The development of film sequels depends on multiple interconnected factors including studio leadership changes, pandemic-related industry shifts, actor chemistry and audience reception, and franchise potential, as demonstrated by Jungle Cruise 2's delayed status despite strong on-screen chemistry between Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt and the film's $220 million worldwide gross.

JUNGLE CRUISE 2 (2026) Dwayne Johnson & Emily BluntAdded:
I'm Dr. Lily Houghton Allerton.
He did.
It's been a few years since Jungle Cruise first hit theaters and for a long time it really felt like a sequel was basically guaranteed. The movie had that classic adventure vibe, a fun story and most importantly, the chemistry between Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt was a huge part of why audiences connected with it. Because of that, people naturally assumed Jungle Cruise 2 was just a matter of time. But recently things have taken a bit of a turn, although it doesn't necessarily mean the journey is over.
Johnson shared an update that on the surface sounds pretty disappointing because he mentioned that Disney's plans for a sequel are not currently moving forward.
He explained that a lot changed after the COVID-19 pandemic, especially inside the Walt Disney Company, where new leadership came in and started shifting priorities.
Because of those changes, the studio looked at certain projects differently and Jungle Cruise 2 ended up being one of the ones that didn't move ahead right away. But even though that sounds like a setback, it's important to look at the bigger picture.
The pandemic really changed how movies were released and how studios measured success, so decisions made during that time were often complicated.
The first film, for example, didn't have a normal release at all. It was originally supposed to come out in 2020, but everything got delayed and when it finally released in 2021, it had a hybrid launch both in theaters and on Disney Plus through premier access.
That kind of release model made it harder to fully judge its box office potential because audiences had multiple ways to watch it.
Even with those challenges, the movie still managed to bring in over $220 million worldwide, which is actually pretty solid considering the circumstances. On top of that, audiences really seemed to enjoy it with a strong reception from viewers even though critics were a bit more mixed. So while the numbers might not have screamed instant sequel, they definitely showed that there's interest in this world and these characters.
Emily Blunt also addressed the situation in a pretty calm and understanding way.
She acknowledged that sometimes studios just decide not to move forward with certain projects even if the actors and creative team are interested.
And while [snorts] that might feel like a closed door, it doesn't mean the idea itself is gone forever. It just means it's not happening right now.
Looking back, it actually felt like Jungle Cruise 2 had a lot of momentum at one point. Shortly after the first movie was released, Disney confirmed that a sequel was in development with Johnson and Blunt expected to return.
Jaume Collet-Serra, who directed the first film, was also set to come back and Michael Green was reportedly working on the script. So there was a clear plan in place and it seemed like the franchise was heading in a strong direction.
But because of how the industry shifted after COVID, a bunch of projects across different studios ended up being delayed, reworked or paused and Jungle Cruise 2 seems to have been caught in that wave.
Studios became more cautious, especially when it comes to big budget sequels, because they want to be sure that every release will perform well in theaters.
Still, even with all that uncertainty, there are plenty of reasons to stay positive about the future of this sequel.
For one, Johnson's relationship with Disney is still very strong. He continues to work with the studio on major projects, including Moana's upcoming live-action remake and other collaborations.
That kind of ongoing partnership matters a lot because it means there's always a chance for conversations about Jungle Cruise 2 to come back around when the timing feels right.
The same goes for Emily Blunt, who is also staying busy with big projects like The Devil Wears Prada sequel.
Because both leads are still active and connected to major studios, it keeps the possibility alive even if things are quiet for now.
Another important factor is how much people genuinely like the pairing of Johnson and Blunt. Their on-screen dynamic was one of the biggest highlights of the first movie because it brought humor, charm and a bit of emotional depth to the adventure.
>> [music] >> Producer Beau Flynn has even talked about how strong that chemistry is and how much potential there is to explore their characters further.
He pointed out that the first movie only scratched the surface, which means there's still a bunch of story left to tell.
>> [music] >> And that's where things get really interesting.
Because if Jungle Cruise 2 does happen, it has the chance to grow into something much bigger.
The original movie was based on a Disneyland ride just like Pirates of the Caribbean and The Haunted Mansion, both of which turned into full-blown franchises. So there's already a blueprint for how this kind of story can expand over multiple films.
The sequel could easily follow Frank and Lily on another adventure, maybe involving a new myth, a hidden treasure or a different part of the Amazon. But it could also start building a larger world, introducing new characters and storylines that connect across multiple films.
That kind of approach would not only keep things fresh, but also give the franchise a stronger identity moving forward.
Because the first movie came out during such an unusual time, a sequel released under normal conditions could actually perform even better. A proper theatrical release without the complications of streaming at the same time would give it a clearer shot at reaching a bigger audience. And since the original already built a fan base, there's a good chance that more people would show up for the follow-up.
Another thing to keep in mind is how Disney tends to revisit ideas over time.
Just because something isn't happening right now doesn't mean it's off the table forever.
>> [music] >> Studios often circle back to projects when the timing is right, especially if there's still interest from fans and the creative team. And with Jungle Cruise, there's definitely still interest.
Even though Johnson mentioned that Disney didn't feel the need to revisit the property at the moment, that decision could change in the future.
Leadership shifts, market trends and audience demand all play a role in these choices. So while it might feel like the sequel is stalled, it's more accurate to say it's in a kind of waiting phase.
A little bit more fageous came out.
And honestly, that might not be a bad thing. Taking more time could allow the filmmakers to come up with a stronger story because instead of rushing into a sequel, they can really think about how to make it bigger and better.
That extra development time could lead to more creative ideas, deeper character arcs and a more exciting adventure overall.
At the end of the day, Jungle Cruise 2 still has a lot going for it. The original film proved that there's an audience for this kind of story, the lead actors clearly enjoy working together and the world itself has plenty of room to expand.
>> [music] >> Even though things aren't moving forward right now, all the pieces are still there.
So while the latest update might sound like a setback, it doesn't feel like the end of the road. It's more like the boat is paused for a while before setting off again. And when it does, there's a strong chance it could come back even bigger because the foundation is already there.
Because of all that, staying positive about a sequel actually makes sense.
The interest hasn't disappeared, the creative potential is still strong and the connection between the cast and the audience is still there.
So even though the journey has slowed down for now, it feels like there's still another adventure waiting somewhere down the river.
