A lap monitoring system for RC cars uses a transponder sensor attached to the vehicle that communicates with a phone app to track lap times, best laps, and race duration; proper setup requires configuring the minimum lap time threshold (typically 1-2 seconds for fast tracks) to ensure accurate counting, and the system can be enhanced with ghost racer features that allow racers to compete against their own previous lap times.

Losi NASCAR Driveway Racing with Lap Monitor Lap counter!Added:
What's going on guys? Uh just finished a little driveway race session with my father-in-law. Uh it's been a long time since we've got together and raced. And so, I decided to pick up a couple of these Losi NASCARs. Now, unfortunately, I bought two. I got the Dale and I was supposed to get a Dale Jr.
And that one showed up today was also a Dale.
Um So, we just ran them. You know, it really doesn't matter. Somebody just grabbed the wrong box, apparently. Uh but, you know, we were wanting to run, so we just ran the same car. Doesn't really matter. It didn't affect our racing at all. Once you get going, you're watching your car.
Anyways, just thought I would mention that. But, we had a great time out here.
I've got a bunch of clips of us running.
Uh but, I wanted to talk about what I've done for the setup here uh because it's it's really cool and we had a blast with it.
So, first off, these little Losi NASCARs are just some of the best money I've spent in a while. And I bought both of these. This is just 100% me. I'm not even going to do like a full review on these. There's tons of videos about these things out there. But, look, these the Dale cars were a little bit more.
They're like 189.
Whereas a lot of the other ones are like 169. But, these are a brushed four-wheel drive 12-scale car.
You could buy one for 169 bucks.
And then, it's some of the best fun you're going to have if you have a decent place to race. So, what I did is they they come completely RTR with a 1400 mA pack.
Don't you mean milliamp hours?
2S, 1400 milliamp hour pack.
LiPo, 2S, that's Spectrum 2S Smart Charge Stupid EC3 uh pack milliamp hours.
Somebody fussed at me for saying ma.
m a h ma hey ma you got any of them 1400 ma packs?
I don't know I'm a freaking redneck.
I know it's not a word. I'm not completely stupid.
I'm just dumb duh.
Now I bought an extra pack and I already had one from one of my other cars.
So we did have four packs. We would just throw two on the charger. You can see I actually have been using one of these 8 10s for my monster truck.
But we really didn't even need it. Just four of the 1400s kept us going. We would charge two while we ran two and we've had a blast. So I just wanted to talk about how great these cars are.
This is 100% just me no sponsorship, paid promotion, nothing like that. So what I did is I'm running the lap monitor system.
And this is not going to be a full like review on it or anything, but I wanted to show you guys how well it works. I do have a old video on the lap monitor system.
And basically you can see I used a Y splitter, connected it into the same plug that the fan here is connected to.
Ran it over and I got some double-sided sticky on that and then I wrapped a bread tie around it just to help hold it as well.
Now this out in the sun does kind of need to poke out the side of the car. So I routed it up here and popped just a small hole. So when I put the body on place the body and I make sure that that little sensor bulb sticks out right there. So that helps us get a reading from this right here.
And I wanted to talk about this because this thing works so well. Now I printed this little block but that is the lap monitor system right there.
It's just that little bitty thing. Uh you download an app for your phone and it will call out lap times. It will uh it starts the race, finishes the race race, counts your laps, counts your best lap. All of that. You can set a ghost racer. So, I'm going to show you guys I'm going to race against myself here in a second.
But, I also printed these little end pieces just for uh to give us something to go around, right? Now, first we had just tossed these out here. You'll see in the video and every time we hit them they go flying everywhere.
Well, I had some little sticky dots.
I just put the little sticky dots on them and now when you hit them they do not move. So, it's perfect. Those little things are perfect for these cars.
Uh so, I'll try to link all of that stuff. It It's all from Bamboo.
The files to print all of this stuff.
And it's working great for the lap monitor setup and this little mini track.
All right. So, I wanted to show you guys this lap monitor app here because in the running you're not really going to be seeing this.
Now, one thing you have to make sure you do like this little track that we're running the minimum lap time if that's 5 seconds we're getting in the three the high threes sometimes on this.
So, you're going to want to make sure it's like the minimum could be even 2 seconds because sometimes I would make a lap faster than 5 seconds and it wouldn't count it. So, it would just count every two laps that I did. Um and then you can do your duration of laps. We can just do let's just do 1 minute so that we can get a quick little sample here for you guys.
Uh countdown.
We're good. I'm going to start this lap here. So, you can race by laps if you want to just do 10 laps, how many ever laps you want to do or race by time.
So, we're just going to do race by time.
One minute Uh duration here.
So you can hear it count me down. Every time I pass that right there, it's going to count a lap. So that's why you want to make sure it's less than 5 seconds or whatever your track is.
If you're getting a 2-second lap, you want to make that 1 second, you know, minimum.
It was set on 5 seconds as a minimum a minute ago.
And when I would get a lap in the fours, it wasn't counting it. Now I'm driving one hand right now, trying to watch the camera, show you guys.
So I'm pretty sloppy at the moment.
But I'm going to show you I'm going to let this It's basically recording my laps right now.
And then we'll set this race, what I do here, as a ghost racer.
So next time I'll be racing against myself. I'll be racing against the laps that I just put down in this race.
So we're going to knock this out real quick, then I'm going to show you guys the ghost race.
All right, so I want to do a new race. I want to do this right here. I'm going to do a ghost racer. I want to select my ghost.
Um All right, so now we've got the ghost racer from my last session set up here.
Hopefully I got all of that. My phone shut off. I was recording with it, and it just shut off on me, so uh we've got our ghost racer. It shows me and our ghost racer.
And so you hear that?
That's the ghost.
So I'm going to go There went the ghost. There's me. Plus 2.04. And I'm plus 2.04 right now, it says. Lap, plus 1.79. Best lap.
Oh, and of course, now my battery's down. Lap, plus 1.52. Best lap.
So, you can race yourself. You'll hear my ghost go around every time it Hear that? So, that's my ghost. And then it keeps up with what you're running now. So, you're kind of racing yourself.
But, I've got a bunch of clips of me and my father-in-law actually racing each other. I'm going to put those in here and just kind of talk about these Losi cars. This is kind of a Losi car lap monitor.
It's not really a review, just kind of letting you guys know like this stuff is really fun. It's simple, pretty cheap if you wanted to pick up all of this. So, I'll link it all in the description if you're interested, but it's an absolute blast.
So, let's check out some of the running.
So, there's not really a full review of anything here or a lot to this video.
It's It's just something I've been having fun with and I wanted to share with you guys.
You know, I was adding it up and if you wanted to get into this system with two of these cars, the lap monitor, and two transponders that go in the car for the lap monitor to read, you're around 500 bucks, 5 to say 525 for all of that. So, if you've got somebody to go into it with you, that's wanting to race, you know, they split the cost with you or however you want to do it, but you know, for one car and the lap monitor system, you can be $300 or less probably and be set up to kind of race yourself and then maybe you can talk a buddy into buying one. So, I think there's a lot of fun here for the amount of money. And these little NASCARs, in my opinion, they're perfect the way they are out of the box. You know, this driveway here, I've got just enough room that we can kind of make some laps. We could actually lay out a little bit of a track.
But the the speed of them feels good.
You're on the 2S battery that comes with them.
I am probably going to pick up like the 2400 Spectrum pack, I think, or whatever, so we get a little more run time.
Um versus the 1400 that comes with them.
But, you know, like I said, with four batteries, we had plenty. We ran these things non-stop. I mean, we really never even gave them a break besides changing the battery, throwing it back out there and going again. And we ran these four probably a good 4 hours straight. I mean, straight. Like, run a battery out, take it over, swap, put a new one in it, and go again. And, you know, the motors never got too hot or anything like that.
I would feel a little warmth on them.
Now, it wasn't a super hot day, but it was pretty warm. And they did great. I mean, no heat issues, no problem whatsoever running non-stop back-to-back batteries through these things.
I just hung my phone on the swing there beside me, and we could hear it calling out, you know, when the start the the times and everything for our laps and stuff. So, you can connect it to a Bluetooth speaker, like connect your phone to a speaker and make it much louder if you need to, if you're in a bigger area or something, but um we could hear it just fine straight off of my phone.
Uh so, it's just so much fun, you know, and that's why I wanted to share these things with you guys because this hobby's so expensive at times.
Like, it's really cool when you can get something like this, a four-wheel drive car that's really, really good out of the box for $169 to $200.
Um I think it's just a great way to have some fun at home. I mean, if you got a couple kids, man, you can set up something in the driveway like this. You can go out to a parking lot, race around some you know, an island, some curbs.
You don't have to have the lap counting system. You can easily count your laps.
It's pretty easy to tell, you know, who's ahead, who's a lap ahead, behind, whatever. So, you wouldn't even have to pick that up. I just think it kind of adds to the fun and to the racing feel.
If you decide to print out the track pieces, uh there are several different There's turns and all sorts of things, so you could make whatever track layout you wanted. I just printed a couple end pieces to give us turn markers, but I would suggest using some of the sticky pads or something. I thought about just like some caulk on the bottom or a rubber sealant or something. Just any kind of little rubber mat under them or something to give them a little bit of grip, so that when you hit them with the car, they don't move, because you'll see in the running we're smacking those things around everywhere, and I didn't think of the sticky pad idea until we were almost finished, actually. So, I think that works well. You know, I used eight of those sticky pads total, and I think I bought 500 of them for like $7.
So, if for the price, it's going to take a while to go through 500 of those things, and they're actually still stuck to the driveway now. We had a little rain on top of them, and they're still sticking pretty well. So, you may be able to even reuse those things.
So, you guys let me know what you think about it. Do you have any of these cars?
Would you even consider them? You know, I'm not a big NASCAR fan. Like, I think NASCAR's cool. Uh I've just never really got into sitting down and watching a full race. I like to watch the last 10, 20 laps, you know, or whatever, but uh I think NASCAR is very cool, and I love racing RCs. So, this was just perfect.
The size of them being 12 scale is small enough you can enjoy them in a smaller area like this.
And they're just a really good car out of the box. Now, I've seen some people have like a couple issues here and there with them out of the box, but both of these were perfect. I did nothing to these and we ran them for 4 It was about 4 hours out here this day just ripping around. And I can't wait to get more time with them. So, I just wanted to share it with you guys. I hope you enjoy it. I appreciate everybody that watches and hangs out with me. And as always, I appreciate the channel members.
Till next time, guys.
Peace.
