In backcountry skiing, when snow conditions are unpredictable or poor, focusing on low-angle terrain while maintaining strict safety awareness and avoiding steep or avalanche-prone areas allows skiers to still have an enjoyable and safe experience, as demonstrated by a group who successfully navigated challenging conditions by sticking to gentle slopes and making conservative route choices.

Powder Never Felt This Good...
Added:I've discovered to have fun in low angle terrain, you just have to have no snow for three weeks. [laughter] [music] [music] >> Tom has his girlfriend's birthday on Monday, so the aim is to >> get home safe.
>> Yeah.
>> We won't make him in the box.
>> Yeah. [laughter] box.
What a birthday.
[music] It's the day we've been waiting for. It could possibly turn out that we've been waiting for the wrong day. Just a cesspool of weird conditions at the moment. It was hailing a minute ago, wasn't it? But it has snowed. Snowed a fair bit. The wind has been going literally in circles for the last few days. A week ago, it was sunny and icy.
Then the snow melted. Then it froze again. Then it melted. And now it's snowed. And we're out here at Curoro trying to find some pow. We'll find pow.
But whether it's actually skiable, we will soon find out. So Tom's red lighted any avalanche red zones on out mapap.
I'm glad someone said that cuz it's just not worth it. You know, we don't really know what's going on. So anyway, yeah, we're going to go explore. Maybe we'll see. And uh see what we find. Hey, we might even turn back. [music] [music] >> We've been making use of a skin track that's been cut for us. There's a group of two just above us, but it has shot us a little bit off course. Obviously, the goal today was to not step into consequential avalanche terrain. So, we're just going to follow this up partway that we found a the lowest angle descent back into the the gully bottom that'll get us towards the ridge that we're looking to ride. And um we're just going to use that as a bit of a test just to feel out the conditions. [music] [music] >> I'm going to see how I feel after this to be honest like with sketchy wise and >> you see the little Buddha.
>> Yeah. Whatever I can drop first.
>> So how so left of the Buddha?
>> Left of the Buddha.
All right, boys.
>> Yeah.
Come in, Quinn.
>> You went the wrong direction, but are we good to drop?
>> Yeah, everything seems fine. It's not super steep.
>> Max is dropping now.
>> That was fun.
I've got eyes on Tom.
>> I'm pretty sure it's literally straight up that going up.
>> Let's get down here and we have a we have a vote. Those guys did a laugh.
Woo.
I probably shouldn't have been standing directly underneath it.
>> Yeah, >> that's my stupid idea. And there's a gully right below us. So, perfect little terrain trap. [laughter] >> Maybe we just hike up this and ski these trees. Like, that looks pretty mellow.
>> Yeah, >> that could be cool. We'll do a second run.
>> Go back home on the >> Yeah, I just heard Max do like there's a woo there. So, if we keep it low angle like what we just skied, >> we're sweet.
>> What we just skied was 30. So, >> yeah, we just punch a track up here for as long as we can be [ __ ] So, the consensus is that was fun. So, we're going to go pick something else.
slow angle and have another round of fun. Definitely sticking away from anything that is steep today. It's just >> this pack even which I tested a little bit. It was a bit earlier.
>> Tom has his girlfriend's birthday on Monday. So, the aim is to >> get home safe.
>> Yeah.
>> We won't make him in the box [laughter] in the box for >> [music] [music] >> Baby [music] [music] [music] Roger. Roger.
>> All right. So, what's the plan? Are we stopping at the valley bottom?
>> Stop at the valley bottom, regroup, >> and then decide whether we want to walk up here or traverse around the creek.
>> I don't know how how long this is.
Met e.
Oh, this snow is so sick.
Ew.
>> Ew.
>> Ew.
That was sick.
>> It's not the full powder, but >> No, but it's like quite >> It's quite good. Yeah. Where'd Sam go?
You kept going.
>> I hit a tree over there.
>> He hit a tree.
>> I do that again.
>> Yeah, same here. I reckon we go back down where the >> track is.
>> Yeah.
Yeah, actually the skin track's just here.
>> We could just transition and hit the skin track from there.
>> On the tubes. Didn't know Tom be out here. Master chefing.
Look >> at that. A grilled salmon on a giri.
>> Should I have a little one of these?
>> Some smoked cheese.
>> Smoked cheese as well.
>> Don't skimp out in the back country.
>> I hope you kiss me with that mouth.
>> Where's Eddie with a smorggas board?
Here I am eating Kit Kat Nagiri. Tom's got a [ __ ] platter.
>> French man. How do you rate that cheese?
>> Oh, that's >> I won't consider it's cheese. [laughter] >> Of course you won't.
>> All right, lap number three.
>> Let's go.
Yeah.
>> Dropping in three, two, one.
Oh, [ __ ] What did I just hit?
Ouch.
Give me a sec. I just hit a death cookie and then hit a tree.
>> Are you good?
>> Yeah. Yeah, I'm fine. I didn't even see that. Just a big ice chunk. That hurt.
All right, I'm all good. Um, dropping again in 3 2 1.
Where's Quinn?
Damn it. [laughter] >> Yo, >> I got my camera.
>> All right. All good. Hold up.
Not close enough.
>> Damn it. Sorry.
>> Do a turn really close to me.
>> Dude, that hurt. E, I just hit this big ice chunk that I didn't like think was ice and like I was lucky I wasn't going very quick. I can totally see how you [ __ ] break [ __ ] hitting a tree. That hurt. All right, I'll go first. I got the big fat boy skis.
E, dude, it's absolutely dumping.
>> Oh, yeah. Yeah.
>> Wait.
Well, oh yeah, this is the other one. Ah, [ __ ] [laughter] Don't get too excited. There's another crossing here. Dropping in.
>> E.
Oh, [ __ ] That's a big compression. I nearly pooshooted.
Nice.
>> Damn it.
[laughter] >> I knew it was going to happen. Tom, show us how it's done.
>> Like real like, >> hey, dude.
>> Look like he just dropped into pipe.
Crazy to think this would have all been ice like two days ago.
>> What do you reckon, mate? Good day.
>> Well deserved nigiri shrimp mayo.
>> Where do you get the shrimp mayo ones from? I can't find them anywhere.
>> It's I think this one is from Lawson or seven.
>> Which one? Which Lawson? We're on 711 >> anyway. We're talking about skiing >> anyway. No, no, no. The the skiing was pretty good. It was a good surprise.
Sketchy on the first aspect that we ski, but uh we found out like safe line and we had good fun. Yeah, but safety was the most important. Safety.
>> We always Tom, do you want to add anything?
>> Um, >> did you have fun? It's probably It's Remember it's March the 8th.
>> I had a really great day.
>> Pretty good.
>> And we made some smart choices, I think.
>> I think so. I think [snorts] so. We're still alive.
>> Yeah, that's the main thing.
>> Yeah, like there were lots of signs that were a bit sketchy >> and we noticed them and we didn't go anywhere near the [ __ ] terrain.
>> Well, um Mhm.
>> Everyone's single. I've discovered to have to have fun in low angle terrain, you just have to have no snow for 3 weeks. [laughter] No snow for 3 weeks, then anything with power is fun. So, yeah. Anyway, no, it was good. I had zero expectations today, which is I guess probably one of the best things that makes it Yeah. Like it's, you know, if you come out expecting the world and it's not the world, then you're pissed off. But >> it was a nice surprise.
>> It was a very nice surprise considering the last few weeks. Anyway, leave your thoughts in the comments. Appreciate you watching and I'll see you next time.
