US City Arcadia Mayor charged with acting as illegal Agent of PRC.

[00:00:10]Let me tell you guys why. Actually, let me show you guys why. Mayor of Arcadia is stepping down tonight after pleading guilty to charges accusing her of working as an agent for China. CBSLA's Lorie Perez has reaction from city officials. This is a stunning development and what one council member called a heartbreaking day for the city of Arcadia. Federal prosecutors say it is one part of a farreaching investigation into foreign influence on US politics.

Back in February, then Arcadia Mayor Eileen Wang didn't want to answer our Tom Wade's questions about her former fiance Yaoing Mike Sun being sentenced to four years in prison for being a covert agent for the People's Republic of China or PRC. Today, hours after admitting in federal court to doing the same and resigning as mayor of Arcadia, her attorney sent us a statement saying she wanted to apologize, adding events in Ms. Wang's personal life, including her trust and love for apparently the wrong person who ultimately led her astray, require her to step away from public service.

[00:01:22]Federal prosecutors say from 2020 to 2022, Wang and Sun posted Communist Party propaganda on a website they ran called US News, which purported to be a news website for the Chinese-American community and Chinese expats. Court documents released today alleged they took orders from the Chinese government to post pro-China content.

[00:01:53]This is May 11th by the way, which was yesterday. Federal officials said she has agreed to plead guilty to the felony which comes with a maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison. So what crime did she committed? According to her plea agreement here, uh, Wong and a colleague, Mike Sun worked on behalf of government officials of the People's Republic of China from the end of 2020 to 2022 to promote their interest by promoting PRC propaganda in the US. Sun is serving a four-year sentence already in prison.

[00:02:40]Wong and Sun operated the news website US News Center aimed at the Chinese American community and were instructed by the Chinese government official to pose proc.

[00:02:58]And here we have some example on what she said. Okay. In one instance in June 2021, a government official sent Wong, a Chinese government official sent Wong a link to a letter to the editor and published in the LA Times, Los Angeles Times, written by the Council General of the People's Republic of China. The peace refuted reports of the prosecution forced labor and abuse of ougy in Shing Jang or forced labor in the region's cotton fields or other sector and the US and several other countries have declared that Beijing policy against the Ugers among on to genocide and crime against humanity.

[00:03:57]For you guys, maybe this is just a random piece of news for me.

[00:04:03]She is my city's mayor. Well, she was until yesterday lived probably just a few blocks away from where I am right now. And I have been to Shing Jang many times and I'm very familiar with the cotton business there. So, it's likely that I know more about what is actually going on there than my ex- mayor and those US federal prosecutors combined.

[00:04:28]Was there or is there any human right violations in Shing Jang? Sure. If you uh really want to cherrypick and use the Western standard, well, Western double standards. Yes. Not just in Shing Jang, to a certain extent everywhere in China.

[00:04:47]Chinese government prioritize stability and overall social harmony then try to expand and protect every ounce of so-called human right. The narrative of Shing Jang human right violation is mainly a political tool to legitimize US foreign policy and in this case actions against uh China sanctions for example and also to shape domestic public opinions. Remember, propaganda is not exactly false information, but usually biased information used to serve political agenda. And the entire Shing Jang narrative fits perfectly in the definition of US propaganda. It's been overexaggerated. There's rarely any talk here in the US about the good things, for example, Chinese authority has done to the region of Shing Jang. And just to let you know, Afghanistan is next door to Shing Jang. And the United States spend what$8 trillion US dollar in that country. Trust me, if you get to pick a place to born and live in, you will definitely pick Shing Jang over Afghanistan. In fact, I think you will probably choose Shing Jang over many other countries in the region or in the world. In fact, and given the chaos that has been going around the entire world right now in Shing Jang, you will not starve. You will be properly housed and fed. You will be protected and won't be dragged into proxy wars, for example.

[00:06:17]You will not have to put your kids on a boat floating across the Mediterranean risking death driven by, you know, political instability, often caused by Western policy to begin with. And hell, I don't even think uh US propaganda works that well within America today, not even among its own population, given all the chaos in the Middle East right now. In my opinion, what happened here is that the mayor um had very good relationship with the Chinese community here in the United States and also back in China. And probably like me, she's not so happy with uh China being demonized all the time across mainstream media in recent times. I think majority of the Chinese uh immigrants share my opinion as well whether it is first generation or second or third generation here in the United States. So my guess is that she thought she's doing a good positive thing and easing the tension. I never visited her website. I can't even find it now to be honest. So I can share with you guys what exactly she posed and you guys can be the judge in that case as to how outrageous those polls were.

[00:07:35]In fact, according to the accusation here, the material she post was facing the Chinese community here in the United States. So they might not even be in the English language. They were probably written in Chinese. still should I consult a lawyer before I continue this channel? Because when I started this channel, my friend in real life was worried that I might get into trouble with the Chinese authority when I visit China. And they won't believe me when I said that I'm actually a little bit more worried about getting into trouble with the US authority because in China at least I have a clear understanding of what I can and cannot say on social media. But here in the United States, it is less predictable. Let's put it that way. Anyways, I will keep you guys updated and it's been a joy running this channel. No regret whatsoever. I think more dialogue is needed between Chinese and Americans. And this channel is designed to share geopolitical opinions from China and for people who want to have a mature and thoughtful conversation with a Chinese person in this turbulence era.
