Brush fires burn in western Broward County

[00:00:00]Breaking right now at 4:30. We'll continue to follow a brush fire burning in West Broward. And we know at least 900 acres have burned so far. So, let's get right over to Local 10's Jeff Darian. He is live. He's in West Broward right near that scene. Uh, what are you seeing out there, Jeff?

[00:00:15]Yeah, hey there, guys. So, let's set the stage a little bit, tell you where we are. We're in the Everglades. We're on Highway 27, US 27 in West Broward, mile marker 44. Folks have been here fighting this fire, this brush fire since about 1:00 this afternoon. Update on the numbers now, Christie. It's about 1,500 acres. Let's send you straight up now to Sky 10. We've got video that we shot earlier. Now, this brush fire is a little bit of a concern because of where it actually is along the highway here on 27. The good thing is Florida Forest Service is telling me that the winds are actually moving a little bit to the west. So, that's good news because it's actually pushing the fire deeper into the Everglades and sort of away from US 27 here. So, that's the good news.

[00:01:01]They've got crews on the ground, obviously, fighting the fire and then also in the air. We've seen the helicopter go up a few times now. You've seen it before, probably. The helicopter swoops down and a body of water, grabs a bucket full of water and then goes over to one of the hot spots. I'm trying to see it. I'll move around a little bit.

[00:01:19]The helicopter's a little bit to my left. You can't see it. Let's come back down to me live now on the ground. I'll step out of the way. Jose, our photographer, let's give folks at home and on their phones, their mobile devices, etc. This is what it looks like from the ground. Again, US 27, West Broward, mile marker 44. That's where we are. See that black billowing smoke? So, the wind is going to the west. And again, that's good for these crews as they try and fight this. A little bit to the left, Jose. Let's show them this piece of equipment here live on Local 10. What that is is that's a piece of firefighting apparatus that has tracks on it. You see the tracks on it?

[00:01:58]That's able to go into the Everglades, deep into the Everglades. There's one inside right now fighting this brush fire. This is a second one that they have on standby, if you will. This thing is loaded with approximately 500 gallons of water. So, if they need that, they'll send a second one in to the Everglades.

[00:02:18]And in the meantime, they're just going to keep fighting this from the air and on the ground. Back here live, let me come back into the shot. So, in terms of containment, there's no real information yet, guys, on containment because they're still in the middle of fighting it. And you've got sort of a perfect storm here of things going on. You've got wind, you've got dry weather that we haven't had much rain for. So, those three things, no rain, wind, and dry conditions here on the ground is fueling this thing. So, they're trying to knock it down as quick as they can. I talked to the Forest Service spokesperson a couple minutes ago. I said, "How long you think you'll be here?"
