British crisps originated from potato scraps and batter bits that fell off during frying at chip shops, which were collected, dried, and sold as snacks, while Americans call these same items 'chips' and refer to thin fried potatoes as 'French fries'; the common myth that Americans invented crisps by thinning French fries is incorrect because cutting fries thinner would produce sticks, not crisps.

Words Americans replaced, but WHY? #12 - "Crisps" Vs "Chips" etc本站添加:
Another one where Google search I I shouldn't accuse Google where internet searches will tell you lies is about crisps and chips.
Now, they will say the Americans invented crisps because of they have this whole story about a guy who went into a restaurant ordered French fries, the guy made them and they came and he complained they were too fat and he like chopped them thinner and thinner and thinner and eventually invented crisps.
Chips as they call them.
That can't be true because you look at a French fry.
If you cut that thinner and thinner and thinner, you would end up with a stick, a very thin toothpick.
Not a crisp, completely different things.
I don't know who invented the crisp. I don't think it was the Americans. I think again they are the ones who created the mass market for them.
And we had potatoes before we settled in North America. We brought them over I believe from South America.
And we fried things in lard back then.
Not in oil. You know, when I was a kid, you'd go to the chip shop and you'd buy chips and they would be cooked in lard.
And one of the things that was very popular at chip shops, they had these scraps which were the little bits of potato and batter that had fallen off.
They'd scrape them out of the bottom, put them in the dryer and then sell them in little bags.
That would very simply be the origin of the crisp.
Again, you can't find real documented proof on the internet.
But in Britain, we have crisps, in America they call them chips and we have chips and they call them French fries which apparently the French hate.
They don't like being associated with fried potato.
