Heat is the number one weather-related killer in the United States and globally, making extreme heat events critical public health concerns. During the hottest May temperatures in decades, significant regional temperature variations occur due to wind direction and geographic factors—east winds from the Atlantic create cooler conditions (Boston at 64°F) while southwest winds from land create extreme heat (Philadelphia at 95°F). These variations can produce severe weather boundaries that affect different areas differently, with some regions experiencing record-breaking temperatures while others remain relatively cool.

Millions Under Heat Alerts As The Hottest May Temperatures In Decades ArriveAdded:
That's Philly. Look at the temperature, 95°. We talk about weather hazards.
Number one weather-related killer in the United States and globally is heat. And we're talking about some temperatures middle of this week that's approaching that dangerous territory. Enough that we have uh some heat alerts that have been issued through the middle of this week.
Another 80 or so uh record high temperatures expected. There's Philly.
Uh keep in mind the average this time of the year is in the mid-70s. The highest May temperature uh ever recorded uh 97. The last May 95 day was last year, if you can believe it. So, that's not all that rare. What was that number we saw? We're we're approaching uh the old was 96. So, we're approaching uh the all-timer this afternoon for Philly. Heat advisories up through tomorrow. That whole stretch of I-95, both sides of the Delaware River. Philly up to New York. Got the northern part of Delaware included in that, too. And much of southern New England, New Hampshire, big chunk of Massachusetts, uh Rhode Island away from the water and northeastern Connecticut. Uh heat alerts in effect through tomorrow with these record highs. So, 97 in Philly, that ties for your hottest May day on record.
Smashed the old uh daily calendar record, 94 from back in 1962.
Uh 96 in Philly. Wind direction is everything here. 93 in D.C. It's just 82 just 82 in New York. But, look at that with an east wind coming off of the Atlantic. Boston is 64°. So, the marine layer wins out. It doesn't tomorrow.
Imagine that, 64 right now. There's your forecast high temperature tomorrow, 93°, which should smash the old record high temperature. The difference between an east wind coming off the water and a southwest wind coming off the land. And it can't be overstated. 98 in Philly. Uh that would own the all-time May record on its own. Tomorrow, we get to a 98. Uh Tuesday's forecast in DC, 97. There have been only three hotter days on record in the month of May, anytime in the month of May. Keep in mind, I mean, we're in the middle third of this. You would Conventional wisdom would suggest expect some of these May records to be right at the end of the month, but uh we're still what what could be considered the middle of it, and we're challenging them and in some cases breaking them. Tomorrow, 97 DC, 95 in in New York, 88 in Pittsburgh.
And keep in mind this clash right here, Des Moines a high temperature of just 59, but Cincinnati 87. That's the front, that's the boundary that Nick was showing us, uh produces more in the way of severe weather tomorrow and some of that into Wednesday, too.
