Theodor Herzl, the father of modern political Zionism, initially considered Patagonia in Argentina as a potential location for a Jewish state due to its vast empty land, low population, and open immigration policy for persecuted European Jews; however, Argentina refused to recognize a fully sovereign Jewish state, leading Herzl to ultimately choose Palestine instead, which became the foundation for modern Israel.

Did you know that Israel was almost going to be established in South America?
At the end of the 18th century, Theodor Herzl had two options for the creation of a Jewish state, Palestine or Patagonia in Argentina.
For a time, Patagonia seemed the most suitable with its vast empty land, very low population, and open immigration policy for Jews persecuted in Europe.
It was an ideal place and the Jewish Colonization Association even bought land there and established an early Jewish agricultural colony.
But there was one problem.
Argentina was never willing to recognize a fully sovereign Jewish state. No matter how much land they bought, it would ultimately remain part of Argentina.
For Herzl, this was the end of the whole plan.
On the other hand, Palestine, with its thousand-year religious history and growing international support, became a realistic option. And that decision is the reason for the existence of Israel in the Middle East today.
