So, we'll just begin with a shuffled deck of cards.
And we'll give it a three shuffles. I think that'll probably be enough, don't you?
Okay, very good. What a mess.
>> [snorts] >> Now, you can have one or more spectators for this. Um I might assume we have two since we're going to be working with two piles. Uh but one spectator could make all of the choices. Okay, so I'm going to deal out uh two piles of eight cards. 5 6 7 8. So, I believe that's eight.
Okay?
And now at this point, for each of the piles, so if I have two spectators, I would just turn to the spectator A over here on the left, can you tell me the name of your favorite card in the entire deck? And maybe they'll say ace of diamonds, okay? So, we'll go ahead and just spell that full name, A C E O F D I A.
M O N D S. Okay, very good. Uh spectator B on the right, do you have a favorite card in the deck? Three of hearts, okay?
Uh T H R E E O F S. Oh, no, H.
H E A R T S. You said three of hearts, I believe. And now from this point, what we're going to do actually is kind of split each of these into two piles of four, okay?
So, we'll just kind of do a Klondike alternate Klondike. So, we have two piles of four there.
And then same thing here.
Klondike, left to right, left to right, like this, and two more piles of four.
Now, I need each of you for the two piles that are in front of each of you to state a random suit, okay? So, for the first packet of four, spectator A, what suit should I spell? Spades, okay?
S P A D.
e s. Okay. What about for for this one, spectator A? Clubs. Okay. c l u b s. Okay. And then spectator B on the right, what would you like for this one?
Hearts. Okay. h e a r t s. Now, you are free to choose a different or the same suit. It's up to you. Spades. Okay, that's fine. a s p a d e s. Okay, very good. Now, spectator A on the left, can I have you tell me how I should pick up the piles? Far right, the center, far left, the remaining one. Okay, very good.
>> [snorts] >> Now, at this point, I'll just go ahead and give it a charlie a shuffle, and I can add a link in the description below if you want to learn this messy shuffle, but more importantly, I'll have maybe spectator B randomly cut the packet wherever you would like and complete the cut. Oop. Whoop. And pick up the cards.
Now, at this point, we're just going to deal out the cards into four piles uh without going uh off the camera view best we can here. Okay.
Four piles. And now I have a written prediction off to the side that we're going to take a look at. So, just think about it. What could I possibly know for any of these piles given that we started with a well-shuffled deck of cards. Okay, well, let's just take a look.
You will produce random four-card piles.
Uh okay. [laughter] Uh is that impressive?
You would hope so.
Is there more? Oh, okay. Something here.
Except for one.
Hmm.
A four-ace pile. There There is really just no way that could be true.
Okay, so well, that must not be it, but let's just check what's in here.
Okay, that looks pretty random.
>> [snorts] >> Uh oh, couple of Oh.
Whoa, that Oh, okay. Well, that was pretty impressive. We had a good kind of a good run there. Uh see, why don't we go up here?
Okay, that's looking pretty random.
We're down to the final one, guy.
Okay.
Oh, boy, check this out. It's looking pretty likely.
Yes, indeed, we got it. That is amazing.
How in the world did the two of you make such a perfect series of choices that would lead to a confirmation of a prediction that was written before we even began this routine. That is amazing. Okay, so how do you do this?
Very simple.
Um I just began with the four aces at the top of the deck.
So, I start at the top, and then you just perform a riffle shuffle or any mixing that preserves the four aces at the top, okay?
And then from there, you just do everything that I did. Now, it's using some relatively new mathematics as of the last 10-20 years.
