Denver neighborhood paints over Cesar Chavez mural

[00:00:00]Local artist Alina Rivera, known to her community as >> Lance is cool, >> says they're painting over the Cesar Chavez mural on the side of Ko's restaurant and plans to paint a new mural in the future.

[00:00:11]>> You know, we're not trying to erase history or, you know, the fact that he was like a trailblazer in the CHO movement.

[00:00:16]>> New sexual misconduct allegations against the civil rights leader came to light last month.

[00:00:21]>> But we are trying to highlight, you know, a lot of stories that go unheard, especially when it comes to women in the CHO movement. [applause] They shared those stories as the community bonded over brushes.

[00:00:32]>> They could be personal or they could be like within your family or in your community. But then, you know, we have to have those discussions again as I said, you know, about, you know, the trauma and the hurt that comes with certain leaders and figures. The murals on Morrison Road have long captured this community story. [applause] >> Now, these women say it's time their voices are part of that canvas. I feel like uh us collectively as women, three different artists, you know, it's such an honor.

[00:01:03]Now, as for what that new mural is going to look like, I was told by leaders tonight that they're going to come together with the community and that'll be decided and then that process will start on Cinco de Mayo.
