgotten. He'd pushed it aside. He had too much on his plate. School, the workshop, new lamps, new batteries, a zinc problem that needed solving. A problem with Halt, a problem with the empire. But one evening, Shiva walked into the workshop.
She was holding a letter, small, crumpled, smelling of the road in the southern dialect. Shiva stood in the middle of the workshop and read. Her face didn't change. Then she lowered the letter, looked at Dan, and said three words. Her sister can hear. Then she fell silent. Then her shoulders trembled once. She stepped forward and pressed her forehead against Dan's shoulder.
Shiva Okapor, mercenary, deserter, a woman with two sabers and a scar across her eyebrow. She stood there and cried into the shoulder of the man who had made a thing for her sister out of wire and powder for her sister. Dan stood there holding her. He didn't move. He didn't say a word because sometimes wire and powder mean more than words. The workshop had turned into a school. Ellie had been given a position and a silver badge. Aen had revealed her identity as the third princess and stayed on to work. So had suggested the idea of bone conduction to Dan for Shiva's sister.
Dan had assembled the device in two weeks and sent it via smugglers to Calderon. Shiva's sister heard the sound for the first time in years. Shiva showed emotion for the first time. A year, exactly a year since the day Dan Cain woke up face down in the cold mud of Brackenford. He marked the occasion by sleeping for 14 hours straight, for the first time in 12 months. Lilith didn't wake him. She closed the door to his room and hung up a sign she had written herself. The master is sleeping.
Whoever wakes him up will have to repair the batteries for a week. Ellie later told him that three students had approached the door, read the sign each time, and tiptoed away. When Dan woke up, there was a bowl of porridge and a mug of tea on the table, already cold.
Lilith had set them out that morning.
Dan ate and thought that some things never change, and that that's a good thing. Over the past year, Bracken Ford had changed beyond recognition. The 200 lamps in the square had become 300.
Electric lighting had come to the three main streets. The telegraph line was working reliably. Three towns were connected. Brackenford, Havenrich, and now Littlebrand. A village halfway between them that had started as a relay station and grown into a full-fledged communications hub. The inkeeper, whose son monitored the relays, became the richest man in the village. The school next to the workshop had 20 students, 10 in the older group, 10 in the younger.
Tobias Corvin became the senior assistant. He taught classes when Dan couldn't. He explained the theory to the younger ones. He assembled batteries with his eyes closed. He was 15. In Dan's former world, it would have been time for him to choose a college. Here he was an engineer, [snorts] the first engineer born in this world, not transported from another. Water electrolysis began working at the start of the 10th month. Dan passed a current through water with added alkali.
Hydrogen was released at one electrode, oxygen at the other. The gases collected in inverted glass flasks above the water. So Yun took the oxygen. She used it for treatment. People with diseased lungs breathed through a damp cloth under which oxygen was fed. Not a pure oxygen mask, a crude, primitive system, but it worked. Three people who by local standards should have died of lung disease that winter survived. So didn't call it a miracle. She called it gas therapy. The priests called it something else.
Dan hadn't used the hydrogen yet. He kept it in sealed flasks, a dangerous gas, explosive, but potentially useful.
He thought about a hydrogen flame for soldering, about a hydrogen torch, things that would be needed later when the workshop grew to the point of working with refractory metals. The first industrial-sized electromagnet began operating in the 11th month. a large coil, an iron core made from a blacksmith's rod, 500 turns of copper wire, powered by a double- capacity battery. This magnet lifted the blacksmith's iron hammer. Blacksmith Brand, an old and sturdy man with hands like logs, looked at his hammer hanging in the air without a rope or a hand.
Then he sat down on the stump and said he needed a drink. Dan used the electromagnet for its first industrial application, ore sorting. The copper ore from the mines contained chunks of iron rock before they had been picked out by hand. Now the electromagnet pulled the iron out of the pile of ore in seconds.
The miners watched and couldn't believe their eyes. One said it was a cursed stone that ate iron. Dan spent half an hour explaining that the stone wasn't cursed, but magnetized. The minor nodded but still gave the electromagnet a wide birth.
Dan made his first silvered mirror at the end of the 11th month.
Electroplating, a thin layer of silver on a glass plate, Lilith's glass, silver from a solution, current from a battery.
The mirror turned out cloudy with streaks uneven. But it reflected for real. Not like polished copper, not like water in a basin. a real reflection.
Lilith was the first to look into it.
She stood there and looked at herself for a long time. Then she said quietly that she didn't know she had eyes like that. Dan asked what color. She said gray. She knew they were gray. She'd been told, but seeing it was different.
Ailen asked for a mirror for her desk.
Dan made a small one, round in a copper frame. Ailen placed it next to the lamp he'd made for her earlier, a table lamp with a green shade made of organ glass, a warm circle of light on parchment.
Ailen called this circle her kingdom, a place where she simply writes, doesn't rule, doesn't hide, just writes. But the year brought more than just victories.
Hol had increased the pressure. Copper prices had risen 30% over the year.
Meera calculated and recalculated. The numbers didn't add up. At those prices, the workshop was operating at a loss.
Holt knew it. He waited for Dan to come to him on his own with a bow, with a request.
Dan didn't come. Instead, he found another source. Through her connections, Meera reached out to the ship owners from the western port of Danour. They transported copper by sea from the southern colonies. cheaper than Holts, a longer route, but cheaper. The first shipment arrived two months later, a ton of pure copper. Holt found out and flew into a rage. He didn't show it, but Meera saw it in his eyes when they met at the market. The eyes of a man who was used to controlling everything and had discovered that control was slipping away. Meera told Dan that Holt was now truly dangerous. Not like before. Before he wanted to buy, now he wants to destroy or sell the information to Calderon.
Dan nodded. He knew. And he knew time was running out. Sebastian Vale hadn't sent a second letter. That was worse than if he'd sent 10. Valet's silence meant he was preparing. Not for negotiations, for action. That evening, Dan sat in his workshop and drew on parchment. Not a diagram, a map. bracken ford walls, gates, streets, mines, roads, and lines, wires, lines of light.
He thought about how light could be used for more than just reading and trade.
Light could be used for defense. If you see the enemy and the enemy doesn't see you, you've already won. He began to sketch. A year in Brackenford, electrolysis had yielded oxygen for So Yun's medicine and hydrogen for the future. Electromagnets began to be used for sorting ore. Electroplating produced the first silver mirrors. Holt raised the price of copper, but Meera found an alternative source. Valet fell silent, which meant he was preparing for action.
Dan began to think about the city's defense. A year and a half, the Calderon Empire declared Brackenford a city of forbidden fire. The news arrived by telegraph from Havenrich. Gareth related. A decree from the Imperial Council. All devices that produce light without the blessing of the church are declared heretical. All craftsmen working with such devices are declared outlaws within the empire. Brackenfort is not formally within the Empire's territory, but the decree gave Imperial troops the right to pursue heretics beyond the borders if local authorities can't handle it. Meera read the decree and said it was a declaration of war, not a formal one, a de facto one.
Calderon won't storm Brackenford tomorrow, but in 6 months or a year, when he's gathered an army and found a pretext.
Dan gathered everyone. Lilith, Meera, Shiva, Ailen, with Yun, Tobias, Ellie, Orwin came on his own, leaning on a cane. He sat in the corner and listened.
Dan said they had a choice. To flee, to dismantle the workshop, to take their knowledge north where Calderon couldn't reach them, or to stay and defend themselves. He said he wouldn't decide for them because it was their city, not his. He's an outsider, a stranger, a man from the gutter. And if they decide to flee, he'll go with them and rebuild.
Silence. Then Orvin spoke up from his corner, saying he was blind and old and that running was difficult for him. That he was born in this house and would die in this house, and that he liked the way his house smelled now that the lamp burned without smoke. Lilith said she was staying. No explanation, just staying. Shiva said she was a mercenary and that mercenaries usually run from armies, not stand against them. Then she paused and said that usually mercenaries don't make devices for their deaf sisters, and that she was staying. And it was evident in the eyes of everyone in the room. Everyone believed. Yun said she would send a letter to the Han clan.
The eastern trade routes pass through Calderon. The Han clan has influence, not military, commercial. If the Han clan cuts off the supply of medicinal herbs and spices to the empire, it will hit Calderon's treasury harder than any sword. Tobias said nothing. He sat and stared at the table. Then he looked up and said he would speak with his father.
Everyone fell silent. Corven, the Inquisitor, a man who could turn a workshop into a py with a single word.
Tobias said his father was not an evil man, that he believed in the flame, but that he had seen Dan's lamps lighting up the city. He'd seen children learning in school. He'd seen his own son become a different person. Tobias said he'd try.
He wouldn't promise, but he'd try. Dan nodded. Then he said he had a plan. Not a military one, an engineering one. He unfolded the map he'd been sketching for the past few weeks. Brackenford, walls, gates, and lines. Hundreds of lines, wires, lamps, search lights, telegraph stations. He ran his finger along the map and explained, "Sarch lights along all the walls and fortifications, powerful ones, with reflectors made of Lilith's silvered glass, directed light.
At night, they would turn the approaches to the city into a zone as bright as day. An army accustomed to fighting in the dark would find itself in the light.
Every soldier visible, every movement visible. But the defenders behind the walls remain in the shadows. Telegraph lines run along the walls. Every defensive sector is connected to the command post by wire. Instant communication, coordination. The attackers don't have that. They relay orders by couriers. That takes minutes.
The defenders have seconds. Audible alarms. Electric bells at every gate. A sentry spots movement and presses a button. A call to headquarters. Meera was counting. Shiva looked at the map with the eyes of a professional soldier.
She said it wasn't a fortress, it was a trap. The army enters the illuminated zone and loses the main advantage of a night assault, darkness. Dan said that was exactly right. One night, Lilith fell asleep at the table, her head resting on her folded arms next to a cooling flask. Dan took the shawl she wore in winter off the hook. He draped it over her shoulders. She didn't wake up, but in her sleep, she turned her head slightly toward him. He stood there watching. Then he went back to work. In the morning, Lilith woke up.
She saw the shawl. She looked at Dan, who was sitting across from her with eyes red from lack of sleep, and she said nothing. But from that day on, when she went home in the evening, she left the shawl in the workshop every evening on the same hook in case she fell asleep again or in case he got cold. Ellie noticed. Ellie noticed everything. She walked up to Dan and asked if he was going to marry Lilith or not because the whole town was already waiting and he was dragging his feet. Ailen took charge of the political organization of the northern city's coalition. So Yun brought the Han clan's influence to bear. Tobias volunteered to speak with the Inquisitor. Dan presented a plan for the city's light defense, featuring search lights and telegraph lines along the walls. Construction took three months. Calderon's army arrived at the end of the second year. 6,000 soldiers under the personal command of Sebastian Vale. They set up camp 2 km from the city. On the plane between the highway and the forest, Dan could see them from the walls. Tents, banners, horses, supply trains. This wasn't a gang. It was an army organized, disciplined, with siege engines, with an engineering corps, with medics. Vale hadn't brought a mob, but a machine for capturing cities.
Meera stood next to Dan on the wall and counted the tents. Then she said there were about 6,000, maybe more. Bracken Ford had 200 volunteers.
