Dog that had just one hour left

[00:00:00]No one wanted her. She was 1 hour away from being euthanized. And I said, "We have to take care of this baby." My name is Jennifer and this is Olive's story for Geo Beats.

[00:00:08]>> You want me to tell Papa about how cute you are? I came across her photo looked like she had tears in her eyes because there was a woman that had gone to visit the shelter and was hoping that she could get her taken off the euthanasia list. Something about this photo and I showed it to my fiance and he literally said to me, "I have to be her papa."

[00:00:25]>> You know about papa? Oh, you're very cute.

[00:00:30]>> Side on scene and we said we'll take her. And so someone was able to pull her out of the shelter on the day that was to be her euthanasia day. They opened up the van and she ran right to us. That was the very first time we ever met her in person.

[00:00:47]>> It's almost like she knew. I mean there were people everywhere standing around because they were all waiting for their dogs as well. And she ran right up to us.

[00:00:54]>> Girl, that's a baby.

[00:00:55]>> I love you. It's a baby.

[00:00:57]>> She was trying to figure out, you know, is this my house?

[00:01:03]We had a lot of toys, brand new toys for her and we had some toys from our previous dog. So, she just kind of got to understand like this is a dog house.

[00:01:15]We've taken her to parks and she runs so fast. She keeps up with a greyhound.

[00:01:25]She gets the zooies for an hour. We call it her witching hour. It's usually like 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. That happens every day. She loves to run. It's just her favorite thing.

[00:01:36]>> Oh, come here. Soon you're going to go to grandma. It was about 7 weeks ago.

[00:01:40]She started limping. We couldn't figure out what it was. I brought her into the doctor. She said, "Soft tissue injury.

[00:01:46]Let's put her on some medication for pain." But her limping got worse to the point where she stopped using her arm completely. and I said, "Let's do an X-ray." And the doctor came back in and she just was like, "I can't I can't believe that she could see a mass on her arm." It was devastating to find this out, especially knowing like we just lost our other dog when she was six and we're still recovering from that. So, with osteio saroma, if we did nothing and just kind of managed her pain, she could live for a few weeks, a couple of months. But if we wanted to try to give her a chance to fight, which we did, we took the most aggressive route for her.

[00:02:37]>> Too fast.

[00:02:38]>> Too fast.

[00:02:39]>> She's just so young and so full of life that we wanted to give her that chance.

[00:02:43]>> Don't be nervous.

[00:02:44]>> We also heard about a clinical trial through Yale. That's an imunotherapy vaccine that is showing really promising results and extending dogs life specifically with osteocaroma.

[00:02:55]>> You ready, Michael?

[00:02:56]>> She got accepted to the trial. So, she's gotten the vaccine twice now. Mama takes care. Mama protects.

[00:03:02]>> At that point, it can be a year, maybe two years when dogs are lucky. I'm a good girl. We're constantly watching her relearn how to do things now with only one front leg. And it's just really interesting to watch her little tiny brain figure things out.

[00:03:19]>> Oh wow.

[00:03:21]>> It's gotten a lot easier cuz I feel like she's not in pain anymore. And she kind of acts like nothing happened at this point. She acts like she's just back to normal. I would want her to know how happy she makes me to be her mama.
