The Ottoman Empire established the kafes (cage), a royal prison within Topkapi Palace, to prevent succession wars by confining rival princes instead of executing them; however, this system produced rulers like Sultan Ibrahim (1640-1648), who spent years locked away and subsequently ruled erratically, demonstrating that institutional solutions to political problems can create unintended consequences for governance.
