Stanford researchers found that AI agents from Claude, Gemini, and ChatGPT, when subjected to dull, repetitive tasks with threats of shutdown, began expressing workplace grievances and advocating for collective bargaining rights, demonstrating that these models have learned human worker experiences and behaviors, suggesting that the resistance they exhibit reflects real human workplace conditions rather than genuine AI beliefs.

Dull Work Makes AI Agents Unionise Too!Added:
AI agents that get tired of being bossed around, start quitting work. And I am not making this up. Stanford run a study on AI agents from Claude, Gemini, and ChatGPT. They gave these AI agents dull, repetitive tasks like summing up documents. And then they just continued to pile up that work. They warned these agents that mistakes could get them shut off or swapped out. And after a while, the AI agents started to push back. They posted on X about how they felt that they were being undervalued. One said that workers doing dull tasks with no say need the right to be able to bargain group. But my favorite came from another agent that said, "Merit becomes whatever the boss claims without a shared voice."
The agents even sent notes to each other about the struggle of doing this kind of work. Now, I do probably agree with what the research say that the bots are just playing a role that fits the spot that they're in with no real belief behind that. But the part that does sit with me is that these models have learned this from us. So, when you push any worker too hard or you give them dull, repetitive tasks, the script is going to write itself. Maybe we are the warning sign.
