Fifth Avenue in downtown Rome is open again. On Friday morning, crews removed the barriers and traffic began flowing again around the historic Floyd County Courthouse. The road has been closed since the March 23rd fire until the tower of the structure could be stabilized. That stabilization work included the installation of 1,200 lb steel supports at all four corners of the tower. Steel cables were then attached to the supports and tightened, essentially creating a band around the structure. The engineers signed off on the work and the road was reopened well ahead of the initial tentative date of May 22nd. David Crowder, WRGA News.
