Kremówka is a traditional Polish cream cake with flaky pastry and cream filling, famously associated with Pope John Paul II, while Karpatka is a similar cake with a harder pastry shell and chocolate flavor; both are considered must-try desserts in Polish bakeries, with Kremówka featuring lighter, less sweet cream and Karpatka offering a more substantial texture.

We Tried Poland’s MOST Famous Cream Cakes 🇵🇱Added:
I made a video the other day about Karmelicka Street, but I missed something important that I should have come back for. Just behind us is >> Cukiernia Cukiernia Day.
Could it be that Cukiernia?
>> No, no, no, no. I know. I tried it several times. It didn't work. And they do the most famous cream cake in well, one of Poland's most famous cream cakes. Apparently, it was Pope John the Paul Pope John the Paul Pope John Paul the Second's favorite cream cake when he was younger.
And well, you can get it in most of the bakeries, but this one apparently is a really good one.
>> And it's called?
>> Kremówka.
>> Brawo, dziadku.
>> So, today we're going to have kremówka at >> And Cukiernia Cukiernia Day.
>> Just try saying that.
Let's go.
I'm excited. Oh, man.
Kremówka. Flaky pastry. I'd say it's like a cream slice, Polish style.
Bakery.
Look at Look at the meringues.
This is so close to Old Town, folks.

>> This was called carp.
>> Karpate, karpufka.
>> Karpufka?
Karpufka?
>> Karpufka, karpufka.
>> Karpufka.
>> Karpufka.
>> Karpufka kremufka. This is the one we came to see.
The famous one that Pope John Paul II loves.
This one, another customer said, "This is also famous. You got to try it."
And I think that looks like pretty good advice.
In the wizardy wizarding cafe. Full of local people, not a tourist in sight.
Bye-bye.
>> [laughter] >> Bye-bye.
Bye-bye.
>> [laughter] >> That's the friendliest welcome we've ever had in a cafe. I know Nina's happy face.
This is Nina's happy face. She's a good judge. She's a good judge of these.
Very light. There we go.
I'm not very experienced at kremufka.
>> Be gentle to kremuvechka.
>> Yeah, it's all tastes the same.
Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
That is the freshest fresh cream.
And you're right, it's so light. It looks like it's going to be so heavy.
But it's super light. Oh, that is outstanding.
>> And it's >> This >> less sweet than in other places. More natural kind of >> Mhm.
Oh my word, that is >> Sweet, but not toxic sweet.
>> Mhm.
Out of this world. Yeah, still don't know how to break these.
>> Take my second fork.
We need the knife.
>> We need a knife. There must be a definite way to do it.
I'm going to Okay.
>> [music] >> Mhm.
Also spectacular. It's got a harder shell.
So, less light flaking or a harder pastry.
And the chocolate flavor, but then some of the flakiness, too.
Oh, that Thank you. Whoever that lady was that suggested this, thank you.
Thank you. That is That is truly outstanding. Wow.
Wow.
All right, we've got to try.
Oh.
>> [laughter] >> And finish the job.
>> [laughter] >> Yeah.
But you still kremówka still your number one, yeah?
>> Yeah.
I love custard cream and whipped cream together.
>> And flaky pastry. This is more again >> and the chocolate cream in the center.
>> And harder pastry.
>> So, here we are after our tasting degustation of kremówka and karpatka cakes.
>> This is an absolute 10 out of 10 must do for visitors.
It was 55 zloty only for Neda and I to have a bit of Polish history. Two wonderful two wonderful cream cakes, tea, a nice pot of tea, coffee uh for 55 zloty.
And here we are we did a video recently on the west side Krakow where we're sitting on the west side now. This is Karmelicka 15.
Karmelicka 15. Just so close to Old Town. So easy to do. If you want to watch the rest of Karmelicka Street we made a video on this recently. You can check it on Panoramic Krakow.
>> What's the video called?
>> It's called West Side Story, Karmelicka Street.
>> Great.
So you remember this kremowka is called Wiedeńska.
Wiedeńska.
>> Okay.
>> It's like Viennese style.
>> Viennese style, is that >> made in Viennese style.
>> Is that the one you had or that's different?
>> It's the one we had. And the difference to classic kremowka is that it's made in Poland.
Wiedeńska kremowka includes a layer of >> custard >> Then a layer of custard cream, vanilla custard, then whipped cream and then one more layer of pastry. And classic one doesn't have custard inside.
>> Ah, okay.
>> That will be the difference.
>> Look at this one. It's called psychotka.
That's for crazy people.
>> Right, right.
>> Yeah, psychotka.
>> I don't hear don't hear that. Charlotte cake.
>> Pychotka. Pychotka. I thought it said psychotka.
>> [clears throat] >> Pychotka. Not not psychotka.
I thought it said psychotka like crazy but it's pychotka. It it's very delicious. Szarlotka, cream cheese.
This is the takeaway counter, so get some to go. And there's the legendary kitchen back there.
Wow.
Definitely recommended. 10 out of 10, must do.
