How MAD was Florentino’s press conference on a scale of 1-10? | ESPN FC Extra TimeAjouté :
Welcome into the latest edition of Extra Time. Shaka and Ali are here in the studio and Jules is joining us as well.
But first question tonight is from Sid Low who you've just spent some time with in Barcelona. Al >> and he said on a scale of 1 to 10, how mad was that press conference Florentino Perez and why is it 11?
It's it's I mean a hundred a thousand a million you what you cannot put a number on it. Now I don't know if we were able to physically tell the world how crazy this press conference was but can I use your paper here?
>> A few of my objects actually earlier to do this >> now. Yes. So he comes in and he has this it's a packet of paper right? Okay. And obviously notes of things that he wants to share with the world that the world doesn't need to know, but he wanted to share this with the world. And he starts going forward, forward, and then backwards. Let me look another. Let me see this piece of paper here. No, this one is not here. I'm not kidding when I say that he's over here. Look, while he's talking and he's talking about I have to uh I'm going to give up the subscription of uh this newspaper that my father got me that subscription almost 40 years ago. But let me tell you, I'm going to tell you something here. all the titles. Um, let me talk to you about the basketball titles. And I'm thinking, somebody help this man.
>> He's over here drowning and he thinks he's dictating how the press conference is going. And the truth is that the press conference was out of control from the moment he sat in front of the microphone. It was crazy, >> Jules. I mean it was it's not often we see Florentino Perez have to call a press conference and address in the media in this way and then for it to be this it was quite shocking wasn't it?
Yeah, I thought it was a disaster class completely. I mean, I don't think we will ever we see him for a long time doing something um similar. It's it reminds us of some politicians, you know, who sometimes lose it completely when they are in front of the media. And that's exactly what happened. He the wrong messages even some of the things he said like when he's when he talked about we didn't say that on the show, I forgot. There's a line about his, you know, he's a he has his construction company that has been really successful in Spain. He's one of the richest men in Spain anyway, but he said, "My construction company this year, uh, turn over billions and billions and billions of viewers." I like, "Okay." Right.
Yeah. Sure. I'm sure. I'm sure. So, just making up stuff as well as sending the wrong message about his own club.
>> All right. I won't make you weigh in on this one.
Jules, you've worked for US, French, and UK media and are very familiar with how other countries like Spain and Italy operate. Which country's media do you think is the harshest with players?
>> Wow, what a great question. This is um harsh harshest. I I don't know. I mean, the tabloids in the UK, Shaka knows too well, uh are obviously very hard. they used to be probably even even harder on the players than they are now uh for different reasons which you don't really have so much in in other countries maybe that kind of tabloid culture that is still very strong in in England for example um but if you look at the players ratings in France for leip newspaper for example there is this is proper proper ratings not just a bit like in other countries where you put a five out of 10 or six when you're not really sure in le they take it very seriously And sometimes it's is it's is painful reading if you're the player. Um obviously in Italy I think there's so much uh focus on football and so many newspapers and radio channels 24/7 TV channels everything that uh makes I think that quite difficult environment for some players and Spain is quite similar to Italy. in the US I think apart from us I'm not I don't really listen or watch the the other thing on soccer but I think we're pretty good I think we are the best we are very excellent you know so I would say probably the tablo tabloid culture as you know K as well is probably I think if you were a player the things that you're not really looking forward to experience >> can I also add maybe there's a limit on how many you know words you can use here but you can say Jules you've worked for and list every country on the planet You you can list every I was in Qatar with Jews and it was a sight to behold.
>> Was he like Florentino with the paper?
>> Oh yeah. Yeah.
>> Can I tell you? Let me tell you.
>> My construction company is worth $50 billion.
>> Honestly, >> my social was >> I'm going to Yeah. My >> It's a man in demand. Uh what um can I and and it's not it's not listed among those nor the ones that Jules works for, but the the Mexican media uh is extremely critical of their players and their federation and their teams and and where I find an issue is that it's not commeasured with what that national team has achieved in the world stage.
They have been a I suppose a serviceable team in the World Cup. It's a team that will add some flavor and spice to the competition, but they're not expected to be anything other than maybe get out of the group, maybe they'll win that next game, maybe they won't, and that's it.
And yet their the expectations of their own media about their own players and about their own teams is that they should be competing with Spain and Germany and Brazil and this and that and France and the other. And so it feels like the criticism of the Mexican media which happens round the clock. If you watch our our company ESPN in Mexico, they're having show after show after show just talking about football all the time. And a lot of it is it's from a negative point of view. And I I always watch it thinking this guy that you're criticizing, he's not that good anyways.
So like your expectations of him have to come down so that then we can have a real conversation as to what the real ceiling of this player individually is as well as what the ceiling of this national team is. Once we get to that level, then we can have a reasonable conversation. Everything else is unreasonable.
Jules has also worked for Deportes.
>> Oh, well then I'm telling you, every country on the planet, >> everybody. Uh, Farale, are you surprised that Carvajal was left off the Spanish team for the World Cup?
>> No. Um, he just he hasn't been playing under Area and that has been well documented and the relationship or lack thereof between him and the manager. But even when he has had chances to play, he just hasn't looked all that good. He's looked to me as steps low. He's looked to me as a guy who's still recovering from what was a terrible knee injury. And terrible knee injuries are terrible at any age, but especially when you're older as a player. It takes more time for you to be able to try to get back to something close to your best. And even his best right now, I don't think has been good enough to fully compete this season. And so therefore, I think it's the only decision that Luis de Laente had. Shaka, how essential is a sports psychologist to a squad? Does it have a significant impact on results or player welfare?
>> Uh, short answer to that is I don't know. I preceded all that back when I was playing sports psychology was not a thing.
>> If you were to manage now, would you bring in a sports psychologist?
>> Absolutely yes. Absolutely yes. Because while you know I could jokingly dismiss sports psychologists or certainly the impact as as I know it, I also understand the pressures that a lot of players are under. And we've also spoken time and time again over over the last few years about players who that pressure has taken a a psychological and and a physical toll. So if you're trying to get the best out of a player, you need to have at least that psychologist available for those who need it. Some may not. that is totally fine too. But I I if I were managing a team, absolutely yes, I'd have a sport psychology.
>> You also need you need somebody who the players can drain all their nonsense, right? When players have all sorts of thoughts about how this should happen, that should happen, this is happening, why isn't this happening? Just go and dump it on somebody. That used to be the assistant coach or the fitness guy. You would talk to the fitness guy. You get him in a corner and start telling him all sorts of different things about the team.
you need sort of an independent source that you can go and spew everything that you need to spew and get it off your system so that then whenever you go to train you're not carrying that with you.
I didn't think that that was important when I was a player but in looking back maybe there are certain things that I held on to Shaq that maybe I didn't need to.
>> Yeah, you you have a habit of holding on to things I've noticed. Well, apparently allegedly >> talking grudges.
>> That and your tone. That and your toone seems to be to work on those things.
Ali, not too late.
>> Not too late.
>> Ah, last question. With the EFL's worst case scenario now happening and Southampton advancing, should they be removed from the playoffs and replaced by Middlesbrough? If the league finds Southampton were spying, >> only one person should answer that question.
I just feel that it's unfair on the players for Southampton though because it's I'm sure they they knew nothing about it and so that would feel really hard even as a middle >> they did know when they watch the the tape of what of what was spied upon.
>> This is what I want you to do from this corner.
>> Do this. Trust me.
>> I have it on week. Trust me, I know it's good account that this is what they want to do.
Boy, >> I can't make you wait. You guys answer this. This is a tough one, right?
There's a lot of punishments it could be. But >> well, the one thing I've learned today is K watching Misbra is a whole lot better than Stevie watching Liverpool.
At least we could say that now because >> you know and >> cuz I was concerned, I'm not going to lie.
>> And her pain is in silence.
>> Yeah. Yeah.
>> It it nothing happen. It just hands go up and then they quickly come down. But what we do know as well is that while she's watching and she's in pain and she's stressed, she doesn't answer the calls of the producer.
>> Yes.
>> So the producer had to call me so that we can get a hold of Kay who was next to us.
>> I do present the show live though as it's going on in the background in my pain.
>> He was 3 ft away from you.
>> Yes.
>> I have presented a playoff final at Middlesbrough lost before and sat through the pain.
>> No, you're a professional.
>> But I know I'm a professional. I'm a Middlesbrough fan. We're used to disappointment.
I'm already all right. Thank you so much for sending in your questions, especially that one from Ezio. Great question.
>> And you can catch Jules in what TV station now?
Jews often do Usbekistan.
>> You know what? He always answers our bell.
