Why the Problem of Evil Fails

[00:00:01]Hello everyone. This is a reputation of the problem of evil. I honestly think that the problem of evil is a pretty bad argument to you know, argue that God doesn't exist.

[00:00:13]But nonetheless, it needs to be addressed. So, uh first of all, let's define really quick what is the problem of evil?

[00:00:21]Uh there are two types. We have the logical problem of evil, which is it is logically impossible for evil [snorts] and God to coexist.

[00:00:30]If an all-powerful, all-good God exists, even the presence of a slight amount of evil is a definitive reputation of his existence.

[00:00:39]And then the evidential problem of evil is God and evil could possibly coexist, but the sheer amount, intensity, and {quote} pointless evil and suffering that does exist makes the existence of God very unlikely.

[00:00:56]>> [clears throat] >> Now, there's a few presuppositions that come with um these arguments. We have um both CE uh LPOE and EPOE assume objective morality exists. So, to argue that a {quote} true evil exists at all, you must first affirm that there is an objective moral guideline in which constitutes true, right, and wrong.

[00:01:21]If morality is merely a social construct or evolutionary byproduct, so subjective morality, then evil is just a personal dislike, not real, and not an objective wrong.

[00:01:37]By using objective evil as a premise, you automatically assume a transcendent moral grounding that is difficult, if not impossible, to justify without God.

[00:01:50]>> [clears throat] >> Then continuing with the presuppositions, um the argument typically misrepresents the term omnipotence stating that an all-powerful God should be able to make the quote perfect world where free will exists but evil does not. This entire basis assumes that God can do the logically impossible. This is more prevalent in the LPOE than it is in the EPOE.

[00:02:16]Um but they still would so sort of misrepresent omnipotence.

[00:02:23]Um omnipotence really entails that God can do all things logically possible um because God by his nature is the foundation of logic. He cannot contradict his nature. So just as God cannot make a square circle he cannot force a creature to choose good while they also have free will.

[00:02:46]Um this leads us to transworld depravity. We have three options now um for what God would be able to do because God cannot force a free choice, he'd be left with these three options which are he creates a world of robots who are perfectly good but have no real love, morality, or freedom.

[00:03:05]So you know, just forcing us to love him.

[00:03:09]Um God does not create, he remains alone. No life, no beauty, nothing for him to love besides himself. Now of course um God's uh choice to create was not out of necessity and it was definitely not because he was lonely.

[00:03:24]It was simply just a free choice for him to share his love, his beauty, and his life with other creatures.

[00:03:33]Right? And then um the last option which is what is going on now, he creates a world of free beings where love is real freedom is present but there is a necessary risk of evil as a byproduct.

[00:03:48]So continuing with this, we can say that a world of free beings who can freely choose God and freely love God is infinitely more times valuable than a world of programmed machines.

[00:04:02]Therefore, the quote existence of evil isn't a flaw or glitch in God's power, but the price of our freedom.

[00:04:11]And then, of course, again, God's choice to create was a free choice driven by a plan of sheer goodness to share his love and life with others. It was not a necessity.

[00:04:23]>> [clears throat] >> So, why free will exist risks evil quote existing.

[00:04:30]If you are quote free to choose A, but choosing B is an impossibility, then there's no real freedom.

[00:04:38]For true freedom of will to exist, there must be a power of contrary choice, the ability for us to choose the contrary.

[00:04:47]God, by giving us the free choice to love, by the very definition of freedom, also gives us the ability to not love or to hate.

[00:04:57]Evil, then, is only the privation of what is good, since God only created the ability to have contrary choice, but he didn't necessarily create the contrary choice itself.

[00:05:10]Right? So, we can private from the goodness of God, but God did not create the thing that we are privating to.

[00:05:18]We're simply just going away from it, right? So, evil in itself does not have existence. God did not create evil.

[00:05:27]Ex- so on and so forth.

[00:05:29]Right.

[00:05:32]Uh the heaven objection, this is something that, you know, still needs to be addressed. Um it's not a great objection, but if God can create a world, heaven, where everyone is perfect, why not start us there?

[00:05:47]Or why not make this world like that?

[00:05:49]First of all, freedom is a journey, right? Earth is where we choose our character. So, we choose who we are through experience, through growing. We were built and designed and made and created to grow and learn, right? We have limited knowledge that grows and learns and gains more knowledge as we grow and learn.

[00:06:13]Heaven is simply just the perfection of the well, not the removal of it.

[00:06:19]Um when a person has completely experienced the reality of God and the consequences of evil on Earth, they choose God so completely that they no longer desire to sin. And of course, through purgatory, um you know, we're purged of any remain of the stain of original sin in which we were given.

[00:06:38]Then continuing with this, um about angels, even angels created in the immediate presence of God with a perfect environment, they were given a choice, right? And even then, evil happened. The fall of Lucifer proves that. The fall of the angels in heaven proves that, right? Even some will private from the goodness of God even if they are entirely with God in the perfect environment, some still may rebel.

[00:07:09]Evil is simply just a consequence of libertarian free will, no matter the environment.

[00:07:15]Okay?

[00:07:16]And of course, unlike humans who learn and grow over time, angels, um like Lucifer and the third that fell away, made a single eternal choice due to their superior knowledge, right? It was a single and eternal choice rather than us who learn and grow and make mistakes and learn from those.

[00:07:36]They were given a higher form of knowledge, and so therefore, they're more accountable.

[00:07:43]Um then comes the argument from natural evil. Um this is mainly um how EPOE is run. Usually run it with natural evil.

[00:07:53]So, we're going to address that really quickly.

[00:07:55]Um the argument from natural evil, which is like natural disasters, diseases, and stuff, argues that it is logical to say that evil that stems from free choice can coexist with God.

[00:08:08]But it does not explain the natural evils of the world such as natural disasters or diseases or anything like that.

[00:08:16]Um first our argument this argument comes from John Hick and um inspired by Irenaeus uh basically argues that natural evils are necessary for many virtues in which God intended for his creation to grow and come come closer to him.

[00:08:33]Certain virtues such as courage, compassion, and perseverance cannot exist in a world without such evils, right? So, God maintains a quote distance so that humans can freely choose to love him rather than being coerced by his presence. So, he allows for evils to exist, right? Evils are necessary for this existence and ultimately a part of his plan and the greater good because virtues stem out of them. Right? We have virtues that come from these evils that God intended and these these virtues would not exist if these evils, you know, weren't prevalent in the world.

[00:09:16]And um this also follows with skeptical theism. So, um basically following the soul-making theory, we can also argue that um there would be an ultimate greater good for all evils, every single one.

[00:09:30]Simply our limited cognitive abilities just restrict us from knowing or understanding all these virtues that do derive from these evils, right?

[00:09:41]Ultimately, the argument from natural evil commits the no see 'em fallacy, basically just assuming that because one cannot see a reason for something, no such reason exists.

[00:09:53]But in the same way that a toddler might not understand why they're giving a paint why they are given a painful vaccine, we might not understand all the virtues that come from the natural evils that are prevalent in the universe.

[00:10:09]So, to summarize, free will is necessary in God's creation for real love to be present. Evil is simply the privation of what is good and is the necessary consequence of our free will.

[00:10:20]No matter the environment, evil is ultimately going to be a consequence of one's free will.

[00:10:25]And then natural evils are necessary for many virtues that otherwise would not exist.
