[00:00:00]There's a moment, usually somewhere around two to four months, when a baby sees their own hand float into view and freezes. You can almost see the question forming, what is that? And then, slowly, the realization, that's mine. I did that. This is called hand regard, and it marks one of the earliest steps in building a body schema, the brain's internal map of the body and how it moves through space. What's happening beneath the surface is remarkable. The brain is cross-referencing motor commands with visual feedback, beginning to connect what the baby wills with what the baby sees. Each time they move a hand and watch it respond, the connection strengthens. The baby stares and stares and stares, and in that staring, something foundational is being assembled. Not yet a sense of self in the way we'd recognize it, but the raw material from which one will eventually be built. A first draft written in the language of movement and touch.
