I Don't Need The Whole World... As Long As I Have You | Sheikh Hamdan | Fazza Poems | Fazza
Added:I don't need the whole world as long as I have you.
I want to begin there because it is where everything else begins, simple and complete truth of it, sitting at the center of everything I am about to try to say.
Not as a romantic exaggeration.
Not as the the kind of sweeping declaration that sounds beautiful in a moment and hollow in the examination that follows.
But as the most accurate description currently available of how my interior life has reorganized itself around the specific and irreplaceable reality of you.
The world is large. I know that.
I have moved through enough of it to understand its size and its variety and the the genuine richness of what it contains. There are things in it worth wanting, worth pursuing, worth the particular effort of reaching toward.
I am not saying none of that is real.
I am saying that when I hold all of it in one hand and the simple fact of you in the other, the weighing is not difficult. It is not even close.
You are not one good thing among many good things.
Um you are the thing that makes the many good things feel like they are worth anything at all.
Before we go any further, there's something I want to say from the heart.
More than 90% of the people watching right now haven't subscribed yet.
And perhaps that wouldn't matter so much if these poems were just words, but they're not. They're pieces of stories, pieces of people, pieces of moments that changed us forever. So, if you found comfort, meaning, or even a little bit of yourself in these videos, please take a moment to subscribe.
It's completely free and helps this community continue growing. And while you're here, I want to know what feeling brought you to this video tonight.
Let me know in the comments below.
I want to be honest about what it took to arrive at this understanding because I do not think it came easily or all at once or without the particular resistance that a person puts up when something true arrives that is larger than what they had been expecting.
I was not someone who believed before you in the kind of sufficiency that one person can represent for another.
I had seen enough of what that claim looked like when it went wrong, the way need can dress itself as devotion, the way the insistence that one person is enough can sometimes be the signal that something is missing rather than the evidence that something's has been found.
I was careful about that. I kept a certain reasonable distance from any feeling that seemed to be organizing my entire interior world around a single point because single points of dependency seem to me like structural vulnerabilities rather than sources of strength.
And then you arrived and everything I had been careful about stopped being the issue.
Because what I feel for you is not need dressed as devotion. It is not the grasping of someone who has found in another person a substitute for everything they could not find in themselves.
It is something quieter and more solid than that. It is the genuine discovery that certain kinds of presence actually do change the quality of everything else, not by replacing everything else, but by giving everything else a context in which it means something.
Let me try to explain what I mean by that because I think it is the most important distinction I can make and I want to make it carefully.
When I say I do not need the whole world as long as I have you, I am not saying that you are a substitute for the world. I am not saying that you fill every absence and answer every need and make every other source of meaning unnecessary.
What I am saying is something more specific and I think more true. I am saying that the world in all its genuine size and variety and richness is experienced differently when you are the person I am moving through it with, not just alongside, not just in the pleasant company of, but with in the full and honest sense of um two people who have found a way of being in the world together that makes the world available in a way it is not available when you are moving through it alone.
The same light looks different. The same ordinary afternoon has a different texture. The same moment of um small beauty or passing difficulty or unremarkable Tuesday carries more, means more, registers more completely when you are the person I am experiencing it in the presence of.
You do not replace the world. You make the world legible in a way it was not quite legible before.
I want to tell you about the specific moments when I feel this most clearly.
The ordinary instances where um the understanding that I do not need anything beyond you arrives not as an abstract conclusion, but as a lived and immediate and completely undeniable experience.
It happens most often in the quiet moments, the ones that would register as unremarkable from the outside, the ones that contain nothing visibly significant, but that have a particular quality of fullness when you are in them.
The early hours when the day has not yet made its demands and there is just the silence and your presence within it, either physical or the kind of mental and emotional presence that a person can have even across distance when they have become sufficiently integrated into the texture of your daily experience.
In those moments, I feel no absence.
I feel no reaching towards something the moment does not contain. Uh I feel the particular completeness of someone who is exactly where they are supposed to be with exactly the person they are supposed to be with in a moment that does not need to be anything other than what it is because what it is with you in it is already enough.
Enough.
I want to stay with that word for a moment because I think it is one of the most underused and most important words available to us when we are trying to describe what genuine love actually feels like from the inside.
We talk about love in terms of wanting more, reaching further, the constant intensification of feeling that the the romantic tradition has trained us to expect as the primary evidence that something real is happening.
And there is truth in that.
The wanting more is real.
I want more of you, more time, more of the specific and layered reality of who you are, more of the ordinary moments that become extraordinary simply because you are in them.
That wanting more is something and I do not want to diminish it.
But underneath the wanting more is something that I think is even more fundamental and even more honest.
It is the feeling of enough.
The feeling that in this specific and present moment, with this specific and present person, something in me that is usually slightly restless, slightly oriented toward the next thing, slightly aware of some ambient incompleteness goes quiet, goes still, feels without any effort or argument sufficient. Feels like a person who has what they need.
And that feeling, that particular quality of interior's stillness and sufficiency, is something I did not fully understand before you made it available to me simply by being what you are.
I think about the version of of myself that existed before this understanding arrived.
Not with regret, not with the the particular melancholy of someone who feels they wasted the time before they found the thing that made everything make sense.
Because I do not think that is the right way to hold what came before.
Everything before was necessary.
Everything before was the particular set of experiences and realizations and honest failures and gradual openings that made me capable of recognizing what you are when you arrived.
A person who had not moved through what I moved through before you would not have been ready for you. Would not have had the the particular quality of attention sharpened by its own disappointments and clarified by its own honest examination of what had been missing that allowed me to see you clearly from the beginning rather than taking time to understand what I was looking at.
But, I do notice when I think about that before a particular quality of ambient incompleteness that I had grown so accustomed to that I had stopped identifying it as incompleteness at all.
I had started calling it independence.
I had started calling it self-sufficiency.
Um I had started treating the absence of the kind of sufficiency I now feel with you as a sign of my own maturity rather than as the simple evidence of something not yet found. You were the finding.
And the finding changed not just what I have, but what I understand about what I was always looking for.
I want to talk about the world for a moment, the actual world, the one I claimed not to need as long as I have you because I think the claim deserves some honest examination rather than simply being left as a declaration.
The world contains things I value genuinely, and I want to be truthful about that rather than performing an indifference I do not actually feel.
There are places in it that carry a particular beauty.
There are ideas in it that I find genuinely and deeply interesting, questions that I could spend a lifetime turning over without exhausting their depths.
There are other people in it who matter to me, whose presence in my life adds something real, and whose absence would register as genuine loss.
I am not someone for whom the world beyond you is simply backdrop, simply the undifferentiated space in which you exist. I am someone who is alive to what the world contains, and yet when I sit with all of that, when I hold all of it fully in mind, the places and the ideas and the people and the genuine richness of what is available in a life that is paying attention, and then I place you alongside it, what I discover is not a competition.
It is a context. You are the context in which everything else becomes most fully itself.
The beautiful place is more beautiful when it is somewhere I have thought about sharing with you.
The interesting idea is more interesting when you are the person I want to think it through with.
The other people who matter are more fully themselves in the version of my life where I am also fully myself, and I am most fully myself, most completely the version of me that I actually recognize as true when you are present in my life in the particular and integrated way that you are present in it now.
So, it is not that the world disappears when I have you.
It is that the world with you in it is a completely different world than the world without you.
And the world with you in it is the only version I am interested in living inside.
I wanted to say something about the future because I think the claim I am making has implications for the future that deserve to be acknowledged directly.
When I say I do not need the whole world as long as I have you, I am making a claim about not just this moment, but about the direction I intend to move in, the orientation I am choosing for the long accumulation of ordinary days that constitute an actual life. I am saying that you are what I am choosing to build toward, to build around, to make the the fixed point from which everything else in my life takes its bearings.
That is not a small claim. I want to be clear about its size.
It is the largest claim I know how to make about another person, larger than the declarations that get made in heightened moments and then quietly revised when the moment passes.
It is the claim of a person who has been honest with himself about what he values and has arrived through that honesty at a conclusion that does not waver when examined carefully from every angle.
The conclusion is you, the choice is you.
The future I want is the one that has you at the center of it, not as someone I am orbiting from a careful distance, but as someone I am genuinely and completely and without any remaining reservation present with.
I do not need the whole world.
I want to say it one more time because I want it to land as simply as it is true.
The world is large and it is real and it contains things of genuine value and I am someone who is alive to all of that.
But I have found in you something that the world in all its size and variety could not supply before you arrived and cannot substitute for now that you are here.
I have found the specific quality of being with another person that makes being a person feel like it is being done correctly, like the instrument has finally found its pitch.
Like the long searching that I was conducting without fully knowing I was conducting it has arrived quietly and without drama and with a the particular completeness of something that was always inevitable at exactly where it was always going.
At you.
Only and entirely and without any reservation or remainder at you.
Before you leave, I want to thank you for staying with me until the very end.
I know there are millions of videos you could have watched today, yet you spent these moments here.
